"2021-22 NBA Regular Season: Week 16"
Mon Jan-31-22 03:59 PM by allStah

Cade Cunningham won ROY against Mobley yesterday. It’s over. All other rookies
are on the side of the road in comparison to Cade. This rookie class
is solid, but Cee Cee is straight Galactus.

I had no idea his game possessed triple/double ability. He was a stud at OSU, but
he would mostly go for his shot, and wasn’t really facilitating.
And his defensive ability is insane. They highlighted one possession, where he
guarded 4 players within 8 seconds.

He is going to be Mr.Everything every night.

The Lakers assets are THT, Nunn, and a 2025 and 2027 FRPs. The picks are probably more valuable than it seems on paper given that's the post Bron/AD era (AD's contract is up in 2025)...but that's still trash to expect something good. I truly expect no moves, but I guess it's possible that we see them try to 2018 Cavs it and move the whole damn team. Who knows.

Seems Philly is staying pat - or at least that Simmons isn't being moved.

The rumor is that Boston is going to move Schroeder. I kinda understand why - he's probably gone after this year anyway.

Clippers are rumored to be very active in the trade market. They certainly have a lot of moveable contracts - Reggie Jackson, Zubac, Batum, etc.

I guess it's possible we see a huge trade, but I don't see anything monumental happening when we've got Harden, Simmons, and Dame potentially in play in the offseason.

but my fears have been put to rest. It's so fun watching him operate every night. He reminds me SO much of Grant Hill.

I hope we can surround him with the right pieces in the years to come.

now.

He is still defensively trash, and still can’t effectively deal with ball
pressure. Jerry didn’t pay Jimmy the max, and he was worthy
of it.

Lavine is not worth Giannis money, He is clearly a tier
below that.

Read off Lavine’s stats for his first three years in the league,
and what were his stats in his first season with the Bulls?

Put those stats next to Coby’s stats who is now in his third season.

And who did we trade to bring in Lavine?

And who owns the Bulls?

Do the math, and the answer is right in front of you.

NO MAX FOR LAVINE.

Jerry doesn’t super max players, and we have a player
who has a scorer’s mentality, and he has similar numbers to Lavine’s
first three seasons in the NBA.

He's genuinely an all-defense player this season, and he's a massive reason the Cavs went from a joke to a Top 4 seed. And if he hits his ceiling, he's a multi-year All-Star dude.

I'd still rather have Cade going forward, and all the people who panicked on Cade in the first month are... learning why you don't judge rookies on their first month (or first season at all, really), lol. He's just the complete superstar package. Was that way in high school, is that way today, will be that way.

Certainly never projects to be a "good" shooter in his current form. It's not like he's an 85% FT guy and his 3s just haven't caught up yet. If he starts shooting firmly in the 80s from the charity stripe, I'll feel a lot better about his chances of figuring out how to be a definitively good shooter from distance.

That said, to your point, at age 22, he's Top 10 in PER, Top 10 in offensive +/-, Top 20 in offensive win shares. Even if he never really becomes a shooter, his efficiency on offense will absolutely continue to improve, and he's an All-Star even with 35~% 3PT and 75~% FT shooting. If he can develop any kind of shooting, it's really just the cherry on top.

If people want to criticize Ja's game, I think the majority of that criticism should definitely come on the defensive end. He's a bad defender.

LeBron career average is 73% and it hasn't really seemed to hold him back. Ja is shooting 35% from 3, again, right around LeBron's career average. I guess the kid has truly arrived with folks trying nitpick on him with stuff like this. He's already the greatest point guard in Memphis Grizzlies history.

15. "He is already the greatest PG in Memphis’ history?"
In response to Reply # 13
Tue Feb-01-22 09:46 AM by allStah

And how did you come to that conclusion?

He has been in the league for only 3 years, and has only one playoff
appearance. He has no all nba or all defense honors, and he made
his first allStar team this season.

1st season: 17/7
2nd season: 19/7
This season: 26/6

With Memphis, Mike Conley had 2 seasons where he avg 17/6
and 2 seasons where he averaged 20/6. He went to 3 Western Conference
Semifinals and 1 Western Conference Finals. He played 12 seasons in Memphis,
earning 1 all defense team honor.

Is he more talented than Mike? Yes

But he has yet to accomplish what Mike accomplished as the PG
for Memphis. He has more work to do.

>LeBron career average is 73% and it hasn't really seemed to
>hold him back. Ja is shooting 35% from 3, again, right around
>LeBron's career average.

No one's ever called LeBron a truly good shooter. He's always been around the NBA average. He's made big shots where they count, but "being a good shooter" is not his game. He just happens to be one of the best in the world at, y'know, literally everything else, lol.

And I didn't say it has to be Ja's game either. I was just pointing out he's never really been known as a good shooter his whole career, so if people want to wonder if he'll ever become one, I think that's fair. I also think it's fair, to your point, to wonder if he needs to be an above-average shooter with so many other awesome tools in his kit.

(Also worth noting that comparing Ja to Bron isn't exactly fair, because he's easily better close to the rim than Ja is, due to his absurd size/speed for his size, but the overall point that "you can be a superstar with fairly average shooting if you're great at everything else" is fair enough, I think, especially at Ja's young age.)

I guess the kid has truly arrived
>with folks trying nitpick on him with stuff like this. He's
>already the greatest point guard in Memphis Grizzlies
>history.

I don't think it's nitpicking to point out that Ja is an NBA-average shooter and hasn't shown any signs in HS, college, or the NBA that he's going to be a truly good shooter. Again, I said several times he can be a massive star without it. I just don't think we should assume his shooting will definitely improve, because, again, the signs just haven't been there.

He's a league average 3 point shooter. I'd qualify a "good shooter" as someone who is above the average.

(Also, fwiw, 34.9% is the lowest the average has been in a decade, so I expect it to go up a bit before the end of the year. Normally the league average for 3P% is between 35 and 37 percent.)

He takes too many shots, and his shooting can be woeful at times,

I believe those are fair criticisms of his game.

The Pistons game was just bullshit.

The Pelicans rematch was again without Garland and Herb Davis being the Pelicans best player. No Temple going off from 3.

Reminders that Rubio was so much to this team was in the air. Still, some great performances from Lamar Stevens aka "alt-Okoro", Brandon Goodwin aka "Diet Collin Sexton", Kevin Love, and "Point Cedi" had 12 assists (despite only scoring 7).

Mobley only had 4 points but some good defensive sequences. Isaac Okoro came through with a couple 3s. He needs to get more comfortable with step back jumpers the way his alter-ego (Lamar) does.

Yes, you read all of this, and the Cavs still won a 93-90 contest.

Get well soon, Darius.

Hopefully the Cavs find another creator that can play alongside Garland.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

WHAT? No, this isn't some entitled old white man.

This is a legend of the game AND a Laker legend, architect of two dynasties. He drafted Kobe. He's as iconic as any sports figure can possibly get, not just to the league, but to this franchise.

Those tickets were promised to him by Dr. Buss, and they reneged.

Moreover, part of his issue is the way that it was done. Just a cold text as though he were nobody.

One of the things that the Lakers have prided themselves on- to the point of detriment, frankly- is taking care of their own, of the Lakers "family".

So yes, this is a serious slap in the face to someone who should be treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Taking them back was fucked up, but to do that shit via text was even worse.

There's nothing entitled about this. He has every right to feel this way.

Jeanie has done a solid job so far, with the lone exception of empowering the Rambi- kudos for that one- the way she has. They have way too much influence, relative to Kurt's actual acumen.

And I agree that that's a huge negative mark on her.

Someone recommended a gofundme to get McHale to come clothesline him, and I'd contribute to that shit in a heartbeat.

Is that big news locally among Lakers fans or is this an issue that is fairly generational in the sense that old school Lakers fans will care but the younger ones or ones that are LeBron bandwagoners don't care that deeply?

No idea if it's big locally or not - I just saw Jerry West trending on Twitter for some reason and I clicked.

I know people shit on Laker fans for not being bandwagon, which has been weird to me for some time, but any actual Laker fan should be looking at the FO sideways for this (and...all the other things).

For as much as Jeanie is likable, some 'questionable' situations are under her watch.

It's unclear what to make of Magic to the Rambii to the recent FO decisions to this outcome with Jerry.

I sincerely hope Jeanie wasn't aware of what happened. If so, then I'm concerned that whatever luster there is to the Lakers is eroding.

Without Mobley's impact on defense the Cavs are chasing a play-in spot this season if they're lucky. The Cavs won 22 games last season and are 11 games over .500 with a lot of basketball to go.

Mobley scored 4 points yesterday and still affected the bottom line of that team. And he's still got a ways to go.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I mean - ROY never means they’re going to be the better player, obviously. But Mobley has played more, played better out of the gate, and has been one of the top 2 factors in the Cavs completely turning around. It’ll take a LOT for Cade to beat him in ROY.

Cade has all rookies by a mile.

https://hashtagbasketball.com/nba-rookie-rankings

And there is a whole second half of the season to play,

Cunningham is great on both sides of the ball, where as Mobley is
just great defensively. His offense game is extremely raw. Cade has the ability
to effect the game more because of his usage rate and he is the main ball
handler.

Cade can get you points, defensive stops, and facilitation.....

He is overall the better player...and is the best rookie of the class

Their actions and treatment towards Jerry West are disgraceful and
unacceptable.

When he wanted to come back to the lakers organization after his consultant
job came to an end with the Warriors, they declined. He then gets hired by the
Clippers, and brings in PG and Kawhi, and after that, the Lakers fired his son from his
scouting position.

Now, they decided to rescind his lifetime season tickets, and they did it by informing
his via cellphone.

He is the emblem of the NBA and is one of the greatest lakers of all time.

LMAO

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33195375/ja-morant-memphis-grizzlies-arrived-everyone-hearing-it

As the Grizzlies' lead swells to 17 early in the third quarter of the Jan. 9 game, the Lakers call timeout and Morant makes a detour to reply to a front-row fan who taunted him after a turnover the previous possession, several of his teammates strut and celebrate on the Crypto.com Arena court.

But all this Grizzlies fun is too much for LeBron James, who didn't make it past the free throw line in the backcourt during Memphis' latest highlight.

A minute later, a Lakers turnover leads to another fast break for the Grizzlies. Bane swishes a trailer 3 -- wide open because James is slow getting back in transition -- and lets the all-time great know about it:

"Them footsteps ain't scaring nobody."

He was a two way player, and even with more discipline on offense, the way he spelled Darius and moved that ball... that's not gonna be replaceable. Next to Mobley and Garland, he was one of the MAJOR reasons for that soaring start to the season.

Darius Garland is certified. When he doesn't play, this team looks like the Cavs without LeBron. Damn shame he's too old to be the Rising Star and in a crowded field of NBA All-Star Guards in the East.

Evan Mobley and Kevin Love almost dug the Cavs out of a hole against the Rockets, but this team needs shooters on the wing. A guy who can come in and slide into the Lauri/Cedi/Wade spot.

I'll be glad next season, hopefully Collin Sexton can be one of them. But the Cavs need more two way players. The passivity of everyone who gets the ball on the perimeter who's not named Kevin Love is a problem.

I think Dylan Windler is gonna get traded in any upcoming deals. He, Pangos, and maybe Ed Davis (who is the emergency big).

Didn't love the officiating of that game either. Lamar Stevens was in for 5 minutes and had 3 fouls in the first. Every Cavalier that could help was stuck in foul hell at the half.

This team also seriously needs to find its free throws. Damn near the whole team is Shaq from the line.

Gotta remind myself this is a found money season, and in a time where the Bulls, Grizzlies and a couple other teams are further along in development... the Cavs still fly under the radar.

I don't think a trade for Eric Gordon or Caris Levert is the one. The guys I want to see (possibly realistically) to the Cavs are Josh Richardson (Celtics), Derrick White (Spurs), Terrence Ross, someone like that. A LOT of teams will be selling. The Cavs have now 2 disabled player exceptions that they can use.

Maybe "Cov-bro" or Norman Powell (would be LOL given his history against the Cavs as a Raptor) from Portland.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

harden is out. you know the nets wanna get rid of kyries crazy tail self. kd? does he wanna stay there for whatever rebuild/restructure plans they got?

they really went out and got arguably the 3 most volatile stars in the league and the only thing they have to show for it is a great playoff game from kd where he didnt know how close his feet were to the 3 point line.

it should be the last head coaching stop for steve nash too. that nigga needs to go hold a clipboard for somebody for a while.

KD is clearly injury prone, it is what it is. You're probably only gonna get him for 65 games a year max from now on

Kyrie , I just have no words for him anymore. He was smiling and laughing and "joking" with some teammates who were forcing grins and hoping the camera wasnt on them, it was so funny

Harden is MISERABLE in NYC. It's not for everyone. Brooklyn can pay him more than anyone else , w that supermax extension, but he turned down 100 M from houston tax free just to get out and be happy. Money isnt everything with him, I definitely see a sign and trade this offseason.

this experiment is turning out worse than the Joe Johnson Kevin Garnett Paul Pierce big 3

In response to Reply # 83

Kyrie - sure.

KD - he's a crumudgen I guess, but dude was having an MVP level season before the injury and has single handedly ruined the expectations for players coming of an Achilles tear.

Harden - despite some injuries, he's always showed up and played.

He is a straight hooper, and it’s hard for him to stay the course when the team
starts losing. We saw it in the second season with Chris Paul, and we saw it
in the second season with Russell Westbrook.Houston was willing to pay him
50 mil, but he wanted out ASAP.

If Brooklyn continues to lose, and Kyrie continues to sit out during home games,
eventually Harden will request to be traded.

Dude played in the playoffs with a 2nd degree hamstring tear, no way will
he continue to put up with this situation.

and was really dominant down the stretch, it was almost like someone showed him his ID and reminded him who he was. I did see Carmelo keeping him hyped. I think we may need that, we don't really have that constant "rah, rah" in your face "these mf's can't hold you" dude on this team. Bron does it more subtlety and Russ has been dealing with his own demons. Hopefully Melo can be that guy for us.

He didn’t double properly. Reaves cut-off the baseline, forcing Jackson
to spin to the help or another defender. But Westbrook didn’t close the opening
as he was doubling.

..as you already stated, Reaves correctly cut off the baseline. Westbrook's initial reaction on Jackson's drive was late, but he recovered. Jackson simply made the better play to spin and split the trap (he did that twice in the final qtr).

Vogel doesn't appear to know how to get much more out of this roster. This season might be the worst defensive effort (collectively) I've seen from the Lakers in quite some time. They were fortunate to have a shot at winning this game (mostly 'cause most of the Clippers went cold from the perimeter in the 4th). Like I said, no excuses.

If Dubs get all the way healthy it's gonna probably be a fail if they don't win the title even taking into account how good the Suns are.

Because, now they have talent where even if Steph and/or Klay isn't on, they can still score the ball with Wiggins, Porter and the development of Poole and Lee.

and man, Kuminga is a god-send for them cuz he can do a LOT of different things but he's also unlike anyone else on the roster so he doesn't step on anything that the other guys do.

Even if your athleticism isn't back at 100%, that jumper should return to the all-time-great shooting level it's been on in the past. Or, if not all-time great, at least great by current shooting standards.

Steph and Klay, when on, are unbeatable. They just are.

5 of these games are against elite competition (GS twice, Utah, Milwaukee etc...) and the other 5 are against mid-tier teams who have largely beat the Lakers this year.

If they squander these games and go 2-8 or 3-7 - they might be out of the play-in picture altogether.

Lakers have had zero continuity this year. Beyond frustrating to never see their key players actually on the floor at the same time.

If LeBron's injury turns out to keep him out for the next 5-10 games - Lakers might get stuck in that hole and never climb out.

Bron's injury seems to be nagging and ambiguous...that's not good.

AD is back and beasting but the team is still losing to scrubs...that's not good.

No consistency or continuity...that's not good.

We're about to play against teams with sharpshooting guards and great defense...that's not good.

What I'm saying is...it's not good.

They were getting torched and looked absolutely lethargic on defense until the second half, when they erased like a 25-point lead in 8 minutes lol -- wtf?

In that 3rd quarter, I felt like it was the first time all-year when the Laker core was actually on the court together playing with chemistry -- and then they blow like a 12 point lead in the 4th to bring it to OT.

Lakers are like 6-1 in OT games this year -- and I feel like I've seen about a dozen of their wins that have been like tonight -- ridiculous ups & downs and epic collapse late in the 4th to squander the lead.

THT just ain't right - and really hasn't been all year
Russ another standard 1-10 night from the field lol
LeBron with a 30-pt triple double -- year 19 madness continues
Monk is JR Smith on steroids
AD has put together consecutive big games -- great sign for him
Ariza is shot but played big minutes/finally hit some big shots. He's getting too much burn tho IMO. I'd rather have 'Melo in (obviously injured tonight) or go smaller if Nunn ever actually heals.

Team is so weird.

..after giving up damn-near 50 in the 1st qtr, watching the Lakers battle to get back into this game was definitely a treat.

Bron, AD, & Westbrook on the floor together and it was Monk who got hot in the 2nd half. If this team ever gets into decent rhythm with consistent defense... lookout. *Reaves is clearly working to solidify his place on this team .

*ABC showed quite a bit more from Vogel mic'd up and shed a bit of light on a few things. He clearly knows how to defend the opponents best players, but for whatever reason, the Lakers don't always respond to his adjustments/instructions. I know Vogel is seen as a "player's coach" with patience, but this team could use a bit more fire from him at times to wake them up when things start getting sluggish.

Kudos to the Knicks for continuing to fight, after giving up a huge lead. Barrett & Randle were almost too much for the Lakers tonight.

I don't think we're gonna get this one today.
Even with DeRozan approaching 40 at the start of the 4Q.
We're losing all the minutes with Embid on the bench. That can't happen.

But, fully healthy I think we could beat the Sixers in a series.
Our games against the Sixers have all been close.

Harden sat out w hamstring tightness …not sure if he’s just saving himself for the 2nd of the season or he doesn’t want to get hurt before a trade is imminent

Just a reminder that Ty Le was available when Sean Marks chose Steve Nash to be captain of this titanic disaster

The shooters on this team can’t shoot and the defenders can’t defend

I’ve never seen an implosion like this ,

- You lose Harris to a serious ankle injury.

- KD is now injury prone, so he isn’t available.

- Kyrie is a part time player

- And Harden is working like a slave night in and night out.

This is on management for gutting the team to build a big three, and
and not having a plan B or Plan C or really building a balanced team that
would still be able to compete regardless of players getting injured.

The team has to depend on rookie players and washed up journeymen to
be able to contribute and help out the big 3, and since two of the big three
are not consistently available, it’s all on Harden to work with those players.

That’s not an ideal situation for any coach.

That little stint he had w the warriors was not enough, he shoulda cut his coaching teeth on the Orlando Magic or some other cellar dweller but he wouldn’t get those jobs bc Sean Marks isn’t the GM there

He got this job bc of Durant and being teammates w Marks in Phoenix

you lose your best player, you gonna struggle...add on losing a 2nd or 3rd best player too. Whether its a big 3 or big 2 or big 1.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

and 6 rotation guys have been out of the lineup in the last few weeks.

Harden
Ky
Durant
Claxton
Aldridge
Harris

Their issue isn't that they don't have a bench. They actually have a solid bench. But their bench is starting and they've had to fill the bench minutes on the fly.

That being said, they still should be able to steal a win or two here and there with some um, coaching.

Joe Harris is not good .

Taurean Prince and Landry Shamet played good defense and now that they’re gone it’s painful to watch the Nets try to defend . They can’t guard anyone and none of the big 3 were known for that either

..when the Nets are having the same issues.

Durant will likely be injury prone for the rest of his career. Harden appears to be battered and bruised and slowing down.

Same things said about AD & Bron every week, even though they're still playing at an elite level (when available).

The sad thing is that we may never get to see these two teams play against each other in a series.

but i'd view the lakers situation differently - russ clearly don't fit and is looking lost.

If those teams were in the playoffs and 100% healthy, more would be expected from the Nets

Watched the Cavs put an all-time horrible effort in the first quarter of a game they BLEW AWAY in the 4th.

I don't care what you say, Rajon Rondo is still GOATed, he engineered a 19-0 run that had Kevin Love and Cedi Osman going OFF. Allen, Mobley, Wade killed it on defense tonight. Kevin Love was also good on defense... LMAO

And Caris Levert is coming to the team soon.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.
