"NFL Announces the Passing of John Madden"

Earlier today we received the sad news that the great John Madden died unexpectedly this morning.
He was 85.

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their
families,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the
Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he
was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

“Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to
me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to
him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”
Memorial service information will be announced when available.

10/10 would watch again.

I had a feeling we'd be getting this news soon after seeing that doc. There's a lot of things in that doc I'm glad he got to hear while he was alive.

It's rare that someone is a legend in any ONE of the fields he lent his mind - coaching, commentary, and digital entertainment - much less all three.

He had a great mind and his abilities touched the sports world in many, many ways.

Here's a thread on Twitter from Justin Tinsley that offers a fond memory involving the video game - https://twitter.com/JustinTinsley/status/1475992820616134656

And this is a classic breakdown of Troy Aikman's beard growing abilities that took place during a DAL/WAS game back in the 90s - https://twitter.com/jonmachota/status/1475985730786799618

RIP

...more enjoyable to me. Grew up on Summerall/Madden, and it was always just like sitting in a living room with two funny grandpas who knew the game real, real well. Haven't had that since.

I don't think people truly understand the impact he had. He was ahead of his time.

- The telestrator
- The clicker
- First down line (yes, that was his idea in the mid-90s!!!! He was told it would be too distracting to the broadcast)
