"OKS Spring/Summer Boxing Post"

We've had some very good fights recently (Spence/Ugas, Serrano/Taylor, Stevenson/Valdez), and some other big ones coming up. I'll post the schedule (more or less) below.

5/7 - Canelo vs. Bivol
5/14 - Charlo vs. Castano 2, Ennis vs. Clayton
5/21 - Benavidez vs. Lemieux
5/28 - Tank vs. Romero (for as long as that lasts)
6/4 - Haney vs. Kambosos
6/7 - Inoue vs. Donaire 2
6/18 - Beterbiev vs. Smith Jr.
7/9 - Magsayo vs. Vargas
7/23 - Usyk vs. Joshua 2

A few random thoughts on what's happened and what could happen:

- Spence vs. Ugas went as expected: exciting, but predictable. As much as boxing politics can get in the way sometimes, we actually might've lucked up. The timing is better than ever for Spence vs. Crawford. It would now be for undisputed, and both are coming off of big wins vs. top 5 WW's. Even bigger is that Bud is a free agent.
- Serrano vs. Taylor is FOTY so far IMO. Lubin vs. Fundora would be a second, but the ladies delivered on a level that exceeded expectations. I hope they rematch.
- On my boxing pod, we did a p4p ranking at the beginning of the year, and I had Stevenson at #10. My co-hosts were saying it may have been a bit premature, but I'm thinking it may have been too low.

Feel free to share any thoughts below.

It's gonna be interesting to see whether or not Canelo is bothered by his power. If so, it's gonna be an interesting fight. If not, he's gonna coast to a decision or stop him late

He reminds me of Winky Wright a lot…constantly probing w the left and keeping perfect distance

Put on a clinic , I don’t think he’ll dazzle with knockouts but just constant barrages until the refs stop it or the corner throws in a towel

Valdez And Reynoso come cheaters bro..Miguel Berchelt lost to a 💉 Valdez

I could see him getting up to 140 as he continues to grow into his grown man body

I could def see the comparison

Yeah, I think Valdez vs. Conceicao was a better indication of who he is as a fighter. I think he'll be a champ again once Shakur moves up, just hope he does it clean

I was so hyped hearing Spence, in the post fight say "Like I said, I was gonna get these straps and then I was gonna go over there and take his shit too... Terence, I'm coming for that muhfuckin belt!"

Even seeing their back and forth on twitter right now, is so entertaining.

And side note, it was hilarious in Spence's post-fight when he said "he hit me and I was like aw shit, then he kept hitting me and i was like aww damn"

Was a little disappointed we didn't have a post.

We all pretty much knew Shakur was gonna beat Valdez, the question was whether he was gonna win a wide decision or a close one. Question answered. I really wish Shakur had more power, because he's so damn skilled, and it's the one thing he lacks. He already looks damn near unbeatable, and if he had ko power, he'd be scary. Hope we get keep getting these great match-ups at 130-135.

And Serrano/Taylor was great. They've definitely gotta run that one back. I think Serrano might've punched herself out in the 5th (or whatever round that was) because she took her foot off the pedal in the next round when she should have poured it on. Impressive to see Taylor fight back after almost getting ko'd there.

Agree. Maybe Bud was just disengaged from previous opponents or just over Arum (his fault for signing the extension), but he seems very much up for this fight. The build up is gonna be crazy and it's genuinely close to a 50/50 fight.

>And side note, it was hilarious in Spence's post-fight when he

Lmao I agree. He's unintentionally funny at times

Valdez had a high guard for the entire fight and still left with a cut swollen pizza face

Is there anything/anyone left for him at 130?

But he's got literally everything else.
At 130... there's really not much. He could unify... but the all of the big fights are at 135. He and Valdez were pretty much the last people hanging around at 130.

But he certainly has respectable power. To be fair, I think a lot of people equate "power" to be "one shot KO power" in boxing

>Luckily he was so dominant he won by 2 lol

Canelo was hitting arm the whole night, dude left the ring with the same babyface he walked in with (did you know he was half Korean? I had no idea)

We need Beterbiev vs Bivol now.

Chechnya vs Russia.

Top Rank and DAZN need to put aside their differences and get it done.

15. "My thoughts re: Canelo vs. Bivol"
In response to Reply # 0

A few interesting things about the CompuBox:
- The 10th round was the only round where Bivol landed single digit punches (8). Even then, he STILL outlanded Canelo 8-6.
- The 9th and 11th rounds were the only rounds where Canelo landed double digit punches. He was STILL outlanded in both rounds.
Canelo landed 117 punches vs. Mayweather.

I scored it 117-111 Bivol. I don't see how you give Canelo more than 4 rounds. 4 is being nice.

I thought Canelo would have a second gear if he couldn’t get to the body like he wanted. I thought that his stamina had gotten overall better, but I was wrong.

I also thought that there was no way Canelo would lose a decision in Vegas, but Bivol simply made it impossible for the judges to give it to him. Canelo was trying to land head hooks, but Bivol had his earmuffs up. He was tryna land body hooks, Bivol had the elbows down. Then he'd counter with a straight jab and stands Canelo back up. It was really amazing to see.

Canelo’s style (like not fighting style but strictly from round to round) reminds me a little of Wilder and Tank in some ways. Sure, he was the better boxer, but in previous fights, he has been too content giving up rounds because he knew he’d have the power to knock them out. What happens when you do that is, eventually you come up against a better boxer and you won’t be afforded that luxury.

Honestly, this was the best case scenario for him moving back up to 175. He could’ve caught someone that could’ve stopped him. Massive respect for him though. For as much flack as he gets about his opposition, he dared to be great. He did what we wanted to see all these other great fighters do.

I know he had been having diabetes issues, and iirc, had put off a surgery to be in Russell Jr.'s corner when he fought in February, but man ... that family has been through it. Two of his sons had died already, and now him. Hope the remaining sons find comfort and peace and remain close knit

In response to Reply # 0

And I for one, don't see the point.
Canelo dodged the fight for years.
GGG was robbed in fight 1, imo.
Canelo won fight 2, imo.
GGG is now 40 years old.

Canelo is near impossible to beat on the cards. You have to put on a Bivol type performance to do so (Bivol clearly won that fight convincingly but you wouldn't know that by looking at the scorecards). So likely the only way GGG can win this fight i by ko or tko. And if a 35 year old GGG couldn't do that... what are the chances a 40 year old version can?

Get your money G, and I'll watch the fight. But I think we all know the outcome.

It’s predictable, but Canelo could’ve taken worse “tune ups.” GGG is likely on his way out, and this was gonna be his best payday

That said … I’ll probably watch, but not super inclined to pay for that DAZN PPV bullshit in order to do so

I saw people get straight up trampeled, legs crushed, toes broken, it was insane. I went with my girl, my boy and his girl and we were running so fast when the POP POP went off, lol. It was a nearby car backfiring but the recent events in Texas and Buffalo had everyone on edge.

So many people limping out after the stampede and crying. Shoes everywhere, it was kind of surreal.

As for the fight, yea Rollies might have won every round but he is so undisciplined and aloof. Shit looked doofy at times, anyone who has watched boxing for a while knew that Tank was going to catch him flush at any moment.

The only fights left for Tank at 135 are Ryan Garcia or Teofimo Lopez.

Haney is busy for the next year (if he beats Kambozo)

Garcia is Golden Boy/DAZN
Haney is Top Rank (for now) and presumably tied up for the next year
Loma is literally fighting in a war (and is Top Rank otherwise)
Teo moved up and is Top Rank

If he stays at 135 and with PBC, he's kinda out of options (he really was before Rolly, but Mayweather sold it anyway). There are a few options at 140, but most of them are either Top Rank or low risk high reward

Also, if we're being honest, he's looked beatable in several rounds vs much of his recent opposition, but was able to get out of it with his power. I really have no idea where he goes from here unless he can somehow sign 1/2/3 fight deals with the other guys

In theory, I'd like to see Garcia beat Fortuna, then either fight Tank in the fall, or at least fight Rolly (I think that would be a fun fight) to build up the Tank fight this time next year, but ... boxing

Yes. He dominated the fight. The score was 8-4. I had it 7-5. Haney did
work wonderfully behind his jab, and he threw several combinations,
but he has zero power.

I just don’t see him having any success if he were to move up to WW. He better
stay at 135. Maybe he can do 140, but 147 and up?
I don’t think so.

People forget that Mayweather was a KO artist at lightweight/featherweight and worked more defensively when he moved up because he started having hand issues. But he was still highly prolific and entertaining.

Haney is just dull to me.

That’s 116-112. They gave him 4 rounds

I gave Kam the last round because he was more assertive, Haney
stayed away and had the fight in the bag. So I scored it 7-5 because of
that last round.

I gave Kam round 1, 6th, 9th,10th and the last round. He connected
with some power shots and was more assertive in the rounds that he won.

Haney clearly won the fight, and outboxed Kam, but Kam was never
hurt or stopped going forward and he was able to land some power shots.

He's beat everyone put in front of him. I agree his style isn't fan friendly, but otherwise what you are using to say you're not sold on him is unfair IMO. I mean if you compare any fighter to Floyd, in most cases they won't be good "Floyds." He's a good ass Devin Haney tho

Loma ducked him

Ryan Garcia and Teo RAN from him

Kambosos even ducked him too, until it was painfully obvious that he had no choice once the Ukrainian conflict started.

Tank wasnt interested in fighting in Australia (and honestly Haney should refuse to fight in Australia again, if they want a rematch, have it in Vegas, or better...NYC so I dont have to travel far)

I REALLY hope that rematch doesn't get made. With respect to Kambosos, he is who he is. He's gonna get outclassed vs Haney 10 fights outta 10

need to be made now. Floyd fought all the dangerous fighters before
moving up to WW...Corrales,Castillo,Corley

Davis vs Haney has to happen to define who the best lightweight fighter of the
world is.

Kam and Rolando are good, solid fighters, but there isn’t anything dangerous about
them.

Same thing goes for Stevenson.

Davis, Haney, Stevenson....at some point these guys have to start fighting
each other.

Beautiful

>Sounds like him and Shakur wanna unify

Yeah that was a pleasant surprise to see Shakur call him the best 130 lb fighter in the UK and say he wants the smoke.

>but idk if I see that happening because Top Rank/DAZN

The positive thing is they've worked together before to make the Jose Ramirez vs Maurice Hooker unification at 140, so it might not be out of the question.

Donaire sounds super confident, but the thing is somebody's gotta be wrong. I don't think that fight took too much out of him, I just think Inoue's a better fighter than him at this point

I could see him retiring if he doesn't win this tho. There are no other fights at 118 worth getting up for unless he'd want to unify vs Casimero (not sure if he even has that belt still)

In response to Reply # 34

Kyoguchi just travelled to Mexico to defend his title against a home favorite, Bermudez, and beat the hell out of that dude. Beautiful uppercuts that had Gabe Rosado fanboying out as one of the commentators of the broadcast.

These Japanese cats seem to be carving out an interesting style. The way Inoue finds openings is a thing of beauty. You can't slip for a fraction of a second against that guy. It takes otherworldly in-the-moment vision and reaction time. Kyoguchi was fighting similarly, and just decided to finally end Bermudez after the ref kept unfairly taking points. Bermudez wasn't very skilled, but he was a bigger guy, tough as nails.

These guys look amazing out there.

In response to Reply # 51

Taylor fought a TERRIBLE fight. However, I didn't think Catterall fought well either. He fought to survive. I really didn't think either of them deserved to win lol. Initially I agreed with everyone that Taylor lost, but when I rewatched, I think I was just very disappointed in his performance. Taylor was busier and Catterall landed a couple of good punches. Reminded me a lot of Shawn Porter vs Danny Garcia where Porter got the decision bc he was much busier while Danny was more accurate but not nearly active enough. Catterall did a lot of tying up to neutralize Taylor's sloppy work, but it wasn't a winning effort from either guy imo.

I didn't like how Taylor dismissed the idea of a rematch as if he clearly won. He did the same with the Prograis fight. His fans let him get away with it bc he's white honestly, whereas Mayweather used to just rematch close fights to shut everybody up.

In response to Reply # 0

"“Whether (the Serrano team) don’t think they can win the fight or whether they just want to get some confidence or, I don’t know, but they don’t want the rematch right now,” he said.

Hearn stated that he wanted to do the fight in front of 80,000 at Croke Park in Ireland, however, but Serrano’s team did not want to negotiate.

“Katie Taylor’s desperate for the rematch. She’s got the opportunity to do a huge fight in Ireland, and we wanted Amanda Serrano, because (the first fight) was just incredible. So we spoke to Most Valuable Promotions and they just said, ‘We don’t really want to go to Ireland, it’s not the money, you could offer us X and we wouldn’t take it,’” said Hearn

“It was surprising, because I thought Amanda felt like she won the fight and she could beat Katie Taylor, and they’d be turning down a huge amount of money. But they don’t even want to entertain the discussions.”"

Kept looking at the clock
Plodding his feet. He's bringing in all these trainers, why is he learning nothing?
He fought a(nother) senior citizen, and this one was there to be hit, and he just ... didn't
That fake tough shit after the fight was over ... where was that during the actual fight?

He owes all the PRs who were there an apology cause there was way better things they could've been doing last night

In response to Reply # 0
Sun Jun-19-22 11:02 AM by Boogie Stimuli

Friday 6/17:

-Yulihan Luna avenges a loss from 8 yrs ago via a beautiful outclassing of Jessica Gonzalez by UD. Luna has improved quite a bit. She's not afraid of a firefight and susceptible to aggression as she used to be. I enjoy watching her box now. I wanna see her unify with any other major title holder at bantamweight.

-Juan Huertas upsets Johnatan Cardoso by 1st round KO. I'm in a prediction league and all 50+ people picked Cardoso by KO. The was a HUGE upset.

-Melissa Oddessa Parker retains her IBO by UD vs the skilled and mobile Mikenna Tansley. Tansley is the best boxer I've ever seen who's started at 24. She's 30 now, and it's kinda unbelievable. You'd think she had an amateur background. Parker was ultimately too much, but Tansley troubles any bantamweight.

Saturaday 6/18:

-Robeisy Ramirez ICES Abraham Nova with a one punch KO in the 5th. Wow. Did not see that coming. Nova is a highly touted prospect. He was the bigger guy and is skilled. Dude even has a mascot lmao. Ramirez is obviously on a mission to prove that losing his debut was a fluke. With an extensive amateur background that included a win over Shakur Stevenson, he was expected to do big things. He's hungry.

-Artur Beterbiev is just a complete beast. Absolutely runs through Joe Smith Jr in 2 rounds in another championship fight, improving to 18-0(18 KO). This is kinda unheard of for a UNIFIED champion. Dude is stopping everybody, including other champions. Beterbiev vs Bivol is THE fight to made. Forget the Yarde fight and the Canelo rematch for now. The people have spoken. Give us undisputed!

-Gabriela Alaniz dishes out a sustained beating to Tamara Demarco for 6 rounds until Demarco's corner throws the towel in on the stool. This fight was of interest to me, because they both have some amateur experience, but Demarco was in her early 30s with much more pro experience. She's a good mover who'd had the experience of being stopped by a much larger, relentless fighter she couldn't escape, but she is really good at clinching to neutralize opponent's offense. She's also stopped other experienced fighters late. Alaniz is a young fighter with great accuracy (especially if she hurts you), great at avoiding the clinch, and is relentless (her alias is literally "La Chucky" lol). So... Alaniz drops Demarco TWICE in the first round and just beats her up for 5 more until it's stopped. Alaniz is a problem for anyone at Flyweight.

Demarco was the WBO champion. Alaniz beat the hell out of the champion like that. Brilliant stuff. It would be great to see her unify with WBA and WBC champion Marlen Esparza who fights under the Golden Boy banner.
Yudica, the IBF champion is a fellow countryman of Alaniz, but she's currently injured.

Joe Smith was introduced he came out to these flashing blue and white lights and cliche rock music with lots of guitar riffs

when Beterbiev came out, to his Chechnyan Russian folk music and DARK red lights, he got booed/cursed so hard lol. IT was literally some Ivan Drago vibes in MSG that night

it was HILARIOUS seeing all their long-ass faces after the 2nd round battering that Joe Smith took, some of them clearly bet ALOT on "The Common Man"....the stupidest fucking nickname ever bc that's all he is. A common-ass dude who boxes on the side. He was CLEARLY outclassed by Bivol and Beterbiev. Seems like a nice likable guy though, with a douchy fan base.

The MAGA crowd definitely loves a "regular Joe" ass white dude, so I'm not surprised. Your description of the crowd means the "The Common Man" alias did its job.

I remember when saying AJ was overrated would get you labeled a hater lol. I was never sold on the guy. Got a gift in the Olympics and was overrated for most of his career. People are finally seeing what the "haters" saw for so long.

I thought he could pull off a decision if he didn't stay in the pocket and trade, and not only did he not stay in the pocket, but he broke Sor Rungvisai's spirit in a way that I hadn't seen done before. He was just too quick and too good. Although he's young and moved up two weight classes, he seems to have had no problem settling into the weight. He could possibly run that division if he wanted to, but I get him leaving that to his brother

there was this beautiful pivot from Rodriguez at 1:31 in the third round that I probably watched back like 10 times. He was creating angles so beautfully throughout the fight. And that step back that set up the knock down? *chef's kiss*

In response to Reply # 0

Opetaia defeated Mairis Briedis in Australia for Briedis' IBF title. Briedis only previous defeated came at the hands of OLEKSANDR USYK. This was considered a HUGE upset (not to me tho, I actually put money on Opetaia. CH-CHING!)
Opetaia is a quick, sharp counter puncher with really good athleticism, especially for the Cruiserweight division. His athleticism was able to neutralize Briedis' experience and craftiness in many cases. The uppercut Opetaia landed in the 4th DAMN. Broke Briedis' nose and had him leaking the rest of the fight. By the 12, Opetaia couldn't close his mouth. His jaw was broken. Post fight, it was revealed that it had been broken since the 2nd round. The guy isn't just athletic but also has a helluva chin. He's a new force in the division.
-

Zolani Tete becomes champ AGAIN, this time at Super Bantamweight with a brutal 4th round stoppage of Jason Cunningham, who was on a really good streak. Tete's power has carried up in weight. I was actually happy for this dude. Way to redeem himself from the Casimero KO.
-

Issac Hardman delivers a KO of the Year candidate with his stoppage of Beau Hartas. What a punch. It's obvious why his alias is "The Headsplitter.
-

A woman I'd never heard of named Taylah Robertson fought on the Opetaia/Briedis undercard. 24 yr old who looks like she'll be a force in the Super Flyweight division. Looks to pick her shots very well.

In response to Reply # 0

This is MONUMENTAL.

Will be in the UK, all womens card.

10-year rivalry between Shields and Marshall. Both undefeated as professionals, Marshall got a points win in the amateurs over Claressa in London (Marshall's home crowd). That amateur win seems to be Marshall's crowning achievement, and building her professional career has revolved around it. However, she has evolved into a pro KO artist. Claressa calls her slow and says she's not the 17 yr old Claressa who lost to a 21 yr old Marshall. I cannot WAIT for this fight.

(only bc he would be a big underdog)

I dont think we'll ever get to see how great Tank truly is because he only fights cab drivers and substitute teachers and Gamboa, who has become a human victory cigar at this point. Floyd got him in protective custody and I DOUBT he ever fights anyone who would pose a threat .

But I get that Usyk's body needs to recover, and that Fury was apparently full of shit when he said he was retiring

To be real, I find it hard as a fan to "get up" for these predictable fights at this point. I'm on the fence about paying for Canelo/GGG (especially as a long time DAZN subscriber), but really wanna see Bam

Very excited for Shields/Marshall (although I think it's gonna be one sided" and Mayer/Baumgardner tho

What do you want to hear in a boxing podcast?

Feel free to be as specific as possible. A few things come to mind:
- Ideal length of time?
- What type of content do you want to hear?
- Is any adjacent content "allowed?" (i.e., quick takes on current news/football/basketball/music)
