Their revenues are just so much higher than the others. Dominos will fall in the ACC, Big 12, Pac 12, etc. as they bail for the two super-conferences, leaving the rest to figure out what to do next.
We've already heard rumors that Kansas would head to the Big East and just become independent for football, because they prioritize basketball. I kind of fear Duke would do the same if UNC bolted for the Big 10.
All the rivalries and traditions are definitely getting punted in favor of the super conference money pile.

program improving, nor will they go independent. Only ND can get away with that because of their brand and tv contract. What network would give Duke’s football program a TV contract? ...They would lose millions as an independent.

After making a few bowl games, Duke slid back into irrelevance over the last couple of years. Attendance is back to its usual low. They got rid of Cutcliffe, because he’d been phoning it in. When he left, unsurprisingly, it caused a lot of turnover. We now have a new coach who is going to attempt to rebuild from scratch. There is very little tangible excitement about the football program going forward unless the new guy finds a way to make significant changes in a way the majority of coaches in contemporary Duke football history have not.
And our football revenue is not even top 65 in the NCAA. It’s less to do with Duke wanting to punt (heh) the entire football program, and more to do with the fact that we’re significantly less likely to receive an invite to a super conference than Clemson, FSU, Virginia Tech, UNC, Georgia Tech, etc.
Or, to put it another way, Kansas is rumored to be considering a move to the Big East for exactly this reason— they don’t think they’d get an invite to a super conference based on football. And Kansas generates more football revenue than Duke by a pretty healthy amount.

for the class of 2023 , their highest ranking ever. The new head coach is helping the university bring in some quality/decent talent, so the program is headed in the right direction.
They had 4 players selected in the NFL draft in 2020 and in 2021, plus the Covid pandemic interrupted the progression of their football program...
Moving forward, I think they will get back on track and be more competitive. Hell, Duke falls along the lines of a Northwestern, and should be in the Big 10

This is why I pretty much only watch TOSU vs mich state/wisconsin/penn state/and mich
The entire sport just *feels* different since the advent of the playoff
and TOSU is a whole different animal now compared to pre-Urban, 3x..do they even recruit from the inner city Ohio schools anymore? Like Glenville, Warren Harding etc? I feel like its a much more national footprint now, which is cool I guess

if the players are good enough then sure...but the depth and top end talent of Ohio is nowhere near what it used to be. Glenville has fallen off the map.
tbh my interest in recruiting has seriously waned over the past year or two. with NIL and the portal I can't get too preoccupied by what the roster looks like until the ball hits the tee in september.
have no interest in following the recruitment of the quinn ewers of the world.

RIP being romantic about CFB however you could frame it, but it’s weirdly hard to not have a strange and unnecessary feeling of admiration for the boosters and chancellors who pushed us out of the Big 12 back then

just dissolve it all at this point. there is no competitive reason for fans to care about having conferences, since you won't even play half the teams in your new 25-team superpower.

19 million in just one year. That conference completely lost its relevancy in college sports, and I don’t think it’s just a conference thing. I think it’s a regional thing as well.
Moving to California isn’t the stimulating move that it used to be, and most kids are going to the midwest and the south to play sports. UCLA and USC could turn into Nebraska in the Big 10.
And with NIL in existence, more kids are staying home.....

interesting bit I was watching Rece Davis on ESPN and he pretty much said the ACC's "grant of rights" isnt worth the paper it's written on. so i expect the SEC and Big 10 to pick off what they want from that conference. and fairly soon
