Lavine and Lonzo look very comfortable together and both already know how to find DeRozan in his spots. Caruso doing his thing too. Vucevic will get his shots too....if the front court can play defense half as good as Ball and Lavine....wooosa. They definitely look like a playoff team.

But then again, it was the Cavs.
Definitely promising, but I need larger sample size.

Ball and Caruso are immediately huge upgrades defensively for the Bulls.
And when Patrick Williams returns, I think they'll be ok.
And look, they don't need to be a top 5 defense.
An average defense will get this team to a 6th seed easy.

he's gets numbers offensively but he's a liability on D, that's why Orlando was sorry despite his "all-star" status

The one thing these two pre-season games have showed me is that
high IQ players on defense make a huge difference.
The Bulls haven't had that in a long time.
Both Caruso and Ball make Vucevic's life so much easier.
Caruso is so good at placing himself in a position to cover
two players it makes it so Vucevic doesn't have to drop back so quickly.

I'll be curious to see how it looks in a month.

not as bad as people think on that end.

and with zach's defense improving after a summer of pop using him as a defensive stopper paired with lonzo, caruso (who will probably close most games), and a promising patrick williams (who has all the physical tools to be really good) i think we can be better than average.

With Lonzo and Lavine, they really are going to be a tough matchup for other teams...two 6'7" athletic pitbulls and then you have DeRozan on the wing.

I am impressed.

Looks like my Knicks will have their hands full when we meet y'all.

It's 100% possible to have your one squad and still root for other players/teams.

Hell, sometimes it's just a matter of enjoying how a particular team plays. As a Lakers fan, I loved the Kings, unless they were playing the Lakers. That was a great team that played a beautiful brand of basketball.

There are plenty of players and teams I want to succeed, just not over/against the Lakers.

Right now I love the Knicks, Pels, and Bulls, and want to see each of them do well- until they play the Lakers, at which time they can fuck off over the course of 48 minutes plus timeouts and commercial breaks.

16. "I think a lot of it comes down to Zach on defense. "
In response to Reply # 8

We know Lonzo is a great team defender, not really a consistent stopper in iso but deadly in passing lanes and good with his anticipation. We know Caruso can genuinely be a stopper on the perimeter on reasonably sized guards. We know Williams will continue to be improve. That's a really nice start.

We also know DeRozan will almost certainly continue to be a bad-to-very-bad defender. And we know Vucevic will be a bad defender in space, although I can't imagine Billy would ever force him to switch, so it probably won't matter in the regular season as much, and he can probably be serviceable (and I think there's a chance Billy could straight up use Williams as a small ball 5 and switch everything at game's end against a lot of teams that may require switching).

So I think the overall regular season defensive ranking could definitely end up Top 10, provided that Zach stays locked in the way he looked this summer. It's going to be a lot harder to lock in like that during a random game against some middling NBA team on a Wednesday night vs. the Olympics, but if he takes that step and pushes to be a borderline All-Defense type of defender (which he absolutely has the physical tools to be), then the Bulls could honestly end up Top 8, maybe Top 6 defensively. The defense isn't really a concern for me.

Caruso was a solid defender on the Lakers I wouldn't call him a "stopper" lol

that's the the thing, a lot of teams in the league play "small ball" more than half the team and don't play a big man on the floor, Vuc will be exposed

I don't know how common it is for someone to go from not really caring about defense to "All-Defense type of defender" in year 7

Shitty organizations, coaches and teammates play a huge role in overall player development or lack thereof. After seven or whatever years in the league Zach finally has proper stability from the top down. I’m like 99.97% positive that will show through in his overall game.

The "Zach is bad on defense" meme was true at the start (and definitely in college) but has faded with time-- and then at the Olympics he was absolutely on one defensively. I expect him to ride that wave, and further improvement should be expected in general given his last season or two. I wasn't saying I necessarily expect him to be All-Defense this season-- I just think he's got a really high ceiling if he continues to grow. He was the best perimeter defender for Team USA at the Olympics this summer. That says a lot about where he can go this year imo.

>Caruso was a solid defender on the Lakers I wouldn't call him
>a "stopper" lol

When you're looking at guard on-ball defenders in the NBA, he's absolutely one of the best. As I said, if he's guarding guards of a reasonable size, I expect him to be one of the best 1v1 defenders in the NBA this year. You can't put him on Giannis or Durant or anything, but if you think an on-ball defender of Caruso's caliber won't have impact on the Bulls... I just flat disagree, lol.

>that's the the thing, a lot of teams in the league play "small
>ball" more than half the team and don't play a big man on the
>floor, Vuc will be exposed

I'm not sure this is true in the regular season. You see a lot of teams play with a center on the floor regular season. Where Vuc will be of significantly decreased value is 4th quarter in playoff games, where, yes, switchability is everything. But that shouldn't be the Bulls' first concern right now. Their first concern should be win enough games to talk about the playoffs-- and continue to bring Patrick Williams along. Because if Williams comes along as he should, then they'll just bench Vuc during any small ball run in the playoff and play Williams at the 5.

In response to Reply # 5

not really because i thought they would be great or even good at the start. it was nice to have a fresh start and approach. a lot of young players that i was hoping would develop through the season. it was a rough season though. the trades at the deadline didnt really push them forward. not a lot of development for key young players. towards the end i saw that they werent going anywhere last year and hopefully the offseason would bring the needed change.

i did not expect this much change though. on paper and through the first few preseason games i am excited again. i do expect some struggles and i do think there are areas where they will need to improve (another trade) to be serious contenders. i do think it should be fun to watch for the most part.

definitely think im getting team pass again.

hopefully while his wheels heal he been getting up shots on shots on shots and has a more fluid jumper.

he will eat off of slip screens and oops from dray and steph driving and throwing the lob while everybody else is playing the passing lanes to the shooters parked on the perimeter.

that's lowkey dray's way of scoring, but getting other dudes to score.

but frfr, he better get a fucking serviceable jumper this year (giannis got one, why can't you???). 10 ppg, draymond, that's all we asking for.

wiggins need to just not turn into harrison barnes and i'll be happy. if he do 'last year wiggins' that will be more than enough. but i think he can do more.

best case is like the early days when they were blowing teams out and the bench was playing big minutes. if you got poole (eventually), iggy, wiseman and kuminga and one of the shooters on the court??? there's gonna be so many dunks and fast breaks and they gonna wear out second units.

granted it was preseason, but they were hanging w/ lakers' big 3. that depth (personnel combined w/ their playing style) should end up being a plus against most teams. which gives them minutes, which means kerr can rest stars in season and in key stretches of big games, which has been kind of a hidden superpower.

i'm hyped for the season.

peace & blessings,

still building. he has had far more highlights than i'm accustomed to in preseason.

otto p & bjelly looking like some nice vet min pickups.

even in their dynastic run, dubs second unit was full of cats who would surprise you if they made a 3.

livingston kept it moving w/ the impeccable taper and midrange game, but not a lot of deep balls. just great defense, good ball movement, and more off the drive.

but w/ all these cats (and i'm including an improved damian lee, and assuming JTA did his summer homework and will be better from the arc).

steph avg'd 32 points last year being dead last in spacing for any top scorer. he gonna have space-space-space-space this year.

Outside of the work he must have put in, I wonder if winning the championship gave him more confidence to be willing to put that on display without fear of failing or looking badly.

I wouldn't have never seen him being capable to creative his own shot like that based on how stiff and robotic his jumpers were before hand.

I wonder if other players on the Bucks will take notice and improve like he did.

Him improving so drastically will also make things much easier for Middleton since opposing teams will have to do more to contain Giannis in the midrange.

dont be surprised if that whole nucleus is broken up soon and they do a total rebuild with or without Anthony Edwards, everyone will be on the block by christmas if they arent at least 6 or 7 seed status

I know the West is stacked and in no way am I implying that Minnesota will contend for the Western Conference Finals... but a healthy Minnesota team with KAT, Anthony Edwards, and Russell could be something.

They'd have to beat out Portland or New Orleans to get that #7 spot. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic... lol

my wife doesn’t watch basketball, but knows who he is, unfortunately because of his story with Covid. Yesterday we were watching some older episodes of Ridiculousness and he was on there and his mom and dad were in the audience. At one point, Rob asked KAT if his parents were making him move out cuz he was making money…they flashed to his folks and his mother was shaking her head, no. Then KAT was like, that’s a Dominican mother, you can’t never move out. Me and my wife both teared up. I hope he and his pops are well.

as hell. Westbrook will never change. Preseason is preseason, but it
does give some signs on what a team is going to be.

He can’t go a game without committing stupid TOs, and is useless
off the ball. So that means he has to be the point, which is
stupid.

Lakers’ TO are going to be astronomical.

Preseason is preseason,
>but it
>does give some signs on what a team is going to be.

Did you offer the same critique for the 1-4 Nuggets or the 1-3 Champion Bucks this preseason?

So we think the Bucks are really a .333 winning % team because the pre-season is giving us signs of what they're going to be?

c'mon.

Lakers are about to conduct a monstrous chemistry project, for sure. It's not really fair to judge how good (or bad) this team will be until they've played together for at least 15-20 games. Let's revisit this then. We haven't even seen them playing together at full-strength over the course of a full game yet and you've already got it figured out.

Jordan
AD
Bron
Bazemore
Westbrook

Does that spell championship, or even a number 3 seed ?

That backcourt will be doo-doo offensively and defensively,
and Jordan at the 5? He was so garbage last year, Nash
went small win Griffin/ Green and even Claxton ate his minutes.

Let’s be honest here.

I forget the last time I'd try to bet him something, and he said, "no, sports gambling is dumb, there's so much variance, etc."

I, of course, pointed out that I'm willing to make this bet despite the variance. AD could get hurt. Bron could get hurt. All these things can happen. There's variance in every aspect of every sport. You only use the variance excuse if you don't actually mean what you're saying.

I'm still willing to put money down on a Top 3 seed for the Lakers. Because I know, and we all know, that it's far, far more likely to happen than he's claiming it is.

But he doesn't want to put money where his mouth is. Fair enough. Maybe he doesn't have the money or is saving for something in the real world, away from a sports board. I get that, I've not gambled for those reasons before. If he doesn't want to bet money, I'd do an avatar/OKP sig bet instead. But I'm guessing he won't do that either.

Because he knows he's just talking shit and the Lakers are of course going to be a Top 3 seed this year. Maybe they dip out of the top 3 if AD, Bron, and Russ combine for, like, under 150 games. But I'd still bet on it, cuz that's, like, the only scenario in which it doesn't happen.

You want it to be one way, but it’s another.

Street bets are a waste of time and meaningless in this day and age.

Why would I lay a bet with you, when I can simply lay that same bet
on DraftKings and get paid instantly into my account?

That’s like going out whistling for a yellow cab when I can Uber.

We talked about this already.

I don’t know you. You don’t know me.

And last year I said the lakers were wack and wouldn’t win, and they didn’t,
and I’m saying the same thing this year. It’s a prediction. That’s what people
do when talking about sports.

Stop making all this so trivial.

Any sports book in the world will gladly give you odds if you say "I want to bet the Lakers don't finish Top 3 in the West." Any sports book anywhere. Go take that Uber.

I've made bets on here before. Won and lost. With strangers. They've paid me when I won, I've paid them when I've lost. It's an opportunity for you to win free money from me if you actually believe in your prediction the way I believe in mine. And it's a fun way to engage with members of a message board community.

But you won't take the cab or the Uber. You're scared of getting into a car. It's fine. Everyone sees it.

You're not asking DJ and Bazemore (or whoever the starting 2 will be) to do anything but be moderately productive and active for 18-22 minutes per game. DJ is a good fit in LA. Lakers are big and long again - and I think DJ is an upgrade from JaVale -- and that's the only kind of role DJ will need to play.

There are so many interchangeable parts to this Laker team. Malik Monk and Kendrick Nunn (currently injured) could also start. Dwight could start. Melo has started a couple of games in pre-season and has played well. There was talk of Ariza starting before he got injured. Dwight & Rondo come off the bench to provide immediate impact as well. And you've still got THT & Ellington (who could also start) on top of that. They've got about 4 guys coming off the bench who are high-quality 6-men on any team. Even Reaves might be able to give some quality minutes. They've got a lot of quality, interchangeable options.

>That backcourt will be doo-doo offensively and defensively,
>and Jordan at the 5? He was so garbage last year, Nash

Lakers play a diff. brand of basketball and are big/physical again like they were w/ the '20 Championship squad, but arguably a better version of that. They're built for the playoffs when the game slows down and more half-court sets get run. Formula can work for them - even if it didn't work for the Nets.

Lakers could put a jersey on shit, and they would still be penciled in to
win a championship.

That is a poorly constructed team and anyone with eyes can
see that.

They have a lot of players with poor IQs and who are streaky at best.

Monk ( was wack with the hornets, streaky shooter)
Jordan ( slow, tires quickly and was never really a rim
protector)
Nunn (Dennis 2.0)
Westbrook ( isn’t clutch, can’t shoot, and doesn’t make teams better)
Bazemore ( journeymen)

This team is wacker than last year’s

Which should be expected with so much personnel change
...but...
That may leave them with too much ground to make up
Utah and Den look like locks for 1&2
LAC, PHX possibly GSW... could finish ahead of them too

No chips won in preseason
But I think it's safe to say it's going to take some time to figure out
...and IMO...
That leaves them out of the top 4 in the WC.

Dude is a motor on both sides of the ball. Bull MGT have my forgiveness
for that bull crap Vucevic desperation trade.

Our backcourt defense has definitely been upgraded, but our interior defense
is still weak as shit. That’s why moving Gafford was a big head scratcher.
Pat Williams is shaping into a solid two way player, but he is no rim
protector at the 4.

The main focus should be to improve our interior defense ASAP.

with Mobley and Allen. The Pacers have Sabonis and Myles.
And Milwaukee has Giannis, Portis, and Lopez.

That has to be addressed immediately, because that’s our main weakness
right now. Teams in our division have the better interior. It could pose a huge
problem.

Bulls will go small a lot to compensate, with a focus on being the faster
team and force teams to go small to keep up.

We should be one of the highest scoring teams in the league this year,
and I project a 5-8 seeding.

But again, after seeing what the bulls did in this offseason, that Vucevic
move was dumb as hell and we lost an outstanding rim protector because
of it.

Vucevic was the first piece.
Karnisovas and Eversly said as much when they traded for him.
Ball, Caruso & Derozan probably don't sign here w/o LaVine and Vucevic.

to get people to come here. That was Billy Donovan.
Ball and Dorozan don’t come here if Billy isn’t here.
Going after Ball was already in play before getting
Vucevic. That was the plan, because they expected
to get ball befor the trade deadline last season.

Donovan is a guard friendly coach, and all of his systems are
guard heavy. That’s why we have a guard heavy team now.

In hindsight no way would they ship Gafford. He had 4 blocks
today in first half.

For what we gave up, and how our interior defense plummeted,
it was not a good trade....unless he makes a rapid jump in
his defensive ability.

But our offensive fire power may be able to make up for it.

Caruso - 2 steals ( Kojack! Thanks lakers)!
Williams - 2 steals

We are going to lead the league in steals this year.

Man, Ball’s backcourt defense to stay with his man through screens
is a thing of beauty. Caruso does it to.

Ayo, Ball, Caruso, White, Lavine,
Thomas, Dotson, Green. Billy is going to have his hands full
giving guards minutes. But its a good problem to have.

Jackson killed us from three, our forwards got lost at times trying
to help with covering the paint, leaving Jackson open for 3....

In response to Reply # 101

We all know that billionaires write checks on whether they want to or not. That's a given, lol. It's also the employee's right to ask the billionaire for what the employee feels is a reasonable, market-value contract. There's a 100% chance Ayton gets a max deal on the open market. So if Sarver wants Ayton, he'll have to pay max. That's not bullying. That's reasonable negotiation. Sarver doesn't have to pay him the max, but he absolutely knows that if he doesn't, Ayton's gone.

And if Sarver wants to remain a title contender, it behooves him to have a content and motivated Ayton. Phoenix unlocked a new gear last season *specifically* when Ayton became a more consistent player on both ends. The center position was also rooooough when Ayton was off the floor, because they had to play Kaminsky and/or Saric. Yes, they brought in McGee in the offseason... but dude's 33, how much can he really provide? They still need Ayton giving it his all 30-32 MPG to contend for a Top 3 seed in the West and a title going forward. Unless there's some other better center option that Sarver can somehow seduce to come to Phoenix... but I've no clue where that comes from.

Sarver's always been a notoriously cheap owner-- but once he coughed up the money to give Chris Paul everything he wanted, it seemed like he was conceding, "okay, I'll pay the luxury tax for the first time in over a decade, because I want to be a title contender for the next couple of years." If they lose Ayton in restricted free agency next season, I... can't imagine that continues.

So then they're paying all that money to CP3... for, like, perennial 5-6 seed status. On some Lillard-era Blazers shit. Woof.

Nice little pick-up by LA. He was very productive for the Lakers (before he refused to go to the bubble) - and given the multiple injuries to their guards - at the very least he'll be serviceable in the short-term. Great pick-up.

Difference is, of course, Houston was instantly in tank mode without Harden. Philly's probably still a Top 5 seed without Simmons. So they can just sit his ass if he tries to be goofy.

Unfortunately, again, Simmons thinks he has way more power in this situation than he does. You can't pull this shit with an experienced coach, a playoff team regardless of your presence, and the one GM in this league who absolutely gives less of a fuck than any other, lol.

If Simmons thinks he can show up and just fuck around, he won't play-- and he genuinely could keep getting suspended.

In response to Reply # 113

… he’s doing the exact wrong things. By tanking his own trade value, he’s making Philly that much more inclined to keep suspending him and fining the shit out of him, because they absolutely won’t deal him for peanuts. Woj literally jus tweeted as much.

The more Simmons digs in his heels and acts this way, the less likely he is to be dealt before the deadline. He’s trying to strong-arm guys like Rivers, Morey, and Embiid, lmao. It’s an impressively bad misplay on his part.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
