https://www.landofbasketball.com/player_comparison/chris_paul_vs_john_stockton.htm

Regular season for their career, CP3 is at 18 ppg, 9.5 apg while Stockton is at 13.1 and 10.5.

Playoffs? CP3 is at 20.4 and 8.3, Stockton at 13.4 and 10.1.

CP3 has 7 all-defense first team to Stockton's zero. Four all NBA first teams to Stockton's 2. 12 all star games (and counting) to Stockton's 10. Plus a rookie of the year.

John Stockton is the career leader in Assist.

John Stockton had 15 seasons where he played all 82 games,
and played 82 games in 7 straight seasons.

Availability is also a part of being great!

John Stockton was focking Ironman during the most physical era
of the NBA

Chris Paul is made of toilet tissue.

To be overrated at this level you gotta be mentioned by a good chunk of people. My dad is 72, grew up in that era and often brings up old greats from that time, and even he doesn’t mention Cousy as one of the top PGs of all time.

He shot pretty decently from 3 (38% for the career) but on only 1.5 attempts a game (right around 3 at most). He was an incredible passer and great defender. I’m not sure there’s a comp for him that’s playing today.

All that said gimme CP3 over him all day. Chris never played with a top 5 positional teammate ever.

He’s the all time steals leader by a wide margin. But I always thought of him as someone who racked up steals because he was so good at playing the passing lanes, which was an extension of him being an elite passer himself. But as an on the ball defender? I don’t know…

It's really tough to find a comparison. Even at the time, it's not like the league was full of John Stockton types.

Add to that Utah's halfcourt focused game...

Both of them are talented players but it's a big difference:

Chris Paul is ghost when it comes time to win. A flopper, poor sport, and at times, a flat out quitter.

Stockton played hard all the time, was tough as nails, never faking injuries to hide from blowouts. And did so in an era when basketball was much more of a contact sport.

I would take Stockton 10 times out of 10 if I'm trying to win a title.

Paul too busy kissing up to league executives and missing games

His career assist average ...6

The year philly won the chip with Malone and Dr.J he averaged 6 assists a
game. Stockton would have put up 15 assists every night.

Stop.

Kevin Johnson? He isn’t even in the hall of fame.

Don’t turn this into some racial thing....if Stockton were black, this
wouldn’t even be a debate....the fact that he mentioned mo cheeks over
Stockton...hell no. Mo ain’t even a top ten pg.

I watched Stockton play and dude was a straight up dog....Mo wasn’t, KJ wasn’t,
Chris Paul soft ass isn’t. That white dude could just flat out ball.

John Stockton wasn’t offensively gifted??

Quality over quantity!

John Stockton shot 50pct from the field 12 times! Had a season where
he shot 57pct from the field. Those are numbers that centers average!

John Stockton shot 40 pct from three 7 seven times! He had a season where he
shot 44 pct. Chris Paul shot 40 pct 2 times.

Chris Paul only had one season of shooting 50pct from the field.

QUALITY, EFFICIENCY.

John Stockton focused on making players better instead of looking
to drop 30 a game, something he could have done with great
efficiency.

Chris Paul is tough?

How many seasons did Chris Paul play all 82 games?

1 ... 1 focking season, mainly averaging 63 games a season.

How many seasons did Stockton play all 82 games?

16!

16 seasons during the most physical era in nba history.

So Chris being 37 ain’t got shit to do with him being soft his entire
career.

lol @ you flouting percentages and quantity over quality...yea no.

dude's career average is 13 points

he averaged 17 points in 1988 89 and steadily declined offensively after that.

the Pedophile Mailman was actually held back by Stockton's inability to take over a game when he was having a bad one.

Pretty sure Hornacek was their go-to shooter in clutch moments.

Nick Van Axel was better than John Stockon.

Tim Hardaway

Kenny Anderson

Stephon Marbury

Terrell Brandon

Sam Cassell

I could go on and on.

Stockton was overrated.

You probably think Shawn Bradley is better than Joel Embid

Put the pipe down.

He is the epitome of todays’ players.

50 pct shooter
Close to 40 pct from 3
Defensive stud
High IQ
And a genius facilitator.

Rick Rubio is the closest to a John Stockton with his masterful facilitating,
high IQ and quality defense...he just doesn’t have the shooting. If Rubio
had the shooting? Shittt

Log off, fam, and get your brain cell count tested.

Imagine John Stockton the point guard for Memphis? As great as Jones was
Stockton would have put them over to get to the chip.

John Stockton is a prime example of a pure, elite PG.

Stockton was basically a 50/40/90 guy in the 90s where pg focused
on facilitating ....you put him in this era with weak physicality and players
allowed to shoot 3s whenever, he would light shit up. In this weak
ass defensive era?

You gotta be trolling.

This is a guy who was guarded by the likes of the pistons, Gary Payton, defensive
masters like Dennis Johnson and Sydney Moncrief ...and always go his
numbers. And he was tough as nails ...never missed games

It would be similar to Nash but far superior on defense and facilitating.

You got players like Williams hitting 30 off just chucking threes.

the game totally different. Defensive hand-check rule changes turned a guy like Steve Nash from a borderline All-Star into a 2-time MVP.

Bread and butter offensive moves of today's players like the "step-back" and "euro-step" would be whistled for traveling in the 80's & 90's.

There’s not a rule change in existence that would make Stockton jump higher, run faster, and 3-4 inches taller
To your point, the game has changed
Which was my original point about Kevin Duckworth
Alot of those guys wouldn’t make a roster today.

what's the point of that link? Iverson did the same thing to Mike, I guess he wouldn't make a roster today either?

Most of these smaller guards today would not nearly be as great in the 90's if they had to play by those defensive and offensive rules.

Gary Payton was the last guard prior to Marcus Smart this year to win DPOY. He credits a lot of what he did to learning from playing against Stockton.

IRT the link
Everyone has that move in the bag today
Just like the step back you mentioned earlier…everyone has that move in the bag

The plea cops allude to Stockton’s ‘grit’
IMO, that’s not enough to make him competitive vs today’s players

IRT the 90s, I don’t disagree
Concession on your part
Unathletic and undersized doesn’t have a place in today’s game.

Joel Embiid out here crossing people over and hitting step backs at 7’1”
and I honestly believe Jerry Sloan would’ve benched him for even trying it

This isn’t the 80s/90s…you think Stockton would be crossing people over and hitting step backs…?

is less athletic than Ja runs the point far better. You make zero sense and
don’t know anything about basketball.

Basketball is about ability, skill and IQ. Luka has shit athleticism and can’t jump, and
is not fast. He is a terrible defender, but his high IQ, his skillset, and his ability allows him to dominate the game. Luka mentally dominates the games. Jokic who can’t jump
to save his life, and has zero muscle, dominated the game with his intelligence and
fundamentals.

Stockton was that type of player, just fundamentally sound with great shooting and passing ability, and unlike Luka and Jokic, he was an elite defender.

But he wouldn’t make a roster?

Stockton would average 15/12 in this era, possibly even more points, because he
would be allowed to shoot 3s at a higher rate.

Like Is said, Gary Payton patterned his game after John Stockton and said he
was the toughest player he ever had to guard....

Dude, really get a grip of yourself.

bigger guards able to their hands on them and steer them offensively would limit their effectiveness.

John Stockton who played against Wilkins, Ewing, Payton, Jordan,
Pippen, Kemp, Robinson, Zeke, Barkley, Bird, Magic...the greatest of the
greats, but he wouldn’t make today’s roster?

Where players like ish Smith, Gabe, Satoransky, Graham, get minutes as PGs
and are some of the most terrible pgs in the league.

Jordan, Rodman and Pippen are considered the greatest defensive players of
all time at their position.

In the finals against the Bulls Stockton averaged 13/9, 50 pct shooting and 80 pct
from FT.

Gary Payton said John Stockton was the toughest player ever had to guard:

“John Stockton is because I liked him when I was playing basketball. Everyone said he was dirty. He wasn't as athletic as us. But he was smarter than us. We knew what he was going to do. We knew he was going to set picks. We had all the videos on Utah. We were so dumb. We would get caught up with the picks and get mad at him. He would shoot eight times and make nine. Shoot eight free throws and make seven. He'd have 15 assists and four steals. A complete game. That's just the way he was and I idolized him. I just imitated him while going about my business, talking trash and getting it done. After the game you would look at my stats and it would be right there.”

But you who never played nba ball in your life...you know more than Payton.
Todaya’s nba is highly skilled and technical which is what john’s game was.
John Stockton was ahead of his time.

You really sound foolish.

and like 20 pct from 3, with zero defense and leadership skills.

Westbrook wouldn’t be able to carry John Stockton’s jockstrap. Westbrook
is one of the dumbest players in nba history. John was one of the smartest and
toughest players in NBA history. ....possibly the toughest ever.

John played on the Dream Team after breaking his fibula 4 weeks prior!
