"2022 NBA Conf Finals (Continued)"

..Wiggins is the current talk of The Town.

He's the textbook example of why there are so many moving parts to developing professional athletes (from average to elite). Securing the bag is only part of the process. Putting in the work/time is only part of the process. Being in the right environment (including communication & guidance) is essential.

GSW continues to prove that you can win without leveraging your entire future on a gamble.

..overreactions are common with today's media.

He clearly stated that he had no idea why they'd make such a trade at the time (he could've stopped there), then stuck his foot in his mouth with that dumbass prediction.

Considering how terrible Wiggins was in Minnesota, especially in regards to that contract, I think questioning that trade at the time was a completely reasonable and justifiable take.

But anyone saying "Player X will never win another title ever," or "it's over for Team Y," especially because of a *single move,* when basically any player is movable in one way or another and careers are long as shit...

... yeah. They never just stop with the reasonable take. lol.

that has settled in nicely as a role player on a championship level team. He’s not KD but he’s better than Harrison Barnes.

Overall his numbers aren't that different from what he did in Minnesota he's just more efficient and I think that may have something to do with being on the floor with the greatest shooter ever.

..for all parties involved, since he was drafted #1 overall.

Its not like the talent and potential wasn't there. How much of the criticism he faced can be attributed to being drafted by/traded to teams that clearly weren't capable of maximizing those assets?

When the Warriors traded for him, most talking heads were puzzled. Given the opportunity to contribute, grow, and flourish without the constant expectation to carry the load each night has done wonders for Wiggs.

a couple spots later I think the expectations would've been different. Looking back that was a weird draft anyway, 2 of the top 5 are out of the league. Embiid went 3rd and had some MVP hype but we all know it took him a while to get going. Jokic went in the second round of that same draft.

failing to get to the mountaintop while hes individually dominant or in the middle of his prime. but maybe getting a chip a lil later in his career once he really has a good set of complementary pieces and tweaks his game a bit for the benefit of the entire team.

If I recall correctly, that Portland series was a really fun one too - sorta the last gasp of Brandon Roy as we knew him. I feel like it was 2-2 at some point?

Then they beat the brakes off the back to back champions in a sweep.

Then they beat the baby Thunder.

Then they went up against the Heatles and made Bron have his literal worst series of his career.

Really a crazy one.

that was a good run but before that Dirk was mostly known for choking in the first round, mainly in 2007 against the 8th seed "we believe" Warriors after winning league MVP.

And Jason Terry saved his ass from choking 2011 away because in that Finals Dirk didn't really play all that great.

I think its way too early to be writing off Luka at 23. If folks had told Mark Cuban before the season they'd be playing in the WCF against the Warriors he would've thrown a parade. A lot of people had written off Giannis getting a title before last season. Similar to the Wiggins discussions I think people try to judge players way too fast.

The Dirk who won Finals MVP averaging 26 and 9.6?

He got saved by Jason Terry...who outscored him in exactly one of six finals games? Who averaged 18 points and 2 rebounds?

Cmon, man.

Dallas smartly built a team of defensive role players around him to win a title.

It is what it is.

They may have to do the same thing for Doncic. Hopefully they realize it sooner.

And Dirk eviscerated the Lakers in 2011 and swept the 2 time defending champs in the second round, permanently ending any pretensions Kobe had towards Jordan's GOAT throne. I see why you're still so mad at Dirk for that.

They even mentioned a stat about Luka tying Dirk for most 40 point playoff games. Then they mentioned Dirk was 6-2 and Luka is now 2-6. Had the audacity to mention Luka and Larry Bird in the same breath. Luka is not even the best Maverick of all time. He is not better than Dirk. Maybe one day, but right today, not even close.

I agree on principle that it's insanely unlikely for any young talent, regardless of how talented, to pass a player who ended up with the caliber career Dirk had.

But, like, all it takes is Dallas to land one legit 2nd option free agent... and then this conversation might shift very, very swiftly, lol.

I'm also the guy who said on here as a stupid youth that Dirk would never win a title, and I got burned, lol. So I learned then (if not years later after more years of being a stupid youth) that any sort of "never" statement about sports talent, especially when they're still years from their prime, is... perhaps not the most advisable, lol.

inflated his teammates value with how good he made them look and added a few digits their next contract.

like all of them.

dude made mo williams an all star.

does luka actually make people better? dinwiddie was dinwiddie before dallas. so we already knew his ceiling. brunson is upping his value mostly based on his 1 on 1 play. and bullock, kleber, etc are gonna be the exact same spot up shooters on any team they play for.

Debatable on if Luka is making anyone better. Dinwiddie has been a player for sure, but Brunson looks like a fringe one time all star kinda dude right today...and that could be because he's playing with Luka, but I don't watch the Mavs enough to really argue either way.

As a Laker fan, it felt great to see Bullock go 0-10 the other night because every 3 point shooter we get dips 20% when they come here, easily. As soon as Reggie left he became a sniper again. Nice to see the old Laker Bullock is still there.

Anyway - my point is - these don't look dissimilar to the lottery Cavs teams/2nd round KO type teams that Bron had early in his career. Luka is not Lebron - obviously. But his squads have been bad...even if they thought they were getting the good KP...they did not.

Offense looks faster and the players look like they're in a better flow. As soon as Luka comes back in it becomes a half court offense of either stand and watch Luka or jack up threes.

...ESPN/sports pundits REALLY thought this series was going to be Luka's "'07 Cavs vs Pistons series" where he beats a former championship team for dolo and then heads to the finals. Figured it would very much feed into the "young Luka = young LeBron" narrative.

Likely the closest he gets this year is beating the Suns in the semis. Otherwise, the Warriors are just different.

hindsight is 20/20...but the suns shitting the bed prolly made the mavs look a lot better than they really are. i mean...based on that series...everybody thought the dallas d was gonna give the warriors fits. reality hits and they pretty much look like swiss cheese.

that suns series was looking like sweep material until cp3 went into witness protection for the rest of the series and ayton apparently was staying up too late playing 2k.

for the chip.

regardless of the outcome of this game.

not being this up and down from game to game and giving up these back breaking runs regularly.

this series might arguably be 4 straight non competitive finishes if jimmy didnt get hurt and depending on how this one finishes.

I can't help but feel like the Heat would be chicken feed for the Warriors. Fully admit that most of the basketball media I listen to has a heavy Celtics bias and has barely talked about the Heat all year, and I also recognize this is a 2-2 series that's been a bonkers example of back and forth quarters, let alone halves or full games.

Yet...it was popular to say the Mavs shaped themselves into an elite 3 and D team since the Porzingis trade and that they'd made it clear that they were some kind of evolution of the Iverson 76ers (OK, I might be making that part up) in these playoffs...but even if that comparison were a 1:1 for this era, that team DID get beat up on by a far more experienced and offensively talented team, and we're seeing that again in the WCF, and I don't see how anybody could expect Butler to do Luka things while his teammates / coaches scheme to stop two of GSW's five 20 point guys.

We just saw a prime example of how that doesn't work as Poole became a total ghost while finding ways to contribute meanwhile Bullock just...actually sucked. I think the Warriors could easily do that to the Heat in 4 out of 5 or 6 games. I can't help but root for the Celtics at this point because it just feels like a more interesting series. I even pulled up Land of Basketball and found the Celtics generally much more competitive with the Warriors the past three years than the Heat, even understanding the last three years of GSW weren't the last two months I still think in its own way that says something.

The ups and downs have been nuts. Like that Grizzlies/Warriors blowout game without Ja Morant and the Grizzlies up by 55 at one point. Over the Warriors. Who blew them out in a couple games and are now up 3-0 in the conference finals…and stuff like this has happened in a bunch of other matchups this year…

Way more runs, way more long droughts, way more blowouts.

I hate the lack of balance in the game. The league was amazing to watch 10 years ago, or so. Those Spurs-Heat years was great ball to watch. Been a gradual decline since, accelerating in the last few years.

I’m watching more hockey than basketball these playoffs. And I couldn’t give a damn about hockey and hoops is my life. But these games suck, and the hockey games are holding my attention.

I watched Better Call Saul last night. Wasn’t even a thought to DVR it and watch it another time after watching that 18-1 start to the game.

Hell, Boston clawed to 1 point down in game 3. A 26 point turnaround used to happen so incredibly rarely - and we've seen huge comebacks throughout just these playoffs. I dunno - it sometimes makes for a bad game, but it means teams with the 3 ball going are never out of it.

i low key wonder if the school shooting, and Kerr's reaction had anything to do with tonight (their effort, rotations, whatever).

definitely not professional and he'd probably never admit it, but after that pregame presser i could definitely see him going "fuck it" tonight.

even in a loss...take the fun moral victory cutting the lead to a small margin with your 2nd/3rd string.

it to 8 and then the starters came back and the Mavs ran away with it.

didn't seem to be a great decision even tho i think the Mavs win regardless, but everyone coming off the bench cold as hell probably not gonna work.

i expect the Warriors will by double digits at home next game. not cuz of the comeback here, just cuz.

imagine being down 3-1...running an offense based on 1000 pick and rolls with your best player to shake off the primary defender and hunt for more favorable matchups...hiding your star on defense and praying he can stay in front of any ball handler for more than 2 seconds before help comes...doubling your opponents star as soon as he crosses half court...

...and saying the other team cant guard you 1 on 1.

And these two are the best defensive teams in the league.

It’s like Winky Wright vs Bernard Hopkins. It just makes for an ugly
looking fight.

Warriors don’t play defense like this or had to deal with any dog playing
defenses.

Both teams would be a huge Achilles to the warriors because they both have good inside bigs.

Warriors had issues against Adams, and Dallas has zero inside game.....

No matter if it’s Hortford/ Williams or Bam.....Looney won’t be able to mess with that.

outrebounded the grizz in those 2 wins including a 22 rebound night with looney (when brown/draymond finally made the right lineup adjustment).

warriors also won 2 of 3 games without steven adams in the lineup.

people keep saying the warriors are supposed to have issues with these bigger teams but somehow they keep winning the rebounding and points in the paint battles.

the real question is...since its about styles...how is boston gonna score with golden state? that side of the ball matters too lol.

rebounds in 3 straight games. Now Looney did have that one 22 rebound game,
but other than that he really wasn’t a factor in that series, because he made for a
bad match up. Green started at center.

Williams is a whole other monster, and so is Bam. Memphis made for a tougher
matchup than Dallas, because they had a serious inside presence in Jackson,
Clarke and Adams. Dallas has zero inside the paint, so Looney and Wiggins are
able to eat all day long.

In the middle, is where the GSW are weak because Looney can be exploited,
and they will get ate up on the glass if they go small with Green.

Wiggins will be forced to guard Tatum. Draymond on Brown...so who is going
guard Williams and Hortford? Looney? Otto?

Every last player in the Celtics rotation can defend, except for Payton. I just believe
the Memphis series was foreshadowing, and the only reason they lost was because
they were inexperienced.

I would take the Celtics 4-2......Warriors are a turnover machine and Boston
will exploit the hell out of that, and be the far superior team inside the paint.

it sounds nonsensical to accuse a major sports outlet of having an anti warriors bias because the team/stars are so popular and people generally love them. and in the past espn has generally dickrode steph and dubs even when it prolly wasnt deserved.

but damn its mad different right now for no logical reason.

now they treat the warriors like some fatally vulnerable team even tho they are undefeated at home, won at least 1 road game in every series, and havent sniffed a game 7 yet.

meanwhile when they talk about boston...they talk about their offensive 'firepower' and 'high game iq'. huh? these niggas lost a game at home to miami with no jimmy butler for most of it. 2 of the 4 games so far they gave up 20+ runs on d and had no offense to be able to overcome that (warriors damn near erased a 29+ last night with their *bench*).

i mean...stephen a *picked* the warriors to win the chip! and now...instead of gloating about their dominance in this playoffs and doubling down on his pick...he is expressing anxiety/regret over the pick...and elevating boston...based on the celtics erratic and inconsistent play in this shitty ass series?

when have you ever known stephen a *not* to double down on his take...even when its completely wrong? lol.

shit is bizarro world right now.

The Heat squad is just decimated with injuries. It’s clear as day. By the
fourth, they were done. But they played hard.

Jimmy is seriously injured, and so is Lowry. Herro’s hamstring is shot,
and even Gabe looks gimpy as hell.

Then it turned into a blowout. I agree about the injuries. But the first three games were blowouts before the injuries. I was just looking forward to these two teams meeting all year in the playoffs and none of these games have been very watchable.

the little things like the fake dribble hand offs.

obviously as a homer its been fun for the last 8 years or so

but I think for the league overall, we may not see this kind of chemistry that can build between two guys over the course of playing so long together. Players move around to other teams too much for it now

and the math consistently keeps mathing.

4-1 vs denver and dallas when they had home court adv (aka warriors only need 5 games to get to 3 home games)

4-2 vs memphis when grizz had home court adv (aka warriors need 6 games to get to 3 home games)

Man, don’t let this team win the finals, or I will act a damn fool.

Of course - like anyone else, they've been lucky. Steph's ankles healed right around the time he became the best shooter we've ever seen - which meant the contract situation was unlike most max-level players.

They have this amazing group of players, all of whom have bought in - then they win a title. Then they become the best regular season team of all time. Then they land KD. Then they snag 2 more titles. Then he leaves and they manage to get a good player who doesn't quite fit out of his bouncing. Then they turn THAT guy into Wiggins, who is playing the Harrison Barnes role better than Barnes ever did.

Oh and they developed Poole.

Oh, and they've still got a #2 pick rehabbing. Who knows what he can be but...turns out they kinda don't need him.

Quite the 8 year stretch they've had.

In response to Reply # 165

for a LOT of squads. (i think jp the oldest at around 23? wise might can legally drink, and moody and jk are 19).

all of them have talent and, more importantly, the only nba they know is one immersed in a culture where everybody busts they ass in practice and the offseason, and the best player subverts his individual stats and glory for the sake of the team. AND they got a combination of bball scholars in terms of iq, and sorcerers in terms of the intangible shit they be doing as a unit.

the role players are on some maximize every ounce of their potential shit (jta, dlee, etc). the journeyman vets (bjelica and otto) bought into it and have flourished. and then you got a cat like Looney who just squeezes every ounce of effort and impact out of his body day in, day out.

they learning from dray, klay, steph, iggy. but with younger bodies and waaaay more athleticism. (poole turning into a steph/klay hybrid solves the problem they used to have of what to do when you had to rest one).

and then you have a coach who plays everybody (and he's been doing this for years), so that it's not even unusual to have a rookie playing clutch minutes in a wcf elimination game. by the time them kids make it through the end of the season they are playing like vets.

sky and the luxury tax is the limit.

Lowry limped into the stadium and his availability is
questionable. He has a lingering hamstring issue.
Jimmy is listed as questionable, and is receiving treatment on his knee.
PJ Tucker also has an injury designation.

Bam is the only one in the starting lineup who doesn’t have an injury
designation. I can’t a recall any other team in NBA history having 4 of its
five starters severely injured during a conference finals.

the celtics are supposed to be loaded with offensive firepower (espn). yet their top 2 weapons cant get off on the miami heat when it counts most.

the celtics are supposed to have an historically great defense (espn). yet they cant stop the heats sole offensive weapon from torching them for 45 with 17 in the 4th.

im still going warriors in 5 but im close to calling a sweep.

But as we’ve seen…he can’t do it alone, and he probably won’t be able to pull another one out like that. I’d be surprised to see Lowry put up another 18 point game too.

If the Heat are gonna win this thing at home - Bam’s gonna need to be way better.

Of the two series, I thought surely DAL/GSW would go longer, and even when the tables turned I could've never imagined Jimmy and the Heat would do what they did in Game 6 (and I'm the one that pointed out a team with Riley as prez and Spo as coach would be uniquely situated to realize that they're in this position twice in two years at all is a goddamn miracle they'd inspire their guys to take advantage of)

Hell, I was working Friday night and had the opportunity to pull the game up for the second half on my phone but the stream I like to use wasn't working right away, I saw it was what, 44-47 Heat at the start of the third or whatever and shrugged it off thinking the Celts obviously were gonna go odd in the second half on their busted ass legs.

It's to the point...honestly, I'm sure Boston would give the Warriors a series and I'm nearly as sure the Heat would lose in 5 at absolute best...but I kinda want to see Jimmy give it a shot. Even if he doesn't get a chip as a lead guy or ultimately at all, he can still say he took two teams nobody saw coming to the mountaintop against LeBron and Steph. You'd have to be, well, a hater to hate that.

You see how immature and soft Minnesota is, and also how Philly still just can’t manage to congeal … and then when you consider what Butler’s done in the postseason since getting there?

He’s the penultimate overachiever. Like if you put Draymond’s spirit in Paul George’s body.

Turns out he was 100% right about Kat and the Wolves. And now he’s a game away from willing his team to the Finals AGAIN.

I don’t like how he went about his last few exits, but he was right.

this why i rock w/ jimmy. i feel like he a cat that worked his way to complementary all-star status and then ends up having to be THE dude on squads when the all-stars ain't all-starrish enough.

He commits 2 unnecessary fouls and passed up wide open 2 point shots, only
to have to force up a shot in the last second.....which led to transition buckets
on the other end.

Celtics scored 13 points in transition.

They just handed over a double digit lead.

Gabe Vincent is kind of dumb, too.

You knew it was coming with a Scott Foster crew. The NBA has always been openly corrupt with this but it still sucks to see it play out. Celtics gotta play through it and take it to the Heat. Control the game. IF they let the Heat take the game to them then it's a wrap. No lead is safe when they're looking to call every ticky tack thing they can against you.

In response to Reply # 198

serious question.

the celtics are one of the higher rated teams in the nba. they have the highest rated game in the regular season, the highest rated game in the playoffs, and their series against the bucks was the highest rated eastern semis in the last 10 yrs.

seems logical the nba would actually want them to pair up with another big ratings draw (warriors) in the finals right?

He’s the only guy on his team who transcended “athletic and gritty” and actually got fuckin buckets. Adebayo got bullied on the boards in the 4th quarter by senior citizen Al Horford.
Don’t say shit.

Jim missed, that’s unfortunate. But if that’s a make he maybe would have ended the series then and there.

Boston better get its rest. They played a team that was woefully undermanned offensively and barely won a 7 game series. Make no mistake - they did win the series! But the longer the playoffs went the sloppier they got. Somehow they managed to still win but I feel that’s the benefit of playing against Miami.

Smart tried to shoot them out of it at the end. If Butler hits it he’s an icon. Criticizing that shot is a dork move.

to win the game.

He played the entire game with no rest. He wasn’t trying to see OT or give Boston
the last possession to win the game.

He went for the kill, and I have no problem with that.

it was clear his foot wasn't on the line unless they have a replay they haven't shown us.

if that's on the board, the Heat are UP by one in that case and Jimmy definitely not taking that shot he's either holding to run time off or the Celtics are fouling to put him at the line so they can get the ball back.

He also travelled but they're not going to call that. The real argument is do you think they should be allowed to reverse the call if they miss it?

I agree, it looked good, it barely missed, and I think for this specific team in this specific game it made more sense to play for the win than five more minutes of game. As fun as it is to dump on the Celtics for the series even coming to that shot, I think it’s also that exact level of fuck you attitude that willed the Heat to push it this far.

The best argument against it is obvious - Butler is a statistically poor long range shooter for his era, but statistically poor shooters have made epic shots in every era. The man took his shot. I’m sure he’ll sit with it just fine.

And then look into how those teams usually performed. I'm not gonna go all Stats & Info, I just wanna kill some time before pre-Top Gun brunch on a not-so-sleepy Memorial Day. I'm sure there will be many holes here. For sake of pretending to be an actual guy, I started from NBC Sports' list of teams with the most W/ECF appearances, then checked against their results on Bref for streaks of W/ECFs, or streaks broken by just a year, that they didn't get over the hump into the NBAF.

I'm also gonna limit myself to the modern post-expansion period from 2004 (the Bobcats) because, again, I'm not supplying chyrons to ESPN and I bet there will be errors and oversights here! I'm just sipping coffee and catching up on a backlog of baseball podcasts! Yea, baseball podcasts! And because that's the background, and specifically Effectively Wild, I will just be reminding everybody of lots of stuff that's unimportant and irrelevant to this post's theme. But I'll be far less longwinded, promise!

You could also say I'm trying to remind myself that I was pretty excited about the potential of a GSW/BOS Finals just 30 days ago and hope maybe this sorta post, depending on how this cursory search goes, could remind many of y'all of the same despite what we all just saw in May.

So...

LAKERS: Since 2004, they either win the Finals, lose the Finals, fall out of the playoffs before the Conference or don't have any stake in the outcome to begin with. The Post-Shaq years were truly an extended rollercoaster ridden by a superstar (or two) unparalleled by any other major team of this era. Though I expect one other team might look a bit similar in just a bit...

CELTICS: It's actually striking looking at this right after the Lakers' page. But it also feels really appropriate for this specific city, right? Just outside my window, they lost in the 01-02 season, slowly slipped away, famously won the Finals...and then in almost every year since '09-'10 (RIP KG's leg), they've either lost in the first round or lost in the Conference. This is a team that doesn't experience arcs, it just drifts through a malaise of fairly awesome and that's quite bizarre.

SPURS: I think I've lost the plot and that's cool - wasn't I supposed to mention how many times these teams lost consecutively or nearly so? - but these guys, as we all know, rode the lightning better than any team in the modern NBA - most interesting to me, unlike the previous two teams, the ONLY time they lost in the same round of the playoffs in back to back years were the 17-18 and 18-19 seasons, clearly the end of a spectacular run.

BULLS: If you want an inverse of what the Celtics have experienced, it's the Bulls. Since the 2004 season they've lost in the 1st round 8 times, twice in back to back years and once back to back with a four year break in between (this most recent loss backed by 16-17). Reflecting back on the original gimmick, they made it that one year, we all remember what year it was, and we all remember why they didn't go further. Still, for my money, the most significant injury of this 2004-onward era. In a bit of shade, the PISTONS haven't been to the ECF in just as long, but we don't need to talk about that.

THUNDER: That 2012-2013 loss to the Grizzlies (DECISIVE!) really sours a stretch that could've been an interesting comparison to the Celtics. Granted, there's an actual Finals appearance slotted in there, but I'm gonna go ahead and predict that I've already come to the realization - as violent as the Durant/Westbrook tandem felt on paper, the Celtics have built the most comprehensive collection of young, talented and unaccomplished players of the modern era.

Did I even do the thing? I pretty much doubt it! But I had some fun, I think at least one or two lurkers will enjoy the obvious conclusions of this exercise paired with some enthusiastic prose and...well...Top Gun Maverick is just a few scant hours away! Time to decide whether it's an Aperol Spritz or Mimosa sort of Memorial Day morning!

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
