"2022 Chicago Bulls Offseason Thread: What we knee’d"

Well, we definitely improved from last season. There is no doubt about that,
and there were some memorable moments and historic achievements to be
proud of. We were one of the best teams in the league for half a season ,
then the injury bug bit us, and everything plummeted after that.

I give the season a C+/ B-.

However, we are going into next season with a lot of question marks
and issues.

1. Lonzo Ball. He is injury prone. He has never played more than 62 games in
a season, and his knee injury has gotten worse, where he might need a second
surgical procedure. He has torn his meniscus twice already, and he is only 24.
We need a backup plan at the PG position if Lonzo is unable to get healthy.

2. Zach Lavine also has a knee injury where he will need surgery. It’s not something
that will heal by simply resting the knee. The type of knee injury he has is still
unknown, and the type of surgical procedure that is needed is unknown as well.
In my opinion, none of that matters, because I don’t think he should be given a
super max deal. He is a huge defensive liability, and now he is dealing with
a knee issue. That’s not something to be rewarded.

FA Shooting Guards: monk, dort, oladipo

3. Vucevic has to be traded. The bulls are terrible defensively, and most of it is
due to Vucevic’s inability to guard in the paint and protect the rim. He has a friendly
contract because it’s set to expire after next season, so we should be able to move
him and get a solid center in return.

FA centers: Robinson, Portis, Ayton, Nurkic, Bamba,

4. We need to improve our long distance shooting. When Derozan gets doubled,
that leaves a player unguarded, so we have to be able to hit shots in those moments.
Coby/Ball are probably our best 3pt shooters, but Coby faded down the stretch and
Ball isn’t dependable due to his health. So mgt. should definitely focus on acquiring
a few shooters in the offseason.

Those are the top 4 issues that the Bulls need to urgently address.

Post Script: Patrick Williams aka Baby Kawhi is almost ready. All he needs is one
more year of development. He was our best player in the POs.

That pretty much ends any conversation you and I have about LaVine.

1. Even fully healthy, I don't think the Bulls are better than the Bucks or the Celtics.
But I'm enjoying this much more than building and striking out through the draft every year.

2. I like Coby, but I think AK & ME should find out what they can get for him.
LaVine, Caruso, Ball and even Ayo make his position redundant.

3. Our ceiling depends on how good Pat Williams can get this offseason.
And supposedly DeRozan is making Williams work out with him this summer.

However, sacrifices need to made and I would be willing to move him
to improve our frontcourt. He still has a lot of upside, and he is offensively
talented. But we need urgent change defensively.

You like Lavine. I don’t, and this season showcased why he is a lability,
and has zero grit. He is a finesse player and he is highly skilled, but he
is too much of a nuisance defensively, and has a low BB IQ in crunch time.
He had to be told by Thompson to rebound and secure the ball. That is
not a Supermax player.

I’m willing to deal with Derozan as a defensive clown, but that’s it. The
rest of our starting lineup needs to be 2 way players.

I don’t have a love affair with players as a fan. I want the team to
improve, and I don’t think we can do that with Lavine.

Last offseason was a surprise. For them to bring all of these players was big. I don't think we should expect as much movement this year.

I do think we have to keep in mind that any player could and might be moved. I like and appreciate Lavine, DeMar, Lonzo and others but if AK & ME can get the right return to build a better team then I'm okay with any of them being moved. I would hope we can let Ayo and Pat develop so those are the only two I'm really hoping don't get moved.

If Pat is still the starter coming into next season (probably is) then I really hope he is ready to go come playoffs. He was great defensively but not so much on offense for most of the Bucks series. If he has the same results as the last two games in next year playoffs that would be great.

I definitely think 4/5 is the biggest need. If either Pat or Vuc sits it's instantly small ball. So even if Vuc is gone they need at least a third big man. Definitely agree about the shooting.

The four I do hope we keep are Lonzo, DeMar, Ayo and Pat. Lavine, Caruso and Vuc all have big positives but I think they at least need to explore what they can get for them. I wouldn't be mad at all three coming back.

The same team healthy with a better bench should do better and be fun to watch.

someone with size and defensive capabilities.

he should not be averaging 33 mpg next year. especially if he's going to continue to chuck up three's.

i'm fine with going into next season with the same team as long as we upgrade our front court depth.

80% of his 3s are wide open which debunks the myth that
he spaces the floor even if not hitting shots.

Basically, he's open and teams don't care.

As a Vucevic apologist, I'm hoping he won't start the season
in such a slump this fall.

seems like he would put up huge numbers every game he played against us dating back to the gasol years. and he did ALL of his work in the post and mid-range.

if old man vuc is just going to sit behind the three point line and shoot three's we're going to need an alternative. and/or billy is going to need to do a better job of coaching him.

But maybe that was more of an indictment of our interior defense than his ability in the post.

I do think he has the talent to be that guy but he shouldn't be shooting more than three times behind the line per game. Everything else should be low post or midrange on the kick out.

I'm with the suggestion of interior depth (our biggest weakness) and I'd suggest a big swing if one makes sense...but only then. I also think we need some perimeter 2 way depth.

Our improvement otherwise will have to come from our youth getting better. I think Pat is there defensively and would have made leaps this year offensively if not for the injury so we'll see about next yr. He has to stay on the court though.

Ayo was what I thought he'd be but he has to learn how to be a heavy minutes pro now. He was great as a sparkplug off the bench but when they plugged him into the starting lineup, he dulled a bit.

Players I'd like us to try to get:

Interior: Montrez Harrell/Mitchell Robinson/Bruno Fernando/JayMichael Green/Chris Boucher/Mo Bamba
2-way wings: Gary Payton II/Bruce Brown Jr./Markieff Morris/Austin Rivers/Trey Liles
Low Risk/Potential High reward targets: Anfernee Simons/Isaiah Roby/Bol Bol/Andre Drummond/Victor Oladipo

Big Swings I'd be ok with exploring: DeAndre Ayton, Bradley Beal, Donovan Mitchell, Damien Lillard (for mostly picks and a few young players...dude about to be 32 coming off a season ending ab injury, not mortgaging the team for him).

An offseason that brought in something like Harrell/Boucher/GPII/Bruce Brown Jr and maybe Simons or Roby (I'd be ok with Bol or Oladipo also) would probably move us to second round/conf finals potential if the young guns improve (and we stay healthy).

For the record...I don't see a move out there that makes us a contender without us changing the entire team make up to get said players. For now, we just have to focus on drafting well, development and good cap management so that when there is that type of move, we're ready.

being named sixth man of the year with the Clippers. He got exposed in
the bubble in that Denver series, and clipper players were mad
that Doc went with him over Zubak. So when Doc got the boot, he left
to join the Lakers.

And the only reason Lakers picked him up is because Lebron told them to.
Rich Paul was Harrell’s agent, and it was another stupid request by Lebron and
Rich Paul, because Harrell was getting almost zero tick with the Lakers by the
second half of the season.

Then he goes to Washington and gets into a physical fight with KCP...so he gets
shipped out to the Hornets.

I remember when y’all thought that team was going to be better than the Disney
Chip team.

I don’t want that dude anywhere near the Bulls. He can’t do anything on defense, and
he is an agitation.

YOU SAW IT.

Rudy is highly overrated, and he has 3 years left on a 205 million
dollar contract. That’s 40 million a year!

Rudy has been exposed, and he is a huge liability in the 4 quarter. He can’t
shoot, and he can’t make FTs. He is excellent when it comes to guarding
inside the paint, but he is an ineffective defender around the perimeter.
That was illustrated in the POs.

And you want to give up Patrick Williams for him? Patrick Williams’ ceiling is
Kawhi Leonard.

Mitchell Robinson would be a better piece. He is way younger. He is cheaper,
and he is a great rim protector and rebounder. The only issue with him is that
he is slightly injury prone, but that might be due to playing for Thibs. He is known
for running players into the ground.

Couple things:

1. Have you seen the defense that Donovan Mitchell plays?
Gobert WAS the entire defense.

2. We’ve had Caruso/Ball/Green doing all the hard work on defense.
Now put Gobert in the inside which allows Ball and Caruso
to do their own work exclusively at the point of entry.

>And you want to give up Patrick Williams for him? Patrick

THIS is typical Bulls talk. I blame Paxson.
We gotta stop falling in love with potential.

The Ball and LaVine health issues are enough to deal with.
I don't care how young a guy is, I'd rather not have to deal
with another injury prone player. But that's just me.

The center averaged 8.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game for the New York Knicks in 2021-22 and led the team with 8.5 win shares.

AK has already made one of the worst trades in Bulls history...If he does it again
with Rudy Gobert , he deserves to be fired. .It would be worse than Gar/Pax

That is the recent hot rumor, and if that’s the case, the Bulls
have sealed their fate of losing for the next 5 years.

AK was supposed to be different from the previous management of basketball
operations, but he is just as bad. He traded away Gafford and Carter for a center
who has been absolute trash defensively, and our defensive rating is worse than
what it was prior to the trade.

2019-20 we were ranked in 9th place. We are now 23rd in the league.
We went from top 10 to shit in one year.

And now it appears they are going to re-up LaVine,
who is a defensive dummy, which means the Bulls are going to
be defensively dumb next year.

We are going to put the same dumb ass team on the floor next year.....
Save us Patrick Williams. You are our only hope. He is going to have to
accelerate his growth.

in case Ball doesn’t come back until midway through next
season?

This is highly disappointing, and going the cheap route to get a big man
is even more disappointing. Bulls had an opportunity to get Mo Bama,
but didn’t want to meet his asking price.

I love the draft pick, but so far FA has been subpar.
