1. "Great hire for SC and good move by Riley"
In response to Reply # 0

He knows Oklahoma isn’t winning the Super SEC. He can go to SC and dominate the Pac 12 with them like he did the Big 12 with Oklahoma. If he goes undefeated or 11-1 in the Pac 12 he will get a playoff spot every year like he did at Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is one of the best jobs when it's the Big 12 and you just have to outduel the latest Texas savior and Mike Gundy

He’s getting way better job security in a way better city, but all over Twitter I see “he’s scared of the SEC!”

Yeah, if you offered me two non-football jobs, same pay, one is in LA, and one is in Norman (or Baton Rouge) with way less job security, not a soul on Earth would be saying “you can’t handle Norman! you’re scared of proving yourself in a place you’re more likely to be fired in the next 4 years!” lol

happens a lot with players. People put unrealistic expectations on someone else’s career choices, that they wouldn’t put on their own. He or my favorites is “he took the easy route”. Like, if they had a choice between two companies and one was much better and offered a much better path to personal success, they’d choose the worse one.

closely enough to know that. The two companies thing was for my example of a player going to a better team and people saying he took the “easy route” to winning. I realize after rereading, that wasn’t clear, at all. My bad.

He wants to win and it will be much hard to win when Oklahoma joins the SEC.

I’ve seen some people refer to Oklahomas as becoming the Tennessee of the SEC West (sorry Will) and they probably aren’t wrong.

Take the pay raise, lesser competition and living in a better city all day Riley.

His ceiling is P5 DC or G5 HC.

UW would be replacing Lake with the white version of Lake, just without the hitting players baggage.

UW would be doing Cal a major favor if they hired Wilcox as we wouldn’t have to buy his bum ass out.

they should have hired Nieumatololo when they hired Wilcox, and now theres a younger option in Jeff Monken

what Paul Johnson did at GT would have gotten him a statue at Cal, and he wouldnt have had to beat Richt/Beamer/Dabo/Jimbo to do it.

hire a disciple and enjoy some fun times. bowl games, conference title games, playoff hopes in november...i have seen the promised land for an academically snobby P5 school with admissions headaches, and its only a midline veer option away!

On moving to the SEC. Oklahoma is a great program in the Big 12, in the SEC they will be a good program that will win 7-9 games and occasionally 10.

Riley wants an easier path to the CFP playoffs, SC gives him that.

If he turns SC around, Pac 12 goes to 8 conference games, and Oregon stays good then the Pac 12 national relevance rises and he gets an easier path to the CFP.

This is a win for SC and the Pac12.

Though you're acting like the man wasnt already a multi-millionaire....despite not actually winning anything. With the coming move to the SEC his track record of under-achieving would have been exposed even more. Now he gets more money and an easier conference. The money doesnt cancel out the ducking.

>SC is probably the better gig financially but dude wants no
>part of the SEC and I don’t blame him.

It's not just a better gig financially-- it also puts him in a better position to succeed, and it puts him and his family in a far superior city (no offense to Norman, it just doesn't compare to LA).

Why would *anyone* want a part of the SEC with that competing job offer on the table? Only three of the 14 coaches there have been there for over half a decade-- only two have been there more than 6 years. Turning down the USC job just because you "want a part of the SEC" would be a huge gamble.

>but you are also talking like USC will be top dog with Riley.
>We have seen more than a few coaches move on and fail.

I don't know that they'll be top dog. All I know is there's a considerably clearer path to success and glory. And more money. And a better city. And an easier path to winning recruits. I mean, there's just so much USC has going for it vs. the Oklahoma or LSU jobs.

Even if you’re lucky enough to recruit a high caliber HS QB, then actually develop him and he lives up to his potential, he is gone after 3 seasons and you start right over again.

At least with Murray he could have his franchise QB locked up for the next decade and win and still get paid.

In CFB, you’re one QB bust away from getting fired.

>at this point...

But if you lose 3 games in a season and/or a couple of your 100 players slaps anyone at the club or something, alumni and boosters will cry in corners (and Twitter and meathead message boards) until your name is mud and/or you’re fired.

Kevin Sumlin for instance.

If you keep your emails tight and don’t hitch your wagon to a total bust qb, you can be around in the nfl for a while.

Kliff has a qb he loves, a NFL division he can compete in, and he’s viewed as an offensive mind during a time where that’s damn near all people care about cuz fantasy sports and gambling (Bellichek is winning again meanwhile). And he’s not counting on voters who don’t watch games and computers to put him in the playoffs if he loses 1-2 games in a season. Oh, and he’s not dealing with the same level of player turnover. Aka the nfl gigs can and generally are more stable. If shit goes bad in the NFL, THEN you go hide as a guest star OC or in a midmajor somewhere to rehab yourself.

Yeah, it’s a wild situation. Kliff hated the politicking of college and digs the pros cuz it’s mostly football and managing relationships with the players.

36. "Kingsbury hated college football"
In response to Reply # 16

He hated recruiting (and wasn't good at it). He hated dealing with boosters. He just wanted to coach.
Why would he go back to that when he's had NFL success.

https://www.espn.com/blog/arizona-cardinals/post/_/id/31729/can-cardinals-coach-kliff-kingsbury-find-college-to-pro-success

Jumping from college to the NFL also relieves Kingsbury of one of the fundamental aspects of being a college coach: recruiting. That, in addition to not having any of the peripheral responsibilities that accompany representing a school’s football team, such as fundraising and meeting donors, has opened up Kingsbury’s schedule so he can just focus on football.

"That's a huge plus for me,” Kingsbury said. "I enjoyed all aspects of being a head coach in college, but the recruiting, that’s the lifeblood of any program. That should be your focus. That may not have been my focus at times as much as it should’ve been because I wanted to coach the quarterbacks and be in the X's and O's and study other offenses.

"Now I get to do that and make that first and foremost, and it’s been good."

recruiting is such a grind, especially now with the early signing period. you can have a staff of NFL coaches, but if they don't want to recruit, you aren't going to have elite success.

Right!

Look, when people started sitting back and letting coaches get canned over 3-4 loss seasons, this set off a chain reaction to where coaches and their staffs are trying to get out before they get put out. And really, no towny big school coach wants more attention. Being in a city that revolves around your college team is enough bullshit in of itself. You don’t want to be on tv more and/or having your own conference being a gauntlet like the SEC is.

All of that is hurting the LSU job. Also, people are making the job worse with the way the expectations don’t match the pedigree. I had to tell some of my boys with sternness to quit thinking that a big shit head coach who already has a good job would leave their spot to come fuck with LSU. Why!? Who wants to bother with Saban, a growing parade of big money schools taking recruits out of your state, scandals that get out cuz your front office isn’t doing enough ‘erasing’, and fans that think another Joe Burrow unbelievable season should just happen every 2-3 years?

I had to go look. It is more than that! The 'one public appearance for LSU a year' has to have a void clause I figure, right? Hell, I have no idea if O wants to coach anywhere else. His overall win-loss at LSU should be good enough if he can swear that he's got his personal stuff cleared up (IE: divorce final, he'll keep the groupies away from practice, he has any abuse issues under control, and he won't leave the gate open for foolishness from his players). Hell, he might not even need to do all of that to get a middle of the road gig.

Maybe Kelly's tired of academic recruiting restrictions. Or maybe there's just an absolute monster of a contract coming, lol.

But yeah, leaving Notre Dame... I didn't see that coming. It'd be like, I don't know, someone leaving Indiana basketball to coach at, like, Florida. (Not a perfect comparison, but it's just weird to think of a Notre Dame coach leaving for another team!)

Please believe me: I had this all the fuck wrong. I was very blind to the idea that any name brand coach could switch gigs and double up salaries. At least. Wow.

Like this has gotta be one of the most surprising coaching moves I’ve ever seen. Kelly goes to ND, does okay at first then struggles, then gets them into playoff contention after ND sticking with him and making some changes, and he leaves to go to LSU? And compete in the SEC???

There’s just so many variables. ND seems to be a cake job at the moment because with their non-conference situation it’s not nearly as hard for them to make the playoffs vs. being in the SEC or B1G. BUT because of their academics and the Catholic school situation its harder to get the super elite players that would have them actually winning the CFP.

We talked about it up above, but the landscape is just different now for these college coaching contracts. Between NIL deals for players and boosters paying for 10 year guaranteed contracts, the $$$ is ROLLING.

So what’s the domino effect? Does ND go after Fickell? If so do they wait for him if Cincinnati is in the CFP? ND could end up in the CFP themselves this year - imagine if they play each other with ND having Fickell hired but not announcing it until after they play each other in the CFP (not likely since one of them would probably be at #4 matched with Georgia, but it could happen…)

Man, these dudes are out for self. And we wonder why kids are sitting out games/leaving early to go pro/all of that.

And to be fair to dude, we're currently assuming that his salary is going to at least DOUBLE from his time at ND. We don't know what of wild perk, house-buying, car-buying, jet-using shit they're gonna throw on top of it either.

I've seen regular folks with office gigs act a complete fool on the way out AND be mad weird afterwards over a 10k raise. So yeah, I think I get it. I'm guessing he rolled up on ND like 'heyo, where the money at?', ND gave him the pockets with the bugs bunny ears, and his agent started making/taking calls.

is a turn off… especially with OU and Texas going to the SEC.

What used to be an awesome schedule now looks meh compared to other schools.

Plus ND is lame af.

Look at an ND crowd and look at those SEC crowds

Players transfer to other institutions, and coaches move on. It’s that simple.
It’s free enterprise.

He accomplished all that he is going to accomplish at ND, and has
done an outstanding job considering the academic requirements at ND.

Had ND joined a conference, he probably would have stayed. ND needs
to join the Big Ten and get it over with.

I was about to say if USC and Michigan return to prominence it could help their schedule out but I just realized they don't play Michigan anymore.

Snoop back on the sideline in…1, 2, 3, before the 4.

I can’t wait to get Chip Kelly fired, put the Pac-12 place-holders back in their place like a disobedient child, keep Cali kids home, be relevant nationally, contend for titles again, rescue college football from the boredom of the Big 10 while being sexier than anybody in the SEC, and have Lincoln Riley still be younger than me right now when Saban retires.

Not an exact quote and IDC enough to look it up
But some of what I caught on sports radio about this reported deal

$10M per was the salary range
USC bought both of his houses in OK over market price
USC bought him a $6M home in LA
Use of a private jet
Buyout of his OK deal

I respect Tomlin for valuing the PIT HC position...but those numbers are just f'n silly
He's a better man than me.

in so many words, Tomlin said "I don't kiss ass". With a few exceptions (Saban, Kirby), most of these guys have to kiss teenager ass and old republican booster ass almost every minute they aren't in-season.

It's hard to picture Mike Tomlin sitting in a 17 year old's living room in Long Beach begging him to come to USC. Fuck that, this is the Steelers dude...If they somehow hit the open market tomorrow they'd sell for 6 or 7 Billion dollars.

of course his response was valid
The issue was the implication that even associating Tomlin's name with the USC HC job was an insult
From that thread's OP
"so disrespectful to ask a Black head coach with 15 years in the NFL if he is thinking about college in a presser during the season"

This deal is approaching $200M...I don't see the insult

To your point about the valuation of PIT...how don't these NFL coaches now ask for raises?

He has a private jet because his ass is going to be on it A LOT begging kids to come to USC.

To me its an insult because the goal for 99% of NFL coaches was being an NFL coach.

This is why you rarely see gainfully employed NFL coaches leaving for college.

lol at begging kids to come to Southern California, especially in this day and age when they're allowed to make money off their likeness? and now they get to play in the shadow of HOLLYWOOD?

4th fastest coach ever to have 150 wins

2 SB appearances
1 SB win
3 AFC Championship games
9 Playoff Appearances
7 Division Championships
9 years with a top 5 Defense
Never had a losing record as a head coach

and you really think an 8-8 playoff record is bad? lmao

I never acted like Tomlin was anything but an accomplished head coach that will be in the Hall of Fame when his career is over.

You out here tap dancing for USC who hasn’t been relevant since Lauryn Hill was actually showing up for shows.

and he tried his best to give away the one superbowl he won, I didnt forget that 16 point lead that he nearly squandered away

but this is what his coaching tenure really looks like

2009
no playoffs
4 of 7 losses against sub 500 teams

2010
lost to a 6 seed packers

2011
loss to 8-8 broncos despite being favorites

2012
no playoffs (4 of 8 losses to sub 500 teams)

2013
no playoffs (4 of 8 losses to sub 500 teams)

2014
one and done home loss to 6 seeded ravens

2015
Blew a 4th quarter lead and lost to a 40 year old noddle armed payton manning

2016
had to kick 6 Fgs to beat an Alex Smith led team lmao
Embarrassed by NE in the AFC chip game

2017
One and done playoff loss to Blake Bortles

2018
No playoffs, lost last 3 games of the season to miss them, and only 1 of 8 wins came vs a team over 500

2020
Lost to baker mayfield playing without a HC and in his first playoff game
lost 5 of 6 to end the season

mike "no losing seasons tomlin" has won a playoff game in just 4 of his 14 season as a HC

He won a Superbowl with Bill Cowher's players in his 2nd season and has since won 3 playoff games in the last 11 years (vs AJ Mccron Matt Moore and Alex SMith)

edit, it's not bad if you're a Lions fan like me. I thought the Pittsburgh Steelers were the embodiment of NFL success, I guess not though.

Pittsburgh hasnt won anything worth noting since Michael Jackson was alive and Obama was president.

USC is a better job than the Pittsburgh Steelers in the year 2021 (with the contract that Lincoln Riley was given)

its a clear admission of holding a Black coach to a higher standard than the rest of the field

All this means is Tomlin has a better record against teams with better records. What you are suggesting is Tomlin should have a .740 record to be considered an accomplished head coach. Which is how racist do. Why doesn’t the Black man beat everyone every week? How dare he lose to teams with other professional players on it

Every head coach has losses to sub .500 teams. Now, how many of these teams actually finished sub .500?

Wow.. you showed me how a coach with 150 wins and a .643 winning percentage is somehow an average head coach because he hasn’t been to more than 2 SB’s like… .02% of
all head coaches in the modern era.

There are only 3 head coaches in the history of the NFL who have coached as many games as Tomlin with a higher winning percentage

and winning with Cowhers players? Now its the Pittsburgh Cowhers not the Pittsburgh Steelers huh? lmao

stick to college homeboy.. you are out of your league when discussing the NFL.

No its about the PITTSBURGH STEELERS. I hold the Cowboys, and Steelers and Packers and other traditonal winning franchises to higher standards.

no one cares where you hold these franchises.. lol. Who the fuck are you? I compare Tomlin to his peers and by all measures he is head and shoulders above 95% of head coaches who have the same amount of games coached. I would think only put Andy Reid and the cheatin ass cheater above Tomlin.

>If he was the coach of any other team, he'd be doing
>OUTSTANDING.

He isn’t.. he is the Steelers head coach and he is doing fine. One might say he is winning too much which is why we haven’t had a top 10 pick during his tenure. Cowher had a few 7-9 years and a 6-10 year which gave us a chance to draft Ben. Cowher didn’t even want Ben, he wanted a tackle.

or snap the ball over Ben’s head on the first play

but if you specifically asked me about this game I would tell you resting starters after losing 3 of 4 to end the season was a terrible move by Tomlin.

you brought up 13 years of “failure” its much easier to “defend” his career than it is to defend a few plays in a blowout loss. We got embarrassed and every loss goes
on Tomlin’s resume.

and yes, we have a few buckeyes on the roster, pretty sure we had players from other colleges as well… lol. I’m sure the other 85 or so schools also want all the credit those SB’s.

Pete Carroll had been fired from 2 NFL head coaching jobs and had no choice. If the Steelers were to fire Tomlin he would have his choice of open NFL jobs.

edit. Yes, Pete Carroll sucked for years in the NFL, got to USC, and landed every player he wanted. But I'm not sure Tomlin is as good of leader, or a people person that Pete Carroll is (Pittsburgh has had more than its share of locker room issues). So you may have a point there.

and yes my undergraduate years were amazing. I wouldn't want to relive them though. I like having a lot of money.

>Like Tomlin couldn’t get the Rams or Chargers job in a few

Delusions of grandeur from a Yuengling chugging yinzer. He's having a mediocre season (im being polite here) and no free agents are flocking to Pittsburgh to play for an aging Rothlisberger and old-ass toothless defense.

You out here acting like its 2009 and shit. Pittsburgh is now the Dallas Cowboys of the AFC north. Tomlin doesn't turn things around in a few years, he's good because there is less pressure in Pittsburgh to win than there is Los Angeles.

now that may change of course but... ND getting the best recruiting class in the country, with him and the OC a big part of that (I doubt Brian Kelly is the guy swaying these kids and their parents) hard to imagine they drop worse than 9 spots to get 10th or worse.

he also comes from Cincinnati, the Catholic haven of the Earth. i personally think they'll hum right along with recruiting. this is the first time in my life i can look at Notre Dame and say "that seems like a cool place for a teen not from the midwest to go play" with their current coaching environment of new school guys, that are out of Kellys shadow now.

any less idiotic

i cant even find a direct quote of him saying it. best i can find is that his wife in 2008 said on a radio show that he considered nd, mich, osu 'dream jobs'.

and *apparently* he had clauses for those schools written into his contract at utah or florida.

meanwhile it's 2021 and life has changed a bit. Freeman is quite clearly the guy at ND.

but I like this hire. risky, but even slam dunk (c) hires have bounced off the rim at blue-chip schools. and there's nothing inherently wrong with not having head coaching experience -- Lincoln Riley, Dabo, Kirby, Day, etc.

at least they are going for it.

Obviously you don’t know me.

I grew up watching Reggie Jackson, Munson, Henderson, etc.
This was when Yankees and Dodgers were the only baseball that
was being shown for game of the week....so you either rooted for the dodgers
or the Yankees....white Sox is my home team, Yankees are my second team.

It’s across the street from the Detroit Athletic Club and I used to play gigs there 2-3 times per month before the pandemic. Dilla’s Delights was the spot to go while on break.

"It's total chaos right now," Swinney said Wednesday at Clemson's signing day, per All Clemson. "Tampering galore. Kids are being manipulated. Grass is greener and all that stuff as opposed to putting the work in and graduating.

"There's no consequences. So now you've got agents and NIL, tampering, and you have no consequences. No consequences equals no conscience. There's no reason for pause, no barrier for young people, like, nothing. Education is like the last thing now."

^ very mad his best assistant left and those pre-NIL Clemson bags are much lighter now. guy has to be the most high profile baby in CFB these days.

so Clemson would be the destination if academics were priority #1?

and Clemson is the honorable recruiting institution that cant compete with other places paying their players?

are those the inferences hes making here?

bc from the perspective of this Georgia Tech alum who watched him dirty recruit us for like 8 years i find those inferences downright HIGH-larious

just lament the lack of integrity of the players and bring up the word "degree" over and over when you lose control of the system

and yes, he is mostly upset because now people can pay above the table and Clemson doesn't have the same advantage

another megachurch has opened up next to pastor Dabo and he is not happy

but i dont think what's going on right now in cfb is sustainable for the long haul

while I dont have any ethical objections as to what's occurring, i cant say that im all that interested in keeping up with it either. between the portal, NIL and coaching changes i find this musical chairs act to be kinda boring.

the quinn ewers money grab stuff was pretty funny. he was the highest rated recruit of all time (although i questioned that rating from the jump)...and you think back to say the terrelle pryor recruitment when we hung on this kid's every move. with ewers it was like 'ok see ya'. I don't really care.

because NIL and the portal are still new, but over time everything will normalize.

just like when December signing day was instituted, there was fear that all the top 50 recruits would hold out and sign in February...they didn't. now there is no silly season all winter waiting for recruits to flip (the early period lot more work for the coaches, but they are also getting paid much more these days).

Ewers and Uiagalelei were part of the dot.com bubble. lessons learned by the businesses who gave them big endorsements, and NIL sponsorships will be more closely guarded moving forward. coaches have already adapted. even Day seemed prepared for this:

“If you say, ‘Let’s just bring in (a blue chip QB) every two years,’ well what if you’re wrong?” Day said. “How do you know?

"I don’t know, and this is what I do for a living. How do the guys in the NFL know? They don’t. When you look at the statistics of where guys have been drafted in the top-10 picks the last 20 years, they miss a lot more than they’re right.

"And if you’re wrong, you’re in trouble. That’s not how we’re going to do this. There’s just too much at stake here. I think it’s the right thing to do if you’re at Ohio State.”

seems like it's mostly just a way to pay recruits above board. so I would think if anything that it escalates.

the whole idea was that the reggie bush's of the world would be compensated for what they earn the universities. not for some 17 year old kid who may not crack the 2 deep.

also, i dont think early signing day has been a net positive at all.

Ewers being an example of an extreme outcome. there will be more kids good enough to forego their senior season of high school, but that will always be a very limited number.

to me, the NIL exists so if someone wants to pay Ohio State players for signing memorabilia, they have the freedom to do so (just like regular college students). it works because they have to be important enough to have someone want to pay them. everyone overpaid this year thinking they all were buying Amazon shares in 1999. but the market will correct itself to a degree.

why do you think the early period is an overall negative?
