Can’t front Vuch is balling right now…he grabbed 23 boards!
He knows he is in the final year of his contract…hopefully, he plays
like this all season long. I’ve never seen him play this tough before.

Ayo, Ayo is turning into the second best player on the team. I love it. He runs the point
with a high IQ.

Let’s keep this energy and mind state and we will definitely be a 6th seed this year.

Russell Westbrook Is Shooting the Lakers in the Foot

With every brick and loss, the Lakers’ hole gets a little deeper. If Los Angeles can’t find a way to get rid of Westbrook, there’s no way to salvage this season.

By Kevin O'Connor Oct 24, 2022, 8:49am EDT

Russell Westbrook is a washed-up bricklayer who needs to be traded immediately for the Los Angeles Lakers to have any chance of saving their season.

It’s been only three games, but the Lakers are winless and their schedule doesn’t ease up over the next month. Westbrook isn’t the only problem, but he’s by far their biggest and most glaring one.

On Sunday, the Lakers blew an eight-point fourth-quarter lead against the Trail Blazers that started to slip away as soon as Westbrook checked into the game with 4:42 remaining. The Blazers had their center, Jusuf Nurkic, defend Russ and sag into the paint to clog driving lanes, suffocating the Lakers’ offense. Westbrook missed two wide-open jumpers. One was a 3-pointer with no defender making an effort to contest his shot. The other was an egregious pull-up 2-pointer with 18 seconds left on the shot clock and 30.2 seconds left in the game that caused every Lakers fan on the planet to sound like Darth Vader screaming NOOOO! in Revenge of the Sith.

Before Westbrook’s shot clanked off the back of the rim, Anthony Davis looked perplexed as he stood near half court waiting for the ball to be swung his way. LeBron James raised his arms in bewilderment. Even on the Blazers’ bench, second-year wing Greg Brown III can be seen leaping and celebrating as soon as Westbrook elevated for his shot.

ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry put into context just how bad the shot truly was:

https://twitter.com/kirkgoldsberry/status/1584350355042680832

"Russell Westbrook has made 3 of 17 jump shots this season.

Also, he is the only player that has attempted a jump shot with under 30 seconds to go and 15+ seconds left on the shot clock with their team up by 1 possession in the last 4 seasons."

The Blazers came back to steal Sunday’s game after Westbrook’s shot, with the Lakers guard finishing 4-for-15 from the field in the loss. His performance against the Clippers on Thursday was even worse; he shot 0-for-11 in 27 minutes.

Westbrook has made only 38.3 percent of his midrange jumpers in his career, and the number has dipped further since he joined the Lakers. He’s gone from bad to worse, and now defenders treat him like he isn’t even on the court. Through three games this season, opponents are contesting jump shots by Westbrook only 41.2 percent of the time. According to Second Spectrum, that’s by far the lowest contest rate in NBA tracking data history, which dates back to 2013-14.

“I don’t want any of my players to be hesitant taking shots. I don’t want to give them any type of complex. I want them confident in their ability to score from all over the floor,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham told reporters after Sunday’s game. “His percentages haven’t been high. But Russ can make a 3-point shot. So it’s a matter of stepping up. If you’re gonna take it, you have to step up and make it. That’s pretty much it.”

That’s not pretty much it, though. To put Westbrook’s 41.2 percent contest rate in perspective, only two other players on record have had less than 50 percent of their jumpers contested: Joakim Noah, at 48.7 percent in 2013-14 with the Bulls, and Andre Roberson, at 48.8 percent during the 2016-17 season with the Thunder. This season, Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon’s 60 percent contest rate is the league’s second lowest behind Westbrook’s.

Yes, Westbrook can make a 3-pointer, as Ham said. So can Ben Simmons. But at least he has the awareness not to chuck away.

Defenses are ignoring Russ more than they’ve ignored anyone over the past nine seasons. And to make matters worse, Westbrook isn’t getting to the basket like he has even in recent seasons:

Last Thursday, the Clippers lacked rim protection when center Ivica Zubac was stretched to the perimeter to defend jumpers by Davis. Late in the game, with Westbrook on the floor, Clippers head coach Ty Lue instead put Zubac on Westbrook. At one point, LeBron swung the ball to Russ, who attacked off the dribble but couldn’t even get by the 7-foot Zubac, who’s much bigger and slower. Westbrook might be bothered by a hamstring that he tweaked during the preseason, but right now he lacks burst and is finishing at a career-low percentage inside.

Ham suggested on Sunday the Lakers could run more dribble handoffs with Westbrook with players whizzing around him. The problem is that play is most effective with shooters and spacing: Westbrook has made only one of 12 shots from 3 this season, and the rest of the Lakers roster has made only 22.6 percent of their shots from downtown. Ham has also discussed having Westbrook set more on-ball screens. The Lakers’ coach doesn’t have many options on the bench, but at least Austin Reaves knows to swing the ball to the stars. At least Juan Toscano-Anderson is an attentive cutter. At least Kendrick Nunn can hit some shots. Not all of them are better than Westbrook in a vacuum, but they all are better at serving the needs of the Lakers.

Obviously, Ham isn’t going to put his most sensitive star on blast in front of the media (at least not in October). Neither would LeBron or AD. But someone, anyone, needs to privately tell Westbrook to just stop shooting jump shots off the dribble, especially early in the shot clock, and instead focus on what he’s best at: attacking the basket and playmaking. And give credit where it’s due: Westbrook fought hard on defense last Thursday against the Clippers, especially against Kawhi Leonard in the fourth quarter. But no matter how much he improves on offense, the Lakers would be better off flipping his expiring $47 million salary on the trade market in a package that includes one or both of their two future first-round picks in 2027 and 2029.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that a trade involving Westbrook isn’t likely until after Thanksgiving. That’s around the same time that Dennis Schröder, who at this point is undoubtedly a better point guard than Westbrook, could return from his thumb surgery.

When that time comes, Los Angeles will explore trade combinations with the Pacers that involve center Myles Turner and/or wing Buddy Hield. Those talks are currently on hold, but Turner and Hield would both add much-needed shooting, and Turner would provide rim-protection depth behind the oft-injured Davis.

Utah has been connected to the Lakers for months, too. League sources say that before the Jazz sent Bojan Bogdanovic to the Pistons, the Lakers offered Westbrook, a future first-round pick, and second-rounders for Bogdanovic and others. Sources expect the Lakers and Jazz to resume talks later in the season with some combination of other players discussed. (Utah has Jordan Clarkson, Mike Conley, and Rudy Gay—three veterans who can all shoot.)

There aren’t many other options for Westbrook. Marc Stein reported on his Substack months ago that the Hornets were interested in Westbrook. At the time, league sources told The Ringer that the Hornets wanted to dump long-term salary with the expectation that they’d be paying big money to re-sign Miles Bridges, but he remains unsigned due to his unresolved domestic violence case.

Other than those three teams, there aren’t many possibilities, even theoretical ones. Wizards All-Star Bradley Beal has a no-trade clause and loved playing with Westbrook. Would he want to reunite with his former teammate, or trade places? If the Lakers get aggressive and decide to put Davis on the trade block attached to Westbrook, maybe the Bulls would have interest in the package.

Westbrook is the obvious scapegoat. But there is plenty of blame to go around in Los Angeles. After all, it was Rob Pelinka who acquired Westbrook, and LeBron who pushed for the Lakers to acquire him two offseasons ago instead of better options like DeMar DeRozan or Hield. LeBron got what he wanted. And Pelinka signed off on it all and built this mess of a roster with a lack of shooters and reliable wing defenders. Team owner Jeanie Buss rewarded Pelinka with a four-year contract extension after he hired Ham. Lakers fans are right to rip Buss, Pelinka, and everyone else in the organization for their incompetency. The place was dumpster fire in the years prior to LeBron’s arrival, and since they won a title in 2020 they’ve dismantled the roster. No matter how Westbrook evolves, and no matter who or what he’s eventually traded for, it’s difficult to trust the Lakers’ leadership even if the owner’s last name is Buss.

The Lakers need to nail their next move, or else they could soon be feeling an even greater pressure. James is trade eligible as soon as next offseason, and he can become a free agent in 2024. By all accounts, LeBron is happy living in Los Angeles. But what if the team isn’t even built to make the playoffs? Would he actually stay, especially considering he’s still playing at such a high level?

LeBron’s sustained greatness and the return of Davis should inspire urgency for Pelinka and Buss. With a smart Westbrook trade, they won’t be title favorites, but they’d be more formidable in the loaded West.

And if Westbrook doesn’t make further changes, whether it’s with the Lakers or his next team, he’ll be out of the NBA. This is not a potential “Chris Paul restoration project in Oklahoma City” type of situation. It’s approaching “Stephon Marbury is going to China” unless Westbrook evolves, pronto. A future Hall of Famer is right now an outright detriment to the franchise’s hopes of making the playoffs. It’s time to do something about it.

He's a big reason why the Lakers' defense has actually been good so far this year (top 3 in the NBA).

But yeah, Nunn's been really awful too, lol.

I still just think sending Westbrook home at least provides the opportunity for a mentality shift. Like, the shooters on the Lakers simply *aren't as bad* at shooting as they've been so far this season. Something has to change to help them flip that switch.

AD has been back from 3 the last couple of years yet continues to hang out on the perimeter
. Bron is shooting like 25% that’s not all on Russ.

Like, you can cite the bad shooting numbers of anyone-- and there are a *lot* of dudes shooting under 30% from 3 right now-- and the team would *still* be better if *any* of those guys were taking more 3s than Russ, who's shooting 8.3% from 3 on 5 attempts per game. And he's making under 40% of his twos! He's dreadful!

He's shooting the third most attempts on the team at under 30%. Being, say, the *sixth* best defender on the Lakers simply can't cancel that out. And although he's occasionally engaged on ball defensively, he's one of the worst off-ball defenders in the NBA. Has zero interest in off-ball activity on either side of the floor.

I actually really like a lot of their talent, but they are sooooooo young, lol. And they play like it too.

Like, I bet the Spurs (who are VERY young) have an average experience level that's at least a year or two higher than the Rockets'. And while I don't think the Spurs will be "good" (and I have to think they'll make a trade if they start looking too good, lmao), the experience at this early stage of the season clearly matters.

- DeRozan can still get to his spots. He ain't done yet. Best player on the team.
- Folks (myself included) were waiting for the Patrick Williams development when the Ayo Dosunmu growth is changing the team.
- Speaking of Pat. I'm not ready to see him on the bench just yet, but the noise around it is getting loud.
- I'm most disappointed in LaVine. IF he's healthy, I have not been impressed.
- Or maybe it's Donovan. Cause with two potential offensive threats like DeRozan and LaVine, we should be harder to guard.
- Last year's Bulls team would have been done after the C's killed them in that 1Q last night. Glad they were able to bounce back.

Wasn't as good a scorer obviously, that's a given-- but the divide between Nique and Scottie on offense isn't nearly as wide as the divide between Nique and Scottie on defense.

Scottie was one of the great defenders of his era, and Nique famously didn't give a fuck about defense, lol.

and i think its being made worse by them playing him like a 3. hes not good handling the ball. and as athletic as he is...he never really drives past anyone. he never really pulls up for a j with space.

he just doesnt have much feel for the game.

hes more of natural 4 imo. decent in the dunkers spot. decent setting screens and rolling, cutting to the rim when his man is helping on a ball handler, etc.

i'm talking about the optics right today.

a lot of people are talking about it in light of the whole Ben Simmons/Ja Morant thing the other night.

then you get Draymond getting hacked outta mid air not getting a call, while Cameron Payne...CAMERON PAYNE lemme say that again, is getting the Jordan Rules.

i mean, the Suns shot 34 FTs to GS 17 last night. that's a pretty eye opening gap i can't lie.

then, you have the NBA refs putting out an officiating manifesto at the same time.

shit just feels weird.

Like, GOP-like.

Some of the things on that list almost contradict each other.
You can't run away from a ref after a call,
but if you stare at a ref, and they feel intimidated,
you could also get called for a tech.

This type of exertion of power from the refs is...interesting.

He's actually aggressive like the best player on a good team should be-- something he's never really been before. And the playmaking on drives/live-ball action is just... so much better than it should be for a guy who's 6'8+.

he needs to have the ball and he'd work with shooters around him. Ironically if his price was right for GS he'd be a perfect drop-in replacement in case of the grand washing

the more apt analogy is that he is the "Westbrook" to the Nets' "Lakers"

- aging HOF talent
- also HOF talent that can't stay on the court (or keep to his strengths)
- a square peg that was once All-Star talent but is playing like some unwashed ass

most of the rest of the dudes on the team is just that... "dudes"

Lakers (handshake emoji) Nets

Bulls players are playing with great effort, and I do see the players applying
themselves on defense. Lavine had a good scoring night, but he is still has ball
protection issues. He committed 5 TOs.

I just wish we had a dynamic scorer to come off the bench, a Lou Williams type of player
to come in and drop 20.

focuses on Russ but they got G league dudes coming off the bench, they were better of last year with the old man roster. This year it’s dudes out there playing key minutes you never heard of

Pelinka should be fired.

He, to me, is a bigger disappointment than any other Lakers failure of the last several years

Everyone saw the Russ experiment failing. Everyone knew Bron was older, that Pelinka’s GM chops were suspect, that the organization in general is run like a mom and pop roadside produce stand.

But no one saw Anthony Davis from the Pelicans becoming just a high end contributor. Call me naive but I thought he was being set up to carry the Lakers for a decade and ride off as an all timer and perennial MVP vote getter.

won the 'chip -- and since then he's been deflated, injured, and inconsistent. He's actually off to a very good start based on what he did the past two years, but he already looks run down. Not sure I can recall a big who's been as fragile physically as AD's been the past 2 years in his *20s*

There was a time not too long where AD was (rightfully) in the conversation with Giannis as the two most promising ascendant, MVP-caliber bigs.

Right now? It's blasphemous to even mention AD in the same sentence w/ Giannis. The fall from grace has been crazy.

its weird AD is the most unathletic athletic guy I've ever seen. He's constantly falling awkwardly its almost like his equilibrium off or something. Its crazy because he didn't seem to be that clumsy early in his career and at Kentucky.

that Pelinka’s GM chops were suspect, that the

There were like 2-3 straight summers where folks were calling Rob a genius...and his moves flamed the fuck out.

Maybe at first people were suspect, but two straight summers after the chip he was (weirdly) getting praise upon praise for his suspect moves.

In the media and here.

Slight disagree here too. AD has been Mr Glass- this ain't knew. There was always at least a slight risk in tying the future to him.

I do agree with the overall point of AD and this current era being a huge disappointment though.

Its just terrible all around.

In response to Reply # 0
Thu Oct-27-22 10:56 AM by Vex_id

Keep Russ and his expiring contract (and try to land a big fish this summer in free agency with that money) and just go through a hard, long rebuild with your young assets. The fact that Pelinka and the FO have been unable (for whatever reason) to make the requisite change to cut their losses, trade Russ, and get shooters has been executive malpractice in the front office. It means you're not even trying to compete with this team - and it makes zero sense to have Bron (or AD for that matter) if you're not in win-now mode.

Had the Lakers made a trade to Spurs/Pacers/Hornets/Jazz over the summer (all deals which could've happened if Lakers would've conceded draft picks) - then you go into camp/new season with fresh optimism and *SHOOTERS*, and addition by subtraction with Russ not there to disrupt chemistry.

Instead? Lakers just have put together the worst 3-point shooting 4-game stretch in LEAGUE HISTORY. Confidence is completely shot, and players look straight resentful out there.

Are Rob & Jeanie even trying to win? At least you got the 'chip in 2020 to put a stop to one of the worst playoff droughts in league history. You can move on at least having that success, but this ship is beyond broken.

...is that the Lakers thought they'd middle their way to a 500 record up to the trade deadline and then make a move for a 2nd half of the season sprint. But instead instead they've turned in an unfathomably bad four game stretch that reveals the shooting is even worse than anticipated and that, in just four games, they're even more desperate than they were in the Summer. They're gonna be a bottom 3 team in the West at this clip.

They may as well do something drastic because at this rate they're gonna be in the lottery and not even have their pick at Wemby or Scoot anyway

I've absolutely come around to this concept. Now - they WONT do it. Having stars is what the Lakers are built on. Shit, see the last....3-4 years of Kobe's career.

But I have to think AD gets a good return. Lebron less so, but still something - for sure. But it's time for a full on rebuild. This treading water shit isn't it (and shit even then - they ARENT treading water. They flat out suck.)

It's going to hurt so bad when Adam Silver or whoever turns that card over for the #1 pick and it's a Laker logo.

And really, the problem with trading Bron and AD is… do we have any confidence that Pelinka would trade for pieces that would build a cohesive roster that could win? Even if they got picks… are we certain they make good picks?

1. To address your header, they’re saying we use Bron and AD to get young assets, not that we have them already.

2. Nobody in here has any confidence in anyone in this regime. Ham’s about all anyone had any confidence in.

3. It just depends on what teams are offering. I have little faith we get a huge haul for any of them.

4. it’s FAR better to get whatever we can for them, while we can, than to give up what little we have just to be a play-in team with absolutely NOTHING left to rebuild with

And that’s a stretch.

>Had the Lakers made a trade to Spurs/Pacers/Hornets/Jazz over
>the summer (all deals which could've happened if Lakers
>would've conceded draft picks) - then you go into camp/new
>season with fresh optimism and *SHOOTERS*, and addition by

The only reason to do any of that is to appease Lebron.

Because we aren’t winning, let alone seriously competing, for title with any of that.

So the only *real* reason to punt on the future that far out is to make sure Lebron doesn’t go out on a complete loser. There’s no significant benefit to the actual team to do those deals.

I can’t imagine anyone advising any team that isn’t the Lakers to make a move that strips them barevof assets, all in the pursuit of mediocrity.

And no, “it’s LA, they HAVE to field a playoff team” isn’t a good reason.

It’s not just about what we get, it’s about the price, which is everything.

Unless we get a Pau-style gift from the Basketball Gods, The best thing we can do is trade AD NOW and run out the clock with Bron, trading him and our then-three available picks on draft day.

True. But Klay has too much equity as a franchise cornerstone to unceremoniously relegate him to the bench. It will need to be handled very delicately.

He almost cost them the Finals with his shot jacking. I figured he'd come back after the summer much improved but it looks like this is who he is now. He hurts the team way more than he helps. Coming off the bench might actually allow him to put a serviceable bow on the end of his career. Fresher legs. Pick up a sixth man of the year award. Right now he's just ruining his legacy.

even tho hes noticeably slower.

which is why the ball sticks with him and disrupts the offense more now. dude tryna breakdown his defender and get space on a j is painful to watch cuz you know how it ends.

his best shots are when steph or somebody is intentionally feeding him for the spot up j. thats what he needs to stick to.

i have my criticisms about poole (especially on d)...but when he started for klay last year that offense was humming. hes a more efficient shooter who can get to the cup and also make plays to open teammates. also has more range than klay and better for spacing and stretching the d.

wiggins plays better with that poole lineup too.

KD, if he wanted to be, would be their best defender.

but it's difficult especially that he's not a baby anymore, for him to put out a bunch of effort on defense when he NEEDS to score 30 plus every night to have a CHANCE to win.

KD can be a great help defender on a team that plays great defense otherwise with his current age and injury history its unreasonable to expect him to be much more than that.

They’re 17th out of 30 right today in offense. Like, the 29th out of 30 on defense is expected (especially considering how awful Simmons’s defensive efficiency is right now since he’s clearly not yet himself)… but you have to expect KD/Kyrie to turn an offense top 10 to stem the tide. And it’s just… not happened to date.

Nets are 1-5; Lakers are 0-5. Both teams are entering desperate territory if they want to right the ship and salvage the season. Crazy to say that after 5/6 games, but it feels like it's that urgent/real for both teams.

Especially after this latest Kyrie chapter -- that post-game interview after the Pacers loss with something else. Tsai & Kyrie taking up their disagreement on Twitter (instead of man-to-man) seems like a real ominous look for the where the Ky/Nets relationship is headed. And KD wants out. Just because he didn't get an exit ramp over the summer doesn't mean he still wants to be there. If this team doesn't start winning games, I wouldn't be shocked to see something significant happen in terms of blockbuster trades -- sooner than we think.

any backlash they receive is just confirmation that theyre telling the truth (in their eyes). because if you are making people mad then you must be right.

kd wont say it publicly but i know hes tired of this shit. he tried to get out when the nets re-signed kyrie...and that gave him the perfect cover because he could say it was because of the nets not maxing out kyrie.

but kyrie said in a press conference that he was suprised/confused by kd wanting to leave *after* he re-signed. so you know what that was really about.

He didn’t say anything negative about anyone or degrade anyone. He posted
a link to a movie/book that’s sold on Amazon, a public platform that’s available to
the public. He can’t get suspended for that….no way, no how.
He didn’t do anything illegal. He didn’t say he hated anyone, or any culture,
or any religion.

I don’t have the same beliefs as Kyrie, but he isn’t antisemitic. As he stated, dialogue
about what’s antisemitic and what isn’t antisemitic, as well as who the original people
of the creator are, are a big no-no for some reason.

He spoke on his intent and he spoke on his purpose, and he was transparent and
sincere in his statements.

I’m a man of science and math, and I know Kyrie has beliefs that go against that, but
in this instance he is not guilty of any wrong doings.

It’s not about supporting anyone. It’s about someone being wrongfully labeled, and about
someone being bullied and canceled.

What Kyrie did is totally different then anything Kanye is doing and has done. I don’t
condone Kanye’s actions, but I do believe there is a mental component behind his
behavior that can’t be ignored.

Kyrie stated nothing about any culture or ethnicity and said absolutely nothing
about Jews. He posted a link to a book/movie that’s available to the public.

He broke not one single law, and he didn’t breach the NBA’s code of conduct policy.

All dude had to say was “sorry, that wasn’t my intention.” The word “sorry” goes a hundred miles with people, and he is allergic to it.

And for him to suggest that people *shouldn’t* react when he retweets Alex Jones or a movie that people find anti-Semitic is completely disingenuous. The social media impact for a public figure with millions of followers is different than that of a normal person, and he absolutely knows that.

A man is not responsible for the feelings and interpretations of another man
or woman, so he doesn’t need to apologize.

Kyrie verbally and physically targeted no one, so there is no need for him to apologize
just to apologize or to satisfy someone’s perception. So an apology goes a long way is bullcrap when the man LITERALLY did nothing wrong.

It doesn’t matter if he makes a billion or no money at all, he is not responsible for the interpretation or observation of any man. If you perceived it as something else or
opposite to what he did, that’s your problem as a man and human being and no man
owes you anything.

The man literally stated that his intentions and purpose weren’t to disrespect or
disregard any culture or religion, but to provide a platform for open discussion regarding
what is and isn’t antisemitism and who the original people of the creator are…..
and that was more than enough, and if anyone took anything opposite of that, then
that’s their problem.

That man did absolutely nothing wrong and he owes no one an apology, and nor
should he be compared to Kanye.

Sorry you’re to silly and immature to fathom that, as well as not added anything of
meaning to the subject. The parties I was talking to were in disagreement with me,
but it was a respectful debate of opinions. Sorry you’re not intelligent enough to
know how to disagree agreeably.

according to him...he is both a big influence on the community...and also just an everyday human being whose influence people greatly exaggerate lol.

he also said he just searched amazon for stuff on yahweh...and saw that item and posted it. then later he was asked if he actually read/watched what he posted and he said yeah lol.

And to a certain degree, he was. But the last 4-5 years he has been given chance after chance to express his thoughts and then clarify them, and he bungles it every single time. Then uses that as further evidence that he’s misunderstood.

Always a bad sign when you’re asking “Did I do anything illegal?” when no one was accusing you of doing anything illegal.

this isnt personnel related. they had the same folks last year and managed the 2nd best def rating in the league.

i dont know if it has to do with mike brown leaving...but the defensive philosophy just doesnt look like its there. dudes are out of position on rebounds, dudes cant stop anyone off the dribble, the rotations suck, dudes be fouling for no damn reason, etc.

even wiggins, looney, and moody look like they forgot how to guard people.

they just look like a team who doesnt spend any time practicing defense.

160. "The numbers for GSW with Poole and/or bench players in... are wild."
In response to Reply # 157

Here are, 6 games in (so not including today's game), the top 5 most commonly used lineups for the Warriors, and their net ratings, respectively:

Their most frequently used lineup, by a lot, is Curry/Klay/Dray/Wiggins/Looney. More than twice their second-most used lineup. And their net rating is +25.3. For reference, out of all lineups that have played more than 65 minutes together so far this season, that's *easily* the best lineup in the NBA.

... here are the next four lineups, though:

Steph/Klay/Dray/Wiggins/Poole. Net rating: -8.3.
Steph/Dray/Wiggins/Poole/Looney. Net rating: -16.
Green/Wiggins/Looney/Poole/Moody. Net rating: -25.3.
Green/DiVincenzo/Poole/Wiseman/Kuminga. Net rating: a whopping -57.8 (second worst in the NBA out of lineups that've played more than 10 minutes together).

I've been posting about my skepticism on Poole's defensive fit with this roster since they started discussing extension with him, and while it's been a short season so far... yeah, of the main six players they use, it's very obvious which piece hurts the team's efficiency the most.

We can also look at their individual net ratings so far in this short season (again, only factoring the games before tonight):

Curry: +31.6
Klay: +14
Dray: +19.1
Wiggins: +28
Looney: +39.6
Poole: -28.8

I mean, lol.

And, as you noted before, the bench impact is terrible so far. They have to keep playing them, because, with an older team, they absolutely need these guys to come along for playoff time... but the net ratings for them so far:

JaMychal Green: -12.8
Moses Moody: -2.9
James Wiseman: -39.5
Jonathan Kuminga: -50.8 (!!)
Donte DiVincenzo: -22.5

They just have to get positive output from Poole and the bench to win.

(The numbers will change after tonight, especially for the starting crew, since Wiggins in particular had an *awful* +/- against the Pistons-- and all of this can be caveated as small sample size-- but I think the points of "the bench needs to be good" and "Poole needs to be white-hot on offense to offset his defensive impact" will hold true in general.)

he doesnt even look like a developing young player anymore. he looks like he doesnt belong in the league. his feel for the game is regressing. dude will pass up the easier shot for a much more difficult one damn near every time.

and damn...i didnt realize poole was that bad. i think hes a better option than klay on offense. he can get hot like klay used to and hes a good playmaker off the dribble (when he isnt overdribbling). but shit...the stats say damn near the entire defense collapses around him lol.

and wiseman...hes coming along...but damn he misses *a lot* of dunks. dump offs, alleys, whatever. its like dude gets up to the rim and just closes his eyes sometimes. and hes not a good rim defender at all. i thought his size and athleticism would make him one by default but his awareness and positioning on that end is subpar. and hes pretty much guaranteed to foul you if you just jump and make him leave his feet too.

wtf man? the warriors depth was supposed to be their strength. half the team playing like a bunch of 10 days tho.

In response to Reply # 157

that's caught my eye the MOST.

i mean, defense is effort more than anything, and i think w/ the ring and the payday, some of these guys are taking it light on defense.

i hope that's the case for their sake.

with that said, that doesn't really speak to your other point though about just their general defensive organization, which has also been poor.

you said the roster is the same, but it's not really. you got dudes who knew their roles and did them well. this year, you got a bunch of dudes trying to figure out what their roles are so far, and they aren't doing them well.

if you ask me, losing GP2 and Otto Porter is killing them. i mean, it was pretty much unavoidable on Golden State's part, i'm just saying.

definitely gonna be a wrap for the dubs reign if this continues.

In high school, he was wildly inconsistent play to play. He'd do mindblowing things one possession, then take a few possessions completely off. But he's so big, and the HS game has such little spacing, that his incredibly low motor didn't really matter.

Then, when he was at Oregon, while he got good counting stats, his team was really bad, because he didn't play defense except for block hunting and he never passed the ball. A true ball-stopper on one end and an "I don't give a shit about rotating" on the other end. He can shoot 3s, but if he hurts both the offense and the defense except when the 3s fall, what good does he do your team?

Then, when he was on Denver, he was genuinely bad. He'd make an exciting play here or three, but the Nuggets were provably worse when he was on the floor.

Now, he's in Orlando, and, admittedly, he's playing well early on (perhaps because he developed the correct fear that he might be Out The League if he didn't play well on this squad). I remain skeptical that he'll maintain this, but they've really simplified his role too. Maybe if he doesn't do much other than classic scrappy big man play (take up space, block shots, catch lobs, and the very sparing pick-and-pop attempt), and he maintains a level of motor to his performance all season long, he can find a way to stick.

continue to play him as a 5 which is getting him killed.

The problem with AD is he is a guard in a big man’s body. He played
guard in HS and surprisingly had an insane growth spurt. He didn’t
properly grow into his body.

Next to Cousins he played as a 4 and put up insane numbers.

It's a nice pairing with Cade-- Cade being the slow-down, process-the-game-better-than-anyone-in-half-court guard, and Jaden being the lightning-fast, outrun-everyone guard. It's nice having guys who can play either style situationally.

And I was afraid Jaden would be going *too* fast as a rookie, make lots of turnovers, not really figure out the tempo of the game quite yet... but he's honestly done fairly well in what I've seen. Having Cade alongside probably helps with that adjustment too.
