Michigan is down 14 or so. Howard’s starters are still in, but Wisconsin has gone to the walk-ons. Michigan runs a full court press against the Wisconsin walk-ons, so Gard calls time out to bail them out before the turnover. Howard objected to a timeout being called that late in the game. Even though he was throwing a press at them, lol.

telling the other coach not to take it easy on you. if they beat the press and get a bucket in transition, that's on you for doing that.

and what was dude supposed to do, let michigan's starters get three or four buckets on his walk-ons?
that's not a thing to get mad over.

shit. as a coach, i been in that situation many times (winning and losing).

i might get teed up over the safety of my players. i'm not messing up my rep over something dumb like this.

peace & blessings,

x.

as mentioned below, michigan's SID needed to keep his away from that post game presser.

you can't represent the university in that emotional state.

and by showing zero remorse in the presser you really bury yourself in terms of attempting to do a the required apology tour in order to keep your job.

Juwan Howard has not apologized for anything that happened. Said he was upset about Wisconsin calling a timeout late in the game. He expressed that frustration to Greg Gard. Howard said Gard touched him during the postgame line and he felt the need to defend himself. #Michigan

Howard said it was unfortunate that some of the players also threw punches. He admired them for backing each other up but didn’t want it to go that way. Howard’s presser is over. He did not apologize for his actions. #Michigan

The melee was bad. But…. What if Juwan was pressing to reach the Over? (Note, final second layup reached the Over)

I want to open an investigation into a college basketball #gambling conspiracy theory involving Juwan Howard. Perhaps there was more to the postgame festivities.

If you want the game to be over, then stop pressing and let them run out the clock

If you want to “play to the final second”, then don’t get mad when the other guy does it too.

You don’t get to have it both ways. Such a stupid thing to be mad about.

In response to Reply # 24

I don’t really care about the altercation. The build up to the altercation shouldn’t have been a build up. Just coach your team and don’t worry about what the other guy is doing.

And yeah, putting his hands on him so he could make his stupid point, was stupid and unnecessary too.

Only response to Juwan’s “I’ll remember that”, should’ve been along the lines of “so what?, and keep walking.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

the job has gotten infinitely tougher whether anyone wants so say it out loud or not. That's why you have a lot of the older coaches retiring and the younger coaches with NBA backgrounds might be looking to catch on with a pro staff. Unlike the NFL the NBA seems to have broke through its glass ceiling as far as hiring black coaches so the opportunities over there may be better for those guys?

other things have diluted the game (break up of the legendary Big East, conference realignment, rivalries dying out as a result etc) , legendary coaches retiring etc, Covid killing march madness in 2020

they gotta do something to generate interest again.

35 seconds of a shot clock is just grotesque.

two halves? switch to quarters .

lol until 2007 high school and college 3 point line was the same distance, now college is a foot further back but still not nba range.

it's childish now

edit, get rid of all these variations

In an alternate universe where things make sense geographically and greed doesn’t rule everything, that group plus Penn State and maybe UConn if their football could’ve made it, is a solid basketball/football conference.

I hate the fact that teams like Maryland are now in Big 10 (what is it called B1G now?). Indiana/MD games just feel like so much BS

>that shit is weird

Big 10 officials wanted a footprint in the NorthEast, and especially he NJ NYC market, and the academic / research prestige of a large State school like Rutgers was appealing to the Big 10 which is full of those GIANT Land Grand schools that span acres

I'm actually glad for that move bc it allows me to watch Ohio State play 30 miles away, bc I'm never going back to Ohio lol

I heard his post game presser this morning so I admittedly don’t know if Juwan has spoken since…but he did not really take on a conciliatory tone last night after the game. That’s a big important school and a big important program. You just have to be better in that spot. Sad for him and really Sad for his kids.

..Howard was well within his rights to smack the shit out of Gard when he refused to allow him to simply pass during the handshake line after the game ended. Gard was the instigator and had no right to impede the progress of someone that clearly held no desire to speak with him. There are press conferences after every game. Save the talk for that and keep it moving. The fact that he was only fined for unsportsmanlike conduct shows that the league clearly saw no issue with him putting hands on another adult to impose his will.

That said, I understand the Howard fine/suspension. As a head coach, you simply can't lose your cool like that while representing a University and set a bad example for the student athletes in his charge.

..which is exactly what happened.

no need to exaggerate.

Words were exchanged, but words and actions are 2 distinctly different things. You can say whatever you want and still keep it moving at the same time, without touching anyone. Grabbing another adult by the arm when they're upset with you is never a good idea.

It was clear Howard was upset. It was also clear that Gard was hell-bent on proving a point. Regardless, Gard was wrong for grabbing Howard by the arm when he initially refused to shake his hand or stop to listen.

Bottom line: Keep your hands to yourself at all times.

That said, Howard was well within his right to smack the shit out of Gard the moment he grabbed his arm. I don't give a damn what was said, the minute you put your hands on another adult, all bets are off.

so I'm not sure where I exaggerated.

and you said howard had no desire to speak with him when that was clearly not true either.

As I said, I think Gard was a little bit too handsy but there's a pretty big difference between touching a strangers arm on the subway vs two professional colleagues in a *handshake line*. Context is important here.

It's hard to imagine thinking that Gard deserved to get pummeled for his actions or that it would be justified. That would've been a catastrophically bad outcome on a multitude of levels.

even though they played clips of him in the post game presser straight up lying.

https://twitter.com/Evan_Flood/status/1495499434884571138

dude tried to say he was just moseying down the handshake line peacefully and juwan came up to him aggressively and pulled his mask down to bark at him while poking him in the chest.

but juwan was clearly looking to ignore him and blow right by him before gard grabbed his arm like he was a college player.

i thought about the audacity you gotta have to lie about this shit when it is *on video*. but then i see how the media pretty much ignored the lying and dude wont even pay any penalty in the court of public opinion. journalists on the scene didnt even press him on his false version of the events either. so might as well lie when you come under fire i guess. theres really no risk in it.

when fists or smacks are thrown.

If the altercation ended with out punches being thrown, it should be a different conversation.

The most unnecessary and over the top action was juwan's punchslap so that's where the majority of the conversation is going to be focused.

To fine and suspend the most egregious of that encounter makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is to blatantly ignore the instigator. None of the actions taken at the close of that game were cool or respectful. Both coaches took actions that were out of line. Gard, however was only fined for unsportsmanlike conduct (apparently for the timeout, not the confrontation), and certainly deserves at least a 1 game suspension for his actions following the game.

Again, there was no need for anyone in that scenario to put hands on another adult. Gard was wrong to confront Howard in that manner and to ignore that is completely irresponsible and sets a terrible example for his players.

if he passed Juwan alone in the back hallway of the arena or on the street he is not going to grab him by the arm like that to tell him anything.

But when you're on national tv with your entire team and coaching staff behind you, you decide to grab him by the arm and teach him about a rule that you feel he doesn't understand and show him up on national tv after you've beaten his team by 15 points.

Yes Juwan could've definitely responded differently but in the emotions of the moment its understandable and Gard should've understood that too and after seeing that the confrontation was going south could've gotten his coaching staff and team under control and reached out to Juwan later if he really wanted to talk to him. I feel like its not being talked about enough that the situation was almost over then the assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft aggressively and unnecessarily inserted himself into the situation and words were exchanged and things escalated.

I don’t think he should be suspended for the Big 10 tournament though

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

he'll be ok (I think), he just needs to smoke something before games and relax. It's legal in michigan now. This is very unlike him, dude is so laid back and smiley all the time normally.

the expectations go up immensely.

Haven’t followed Michigan this year but they seem to be a bit disappointing based on expectations.

>I saw the play, the kid pushed him twice," Jim Boeheim said. "I think it was inadvertent. It wasn't much of a punch."

bc what happened is the exact opposite of the above.

Of course the Juwan thing was a bigger deal. Incidents happen all the time during the heat of the game. Buddy got suspended as he deserved. Buddy and FSU player were cool after the game, btw. Terrible comparison, lol.

id like to think that the ncaaa would hold a college coach's actions after a game to a different standard than a college player's actions during the game.
