"Tomlin: Anyone asking Sean Payton or Andy Reid about college jobs???"

My coach was HOT!!!!

some jughead ass reporter asked him about interest in coaching college since people threw his name out there.

the 22:30 mark.. https://youtu.be/C9_3ifYgfzU

so disrespectful to ask a Black head coach with 15 years in the NFL if he is thinking about college in a presser during the season

“aint a booster with a blank check big enough”

I know you are never supposed to say never but NEVER!!!!

****************
TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

you can't just speak this shit into existence.

and then the fanbase gets disappointed when they don't land belichick or some other football god.

SC is gonna wind up with franklin fresh off of losses to Iowa and Illinois and an ass beating by OSU. congrats.

Just goes to show how delusional people are about their schools.

Mike Tomlin, because his history as an elite coach is outstanding
and he knows how to run a staff. And that they should offer him
whatever he wants.

I don’t think race or any kind of tokenism had anything to do with it....

Mike is a stand up guy and is very loyal, so of course he has no intentions
of leaving Pittsburgh. But coaching College isn’t necessarily a step back, college coaching salaries rival some nfl salaries, and College is a coach’s league where they carry a lot of power (maybe even too much power).

I actually think the act was a form of appreciation or respect...

No college is interested in Andy Reid or Sean Payton.....names aren’t
hot enough in my opinion, and with the success Dion Sanders is having
at JSU, a lot of institutions are going to try to emulate that.

Almost every year some NFL coach’s name gets thrown in the rumor mill
regarding a college coaching position.

not surprised you would say this dumb shit.

no one brings up Sean Payton or Andy Reid because they are viewed as NFL coaches.

No one brings up an NFL coach as a possible hire unless they are struggling in the NFL, they came from college recently or they are on hot seat.

it isn’t a compliment.. its an insult.

Your approach is always combative.

My point is that Ryan Clark buzzed it way before USC did, which he stated
as much on ESPN. He was the first to associate Tomlin with a college
program, and he is black.

Pete Carroll coached for the Patriots, and then later on went to USC
and turned them into a powerhouse institution. So I think USC was thinking
along those lines again.

I don’t think the rumors regarding Tomlin were racially motivated, as
him not being considered a great NFL coach. I think it has more to do with
getting someone who can attract top black athletes, and at the same time
having the ability to fix and clean up an institution.

If Tomlin were released by the Steelers his phone would be ringing off the hook
from College and NFL teams. He is well respected on both platforms

We are are not talking about some school like SMU here. We are talking
about USC one of the greatest college football institutions. Shit, and with the
way college is going, the NCAA may soon be dead, and colleges move on to
create their own super leagues.

I didnt just pull their names out of thin air.

The point is no head coach who is headed to the HOF (yes, Tomlin is going to Canton) is asked about a college gig during the fucking season.

and its crazy that Ryan and Carson, who went to these schools can throw Tomlins name out and that makes it an acceptable question…

during a presser

during the season

his 15th season

for a franchise with 6 SB rings and a history of never firing their coaches

yeah.. Tomlin will leave all that for USC because????

and I said in the OP the reporter was a jughead.

It’s lazy and bold more than it is racist. We have been living in the trolling era since Geocities.

Folks asked Bill about benching Brady one year when they lost a Monday night game badly and we’re like 2-2. They proceeded to SNK boss the league for like 2 months just after. It might’ve been the onto Cincinnati presser..don’t remember for sure but it was ridiculous. Brady hate was so strong that people gave it energy. It’s adorable considering what has gone on since then.

PIT is obviously trending down
Most likely looking at a rebuild with Rothlesburger cooked
Possibly Tomlin’s 1st losing season
The speculation fits IMO
After 15 years…is Mike really excited about a rebuild with PIT
OR
Could he be enticed by another offer
?

Reid was in the SB last year
Payton turned the aints into champs

It’s not like he was asked about coaching Allegheny community college
SC is a highly coveted job
This is an over reaction.

It was a simple question . Save that rah rah anger for your subpar offensive and defensive lines

Dude won a Super Bowl 13 years ago bc Santonio made the greatest catch in Super Bowl history

What has he done since besides get angry in press conferences and keep a sharp lineup ?

He’s acting like he won something as of recent lol

And the whole booster blank check line was pure bullshit. Money talks.

Mike Tomlin has been in the NFL for 20 years and a head coach for almost 15 with a SB under his belt. No coach with his resume is looking at any college jobs.

When Pete Carroll went to USC he had been fired from 2 NFL head coaching jobs in a span of 4 or 5 years and literally had nowhere else to go.

yes the question was fine given the carson palmer rumor and it was also fine for tomlin to use that moment to grandstand and curry favor with the fans and organization. he didn't disrespect the reporter in any way. and the reporter gets a great soundbite. both parties win.

for some reason it wont let me post in the subject

asking a Black NFL head coach of he is thinking about a college gig is… racism at its finest.

You can’t be Black

as hard as it is to get a HC gig and to have one this long with a stable franchise who will more than likely let him leave when he wants

and a reporter is trying to sprinkle in doubt simply because some talking heads are desperate to get a head coach for their boosters?

nah man.. that shit is booty.

The crux of which is fundamentally flawed and intellectually dishonest and all I've done is point that out. I've issued no judgment on anything else because there's nothing else about your argument to really comment on.

If you wanna say that despite the broadcasted Tomlin specific rumors that the reporter should've kept his dumb question in his back pocket then that's fine. And if you wanna say that the reason the reporter didn't keep the question in his back pocket is because he's racist then that's fine as well. You can speculate as you wish and there's no way to prove it right or wrong.

Also, they did ask Urban the same question about SC. Which I get isn't quite as stupid as asking Tomlin since Urban is a 'college guy' but it was still a moronic question. But it's not as if the media asking stupid questions based on credible or non credible rumors is a new thing. It happens every day.

asking Urban would be fucked up but like you said.. he just got here so that makes sense.

What doesn’t make sense is saying since Carson threw his name out that means it’s acceptable to ask that dumb ass question. You even said it was stupid of Palmer to bring up Tomlin because it wasn’t happening.

so either you are arguing just to argue or you got triggered when you heard the word racist.

I even said I wasn’t mad at Palmer and Ryan for wanting a great coach at their school, it was the reporter that was the dumb ass in post #18

honestly I don't find this story important enough to be arguing all night about it. I trust that tomlin is gonna be ok.

i think the sc head coach rumor mill left reality a long time ago and this has all just gotten pretty stupid at this point.

And Carson Palmer is a former pro bowl Heisman winning NFL quarterback who definitely has ties to USC big wigs

but these are just former athletes who want to see their teams return to glory

it was still a wish and a dream..

its not like the AD at LSU named dropped Tomlin on some short list.

and the guy who asked Tomlin that question is a POS local reporter. He’s loving the attention even tho 99% of it is negative.

a respectable reporter would never float that question.

Eugenics used in the concussion settlement is racism in the NFL

Plenty of examples of racism in the NFL to be outraged at

a black HC being suggested as a potential candidate for a highly coveted HC position...ehh...feels like a reach

especially considering the other 2 stories mentioned

be mad about that.

why would Tomlin leave that to go to colleges that fire coaches every 3 to 5 years if they don’t win a chip?

Doug Williams, the greatest black QB of all time ( in my book),
and could have been the greatest of all time, was the lowest
paid QB in NFL, and 13 BACKUP QBs were payed higher than
him.

He turned the Buccaneers franchise around, and turned them into
true contenders. They were primed to compete for several SBs,
but the owner was candidly racist, and refused to pay Williams
on the same pay scale as other starting QBs.

The Buccaneers franchise fell into the cellar when he was basically
forced to leave, and they remained that way until the 2000s!

In response to Reply # 48

It was overt and covert.
It was acceptable to pay black players extremely lower than white players.

That doesn’t exist now, and wouldn’t fly today.

Racism still exists. That’s for sure, but to say it’s more racist now than it was back
then is an insult to those black players who were denied the opportunity to have
financial and on field success.

There are more NFL black coaches. There are more NFL black QBs,
and black players are some of the highest paid players in the NFL

To compare eras of racism is not an intelligent take it does all black
people involved an injustice.....

I won’t deny that the NFL denied money to worthy players.. but we just saw that shit happen to a player because he kneeled during the anthem.

and the whole country got involved over it.

but yes, there are more Black players and its because owners realized not paying them was bad for their pockets.

I have issues when people say “this owner isn’t racist, he has Black players”

In response to Reply # 42

Of course it was always there. And depending on setting/location/$$$/etc. it's been at varied levels of openness. But things are at a weird point right now where awareness around racism has worked on different levels - there are racist folks out there who are empowered by knowing that there are plenty others who feel the same way as them, and they have the ability to be blatant about it in ways not seen since the civil rights movement.

Then at the high levels of the socioeconomic scale, rich folks and companies like the NFL found out exactly how to be blatantly racist and get away with it by controlling the narrative. Just saw that yesterday with Goodell announcing that the WFT investigation won't be public.

and admits he got ahead of himself.

I’m changing my tune on Palmer and Clark now that I read what they actually said.

While these dudes are trying to get their schools back to glory they were thirsty af in doing it.

Palmer said “Tomlin is the wild card, IF HE WANTS OUT!!!”
wait.. if he wants out? Why float that nonsense?

Ryan Clark always bashes AB and the Steelers about causing unnecessary drama and them he does this shit?

His apology:

“This is partly my fault. … That’s my fault Coach T, they said you might be in the running for it and when they asked me about it, coach, I was like, ‘I’d like for you to come.'”
“The fact that we (LSU) thought about it, if it’s true, I don’t care if he’s mad. … I said ‘coach, I didn’t say you were coming. I didn’t say you were interested. What I said was, if you are, we should offer you all the money we possibly can to get you to take the job.'”

he also said he would quit TV to be the LSU DB coach if that is what was needed to get Mike to come. Nigga aint coached a damn thing in his life.. lol. Thirsty ass..

He started all this on a local Pittsburgh radio show so yeah..
both these dudes aint shit for doing this to Tomlin.

>Palmer said “Tomlin is the wild card, IF HE WANTS OUT!!!”
>wait.. if he wants out? Why float that nonsense?

SC needs an exciting pie in the sky option to float out there and the 2 guys whose names are always floated for this shit (Urban and Gruden) are no longer exciting because they are now recognized as horrible human beings.

the rest of the list was pretty laughable too. two ohio lifers (fickell and campbell) who prob wouldn't even vacation in LA for the weekend let alone move there permanently. and franklin. who really seems like their guy.

throwing tomlin out there creates some buzz and makes it seem like SC is pulling out all the stops for this search.

that's my theory at least.

Dude sucks and has already quit on his players and is dreaming of LA and Baton Rouge

And this week in his press conference he said :

My focus is completely on Illinois and this team and this program,” Franklin said. “I think I’ve shown over my eight years my commitment to this university and this community, and that’s kind of my statement.”

Franklin meant to say Ohio State, this week’s gargantuan opponent, not Illinois, the source of last week’s humiliation. He referred to the Buckeyes as Illinois several times and later said it would be a “tremendous challenge going on the road to Big House” when he meant Ohio State’s “Horseshoe.”

he’s a 🤡 …plus a shitty human being devoid of morals . That also works against you

See this racist shit???????

Penn State QB, at worst second best QB in the conference,
is hurt, and it costs them two games on the ROAD...but
that's all Franklin???

WHY THE RACISM????

Franklin SHOULD take the USC job because he won't have to
do with ACTUAL Klan members in State College calling for his
head every week when be built a TOP 10 COLLEGE PROGRAM after
it was broken

Take him and his Black wife and move to LA where people
don't want to lynch Blacks everywhere

Penn State can do better than James Franklin (he had a couple good years but he's overrated like most big ten fans would tell you, but at least he isnt Harbaugh ($$$) i guess

You should be caping this hard for Mel Tucker. Who is way more deserving of those blueblood jobs (but I hope he stays in East Lansing)

I love how you ignored his extremely troubling past at Vanderbilt.

You dodged that like mayweather.

How can PSU "do better?"

How much better is PSU supposed to be?

And as far as "troubling past," tOSU has easily
the largest piece of shit coaches of any school
in the conference

This isn't debatable

Tomlin is an incredible coach and the thing that people always overlook with him is that his players play for him out of respect more so than out of fear. Everyone that has played for him almost to a person has had nothing but great things to say about him as far as how he treats MEN.

Tomlin's accomplishments are noteworthy but this is not a division that is consistently tough. During his tenure the Browns and Bengals have been two of the worst teams in the league. That may be changing but we are talking about the last 15 years.

You can throw the records out for these matchups most of the time. These teams beat the hell out of each other. They are all built to play a certain style of football because of The Steelers and The Ravens. The Bengals had a winning record for almost half of the last decade and won the division in 2015.

I do watch AFC North football. Lots of divisions beat the hell out of each other. The exact same thing could be said about the AFC West or NFC West or the NFC East or really whoever.

Look at Rothelisberger's record vs the Browns and tell me this with a straight face.

The Steelers and the Ravens have had a great rivalry and have both been contenders. The rest of the division have been perennial doormats for most of Tomlin's tenure.

NFL division conversations get funny, some people said some of Belichick & Brady’s run was due to playing the the AFC East, none of the other AFC divisions have never really had more than 2 teams good at 1 team

when the Pats/Brady had a better overall record against non-AFCE teams than he did against AFCE. And that's despite constantly playing the toughest possible schedule due to finishing in 1st place every year.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh have always been a clear cut above the Browns and Bengals.

simply making the playoffs isnt the barometer for having a good team

Saying "simply making the playoffs" doesn't represent being a good team is really really dumb. Making the playoffs is absolutely a representation of being good in the NFL. This isn't the NBA or MLB with 80 or 100+ games. Its a 16 (now 17) game season where you can easily miss out just by having a couple off games.

Making the playoffs and NEVER advancing past the first round is good?

Whatever man. You're not gonna convince me that the Bengals were some bastion of excellence under Marvin Lewis

edit, lets see how Burrow does this year.

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/teams.nsf/histories/bengals

the AFC north... like every other division in the nfl is made up of one or two good teams and two bad ones.

and they're all physical blah blah. It's cold AFC north cities so you talk up that angle. but it's the nfl. every team is physical even the bad ones lol.

lol, only 2% of NCAA players make it to the pros, Einstein. There is no easy / hard division.

not a complicated concept.

let the hate go.. lol. No one is trying to inflate Tomlin’s resume, its teflon regarding his winning percentage.

a white successful professional coach that hasn't coached at the college level in 20+ years is not going to be asked about college jobs. Pete Carroll had been fired from 2 pro jobs and was never going to be offered another pro head coaching job if he didn't go rebuild his coaching image at USC.

Somebody says something provocative... whether true or not
Then every subsequent story sites that initial source, whether true or not

From what I can tell, the initial sources were former NFL players and alumni

and fuck him for trying to create a story just to get some eyes on the LSU gig.

and Ryan fake apologized because he knew he wasn’t doing this with Tomlin’s best interest in mind, this was simply Clark trying to get LSU some shine and also possibly get a coaching job at the same time. “I’d quit and work on Tomlin’s staff”

and while Ryan isn’t racist what he did was racially insensitive. Never should he ever suggest a Black coach with 15 years of experience and secure NFL gig for a fucking college gig simply for personal gain.

Nope . I’d never make this argument for your or my alma mater or Alabama or Georgia or Texas or Clemson.

Tomlin is absolutely right about him having a nice gig though. Eleven point 5 million a year and the job security is better in Pittsburgh bc the standards are way lower.

Lincoln Riley will get fired if he doesn’t win a playoff game in 6 seasons.

around the country to po-dunk towns and beg high schoolers and their families when at the pro level you just show up at the practice facility and coach whomever your GM signs, especially when you've been doing that for 20+ years. Its 2 completely different jobs, more people want to go from the college level to the pro level instead of the other way around. Pete Carroll was a unique and rare situation.

It’s not like recruiting at other schools located in small midwestern or southern states .

Again USC is different from the typical college football program .

you still have to get out on the recruiting trail every offseason, there is no such thing with the pros, you're off just like the players. You don't have to convince anybody to come play for you, once your GM get's their signature on a contract you just have to show up and run practice.

Like I said its 2 completely different jobs, its not much simpler than that lol

I think it's WAY easier to recruit to USC now especially if youre a 5* prospect with a million followers on social media, and youre playing in Los Angeles

agreed, but USC is the only NCAA job that is anywhere close in comparison in terms of luster and pay, and razzle / dazzle.

if USC had a competent coach in place, CJ Stroud is not in Columbus but playing on Figueroa instead. I can almost guarantee that.

edit I am DONE talking up the god damn trojans. excuse me while i throw up.

I’m pretty familiar with the cfb landscape and how recruiting operates

USC is just as elite as the Steelers job, because it’s higher pressure than the Steelers .

You yourself said Tomlin would never be fired .

>this isn’t the early 2000’s.

>Times have changed.

Yes , they have to USCs advantage .

They’ve changed in the NFL too. You can see the growing influence of college football.

Thank god bc NFL football still boring as fuck but at least it has its moments

That 9ers Cowboys game was amateur hour 🤡 shit

Yea like USC .

Sports are cyclical. Everyone knows this. Steelers used to win in the playoffs. Now they don't. Maybe USC will win. Maybe they wont. I dont care.

>and lmao at USC still being elite.

I think any job in Los Angeles that pays 10.5 to 11.5 million a year is elite. Whether its picking up garbage or delivering mail or clearning toilets or holding a clipboard on Figueroa every Saturday with 80k ppl cheering.

>Yeah.. they have been killing it lately and wow at all those

That's on the administration. It was a malnourished golden goose.

Maybe, maybe not. All I know is they pay like an NFL team $$$$$

>USC had to give dude a fucking jet to come to USC.. lol.

Every coach in D1 at all the big traditional schools has access to a private jet. Do you think they search for tickets w Southwest JetBlue and Spirit airlines?

6 years isn’t enough ? LOL

In 4 years his freshman recruits will be seniors or redshirt juniors , if he doesn’t win a playoff game by then in the easiest conference in the country he absolutely deserves to be fired.

The team is consistently in the playoffs... some years they overperform, others they under perform. But that fan base gets to experience playoff excitement almost every year. Half the league would KILL for that bc it's actually very hard.

Just look at Washington to see that what happens on the field directly impacts fan loyalty and ticket sales. Folks were passing season tickets down like family heirlooms, now you can't give them tickets away.

So that's the bar... top 4 team within 6 years? Is that even realistic? How?

Yes, and they do kill for that, hence the constant churn of coaches, Black ones feeling the brunt of it. That is why Tomlin is extremely fortunate to have the ownership group he has.

it's absolutely realistic. In college there is no draft, you assemble the players you want. and you have 4 years to do it with a bevy of resources. it's a results-oriented business and it's not like the cupboard is bare. A handful of recruits from Oklahoma have already switched or are transferring to USC.

we know the FO isn’t going to move a player like Ben. He shit the bed in the playoffs the last few trips but we will be back real soon.

The real problem (not really a problem) is even when we are bad we are a .500 team. We had no business in the playoffs this year but somehow we found a way to back in.

Good experience for the youngins on the team.

it's just not a NC or bust type of program. never has been.

it's not the same cutthroat culture like it is down south or midwest. fan investment isnt nearly as high. put an entertaining program on the field and stay out of trouble off of it and riley can stay there for as long as he likes.

i think he'll do well (the only direction to go is up) but im highly skeptical that he's going to field teams that can seriously compete for a title.

about the same re-hashed points.

Sean McVay, Zac Taylor and Matt LaFluer don't give rat's ass about any college job and won't be asked about them while they currently have a job. Kliff Kingsbury just came from college but is not trying to go back now that he's had success at the pro level. Same for people like Brandon Staley.

mike tomlin got asked a few questions about a few reporters about a job in Los Angeles that pays 10.5-11.5 million dollars a year (we'll never know bc USC is a private school exempt from FOIA requests) with and a pension/severance package you or I will never ever see, despite not having produced a single playoff win in 6 years now.

You dont care about Black coaches, you only care about the ones that coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

(If we're just making up shit about the other person, I can play that game too. See how that works?)

who says that shit about white head coaches who had the same issues with the same player?

Tomlin got All Pro production from AB for 8 years.

When other head coaches have a murderer or a player wild out no one says the coach lost the locker room or lost control.

Just another example of ignorance on your part.

and of course you wouldn’t see making the playoffs with a 40 year old QB who was 60 in football years to the playoffs as an accomplishment because you have such high standards as a fan.

That shit aint happening. A white coach with Tomlin’s resume is an established NFL HC.

End of story.

The only time people ever flirt with the idea of an NFL head coach going to college is if he recently came from college.

and that is what you guys are “intentionally” missing.

Culley was setup to faiL given that depleted roster and QB controversy
Still scapegoated and fiyah'd
Dusty was brought in to bring some integrity to the Stros after the cheating scandal
Silas is in a similar situation as Culley; depleted roster

It looks like progress...but is it...is it really?

NFL back to 1 black HC...1st ballot HOFer and SB champ

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

and why shitty white coaches who were recently fired are already being mentioned for new openings..

all while constantly asking why GOOD Black coaches are fired prematurely

and non Black folk in here really question why Black folk see racism when Tomlin is asked if will leave an NFL gig for college when he is the only one left standing this offseason?

smh..
