"NBA Summer League Post"

"only six?" (c)Chet Holmgren after being told he broke the summer league record for blocks. Josh Giddey only getting better as a passer. Should be some fun games, this summer.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

He also played against nobodies.

But the talent is there. I expect he’ll be great the rest of summer league, and won’t be as good in the preseason games but regardless, I think he’s going to be a good pro.

He'll be on a bad team, and he'll have struggles with efficiency as a rookie, because the strength will likely be an issue early on. But he's also going to have a few wild games and several highlight-level plays. So he'll jam on a dude and make Top 10, or he'll have an 8-block game or something, and ESPN will cover it. Which will then inevitably lead to the Internet proclaiming him "sorry" when he has a 2-point outing shortly after that.

I'm just going to enjoy the Chet ride. OKC should be a *lot* of fun to watch with Shai, Giddey, Chet, and/or Poku (fingers crossed) out there. I don't expect a lot of winning this year, but I expect some very fun basketball.

i still think there's a question about doing against real pros.

also, if his body just won't carry additional bulk, he's gonna have problems.

that said, good debut, but i think you're buying fools gold if this proves to anyone that he's a lock to be a star.

he's still a big wait and see to me.

like, just off that he should get 16 points and 8 boards without blinking which is "good" but obviously "bust-y" for his draft slot, and obviously not anywhere near a star.

so yes, i agree. he'll be good but will he get to star level is still a big question to me.

to Chris Webber’s when he came into the league.

His game is flawless on both ends of the court, and in the next two years
he will be the King’s first option. He is that good.

He is developed already, and is my pick to win rookie of the year.

Webber did a high-efficiency 18-9-4 on a 50-win team as a rookie. That's probably, like, a Top 40 rookie season in post-merger NBA history. Maybe closer to Top 30.

I like Murray, probably more than most... but I can't imagine him sniffing a Webber-level impact as a rookie. Maybe if you see Murray as a multi-year All-Star/future HOF potential player, you could make that projection. I... am not there.

I do think the Murray ROY odds at +1100 have reasonable betting value, though.

efficient player in college, and is a wayyyy better 3pt shooter
than Webber was. He didn’t take them.

But what is really insane is his defense and rebounding.
His ability to get boards, block shots, 3point shooting, and his efficiency
will have him filling up the stat sheet.

I could see him getting 17/9 as a rookie, with a fg pct around 50pct,
and 3pt shooting around 40pct.

Keegan will bring a similar impact. That kid is the real deal, and it’s not
just from what he is doing in the summer league, but what he did at Iowa
in the big ten

I haven’t seen a kid come out of college this polished in a long time.....showcasing
elite POTENTiAL on both sides of the ball.

Like I said, I think he will have a SIMILAR impact as Webber and make the Kings
a PO team in under 2-3 years.

I mean besides them both being power forwards, what do they have in common? And even that doesn't mean much since the function of a power forward is VERY different in 2022 vs. 1993. Like you bring up Keegan's impact shooting 3's vs. Webber not taking them - how many PFs in 1993 were shooting 3s consistently?

You mentioned impact on the Kings which I could maybe see if Webber started his career w/ the Kings, but he was a rookie of the year and all star before he was traded there...

With all the other PFs to compare Keegan to I just don't see Chris Webber at all...completely separate from how good he might be.

similar to what Webber did. It’s not comparing them..

I’m saying Keegan is going to have that same impact with the Kings, and
possibly put up similar numbers that Webber did in his rookie season( Golden State)

He is going to turn the Kings organization around.

The Barkley comparison is there
Overweight
Natural bounce (bruh got up for the throw down but was fouled)
Fluid offense with his back to the basket
and he’s a lot taller than Chuck

He needs to get in NBA shape…but I’d take a chance on him
Alot of natural ability.

In response to Reply # 21

Really like Lofton Jr
He was getting pretty much what he wanted vs us (6ers)
Didn't do much of anything in the 2nd half
I'd dare to say he put up a donut after halftime (stats are lacking for summer league)
and we had 2 frontcourt players that got real tick last year, Reed and Bassey
Looks like he gave Chet the same treatment
Was it all just first half?

In response to Reply # 32

Yeah, Lofton scored like the first three baskets, had 7 points in, like, 90 seconds. After that, he had a pretty normal game-- he shot 5-14 the rest of the game after that, had 3 assists to 4 turnovers, etc.-- and you're right, he scored zero points in the last fifteen minutes.

But "a pretty normal game after a white-hot first 90 seconds" isn't as fun for the people who want to suggest that Chet isn't going to be a good NBA defender after watching a brief summer league clip from Twitter, lol.

Instead of the microwave…he’s a convection oven…LOL
JJJ’s foot surgery probably keeps him out for the calendar year
…but MEM definitely has 10-15mins for Lofton Jr…
I could see him having similar success vs NBA backups
But he’s a couple of years away from being in starter conditioning

IRT boxscores…really odd that stats aren’t really available for these games
+1, when I type NBA into my search it takes me to ESPN
Was trying to get to nba.com, and even they just have a regular boxscore

It's obviously just Summer League, but he really started showing off his passing toward the end of his time at Duke too. It feels like the added space on an NBA floor is just tailored to allow him to shine.

and was a man amongst boys.

Murray ended up leading the entire tournament with 19.7 points per game, finished second in rebounds with 8.0 and was tied for second in plus-minus with a mark of plus-13 all while averaging 30.1 minutes per game.

Stats sheet is going to be lit up every night with close to double doubles,
high plus-minuses, and efficient shooting.

This dude is going to be almost impossible to guard. He is a joy to watch.
I saw some of everybody in his game. I saw some Timmy( spot up
midrange off the backboard). I saw some Webber( rebound, get out on break
,and finish inside). I saw some Dirk( midrange off the wrong
leg). I saw some Steph( long distance 3pt shot running off a screen).

Including the game-saving block.

Still some things to work on, obviously-- playing a little too loose at times, so he's turning it over a little too much (certainly a young star thing), and you would love to see him use his size to post up a little more.

But the shot creation, the passing, and even the defense in the passing lane and on the weak-side... you have to love what you see.

he can stroke it from 3.

It’s not even fair that the dubs are going to have him plus 4 allstars in their

Cam's always been a gunner. Gunner since Day 1. The criticism of him since Day 1, from high school on, has been "this dude doesn't pass." And it's true. He really never has, lol. And he's gotten salty in the past when asked questions about his passing-- here's a little example: https://twitter.com/snynets/status/1494156051465265152?s=21&t=-9fUCj1YeyORAH_L5aXr0g

So he goes out in Summer League, puts up a career-high in assists... and then the first question he hears is a reminder that everyone under the sun knows he's not a guy who looks to get his teammates involved.

So yeah, I didn't really read Cam's response as Nash shade the way it seems everyone on Twitter has, lol. He drops seven assists, the first question he hears is a reminder that this "you don't get your teammates involve" narrative exists, and he rolled his eyes about it. Seems less like Nash shade and more his usual saltiness on this subject.

(I didn't think the question was unfair either, to be clear. I just also get why a 21-year-old who's sensitive on this issue would be sensitive again after he gets a career-high in assists, lol.)

I felt like the obvious buckets where he could leverage his height, he looked amazing (like the alley oop in the back end of the 2nd half was an excellent play by him, his height made all the difference)

then I thought anytime he was matched with physicality he wilted right away. But who knows if coaches are telling him to be mindful of physicality and he's playing extra cautious. Who knows.

That said, he seems -better- offensively than we saw at Gonzaga? Small sample size tho.

Instead of complaining about load management
Why not just make the game shorter?
Scoring is at 120ppg anyway
Cut 8 minutes per game
Wouldn't get as much garbage time
Game would be quicker
and maybe stars wouldn't sit out so many games
?

..They won't sacrifice minutes or games, as that would fuck up the real money.

I don't think most people realize how professional sports truly work.

I'd be interested in seeing the research on the amount of money
the NBA would lose if they reduced games from 82 to 72 vs.
the revenue lost when players sit due to injury or player management.

How many times did we say during the playoffs this year,
"Well if ___ was healthy..."

At some point you have to think about sacrificing the short term revenue in order to make the overall product better.

They could run in game ads...screen in screen...15 seconds...

Halftime analysis is what...3 minutes now...?

I don't think the league will suffer for advertising revenue if the game was shortened by 8 minutes...

+1, there's talk of expansion
