"2021-22 NBA Regular Season: Week 12"
Mon Jan-03-22 06:51 PM by allStah

De’Marvelous , as in Derozan, is on absolute fire right now, and would get my vote
as MVP if the voting were to take place today. Curry and Durant have cooled off
a bit, due to their teams being hit with Covid. And Harden is carrying the
Nets as of late. Plus the Bulls were the first team to really get hit hard with Covid,
but they still continued to perform at a high level.

Derozan is the best 4th quarter player in the league ( stats don’t lie), and he hit two last second game winning shots on consecutive days, and is the only player player in NBA history to achieve such a feat. Plus the Bulls are in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls are built for the present and the future, but our interior defense is still
horrid, and we are given up too many points. Winning games with last second shots
will not get us far in the POs. That’s my only gripe. We have to fix our interior defense
or it will bite us in the ass in the post season. We are getting killed on the glass,
and we are giving up way too many points in the paint.

and you’re focused on Lavine. Go hang out with Vex with all that
fan of a player type stuff.

You sure you’re a true bulls fan?

If the Bulls don’t offer him a max, I’m not sure what you’re going to do.

Your approach is becoming corny.

Your post reads like he's talking about an opposing player from a hated rival.

But nope, you, being you, threw a tantrum because he had the audacity to praise a player on your own team.

7. "We are constructed for a deep PO, but a championship?"
In response to Reply # 6

Our interior defense is too weak. We are exactly like like Billy’s Chris Paul
OKC team. That team was a beast in the 4 quarter, and had a hand full
of closers. The starting lineup was focking ranked top 5 in clutch points.
It was a guard heavy system, but soft in the interior, and it hurt them in the POs.
Galinari makes Vuecvic look like Alonzo Mourning.

This team is almost exactly like that, and the interior needs to be upgraded
in order to truly compete for a championship.

This is why I’m against maxing Lavine. I don’t put him on that Giannis
level, and it would hurt our payroll tremendously where they wouldn’t be
able to make any big moves in the near future.

Patrick William is going to be a stud for us, and Coby White is turning into
a prolific player before our very eyes. We are not going to have room for everyone,
and I would rather have a true prolific all around big.

The Christian Wood situation is going to be very interesting. He seems to be on the
out with Houston. I would rather have both Wood and Levert over giving Lavine
a super max....or something similar.

Now if Lavine comes and is willing to take something lesser, than I’m all for it.
But we all know he wants top 5-10 money.

On a lot of the Bulls podcasts I listen to, before Coby White started playing well these last few games,
the talk was around using both him and Patrick Williams to land another wing before the trade deadline (Harrison Barnes was a popular name).
I'm not sure where I stand on that as of yet.

I really want to see the Bulls force teams to choose between LaVine and DeRozan.
I still think the offense revolves around your turn, my turn iso ball.
Or maybe I'm missing the minutiae of what Donovan is doing.

The Grant rumor doesn’t make sense, because he left Denver, a contender at the
time, to be the main option in Detroit. I doubt he would be interested in going
to Chicago to become the fourth option. Plus he has zero upside compared
to Williams and White, pieces we would have to give up to get him.

I don’t like Barnes either because he is 29, and isn’t known for his defense,
and he isn’t a player that we need. He is known for his offense, and we have
plenty of offense.

We simply need a big. That’s all. Williams and White are way more valuable with
all star upside, and possibly superstar upside with Williams. They are present and future
pieces.

Let’s not be the White Sox here, who went all in last season by trading Nick Madrigal
for pitching that they didn’t need, and to chase a World Series that they weren’t ready for. Nick Madrigal is a young stud, with the ability to hit every pitch, and was a main
cog in the offense. He tore his hamstring, putting him out for the season. Instead of
the White Sox being patient, they made a desperate move and messed up the second
half of their season. They sucked in the second half and were bounced early in POs
Now they have a hole at second base, and don’t look destined to get to the World Series in the future.

Don’t do the same thing with Patrick Williams...Hopefully, Jerry learned from his white
Sox mistake. We saw what happened when they they got desperate last year
around the trade deadline. We immediately sucked after the trades were made.

We are in an excellent position right now, and we have the pieces for the present and the future. We simply need a solid big, and that can be done by moving draft picks
and a few fringe players.

Pulled this from @mkhoops:

"Are you expecting Patrick Williams to ultimately develop
into a player who is better, similarly tiered, or worse than
guys like Jerami Grant or Harrison Barnes?

I ask for obvious reasons, but to me, I think he’ll end up
being a similarly tiered role guy like Barnes and Grant,
which is why I’m all for trading him now if you can get the
finished version of him now."

... is if you think Grant or Barnes makes the Bulls a true title contender. If you think one of those guys gives the Bulls a real shot against the Warriors, the Suns, the healthy Bucks, the complete Nets? Then yeah, you pull the trigger and deal Williams. I'm just skeptical that either does that... in which case, keeping the Williams lottery ticket-- or saving that ticket for a more enticing trade-- makes sense.

I wouldn't want Grant. He'd just crowd DeRozan's space. He's also just too goddamn expensive. I'd rather keep Patrick Williams-- or, if I'm trading him, go for someone who's a better fit than Grant.

In disbelief that I'm going to praise Harrison Barnes here, but he'd be a pretty good offensive win now piece in that he'd stretch the floor for DeRozan, for LaVine dribble drive, for Vucevic. The offense would absolutely improve. And while Barnes isn't doing much defending in Sacramento right now (who can blame him?), he's big and physical. Might struggle in iso on a switch against an elite playmaker, sure. But as he showed in Golden State, if he's the fifth best guy on the floor, he can serve a purpose.

My concern would be more about his price-- you couldn't just deal Derrick Jones, Troy Brown, and a first for him. The contracts wouldn't match. You'd like to throw in Coby, ideally, but the Kings have a gajillion guards already. Again, they'd probably ask for Williams. And I don't think Barnes makes enough of a difference to come off Williams already imo. If it was 25-year-old Barnes, maybe. But the relative lack of switchability in the playoffs might render him only playable in spurts.

Someone I *would* come off Williams for is Myles Turner. That'd be an absolute slam dunk. Williams, Jones, McKinnie, and a first for Turner? Shit, I'd throw in a pick swap or something too. I'm a big believer in Turner. He'd space the floor on offense, and he'd be a monster defensively. I don't know if I'd go *this* far, because offensive chemistry is good, but there's a world in which you can deal Vuc in a three team deal, get Turner to replace him, and have an extra 5-6 mil available for an additional piece. Not saying I'd necessarily do that... but I'd stroooongly consider it. Turner would be such a great fit with Zo, LaVine, DeRozan, and Williams next year too.

Other than that, I think there are smaller pieces that would cost less that would make the front court improve, both defensively and in terms of versatility. Guys like Kelly Olynyk or Larry Nance almost certainly wouldn't cost too much but would help shore up the roster. Maybe a guy like Josh Richardson, who could work out but wouldn't cost much if he didn't.

But I wouldn't want Grant. I think Barnes would be fine but probably not for the price. If you're gonna have to give up Williams in a trade, may as well aim for Christian Wood or Myles Turner. And if those don't work, look for low-cost assets.

(But, of course, I'm not a GM. The fuck do I know? lol)

That would position us well for the future and the present. His ability is insane,
and he has the same age trajectory as the other young players on the team.

I’m all for operation Christian Wood, or Bagley, Plumlee, and Zubak.
I don’t care too much for Myles.

I even like the Jones dude on the Kings, and the rookie center for Miami who
has been killing. There are some nice bigs out there who could give us
10/10 and rim protection.

I just hope the bulls don’t do something desperate that would muck up
the present and the future.

and drops to being in the top ten for three pointers for the season, he'll still have value, especially if Klay comes back with a good deal of impact.

What a scary team.

I suppose I could answer my own question by watching some Warriors games, but does Wiggins play good wing/perimeter defense? That'll be key when the playoffs come around I would imagine.

He definitely has shown the propensity in the big moments and the big assignments to take on tasks defensively and do what needs to be done…

… but he still somehow has negative win shares on the season! Only -.1, which is his best to date, and his defensive analytics are positive for the first time in his career in other metrics… but he’s got the lowest defensive plus-minus of any major contributor on the roster. Which is weird!

I know plus-minus in general can be a noisy stat, but he’s never once had a positive defensive plus-minus season, even with the Warriors, so it’s hard to believe it’s *all* noise. It may just be that his lapses, which are far less frequent, happen earlier in games— or perhaps happen in less important games. Or maybe he just really turns it off once the Warriors have built a huge lead or when Draymond is off the court. The last sentence there would be my guess, to be honest, but it’s hard to say without really deep diving.

But it’s genuinely strange that he’s played nearly the same number of minutes as Dray this season, only played 103 minutes of basketball this year without Dray, and has such a lower box plus minus than Dray. lol. (If anything, this underscores the incredible impact of Dray, my easy choice for DPOY this season.)

Still, despite all that, yes, in the big moments and on the big assignments, when the eyes are on and the team needs him defensively, Wiggins is delivering. Which is definitely more than could be said early in his career (or even two years ago), and has been crucial to the success of the Warriors without Klay.

But I’m still pretty blown by his defensive metrics being, while a career best for him, still fairly mediocre. Obviously some noise there, but it’s weird enough that I figured it wa s worth pointing out. Maybe a Warriors fan on here has some insight.

be nasty as a 6th man. glad to see it. he's put in the work. and he's a legit starter-level talent in the league now, in his 3rd year. he's added elements of steph's game (the off ball movement, the step backs, the footwork to get to those catch and shoot 3s off handoffs and split action screens), general warriors ish (cutting without the ball, passing, screening), and improved his own shit (tempering his tendency to over-dribble, being decisive in attacking the rim, utilizing that stupidly quick first step).

2 years ago, even last year, folks were calling for the dubs to chalk him up as a failed pick. he is now a suitable stand-in for either of the warriors HoF guards. so they can load manage, absorb a few minor injuries, etc.

peace & blessings,

I don't think he'll be an all star (maybe especially as a replacement), but still...dude went from traded for KLove to being with a horrid franchise to basically a max-paid role player who had LOOOOOW expectations on a team with Steph & co.

It's cool to see.

I hope nobody is hating on it anywhere. I'd feel the same about anyone who clawed their way out of being considered a bust.

from the field but the rest of his number are right around his career averages.

He came on with so much hype but just ended up being a very good player instead of an all-timer. I think it will still be tough for him to be an all-star this year.

So hitting his career averages while also playing alongside Steph, Dray, etc is a huge win.

I doubt he’ll be an all star but it’s certainly possible given his team has the best record. Given the weird year…absolutely possible there’s a good amount of replacements this season.

LeGM is, but I think that topic has been covered enough here. Because the Lakers are the Lakers, they will find a way.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, still no AD in the lineup.

They really shouldn't have fucked around with what they had other than figuring out how to get Buddy on the team.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Is it the problem though? I mean, when you look at results: LeGM's moves in Cleveland led to a championship; LeGM's moves in L.A. led to a championship.

Not exactly the worst results.

at age 38 Michael dropped 50 points.

This is a rerun to me.

And who was Lebron facing at center? a third string back up in Jones, because
Holmes, Thompson and Metu were out.

Brown had a 50 point game the other day, and it was barely talked about....but
let’s talk about Lebron and the Lakers beating up on bottom dwellers.

Yea - MJ had some breakout games as a Wizard, but he was never performing this consistently at a high-level; he was never playing MVP-level basketball (as LeBron is doing right now and did last year).

Nobody has played this elite this late into their career, including Jordan.

Not debatable.

Mike had 8 40 point games at the age of 38+, and one was a 50
point game. 5 days after turning 40, he dropped a 40 point game.

At the age of 40 Jordan avg 20/5/5.

And Jordan did all that while playing with Popeye Jones and Kwame Brown.
There was no other top 75 greatest player on that team.

The level of difficulty was greater with Mike.

Go sit down somewhere, please

You are wrong.

Holler at me when Lebron turns 40 and drops 40 and avg 20/5/5
without other top 75 greats.

You lose again.

In response to Reply # 68

And that's fine - because he was impressive. he just wasn't shattering precedents like LeBron is doing.

The thing that gets missed in the MJ/LeBron debate is the totality of work that LeBron carries. MJ had the ultimate specialist sidekick (Pippen) to do all the all-around duties so that Jordan could largely specialize as a volume scorer and GOAT-level two-way player.

But LeBron is just different in that he has it all - and does it all (even in year 19). Some have referred to Bron as the next gen blend of Michael & Magic - because you can't really compare anyone to him. Nobody has scored at this elite level while also being this elite of a passer/facilitator. Jordan didn't pass/rebound at this clip and was never asked to carry the multi-faceted burden to this degree (largely because he had the luxury of Pip as an elite swiss army knife to take care of that). Jordan also never shot the ball long-range this well - could never play all 5 positions (and dominate all 5 positions) like this. Nobody in the game's history has been able to lock down Kevin Garnett and D. Rose in the same playoffs with this kind of unprecedented versatility.

He's different.

It's just never been an apt comparison because Jordan is more in the Kobe/KD prototype of doing every well, but really having the DNA of an unstoppable volume scoring specialist. LeBron does that - but he just does so many other things.

The year mike played PG he avg 32/8/8 . He won MVP
and DPoY that year. This was before Pippen and Jackson
offense change. Mike

Lebron never avg 32/8/8 as a PG running the offense.

Lebron went 30/7/7...but that ain’t 32/8/8 now is it?

Mike did.

So Mike was a GOAT scorer and GOAT distributor simultaneously.

Stop lying and learn your history.

Mike is far superior than Lebron at being a scorer and a distributor at
the same time. 32/8/8

You said Lebron had to focus more on facilitating so he couldn’t
be a scorer.

Mike had 7 triple doubles in a row that season.

Mike could do both!

32/8/8.

And Lebron has zero DPOY....And Mike by far is the elite defender
with more all defense teams made.

Stop lying.

tried to get too cute, you see guys not touching an inbounds pass to keep the the clock from starting at the end of the game but I'm not sure it works the same on a defensive rebound and they clock had been started and by the time the ref realized it had to stop the clock and figure out who had possession, Fox had never officially touched the ball even though no Laker was around so it became a jump ball situation

Garland was a little rusty but him coming back into the team = a more winning brand of basketball. the leap this man has taken can't be underestimated.

Cavs make more free throws, Garland and Love hit a little more from 3 and that game isn't close. The turnovers really killed 'em.

Garland vs. Ja = the new CP3 vs. Deron.

Ja took his parting shots against Allen and Mobley (strangely), but those two were limiting which shots he could take.

We'll get them next time.

When Rondo comes into this lineup, bullshit comes to a halt. Portland looks like they'll be the first Rondo game.

Rondo will thankfully be around for the Warriors, hopefully Cedi too.

Ja taking 20+ shots a night?.

When Ja was out, Memphis was beating great and bad teams with ease,
huge double digit wins.

Memphis is getting wins with Ja, but those games are close games.

In my opinion, the ball was shared more and the overall team defense was better
when Ja was out.

2 things will need to happen for this Memphis team to be a championship team.
Ja is going to have to put on some weight and muscle, and take fewer shots
in certain games.

However, he is still very young, so there is time for his game to mature.

I said the agents of Ja Morant, Green, and someone else agents are getting
nervous, because their teams are doing spectacular without them. That’s
what I said in that thread.

And that was true. Memphis dominated an entire month without Ja
I’m not getting your point.

But I also said in another thread that in order for Memphis to
go deep in PO or win a championship, Ja will have to take less shots
and put on muscle.

I’m not understanding your point. And your sample size is 5 games compared
to Memphis beating the hell out of teams for an entire month without Ja

So let me reiterate, so you don’t have to make shit up, I feel that in order
for Memphis to go deep....Ja will have to mature his game, meaning get a stronger
body so that he can be better on defense and take less shots

That way, people can look at the facts and take them as they will.

I think it's indisputable that Memphis has played very well over the last 20 games, without Ja and with Ja. But for Ja's agent to "get nervous," that certainly suggests that Memphis might be a better team without him. Otherwise, there's no need for Ja's agent to get nervous. (Side note: Ja will be getting a max contract regardless, so I think to suggest his agent is anything other than thrilled to represent a young star is silly. But that's neither here nor there.)

But here are the records, including records against definite playoff caliber opponents, for people to make up their own minds about whether there's anything to be gleaned at all about Ja with either of these small size samples.

>I’m not understanding your point. And your sample size is 5
>games compared
>to Memphis beating the hell out of teams for an entire month
>without Ja

WITHOUT JA:

Memphis played 12 games, 7 at home, 5 on the road. They went 10-2.

They played 4 games against teams that are Top 6 seeds in their respective conference. Went 3-1 in those games.

The wins were home vs. Philly without Embiid, at Dallas without Luka at Miami a week after they lost Bam (the Heat went 3-4 in their first two weeks after Bam's injury). The loss was against Dallas after Luka returned.

SINCE JA RETURNED:

Memphis has played 8 games, 3 at home, 5 on the road. They went 6-2.

They played 4 games against teams that are Top 6 seeds in their respective conference. Went 3-1 in those games.

The wins were at Brooklyn with KD and Harden, at Cleveland with Garland, Allen, and Mobley, and at Phoenix with CP3 and Booker but no Ayton. The loss was a single digit loss at Golden State.

Notice you didn’t pick the lakers game where Memphis destroyed
the Lakers with their big 3 and without Ja, and with Ja they almost
lost to the lakers who weren’t fully loaded.

The point is Memphis plays better defense, and there
is better ball movement without Ja because he takes 20
+ shots a game taking shots away from Jackson, Brooks and Bane.
They score effortlessly in that form, as opposed to a guy doing some
take over game stuff.

So let me reiterate for Memphis to go deep in the PO and to win
a chip, Ja will have to stronger in his body and on defense and take less shots

His game is spectacular and lights up the crowd, yes, but for
Deep PO runs, team basketball will be needed.

Russ has the second highest usage rate in the history of the NBA, so it's not a surprise that he's way up there. He's also played more games than one would think off the top-- he's already played more career games than Magic, Zeke, Bird, Iverson, and he'll pass guys like Barkley, D-Wade, Drexler, Kemp next year. He'll play his thousandth career game this year. He definitely averages more turnovers per game than any of the other stars, goes without saying, but his heavy usage plays a pretty high role in that.

Like, obviously not as good an overall player as the guys I'm about to name... but Magic Johnson had a higher turnover rate and a slightly lower assist rate than Russ does. Zeke had a slightly higher turnover rate and lower assist rate. Even Bron, who definitely has a lower turnover rate than Russ, also has a lower assist rate. Those players are obviously more efficient than Russ generally, but their teams were also clearly less reliant on creation solely from them than Russ's teams have generally been on him.

So while, yeah, Russ absolutely gets reckless more than most stars imo, and his inability to shoot consistently has not always been beneficial to his teams when the playoffs roll around... I also think his overall efficiency relative to his insane workload is pretty underrated, and his turnover numbers, while, yes, a bit high, also reflects how much workload he's been asked to carry for the vast majority of his career. (That might not be a popular take, but whatever, lol.)

Um. You gotta be better than this. We're talking about elite scoring and facilitating in one package. Nobody in their right mind would say that Jordan was on-par with LeBron as *both* an elite scorer and passer. I'll concede that Jordan was a more dynamic/elite volume scorer than LeBron, but he was not a better combination scorer/passer. It's really not close.

TF are you talking about? First of all - we're talking about scoring & distributing - not rebounding (but nobody in the right mind would say Jordan was a better rebounder either - because he wasn't).

But did you even bother to look this up?

Lebron in:
'07/'08: 30/7
'08/09: 28/7
'09/'10: 30/9
'10/'11: 27/7
'12/'13: 27/7
'16/'17: 26/9
'17/'18: 27.5/9
'18/'19: 27/8
'19/'20: 25/10
'20/'21: 25/8

He's done this over the course of his career, consistently.

MJ was simply not the passer LeBron is. Stop being absurd.

Jordan:

35/6/5
32/8/8
33/6/6
31/5/6
30/6/6
32/5/6

When Jordan was asked to run the offense for an entire season, he put up better
stats than what Lebron has done in a single season. Just like you stated that
Lebron wasn’t asked to score, and had to focus on passing. I can use that
same argument for Jordan who was asked to focus more on scoring instead of
passing, but was still getting at least 6 assists a game.

As a main facilitator he outdid Lebron, and as a main scorer he still put up PG assist
numbers.

Lebrons career assist avg: 7.4

Not 8

Mike’s 5.3, and he wasn’t asked to be the main facilitator. Lebron was.

When Mike was asked, he went 32/8/8.

7.4 ( main facilitator)
5.3 ( not main facilitator)

not saying he gonna get seeded up by some lesser marley or nothing. when he start playing again, he's going to do some amazing, singularly talented shit, and i'm gonna appreciate it. and then he gonna do some other stuff and i'ma say, kyrie gonna kyrie.

he only gonna play in half the games, but at least he'll be on time for games, i guess.

peace & blessings,

seems like a league wide issue. good players too.

i remember at the beginning of the season that people were saying the new wilson balls are more slippery than the old spaulding joints and dont catch the backboard as well. so maybe thats the issue.

they said its harder for shooters to get the same spin too. and i think 3 pt shooting is down league wide as well.

His finishing in the paint is pure mastery. It’s not based on athleticism. It’s not based
on power or strength. It’s more scientific, where he completely understands the angles
in how he needs to place the ball while being surrounded by multiple defenders, regardless of the size and height of the defenders.

Obviously should've double checked that with research, but I suspected that's what dude meant when I first saw the story. That would be a WILDLY out-of-pocket line even by racist broadcaster standards, lol. Clearly he thought dude's dad was Kevin Porter. At least that's what I thought when I first saw it. I didn't even know the story about KPJ's dad.

Will probably get a suspension or whatever due to not doing the research, and his social media's going to be fucked up for the foreseeable future, but this is one of the rare apologies I'm inclined to believe, lol.

And broadcasters should probably cool it on "pull the trigger" or gun analogies. Seems like it's bound to create inadvertently fucked up statements or social media pushback in general. Especially as those comments pertain to the team formerly known as the Bullets, lol.

I just find it a thousand times more likely that he thought he was throwing a fresh line in about KPJs dad, who he thought was a former player….than he researched and knew that KPJs actual dad shot a 14 year old girl and just couldn’t wait for the moment to get that off.

Word? lol

I agree that he should've done his research and not assumed it was his dad before making a comment on the call about it. He'll likely get suspended, deservedly so.

>would he be referring to busting a nut?

lmao, no. Kevin Porter was a good player for Washington. He's the Washington announcer. KPJ made the clutch play. The announcer was saying "his dad made big plays for us, KPJ makes the big play here." If you assume that the announcer made a mistake in earnest, that is. Otherwise, you think the announcer had a joke lined up about murder on national television in case this one player made a big shot, and the player came through.

Maybe dude is just a closet racist and decided "yes, I'm going to make fun of the murder his father committed on live television." But I think the explanation that the guy assumed an NBA player named Kevin Porter Jr was the son of NBA player Kevin Porter feels like a reasonable explanation.

That a former Wizards player had a kid at 50 that was drafted 2 years ago...and the connection was never mentioned before yesterday

I'm ASSuming this guy would have covered the 2019 draft for WSH
That would have a been a story that would have come up...no?

Or

He's lying because he knows he f'd up

He didn't even say shot...he said trigger

Hit a clutch shot, like his dad...is much different than...pulled the trigger

I'm going with what is more likely.

I mean, you know the internet sleuths are going to be combing through his last hundreds of games. Maybe he's got a history of distasteful jokes that he's been secretly dropping throughout the years, and with this one, he just flew too close to the sun.

Or maybe he just thought Kevin Porter Jr. was Kevin Porter's kid, got too cute with his play call, and royally fucked up as a result.

I obviously think the latter is far more likely (and thought that was the case before I even saw the apology), but that's just me.

Is that a wizards announcer believed he was the son of a former player for the franchise and didn’t mention it during his previous 2 years in the league or prior matchups

He was drafted in 2019
This is his 3rd year in the NBA
and he was holding on to the revelation for *checks notes* a game winner in a Rockets vs Wizards game in January?

As per a reply above, there’s any number of legacy players in the league…and it’s pretty much mentioned every game.

They only had one pick, a Top 10 pick, and KPJ wasn't going to go anywhere near there. If he was a potential lottery guy, I totally agree that would've been a story people would've run with.

Like I said elsewhere, you're right that he should've done a quick Google at literally any point during his prep to check that KPJ was Kevin Porter's kid. He clearly didn't.

Or he did and decided that he thought a joke that would obviously jeopardize his career was the appropriate thing to say for this buzzer beater moment.

We disagree on what we think Occam's razor suggests, but we agree that dude was at minimum underprepared for his job.

End of the 2nd round pick
Rick Brunson gets referenced everytime he plays in philly

I'm saying...anyone that knows anything about basketball in philly knows that's his kid...

There isn't any need for google by a guy that knows dc professional basketball if that was his kid

and it wouldn't take 2 years to be mentioned

I want to make it clear that I don't know nearly enough about this Wizards broadcaster to earnestly defend him as a person. I basically never watch Wizards basketball, no clue what kinda dude he is, lol. Maybe he's a shithead and Wizards folks know this. Maybe he thinks he's funny all the time on calls. Maybe he's a total sweetheart but also a doofus. I've no idea.

I just don't think it's unreasonable to make the assumption that Kevin Porter Jr. is Kevin Porter's kid. I think you're right that, if one paused and actually thought about it, he'd probably have realized that this fact would've likely come up at some point in a previous game. Or maybe he even alluded to KPJ being Porter's kid in a previous game. I don't have nearly enough context to feel with certainty one thing or another. And I'm definitely open to being wrong if more comes out about him.

I just think, on paper, saying "I fucked up because I assume this NBA Junior with a former NBA player's name was that former player's kid" seems more believable than him thinking he could get away in the modern social media age, at a time when more and more broadcasters get suspended/fired for saying stupid/racist shit than ever before, with the most out-of-pocket inappropriate comment imaginable.

But maybe I'm too much of an optimist in regards to what a stranger to me like this would do.

he wasn't, he was a point guard. The only reason people even know his name is because he led the NBA in assists in like 79.

Either way I don't see it as a "honest mistake", you don't see this kid 50 years younger and automatically assume that's his son without doing a little research. With all the drama that has surrounded KPJ recently most NBA people know his story now if they didn't before.

These dudes are always trying to say something slick and clever then trying to backpedal...

>Either way I don't see it as a "honest mistake", you don't see
>this kid 50 years younger and automatically assume that's his
>son without doing a little research.

Do we really look at a 50-year gap between father and son of athletes as crazy nowadays? That's twice now someone brought this up. It may not be *normal,* but there's a grip of athletes and coaches who had kids in their 50s. Rick Barry's kid is in the G-League right now. I mean, shit, Jim Boeheim is 77 and has two of his sons playing for him in college right now. And didn't Jordan just have twins like last year?

I also don't think it's completely crazy for a Wizards announcer, who likely knows the name Kevin Porter already, to make the assumption. There's a handful of juniors in the league who share the name of former NBA players because they're said NBA players' kids, lol. Gary Trent Jr., Tim Hardaway Jr., Jaren Jackson Jr., Kenyon Martin Jr., Larry Nance Jr... I haven't even touched on the Thirds.

He should've obviously done research before saying something about it during a game, that's on him, and he'll pay the price for that. But I don't think it's wildly presumptuous to assume that a player named Kevin Porter Jr. in the NBA might be the son of former NBA player Kevin Porter, lol.

With all the drama that
>has surrounded KPJ recently most NBA people know his story now
>if they didn't before.

I mean, I know this is just one person, but I've been watching KPJ since USC, and I didn't know about this-- or at least didn't remember.

Again, this announcer should've known before saying something based on assumption. There's a baseline of prep he didn't do. He should be punished for this mistake. And maybe a bunch of racist shit will come out about him in the coming days, I'm totally open to the possibility that this guy is some sociopath who thought he was being funny. Who knows?

I'm just saying that, if you see a Jr. NBA player, and you know an NBA player with that same name from decades ago? I don't think it's unreasonable to assume they're related. (And I also don't think it's crazy to think a 70-year-old former NBA player could have a kid in his early 20s today.)

I usually research it for the reverse reason, I'm seeing Jr's come into professional leagues today and their father's are barely retired, I don't think its unreasonable to expect someone that works for an actual pro sports team to do basic research but you can continue to cape for him.

I'm never surprised if announcers say some racist and/or questionable shit, and I don't know nearly enough about this guy as a person to genuinely defend him one way or the other. I'm defending the assumption that he was Kevin Porter's kid. Like I said elsewhere, if more comes out about him, I'm open to the idea that he's a sick fuck making fucked up jokes on TV. I don't think that's as likely as the alternative, but I'd be fine with being wrong.

The only two things I'm defending here:

1. I don't think it's at all unreasonable to assume that a Junior in the NBA who shares a first and last name with a former NBA player is related to said former NBA player.
2. I don't think it's unreasonable to think a 50-year-old athlete can have a baby.

Which is why I tend to believe his excuse. But again, I know nothing about the guy. Maybe he's a sociopath. I'm confident the internet will uncover stuff about him if there's more to find.

>do you follow the NBA? Do you why he was traded from the Cav's to the Rockets in the first place?

Yes, I follow the NBA. He was traded because he blew the fuck up about his locker room and had off-the-court issues. Here's the trade article from ESPN-- a notable lack of references about his father there: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30756372/source-cleveland-cavaliers-trading-kevin-porter-jr-houston-rockets-second-round-pick

He was a chemistry nightmare at USC, was a chemistry nightmare in Cleveland, and certainly has shown flashes of being a chemistry nightmare in Houston. Maybe people discussed at some point "this is because his dad went to jail for manslaughter," but I genuinely hadn't heard that discussed. Or, if it was mentioned while he was at USC, I didn't remember it. Maybe everyone knew about it before yesterday and immediately associated him with his imprisoned father. I'm one of the few that didn't, I guess.

Or just saying it doesn't appear to be as nefarious as it seems?

In either case - it's a stupid thing to say. If it's the mistake some think it is - then it's proof he's a) an idiot for not researching and b) wrong as hell. If it's joking at the expense of KPJ's actual father then that's fireable and beyond fucked up.

That doesn't seem to be 'defense' to me.

his intent, I don’t think his verbal actions are a fireable offense.
He will probably have to issue a public apology, and be suspended
without pay. I think that is a fair assessment.

He is guilty of being ignorant and unaware, and for not researching the
history of the player before making such comments over the air. His words
were inappropriate, distasteful, and hurtful, but it could have been a genuine
mistake.

Kyrie playing part-time is going to hurt this team more than help, this team hasn't spent enough time together for that kind of radical change in the lineup every time they hit the road.

tonight vs Milwaukee they looked sad and desperate, and very dependent on that 22 points that Kyrie gave them in Indiana (plus only 4 guys try play defense on this team. Claxton, Bembry and Brown)

this team misses D'Antoni badly.

Interested to see if Ariza has anything left, hopefully giving some badly needed wing Defense.

To me, this current win streak while mostly playing small just further emphasizes that Davis needs to be the full time center, when he comes back.

aside from some of the personal issues he had here, he's perfect example of a guy that gets caught in the mix of an organization's failures and suffers for it.

this the Malik I have expected to see in the NBA since he played the greatest game I have ever seen anyone play against UNC

beyond the incredible talent he is a super smart player. he's just playing catchup on defensive concepts (and picking up quick as fuck) that the Hornets never instilled.

In high leverage moments, there's no reason for AD to shy away from the C slot to anchor the defense. Everyone knew he had a fairly extensive injury history, but it's frustrating that he hasn't been able to be more durable and take pressure off of LeBron and the team to overcompensate with thin lineups.

God, it's so nice to have someone else who can get people set up to score and more. If we can't have Rubio, Legend of Rondo is the next best choice. Thankfully the Lakers had him.

Cedi was sorely missed. Game's definitely a L without him.

Garland is a star, dogg. More people gonna see it, when they play the Dubs on Sunday and be shocked at what he pulls off.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

until JBB came along, the Cavs didn't really have any notion of roles or possibility of roles within the offense.

Sexton proved he could score early, so he got a green light. But he wasn't that much of a playmaker and the Cavs didn't have anyone else proven (Delly was gone cause he got paid by Milwaukee, then he came back late in one season, then he got hurt). Garland took a while to learn NBA basketball, but last season showed some signs of what he is now.

Sexton goes out of the season early. Then Garland is suddenly in a spot where he has to be more aggressive with the ball and went nuts, especially as a 3-point shooter. He has one of the purest shots this side of Steph Curry for a "traditional PG". He may be more like Steve Nash than I think Trae Young is.

Previous seasons, it was a chore to get him to shoot more than 3 3-pointers a game. Against the Blazers, he took 8, made 5. Had 6 assists, some boss plays on defense.

When Sexton comes back I'm thinking he becomes this teams "Lou Williams" or "Dennis Schroeder" which frankly was where he was about to be projected. Which, frankly, the Cavs need. Dude can score and get some buckets out of the PnR, also make his own shot. Because of his injury I think his next contract is team-friendly and "prove-it" level, but I've no concerns about him. If Okoro could score like him, then I'd be thinking the Cavs look into trades.

May not be the "Sexland" lineups fans thought there might be, but who knows how far DG evolves. If he becomes even more Rondo ish with his offensive skills, it might actually a thing, if we get the right wing. Mobley and Allen are going make things easier.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Malone tends to shy away from playing younger guys, but any warm bodies worth a damn are seeing the floor this year for us. And Bol still couldn't really get off the bench.

Wish him well though.

I wonder if this was motivated by signing Cousins to a 10-day.

they probably will rectify that in the 2nd half.

The Cavs are however, shooting like diarrhea-fied shit as a whole. Lauri might need to sit down and let Drippy Dean take some of those minutes.

They are also rebounding like triceratops shit like you saw piled up in Jurassic Park. Ain't no way Lionel Richie should be getting his own miss at the foul line for a 4 point play. No one is boxing out. Do we gotta get Tristan back here?

Missing Okoro, Sexton, and Rubio rn in that order.

This is a house money game that basically mildly affects the standings. But I don't like losing to these MFs, and the "Klay Back" aspect makes it even more annoying since we gotta wait a whole ass season to see them again.

And Donkeylips ain't even playing. Some bullshit

When Rondo and Lamar Stevens are your top scorers, and no one else even sniffs 20? Bad.

Rondo should be the fuel on the fire, not the fire itself.

And there was no Donkeylips. Team just looked out of it for the most part. Lauri had another putrid night. Couldn't get no good looks for Love or Cedi.

Next season, they better not give the Cavs any games against them in 2022. Want them after a couple months of Sexton and whoever else joins up in the offseason.

Every quarter the Cavs had the Bonus and couldn't capitalize.

On to Sacramento.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I don't think I've ever seen someone block a shot by catching it with both hands.

Dude's head was leveled with the damn rim when he caught the ball.

Makes the play even wilder that he's a damn point guard and is one of the smaller players on the court.

Yikes.

You're not going to win any game when your starters shoot that abysmally - let alone against an ascendant Memphis that has won 12 of its last 13 on the road.

Bron with an absurdly efficient 35/9/7 - but this team really needs AD & Nunn on the floor to beat the top-tier teams.

It’s been known that we aren’t beating anyone in the playoffs without a healthy Bron & AD. Our team has been built around those 2 guys for 3 seasons.

I almost feel like Nunn is getting overhyped at this point.

when AD is inevitably out - as he always is. But Russ hasn't shown to be able to carry that burden, at least as of yet.

As great as Bron is playing, it's not a long-term strategy to have him continuing to carry the burden in this manner, of course.

Re: Nunn -- I actually think he'll be one of the team's best 3&D guys (if not the best) when he gets back; badly needed young legs to anchor backcourt defense as well. Lakers are really struggling to guard young/fast lineups. Nunn can only help there.

The focus was unnecessarily on Russ' turnovers which was irrelevant now he is not turning the ball over but he is not doing Russ other stuff either they need to try to find a happy medium. Vogel's lineups have been suspect at times too. This LeBron at center lineup has been effective at times but trying to do it %100 of the time and not play our bigs at all is some Antoni shit.

load on KD and Harden.

In Kyrie's first game back they both played 40+ minutes.

Tonight KD played 40+ minutes. I don't see that as being sustainable.

The bench is worse that last year. Kyrie in and out of the lineup is fucking with Patty Mills. Softridge is unreliable.

I don't think Nash is equipped to handle all this.

load on KD and Harden.

In Kyrie’s first game back they both played 40+ minutes.

Tonight KD played 40+ minutes.

That bench is trash. Kyrie in and out the lineup is fucking with Patty Mills. Softridge is unreliable.

I don’t think Steve Nash is equipped to handle all this.

RONDO IS GOD

I see why the scouts were closing in on the Kings game tonight. Something tells me Fox and Hield are on someone's plucking list and may be on another team soon.

That being said, wish the Cavs had a guard that could be beside Garland right now that could provide guaranteed offense. Mugs were taking all kinds of 3s and making them.

Nothing but respect for "Classy" Barnes aka Southphillyman. Wish he were on the Cavs too

Garland is gassed and teams are picking on him.
Allen and Mobley bounced back
Lauri had some redeeming minutes.

Lamar Stevens is an "end of bench guy" but I like the dude a lot.

Back to back after a game against The Most Bullshit Team In The NBA, I'll take the win, but hope the guys can rest since the Jazz are up next.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I can’t believe they’re already turned on the guy

Talking about his regression LOL. That’s a toxic fanbase

Also while I’m here thanks for these cavs updates. You got me to tap into these games when I would have otherwise missed out

He's actually running our offense
Challenged our young players
Anchors our defense
No more load management
In the midst of a historic scoring run
Just can't say enough about how much he's grown as a player and leader
Easy MVP pick for 2022/23
E
Z

Observations from tonight's game
There were like 5 people at the game tonight
KPJ is not a professional basketball player
KMartJ >>> have no idea why he doesn't start
Silas won't be around for long.

and I'm not one of those that'll claim the Grizzlies is better without Morrant, but in the fourth quarter when the Grizzlies started to separate themselves from the Warriors, it was mainly with Morrant resting to start the fourth quarter. I was pretty wild to see the Warriors not be able to get defensive stops against the Grizzlies while Morrant was chilling on the bench.

Obviously, I'm happy about the 2020 result but it really does seem like they blew such a great shot at a finals run in the bubble.
