-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

in a game that actually "counts."

Wanna see how Wiseman, White Donte, etc fit in and how theu are using Kuminga, Moody.

Also looking to see if Klay is "all the way back." He looked better in the brief preseason action I watched.

Obviously gonna be looking out of my side eye to see how Dray and JP are, or are not, interacting.

Start the season!

Bulls list Zach LaVine questionable for opener vs. Heat
because of left knee injury management. Alex Caruso is
probable with a left calf contusion. Lonzo Ball obviously is out.

Of course, a healthy AD makes that obvious, but it just looks like all these players are buying into Ham's defensive plan.

Offense is some shit. My GOODNESS this team cannot shoot for shit.

I have to think this gets better - but just seeing AD on a mission is great.

In a vacuum, PJ is just what Philly has needed for a while. But he’s also, like, quite old.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s due for a really bad year, analytics included.

It seemed like every preview I listened to/read talked about him like it was forever 2018 and more than any other obvious veteran need fulfilled I couldn't help but develop a gasface. I'd love to be wrong, but...homeless man's Barkley makes more sense sucking ass this year than even being a +/- goose egg with some morale-based intangibles.

Curry was Curry. Klay and Wiggins looked good. Wiseman wasn't perfect, but there was a lot to like about his game time. He showed the potential that I'm hoping he fully realizes as the season goes on. I've said it on here before, but the Warriors haven't had an athletic big-man on both sides of the ball since... Robert Parrish? And he wasn't that good when he was on the Warriors, so it's really Wilt. We add something like that on a consistent basis, then watch out.

And I usually don't like to talk about opponents, but the Lakers looked bombed out and depleted, especially offensively. It's early, but Beverly looked like some shit. Which makes me smile, because I dislike him more than anyone else on the Lakers. Even Westbrook. Also, as my homeboy said, it doesn't look like Westbrook, James, and Davis pratice together. And after them, that roster is thin AF.

if klay is shooting comfortably like he has this game and the last preseason game...and wiggs is shooting over the top of the defense consistently...another title run coming up. i dont see how teams are gonna be able to deal with that spacing. and they cant double curry like that anymore.

jamychal green is looking like an upgrade over otto porter from 3 and also on the boards.

donte is an upgrade over gp offensively with adequate d.

this team wont be short on firepower.

and they had to shoot relatively well in the 2nd half from the arc just to get to that figure after going like 2-20 in the first half.

Bron & AD actually looked quite fluid. Bron has an off-shooting night and still shoots ~50% high volume scoring with 31, 14 & 8. I was actually surprised how agile how he was moving. He blew by some young legs with his first-step tonight. Unfathomable in year 20.

But Lakers will not make any kind of run shooting the ball like this as a team, especially if they don't defend at a high level.

its a tragedy we dont get to see him in any suspenseful playoff runs anymore.

44. "He's a longevity anomaly "
In response to Reply # 33
Wed Oct-19-22 01:15 PM by Vex_id

When you think of where the game's most elite scorers were at in this stage of their career, they were running on fumes. Malone was barely still contributing when he was chasing the scoring title. Kareem set the previous standard for longevity greatness, but is quickly being eclipsed by just how dominant LeBron still is *this* late in his career. Kareem was comfortably relegated to more of a role player late in his career.

LeBron? He's still carrying the load as the best/most consistent player on his team in year 20. Still playing at an MVP-level (he was the favorite to win MVP just a season ago until he went down with an injury) - and still is playing at an objectively elite level.

He's not just going to top Kareem's record, he's going to obliterate it, and will be looking fly while doing it.

>its a tragedy we dont get to see him in any suspenseful
>playoff runs anymore.

If Lakers can't compete this year (meaning a deep playoff run) - and they don't make the requisite moves that have to be made in order to give this team more of a competitive advantage, then Lakers and Bron should just part ways. There's absolutely no sense in having LeBron at this stage of his career if you're not doing everything you can to put a championship team around him and capitalize on the remaining time he has playing at this level.

You can't hedge. Either utilize the draft picks as leverage to land the best possible pieces to put around LeBron & AD - or blow the ship up. If Lakers want a hard rebuild - fine - but if you still have LeBron & AD you've got to be in a win-now mentality. It doesn't appear the FO is committed (or competent enough) to navigate this.

in the off-season to maneuver before the trade deadline and get teams what they want/need in a potential Russ deal - but who knows if there was rhyme or reason to the acquisitions. But I do think they've got some attractive young/cheap assets to package to the right suitor (a team that will give up on this season *fast*, cut their losses, and initiate hard reset build to where nabbing that expiring Russ deal becomes attractive).

I agree that their shooting problems are fixable. We also haven't seen Dennis yet (who is out a month but has been a high % 3-point shooter), Troy Brown, or Bryant (all who can shoot the 3) yet due to injury -- and if you can deal for Hield & Turner, now you're assembling a team that can thrive off of the tried & true method of surrounding Bron with shooters and letting him create with AD off the pick and roll with ample spacing.

If there's one thing Russ will give you - it's effort. AD has been far too casual on the glass the past 2 years. I like the early signs from him in pre-season and game 1 - but he's still got a ways to go in terms of effort/assertiveness to be the 2020 AD that this team saw during the title run.

You could just tell the Lakers knew they had no chance from the opening tip, and you could tell the Warriors were like "whenever we're ready to cut their throats..."

that being said, though still a bad team, Lakers did look better on defense overall.

They might limp into the play in, but i dunno. They got Bron and AD and pretty much nobody else, and both of them might get hurt at some point.

That’s unacceptable. He isn’t even trying to look for his shot. No way can
you be a NBA player and play like that.

No post ups. No back doors. There is no initiative from is end.

Either he is trolling, or he is beyond mentally defeated and has zero confidence in
his shooting.

The way the 1Q was going, I thought the Bulls from the 2nd half of last season were back.

But that 2Q, the bench actually played really well. Especially Dragic.
Then DeRozan dropped 17 in the 3Q. He was killing 'em. Like he never left.
Heat were leaving Coby wide open in the 1st half, but dude woke up in the 2nd.
Another double double from Vucevic (although his shooting was trash).
I am willing to give Pat Williams to the all star break.
If he keeps playing like this, you gotta start Javonte Green.

How the Bulls/LaVine handled this knee injury is...disappointing.
All offseason and preseason both sides have been saying how good Zach feels.
Then the day OF the season opener he's out?
Something about that ain't right.
If he was just hurt, then just say that.

In response to Reply # 56

Good way to start the season. NBA seasons are so long, I don't know how much I want to get invested early in the season. Last year I was trying to watch all the games at the beginning then got burned out as they started failing. Might try to check in only until around February then start watching games.

Good to see Ayo is still progressing well.

Last I heard was that they went hard at practice for a days with Zach and they didn't like how his knee reacted thus the rest. This was a while after they announced they were resting him the first two games. Still odd but maybe they caught something before it gets worse.

In response to Reply # 0

Too bad that the Cavs dropped their opener to the Raptors, a team accurately described as a "team full of 6'9" (Matthew Dellavedovas) with a superstar whistle".

Cavs shot 50% from the field, 44% from 3, 81% from the line vs. 30something from the field, 30something from 3, 70something from the line.

The difference was situation, and in the case of FTs, Toronto had more than 2x the attempts.

Garland was eyepoked by Trent and will likely miss games.

Cavs don't have their rotations right, and the unexpected loss of Garland meant minutes for players that likely wouldn't have seen the court if not for Victory Cigar Time.

That being said. Donovan Mitchell was worth the trade. He routinely calmed the Cavs down like a veteran when the bullshit got to be too much. His passing is underrated. What he does, is a cut above anyone else the Cavs had on the floor tbh.

Caris LeVert is actually contributing just so as long as you don't ask him to be the primary ballhandler.

Dean Wade had a lot of quality minutes, as did Cedi (he plays well next to Don).

Sinclair Dino Lube fans out there shouting "F The Refs" when them MFs got 2x as many calls. SMH...

If the whole team is back on their next meeting, they getting SMOKED.

On the other side of the world:

LMMFAO @ Collin Sexton literally "hooving it" in ISO vs. Jokic and taking him to the hoop. Did that so much Jokic knocked him on his ass. Still got 20 in 21 minutes, 5 REB, 2AST 50% FG. He looks great after coming back.

Lauri Markkanen also showed out in his Jazz debut.

Ah, man. I'm gonna miss those guys.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Yes, lets trade those future picks for a guy who gets injured more than AD

Hownit happened is irrelevant

The fact is, he’s always injured

Anyone who wants that deal to happen, doesn’t give a shit about the Lakers

It’s a terrible idea that WILL bite us in the ass if it happens

Guaranteed

Beat case scenario, Buddy actually makes good on his draft number as a late bloomer and becomes a 22 ppg 3 point assassin

We still aren’t winning a title

The best plan is to WAIT until mid season.

Myles ain’t it. This isn’t 2K, where you can magically turn off injuries.
The tantalizing potential doesn’t magically make those persistent injuries stop happening.

If they have to pull that trigger now, go to san antonio and get those role players.

Obviously on a pretty bonkers shot from Lee but all the same, watching most of that game Phoenix really had no business winning, the Mavs should’ve had a psychological edge especially after Wood’s epic heater. I didn’t like how easy it seemed for Phoenix to overcome how best they looked most of the game, 64 win team or no.

Plus as much as I love Luka I feel like that deflated 35 foot prayer at the buzzer is his signature play in the NBA and has been for nearly 2 years now since he found the range.

I’m willing to accept it doesn’t happen as often as I think it does in these types of games, but I wasn’t surprised at all when Luka took that settle shot. I’ve seen the games where he channels Curry and it’s scary but my perception is that he really shouldn’t be doing that hero ball shooting when the shot’s not falling (2-10 from 3) because the Mavs aren’t dusting that junk off the way the Dubs can for Steph.

Besides, this was an opportunity for the Mavs to snap PHX’s neck after last year’s playoffs, even more so because a hobbled CP3 was what led to that comeback anyway. I’m a big enough Luka fan I don’t want this season to mark the official start of the “what sort of leader is Doncic, really?” narrative but opening weekend is all about overreacting and in that realm this feels fairly mid. The Mavs comprehensively picked up where they left off with the Suns, only for the scenario that sparked that whole run (a dramatically ineffective Point God) be the catalyst for a very weird loss.

I like their schedule this week, interestingly specific yet diverse challenges each game. Let’s see what happens!

Like, if Christian Wood, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Dorian Finney-Smith are your best supporting help? It would take an MVP lock Luka season to get home court in the playoffs-- and it'd take an MVP consideration Luka season just to dodge the play-in. A lot of one-way players and/or Just a Guys.

His roster certainly isn't as bad as the Nuggets without Murray/MPJ last season for Jokic, so I don't think he'll get the same sort of awards love if he drags them to a 48 win season (woe betide the league if the Nuggets win the West and they *have* to give it to Jokic for a third straight season, lmao)... but man, I just have no clue for the last couple seasons now what Cuban's been doing.

Like, outside of having Luka fall into their lap, have the Mavs made any decisions in the last few seasons that screamed "winning organization"?

Even from way back in the Dirk years. The best player they had was a past-his-prime J-Kidd. They never drafted a player who developed into a legit #2 and their free-agency signings were mostly miss.

It's good that Dirk and Luka are as great as they are and Cuban knows how to talk to the press because otherwise, he'd be on the hot seat as an owner.

Those teams played excellent team defense. And in the end, they won one and got to another Finals and won a bunch of games regardless. So, it would be hard to argue against their blueprint.

But also, how many top-30 players besides Dirk were on those teams? I forgot about Nash and Finley playing with Dirk, but besides them, those teams seemed below-average talent-wise relative to other great teams of that era.

Yes, they won at a high level, but if they had another top-25 player, maybe Dirk would have won another title.

Mavs went up by like 13 points, then Wood was subbed out, and boom, Dallas lost the

Jason Kidd lost that game.

Outside of '21, when they brought in Gasol, Schroder, and Harrell (which at least seemed good on paper) the rosters he created were headscratchers.

Not only were the rosters underperforming, their talents clearly clashed with the needs of Vogel. And he relented to pressure to bring in Russ which depleted the roster's depth that made it successful the two previous years (when healthy).

The last thing he deserved was an extension.

This is why Miami let him walk. Sometimes he’ll scorch the other teams’ second unit. Other times, he’ll take 7 shots in 11 minutes and miss them all, putting up a +\- of -18 in 11 minutes (!). Consistency’s never been his game.

Baseball fans (and play by play men) just spent a summer managing to never wrap their minds around Taylor Ward and Tyler Wade being on the same team as Jared Walsh and Brandon Marsh. Even splitting them up couldn’t quell the slip ups.

Sidebar involving TWO unrelated sports: I don’t know how the NFL Hunter Renfroe spells his name, I know it’s different, but I can’t believe it’s an era with two of ‘em

Based on what they're seeing from Kuminga during game time and seeing/hearing about him in practice, he's in a uniquely tough spot. They talked about how not just his experience at every other level of basketball but his one-on-one coaching sees him as The Guy, in other words the Warriors's post-Curry future is pretty heavily staked on Kuminga right now.

But on THIS team, his role isn't even bench spark plug like say '98 Kobe (not their example, I just couldn't remember if they had one) because of the Thompson/Poole/Wiggins cerberus. It's sort of like how some college stars get forced to sacrifice some of their skill set to fit a system/playbook (my own take) or a young guy winning a title and pretending that's part of his identity while secretly envying the freedom to hoop and establish their own narrative peers like Josh Giddey, Jalen Green or even Scottie Barnes are getting.

Chiney explained how hard it must be to be training for one thing while practicing for something entirely different, and him being so young I think I agree it's just wild to presume too much about what Kuminga will be five years from now. But the ceiling still seems pretty high to me, while the floor isn't remarkably low.

As the legacy stars are nearly all almost-old-to-old, if you're going to defend your title, you need quality bench minutes, not just for the regular season, but for the playoffs. You have to continue to let Wiseman/Moody/Kuminga develop, and you have to continue to let new players in your system like DiVincenzo and Green get comfortable. Short term loss, long term gain.

Like, worse than Luka. Has been his whole career.

Maybe that'll change under a new coach here, but I think Wood is ideally suited to being an off-the-bench offensive weapon that scorches second units.

(That said, if he can somehow keep scoring more than a point per minute of play, then, yeah, I imagine Kidd will have to play him more, lmao.)

Part of that is just positional, obviously-- if you're a big man who can't defend the perimeter and can't defend pick-and-roll, then you have to defend 5s in drop coverage... and since Wood is a below average rim protector, there's really just no scheme that can hide his defense. It's easier during the regular season to hide a bad perimeter defender than a bad big man defender.

It's probably fair to say Luka's worse as a perimeter defender than Wood is as a big man defender... but, like, there's just *nothing* you can do to hide a guy like Wood on defense, even against bad teams.

Not unlike Luka, maybe Wood can become such an overwhelming net positive on offense for the season that the defense just doesn't matter... but Wood has always struck me as a guy who is what he is. Nice sixth man, a guy who can light up second units, but a guy who can't play down the stretch against good teams otherwise he'll get targeted in mismatches. (Especially on a team like Dallas, where Luka will also be targeted and Dinwiddie if he's in could also be targeted. Can't have *three* guys out there who teams would be salivating to put on an island.)

All that having been said... again, he's scoring over a point per minute in these first two games, lol. He's at least providing offensive help. Just remains to be seen how the Mavs can win enough games to fight for homecourt in the West with so many one-way players and Just a Guys.

Dallas up by double digits, Kidd subs him out during the final minutes,
and not only did they blow a double digit lead…They lost!

I’ll take a high offensive guy with bad defense over
a Low offensive guy with good defense any day of the week.
It’s not like Kleber is a shut down defender.

Wood was eating Ayton alive.

Wood is a player who can drop anywhere from 25 to 5o points with
3 point range, and is too skilled to come off the bench.

The job is to score points and stretch the defense, closing with weak offensive players
means Luka will be your only star scorer in the closing minutes.

Closing with Finney and Kleber ain’t winning a chip. We will see just for how long
Kidd goes with those bullshit as closing lineups.

Kidd was doing that same crap with Giannis, putting stupid lineups out
there in the closing minutes and blowing leads.

Donovan Mitchell may be better than I thought he was. He almost had a triple double w/o Garland (who was live tweeting the game LOL) on the floor.

Kevin Love and Cedi are looking like they did with Rubio on the floor last season. Cedi especially with Mitchell is a killer pairing.

Jarrett Allen is still "F-U" on defense.

In this offense, Robin Lopez is pretty good since he can hook his way over opponents.

Caris LeVert had like 7 assists. Still not good finding his own shot, but he's been great on catch and shoot and moving the ball.

Dean Wade and Isaiah Mobley played very late. Wade doubled Okoro's counting stats in 1/6 of the time on the floor. Brobley had a late 3.

This team is gonna be a problem when everyone finds their roles and plays together.

To think that the Cavs have ANOTHER guard in their backcourt like this.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

At that point, you can't play it safe for fear of fouling out -- you've got to make the defensive play. Thought there were two blocks down the stretch he should've had. But he played great defense tonight, Lakers just can't close the show once again. Eerily reminiscent of last season.

Lakers likely have set a record in these first 3 games for worst 3-point shooting stretch.

Despite how woefully they are shooting the ball, this still was their game to lose. Not sure how this team will have any confidence going forward as constructed. Westbrook once again made some horrible decisions down the stretch, and Lakers couldn't execute in final possessions. Confidence looks completely broken.

Russ said in the locker room that he was looking for a 2 for 1 on his jumpshot with 27 seconds left. Darvin Ham said he agreed with the impulse to get a 2 for 1, but he wished Westbrook would have attacked the rim rather than pulling up.

Even after today I bet they’re a top 5-6 defense in the league through 3 games. That part of it looks in place— and it shows Ham knows what he’s doing there.

But it’s the worst offense in the NBA. The offense is completely shook and everyone sees it. They should be beyond desperate for a fix there.

It’s cool. I love the Buddy Hield fit.

And Myles will be cool for the 50 games when he’s not in street clothes, minus the handful “he’s playing into shape after coming back from (yet another) injury” games.

All the people pretending that those 27/29 picks somehow don’t matter because it’s more important to get Lebron a 2nd round exit in year 20 will be happy, I guess.

I see no reason *not* to punt this season into the sun and let the wheels fall of in the process.

This is the shitshow season everyone involved in building this roster deserves. I guess we eid get one chip out of it.

But I always wonder what pairing LeBron with some form of the Baby Lakes could have turned into. It's likely that Ingram would have needed to be moved because there is only one basketball and two players who are ball-dominant. But still, I think there's a shadow universe where LeBron gets that team on a Finals run at some point.

Yes, the known for the unknown element of the equation makes a deal a no brainer

But in a free agent year, there’s no way they should have gotten that big a haul

Players and 2 picks, tops, or take a chance on signing him in free agency

We compounded that mistake by going after Kawhi- and letting him play us- instead of, say, Jimmy Butler a year later, when AD would have been a free agent.

I agree that BI probably doesn’t quite happen like this on a Bron team, same as I think Kuzma wouldn’t become his best self on a Bron team.

Thing is, We could have signed him outright and used the talent and draft capital to surround Bron and AD with shooters and defensive players.

Hindsight does a *lot* of work on this one. The one title be damned, this team has been mediocre to dog shit throughout the Bron/Brow era- and a big reason is that we blew large swaths of assets on A. a guy who was already injury prone and continues to be, though this season will tell us more about that, and B. Russ.

AD simply isn’t worth that price. That title is expensive as hell, and the true price may be that we stay trash far longer than anticipated.

But I think "Lakers Exceptionalism" worked against them.

I think a lot of franchises that were in the lead to sign him may have waited the year. But to do so, the team would have essentially wasted a year of LeBron's prime. (we had no idea that prime would last another two years) For as much as the team tries to disavow the notion that LeBron is running the team, there are a lot of decisions that point to the reality that he carries a lot of power, in their personnel decisions - either indirectly or outright.

But this fanbase is championship or bust. It isn't fair or right, but that's what they've expected.

Also, I think the FO operates under the dying idea that they can always attract stars because of the Lakers brand. Personally, I think that's a dying notion. Yeah, they got LeBron. (which is a flex very few teams could make given how unproven the roster was) But if LA was such a destination, why did no one decide to come out to LA until LeBron post-Kobe?

Rob and Magic probably figured they'd get LeBron and AD and figure out the rest later. They likely thought they'd recruit another star or other quality players chasing a ring. They got them both and figured it out for 2020.

For whatever reason, whoever's responsible, it's clear they botched things by bringing in Westbrook. And they make things worse by not buying him out or trading him to cut ties for the best of the rest of the roster. Even if they did trade him for quarters on the dollar. If that deal doesn't get done and they keep much of the roster from '21 and they play well, maybe the sticker shock isn't as intense.

Maybe I'm wrong in that Lakers Exceptionalism isn't dying and that after Rob gets off of Westbrook, they'll retool for '23-'24 and be back near the top of the league.

But we don't know for sure what AD's future is for the next few years and what the roster will look like. Maybe the team can right the ship and we go to the Finals again and/or win a title. At that point, maybe the trade makes more sense in context.

You're right that the team paid a very steep price to only have one title. Maybe higher than what Lakers fans are used to exchanging.

I'm still not checked out of this season yet, though. The early schedule is brutal and will get worse before it gets better. The shooting is horrendous, but it can't stay historically bad for the rest of the year. Even with the poor shooting we've been competitive in two of the three and with even below-average shooting we pull out at least one if not two of those games. In a few weeks, the schedule will let up for a little bit. If we move Westbrook, at least the team's morale will improve and possibly they go on a run.

I know I've ranted here on more than what your original post was about. A lot of the topics here are just thoughts that have come up since the season started and I wanted to get it out there.

1. Trade the 27 and 29 draft picks to get shooting help ASAP. I’m honestly not even necessarily in on the Myles Turner inclusion as much anymore— it’s just so obvious that they need to do whatever they can to get as much shooting as possible. Defense has looked good enough, Bron looks mobile enough, he’s getting to his spots and kicking— it’s just that *no one* is making. And you can’t play fringe NBA shooters like Matt Ryan out of desperation. You need a real fix.

2. Trade AD. And/or Bron, really. Even with the Russ deal expiring, it’s not a sure thing that Bron wouldn’t ask for a trade this summer. You can still right today get very real assets for both, and the Lakers will *always* be a sexy destination for FAs. A fresh set of assets, picks, and cap flexibility for the off-season can get the new regime started sooner rather than later.

But the one thing you can’t do is ride it out. Pelinka has already shown he doesn’t really get that Bron needs to be surrounded with shooters (and so does AD, really). So you can’t trust any FA acquisitions in the off-season with the Russ-created cap space. You’re just begging for another year or two in the dreaded 8th to 11th in the West space.

And I think you can command more for Bron and/or AD closer to the deadline. Bron doesn’t have more than 2-3 seasons left *including the present season*— and could absolutely walk for free after next season. AD could opt out after 2024 and/or ask for a trade too. So, like, you HAVE to show them you’re willing to do what it takes to contend right today, or you have to move on ASAP to maximize return for the stars. No real middle ground here imo.

I don’t know when trading stops and starts this season, but a deal with SA is the best I can see.

I think Myles hammered home my problem with that deal, freak accident or not.

I still think we’re better off waiting jntil midseason. Fuck it. Let them either figure it out or suffer, but we can probably land something better than the SA deal in December.

2 is the best option available IMO. Everyone needs to go IMO. That goes for Jeanie and Rob and everyone else in management, but I digress.

Far as players?

AD isn’t that guy, and he WILL get injured again, and he’s probably one or two more away from a serious decline

The problem i see is, most teams won’t be willing to give us anything truly good for him, but it could help us reclaim draft capital.

Ditto Bron. He’s still all-world, but LeGM is a thing, and LeGM largely sucks. His tenure here hasn’t been great, the title be damned. Everything else has been mediocre to trash.

... is that clearly teams see that the Lakers are over a barrel right now and are happy to ask for the absolute maximum. So I struggle to find a world in which they don't have to deal both the 27 and 29 picks... but, like, is McDermott/Richardson/Poeltl worth two picks? I'd say no, honestly, especially since Dougie is such a one-way player and Poeltl just doesn't really solve any of the Lakers' particular problems (maybe there's a 3-team trade? a non-Laker team could use Poeltl for sure). And the Spurs absolutely would make the Lakers pay both picks to make a deal.

Like, Utah came off Bogdanovic (who would've *easily* been the Lakers' third best player and would've been perfect for creating spacing on offense) for Olynyk, Saban Lee, and a little cash! I feel like there's no way the Lakers didn't try to construct a deal with the Jazz for Bogdanovic/Clarkson/Conley or some combo... but clearly Utah would rather get peanuts for a really good offensive player than make a deal with the Lakers that doesn't extract picks with a lack of protection. There's blood in the water, and the other GMs are content to just sit and wait.

(I kind of wonder if that's why Ainge hasn't dealt Clarkson/Conley yet... maybe he thinks there's a desperate Pelinka offer after a few weeks if he bides his time. Can't blame him for thinking that tbh.)

So yeah, I just have no clue what the Lakers do here. They're in a really tough spot. Wait til the deadline, and there's a good chance you've already blown your shot at avoiding the play-in round. In which case you may as well just ride it out and use the cap space next year... but do they want to play chicken with their two stars, especially when the FO has been so bad in finding free agents with skillsets that match the stars? But if you don't wait for the deadline, you're definitely going to be on the fucked end of a deal and, in a tremendously stacked West this year, still fighting an uphill battle to get homecourt unless you can really find the right pieces.

And really, even if they decide to reboot and trade the stars... is there trust that the FO can competently build a roster around whatever new stars they have? (Maybe with Bron's influence gone, they'd get a little better?) Tough call, regardless.

From there, I'd rather wait, even if the team goes 0-25 before that happens. There's a limit to what we can offer anyways, but at least other teams may be in position to offer a better package to get money off the books and tank in a way that won't incite much scrutiny.

From there, if we're talking a deal TODAY, SA has the best overall package, in that it gives us depth, size, and shooting. Richardson in particular could be a defensive standout on this team, given that's actually been great.

It's not "worth" two picks, but IMO, nothing short of a perennial all star is worth those picks, because we aren't winning shit, and there's no reason to sell them to buy Lebron one extra playoff round.

Far SA, It's just my preference of the "right this minute panic moves".

Frankly, if AD is the guy everyone else seems to think he is, that's a nice package around him and Bron, and they should be able to compete with most teams, most nights, given the team defense, and win a fair amount.

But that's neither here nor there.

My #1 preference is to tank the whole thing and trade everyone, stock up on draft capital and young prospects.

Ideally, Jeanie sells in that scenario, or at least wakes the fuck up and realizes that hiring family and friends of family for everything, all the time, every time, isn't the way to run this team.

6? Maybe even 7? Like, there’s a hardcore talent shortage beyond the top two.

A lot of that is because Bron pushed for Russ and they took up all that money on a player who (a) was never an ideal playoff fit and (b) fell off a cliff anyway. But also… like, resign Malik Monk. Keep Caruso over THT. You *have* to have shooters around Bron.

When the Lakers won the 'chip in 2020 - Pelinka got credit for assembling that roster -- then rightfully got criticized for blowing it up and assembling an abysmal roster. Also - there was a push for Derozan to come to LA (and Bron was on board with that) - but Lakers FO didn't want to do it which set up the Westbrook move in the first place. But beyond the Westbrook deal -- there has been horrible acquisition after horrible acquisition with zero attempt to problem solve (by getting wing shooters on this roster).

So when is the FO going to take responsibility?

Theyve ruined the end of Brons career. Simple as that.

But no I’m not buying into the false bill of goods that is “best duo in the league”. It might be but the rest of the team sucks shit. Don’t panic and trade off picks to make this a 6th seed at best. Honestly? I’d be game for a full on reset but it won’t happen (plus Bron can’t be traded)

to the Cavs.

Went to OT and they cleaned that up. Post game, Mitchell was talking about that, holding himself accountable for that. Still seemed upset that he couldn't close in regulation.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

The more I think about it, the more I think this is the best option.

Like, the Lakers are a good defensive team... but they are the worst offensive team in the NBA. Russ is not only making both sides of the ball worse, but he's also fucking with the chemistry and the overall vibes.

Since it's gonna be really hard to get value in a trade, and I think it'll undoubtedly take some time... I honestly think they have to send him home and see how the team does without him. Yes, the Lakers are short on talent, but there's a very real chance on chemistry alone that it creates addition by subtraction and makes the team look better. Which would also make them look less desperate on the trade market.

And if they keep losing without Russ... well, it's not like Russ was helping them *win,* y'know? There's very little downside to just sending him home imo.

I just don't think he can be in a Laker uniform anymore. We've seen enough.

I don’t even care if he’s traded anymore. Just sit him.

like singlehandedly blowing a near record first half score and 20+ point lead.

the depth was supposed to be their strength going into this season. but the 2nd unit is chaotic...the defense is soft (especially in transition)...and kerr is already getting pissed at the lack of energy/effort.
