In response to Reply # 9

Harbaugh has a losing record against Iowa. Even before Harbaugh, Iowa always played us tough. Their offense isn’t very good, but their defense is legit and forces a ton of turnovers. If their defense is able to slow down our running game, and their offense is able to run on us enough to stay out of passing situations where our DEs can get pressure and sacks, then this game will be a close one. Close enough that their DBs could make a big play with a pick 6 or two that wins them the game.

On our side yes we should win. They haven’t really played any good offenses (not that ours is great, but it’s better than what’s on their schedule). It feels like this season every game, and every play all was leading up to getting us in a position to beat OSU, so I’m worried about a letdown this week. But given all of the above I know our squad isn’t overlooking Iowa or taking them for granted.

program in America.

Men’s BB team won the chip last season

Women’s team has been a top program for years
and has recent chips

And the Men’s football team is in the hunt for the CFP.

Not even big ten teams have top women’s basketball teams.

the greatest defense of all time was shredded by an offense that was held under 21 points (regulation) by LSU and Auburn

all those five stars on defense and nobody with the ability to make a big stop or force a turnover

incredible soft performance by the "strength" of their team

nobody on this team is gonna be making a difference on sunday,

Ryan Day has really pissed me off tho, and it started after the Oregon game. He better overhaul the defensive staff sans larry johnson and go undefeated next year and beat the brakes off michigan or I want Luke Fickell in there ASAP bc I dont trust this fat-faced New Hampshire mercenary.

when instead of gutting a defensive staff that was obviously broken...he replaced mattison with a grad assistant. this collapse has been 2 years in the making because of the ridiculous decision to bring in coombs as DC.

i think it gets corrected soon though.

but Notre Dame doesn't have a single win over a team in the most recent CFP Top 25 (if you want to say that list is inane, go for it...but it is relevant to the argument)

the *one* team they played in the Top 25, they lost to at home by double digits

Georgia's resume falls apart pretty quickly, but they have 3 more wins against Top 25 teams than Notre Dame does

In response to Reply # 0

Kirby has to retool his entire offense and stop emulating the way his boss played from 2008-2016

you have to go all-in on blue chips quarterbacks every recruiting cycle, because that's how the game is played these days

Saban realized he couldn't play great defense, run the ball and have a game-manager QB anymore once he went up against Watson and Lawrence back-to-back

honestly I don't see a huge difference with JT Daniels, since either of them are going to operate the offense Kirby wants to have (and if he had kept Fields he would've stifled him too)

for all their top recruiting classes, nothing pops out about their backs or outside skill talent (Pickens is talked about as some underused game-changer, but wouldn't have even got burn at bama the last three years)

once the teams are ranked 1-68 and the top 16 are sorted geographically, they SWEAR that matchups with "human interest" are just randomly birthed sometimes

and the SEC wants 12 at large teams bc of the same mentality that made UGAs 12-1 record worth more than Cincinnati's 12-0 record with a marquee win. until its conference champs (including G5 even if they do a "pre-tournament" to whittle down) with a small handful of at-large ill continue to say the same thing ive said since this started...its just as fake as poll championships.

Michigan and Georgia should be interesting; last week I thought Georgia's style of play is a horrible matchup for Michigan but the former is reeling and the latter is playing their best ball.

I'm guessing it will depend on which QB can maintain their composure.

might as well throw Cincinnati against bama. hopefully bama overlooks them while enjoying their SEC Championship -- Bearcats do have some big corners that could press the way Auburn did, but Ridder will still have to play out of his mind

im not sure it will tho. UM let Iowa get away with selling out on the RB on zone plays, if UGA is allowed to do the same that will put McNamara in tough spots on 3rd down. telling tho that Harbaugh went with trick plays in the first half in lieu of some of the more advanced blocking fronts they showed against OSU. Michigan used the Maryland/Rutgers/Illinois playbook for most of the game. if they are going to hold the line on not letting McNamara run the ball, they'll need the fancy counters or a bigger dose of JJ.

UGA has only seen one group of passcatchers as good as UMs so far and that went...poorly for them. 2nd and 5 is the place to be. 2nd and 9 will make it hard for them to wear down UGAs DL.

On defense, UM needs to do the same thing theyve been doing. get pressure with 4 or 5, set up Ojabo and Hutch for 1v1s, and tighten screws in the red zone. Bennett vs NFL zone blitz packages seems like a good deal for UM, and UGA didnt do anything that 5-6 other teams didnt do against Bama's D.

the way i look at it is that UGA is 0-1 without a significant (developed) talent disparity. i feel good about this.

>the way i look at it is that UGA is 0-1 without a significant
>(developed) talent disparity. i feel good about this.

I really don’t know how good Georgia is. I’ve seen them be dominant against sub-par talent, and then get handled against an Alabama team that hadn’t been looking nearly as good as typical Bama. I understand GA being favored, but 8 points seems to be a LOT.

I really feel good about both Gattis and MacDonald having a month to prep for Georgia, because of the WIDE variety of play-calling we’ve put on tape on both sides of the ball there are a lot of things that we can do. On offense you mentioned all the various blocking schemes. We have 3 backs out of the backfield that all present different options (also it was nice seeing Corum’s speed last night, that ankle must be getting better.) On top of that you have a receiving corps playing well, the different looks we can show when McCarthy comes in, and a couple dangerous tight ends. Gattis has seemed to be VERY intentional about only using pieces of the playbook depending on the opponent (with the most obviously being used in the OSU game). No holds barred at all for the CFP.

On defense there’s a similar aspect of different looks we’ve used. One thing we’ll need to do is be aware of the different ways the refs might make calls when it comes to PI and holding vs. the Big Ten refs. Also DEFINITELY need to be better prepared to deal with tempo.

I feel like we either lose a close game by 3-4 points, or we win by double digits. Either way I’d definitely take us against an 8 point spread…

get Bama Georgia rematch out of the way and let Mich and Cinci decide who the best of the midwest is.

i watched the committee rep guy lie his ass off saying they didnt try to avoid the quick rematch of Bama Georgia. sure pal.

im not mad at their decision or anything but it would've made for better tv in my opinion to see an embarrassed Georgia team get their chance against Bama again.

Cincinnati in the semis, I can objectively say that an Alabama/Georgia final is a WAY more compelling watch than an Alabama/Georgia semi. If they both earn their way to the final and THEN have a rematch, it would feel like the right teams are there. At this point we haven’t really seen Georgia have a signature win, but if they beat us, with the way we are playing right now, it puts a much more clear perspective on their season.

To that point, the Georgia/Michigan final to me has an impact on how we view the SEC and Big Ten overall - if Michigan wins it really puts a spotlight on the fact that Georgia never beat anyone and that the SEC was overrated this year. Flip side of Georgia wins (especially if Bama also makes the final) it reinforces the typical narrative of SEC dominance.

If they’d set up a Georgia/Bama rematch in the semis, it would have been a terrible narrative. It’s REALLY tough to beat the same team two games in a row regardless of the teams. So if Georgia won it wouldn’t feel fair to Bama. If Bama won two games straight it would just be boring, like “we already saw this, and it happened again.” Totally different story when they both earn their way back to the final.

Year in, year out you have two teams at the top of the SEC (Bama, and one other team) who are legitimately great teams. Then the rest of the conference is average at best, but for some reason the SEC consistently gives credit to the remaining 12 teams as if getting through the SEC is some tough gauntlet. It's not.

So when you have a year like this year, it's just assumed that Georgia is that team up there with Bama as elite since they were undefeated until Saturday. But who did they play???

That's why it's important for Michigan to win...if we lose then it supports the narrative of all those garbage SEC teams that Georgia played being legit, while making it out of the Big Ten East is much more impressive.

Tired of Bama and I’m sick and tired of these 3 and 4 loss SEC teams still getting love in the top 25 just so they can say XYZ beat a top 25 team.

Clemson should still be unranked too.

1. making the national championship a conference rematch is less appealing to me and most likely to tens of thousands of people who dont want to watch that game again. i dont see how its less appealing to watch this rematch in the semis than in the title game.

2. I think if you had this regional match up in the semi's ratings would be a lot better. i think a lot of people in the midwest and east coast would be extremely appealed to the Cinci vs Mich game. would casual Wiscy fans watch Bama Mich over Cinci Mich? I doubt it. but would they show appeal to see if Cinci can beat Mich? i bet they'd end up watching.

We're acknowledging that a conference rematch playoff game isn't appealing. Therefore we at least give the opportunity for it to not happen by separating those teams in round 1. Rather than throwing our hands up and saying our fate is sealed so we might as well just get it over with. if mich beats uga then that solves the rematch problem.

outside of the mich alumni base i dont think anyone on the east coast gives a shit about either of these teams. I think any time you regionalize something you eliminate the majority of the US viewership/interest.

I think they ended up using your rationale and (imo) incorrectly ranked Georgia ahead of Cincinnati when objectively its borderline impossible to argue Georgia should be ahead of Cincinnati.

Their biggest win was against Kentucky. Cinci has Notre Dame and a conference championship. they love to preach that its about winning conferences... well you are allowing a 1 loss team without a marquee victory to stay ahead of an undefeated conference champion with a better resume. its bullshit in my opinion. if Cinci was 3 they would be able to boast and brag about their success in picking the teams but this just smells like ratings and feelings.

edit: To your point of throwing your hands up saying our fate is sealed, exactly, they designed it in a way where rematches like this have to happen, and they have to change their goal of objectiveness. the moment you do that you cripple the authenticity of it. thats where im annoyed i guess.

ya, I'm ok with them illogically manipulating standings in order to avoid a back to back conference rematch.

seems like they designed it where it can only happen with sec teams though.

Put Michigan at #1 and Georgia at #4 and you properly have Cincinnati ahead of Georgia, and avoid the SEC semi final. You also manage to avoid claims of SEC bias in putting Michigan above Bama and Cinci above GA while still getting two SEC teams in the CFP.

dabo making an ass out of himself by voting OSU #12 and then getting destroyed, inability/refusal to adapt to NIL/transfer portal, now losing their coordinators who were the backbone of the program.

I think dabo is down for the count.

recognition, $$$, and too recruits on their own. Yeah there’s a small benefit of the conference being seen as more competitive helping for stuff like the above discussion on CFP spots vs. the SEC, but OSU would lose more from Michigan winning a chip than they’d gain. The chips they won in 2002 and 2014 definitely hurt us more than it helped the Big Ten.

of a long term type of thing to break the SEC narrative. We had a squad like Georgia at #1 that long this year without beating anyone (they were definitely boosted from playing a very down Clemson team who is viewed similarly to Bama.)

A Big Ten team in that same position being undefeated...maybe after an early win over an overrated Notre Dame team or some other big non-conference game, wouldn't have that autofilled spot at #1. Well, OSU probably would because like Clemson you've earned that rep. But for two Big Ten teams to make it in the CFP (could have made an argument for it this year even) it would take more than just OSU as having had success in past CFPs. Bama is locked in. But what gives the SEC their rep is that typically every year there's another team right up there with Bama - whether it's LSU, Georgia, or going back further Auburn or Florida.

When a team like MSU went to the CFP like Michigan State in 2015 and gets blown out in the semifinal 38-0, that's a bad look for the Big Ten. Would be the same if we get blown out in the semis this year.

It's a sliver of a benefit for an OSU, which is absolutely outweighed by the negative of Michigan doing well. But it's more than zero benefit.

it's so completely hardwired at this point I don't ever see it ending unless the current tv contracts imploded. which they won't.

> Well, OSU probably would because like Clemson
>you've earned that rep.

And people still cry bloody murder most year's regarding OSU's involvement.

2014 nobody wanted OSU in.

2015 OSU was the most talented team in the country by far and sitting with 1 flukey loss to MSU and they never got any consideration at all for the 4 seed. Bama can pull that off. OSU can't.

Hell, last year you had people nationally and in the midwest who wanted Indiana in the big 10 champ game instead of OSU...and OSU had beaten Indiana head to head!

And this isn't some 'woe is me' shit because OSU has plenty of advantages...I'm just saying it's hard to enough to break the narrative and get 1 B1G team in the mix let alone 2.

You would need another program in the B1G to put in a decade's worth of being a consistent top 5-10 team...and on top of that you would need to get rid of the divisional alignment. If two of the best teams in the conference are in the East (as they almost always are) then someone is sitting home for the championship game and will not receive playoff consideration.

Yeah. It would take an undefeated Michigan and OSU playing each other in the game, with Michigan winning a very close game (because Michigan definitely hasn’t earned the rep to get considered without winning the B1G) and unique circumstances with the other conferences not being strong for both to get CFP consideration.

but project that situation to 2021... if mich is sitting home during championship weekend would they still get in?

nobody outside of the midwest wanted to see that rematch and I'm not sure if feelings would've been any different had it been a 4 team invitational.

i was fist pumping every OSU TD vs MSU. sometimes I need a rival to win to further greater goals. in fact, i want UGA and OSU to win every game before they play Tech and UM bc it behooves my teams to beat highly regarded versions of rival teams. in the postseason tho, that generally goes out the window.

regarding the Clemson/UGA/OSU/MSU hierarchy of hate...if this semifinal were OSU-U(sic)GA id want to see OSU win bc fuck Georgia. I'd rather see OSU win 10 NCs than see the mutts win a single one. however Id want to see UGAg beat MSU bc im around MSU fans every day. Clemson...I dont really care anymore. they arent the laughable losers they used to be and I see zero Clemson fans in my day to day life. id root for them over both B1G rivals but when they play Georgia i root for a norovirus outbreak in the stadium.

I used to feel this way but once the BCS got axed it no longer mattered.

plus, back in the day rooting for mich to go undefeated up to the game wasn't such a big deal because they would only have 1-2 losses at that point anyway so what's the difference? but nowadays it's choosing between an undefeated mich or a 5-6 loss mich and I'm definitely taking the latter.

hell no on the rose bowl. game means nothing and who knows if OSU even shows up to play or how many guys are sitting out. not shelling out any money to watch this defense flop around the field.

will def be in the shoe for the game next year though...

>marcus freeman talking out his ass already

seemed pretty tame to me. good luck outdoing brian kelly who despite being an absolute piece of shit really overachieved at ND.

urban fucked up not hiring freeman as a linebacker's coach way back when instead of best man billy davis.
