"Urb bailing on J'ville for USC?"

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32213751/urban-meyer-says-there-no-chance-leave-jacksonville-jaguars-usc-trojans-job

Urban Meyer says there's "no chance' he'd leave Jacksonville Jaguars for USC Trojans job

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Scratch Urban Meyer off the list of candidates for the USC football job.

The Jacksonville Jaguars coach said Wednesday that there was "no chance" he'd leave the NFL for that job, which came open when USC fired coach Clay Helton on Monday.

"I'm here and committed to try to build an organization," Meyer said.

Earlier this month Meyer had also said he doesn't miss recruiting.

Meyer is in his first season with the Jaguars after winning three national championships and compiling a 187-32 college coaching record during stints at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. He won two of those titles (2006, 2008) with the Gators, whom he led to a 65-15 record in six seasons. He also led the Buckeyes to the 2014 national title and compiled an 83-9 record in seven seasons in Columbus, Ohio.

Meyer's tenure with the Jaguars has gotten off to a bit of an uneven start. He hired former Iowa strength and conditioning coordinator Chris Doyle, who had reached a separation agreement with Iowa after being accused of making racist comments and belittling players. Doyle resigned the following day.

Meyer also had No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence splitting first-team practice reps with Gardner Minshew throughout the majority of training camp, only naming Lawrence the starting quarterback between the second and third preseason games. Minshew was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles before the start of the season.

The Jaguars looked sloppy in their season-opening 37-21 loss in Houston on Sunday. They had six dropped passes, used two timeouts in the first quarter to avoid delay-of-game penalties, had multiple illegal formation penalties, and also were penalized for having 12 men in the huddle. Lawrence also threw three interceptions.

Meyer dismissed critics of his body language on the sideline during the loss and reiterated that he's committed to turning around a franchise that has lost 10 or more games in nine of the past 10 seasons. He also said he believes the team can win and likes what he has seen in the locker room.

"I don't want to ever fall into that trap of saying, this is four-year plan, three-year plan," Meyer said. "That's not fair to players. This is a one-game plan and then we'll worry about the next game. There's some guys that played a lot of football in that locker room and they deserve our very best, and that's what it is. Other than a bruised soul that we all have right now, we're still swinging away, and like I said, you'd probably see a little different look on my face if I had bad guys. That's not the case at all."

2-3yrs of losing on the Jags with his name popping up a the top of every major college opening?

He’s won in the midwest and the south, the west is the natural progression unless the ND job opens up, or he’s called back to clean up the mess at tOSU which I know some folks are praying for

(Basketball program is in shambles bc we can’t get nba talent anymore , only guys like Duane Washington and EJ Liddell)

but there’s no mess at OSU, just a bad defensive coordinator that will get the chop soon

builder and figurehead. He’s an outstanding recruiter as well, which is obviously paramount to success in college football. However, he leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to in-game adjustments, time management, and developing creative game plans, etc. I think the win against Wisconsin was his first road win vs a top 15 team ever. Prior to that, I think he had only 1 road win vs a top 25 team.

Again, as a PSU fan I’m thankful to have a guy like Franklin. I appreciate him more than most PSU fans, but can admit he has blind spots.

In response to Reply # 62

If you want honest, open discourse I’m here. I’m not going to engage further if you don’t bother to read my post, let alone watch the actual games Franklin has coached.

All the things I credited Franklin for do require a great deal of intelligence. To maintain the level of respect and success he has while dealing with lots of racists from central PA is remarkable. Being the figurehead does require a ton of intelligence. He’s not known as a great game manager and his game planning for big games - especially road games - has left a bit to be desired. He’s got blind spots like most other coaches. That’s all I’m pointing out.

Spencer Hall - a well respected CFB analyst and regular on Bomani Jones podcast - has called Franklin overrated and has provided some brutal analysis of Franklin’s coaching blunders.

I coached (at the high school and junior high levels) for many years. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, but I definitely was not adept at diagnosing plays on the fly and making in game adjustments. I relied more on pregame preparation and in-game motivation. My close friend, who definitely was no more intelligent than me, had a knack for diagnosing mismatches and making in-game adjustments. That was his forte. But he wasn’t as adept at running a team, communicating to parents, organizational structure, etc. Intelligence as it relates to coaching comes in many forms.

As a PSU fan, I’m thankful for Franklin and realize there aren’t more talented coaches walking through the door. As I stated before, I’m happy he’s the coach. Franklin gets a lot of unwarranted hate due to his race. Trust me, I know that as a lifelong resident in south central PA. Still, I’m not going to give him a pass for certain aspects of the job he doesn’t excel at.

Do I just never speak on PSU football again? Even if I agree, you’ve just effectively railroaded the discussion.

I think I pretty clearly illustrated my point about Franklin above. I could actually provide a lot more analysis, but it’s a waste of keystrokes if certain posters are only concerned with trying to find the worst in others and unwilling to actually engage in discussion.

there are people in here trying to talk football and making good posts but are getting shouted down and chased off by malcontents and professional trolls.

me and you go back a ways as rival fans but I think we've always been mature enough and sane enough to respect the fact that we're people first and foremost. and that neither of us are some sort of physical representation of the program that we've rooted for since we were little kids.

I got O_E telling me that I can't speak on a rape cover-up because he's upset about Maurice Clarett from 2002(!) Like that's some real detached from reality shit. It's been 20 years man, let it go.

Likewise I think at this point we're all pretty familiar with what happened at PSU. It's not relevant to this discussion.

You said his recruiting wasn't good

That's factually wrong, they are having among the best

As for all that shit about "adjustments"...well yeah,

And this is why you're deranged. I am not 'TOSU'. I am not a university, a football team, or a football coach. You take this shit to an extreme and disturbing level. I represent myself only and I can speak on whatever I damn well please.

You've been following me around and harassing me with this weirdo shit for nearly 20 years now. In threads that have absolutely nothing to do with osu (such as this one). I'm done. Go away. You're not getting any further responses from me.

yes there is prestige and an elite recruiting base, but it doesn't strike me as a place where you can get whatever you want to win

most SEC schools and the top programs in other P5 conferences have facilities that blow theirs out of the water

the "living and playing in LA" is so overblown to me; reminds me of when people said Nick Saban would enjoy all the trendy restaurants in Austin more -- these guys have no lives outside football

if yo are already an elite HC, USC only makes sense to me if you have roots on the West Coast

I can see being in LA an advantage with NIL now in place.

But for coaches, living in La isn’t a big draw.

As far as facilities being below SEC/Texas/OSU; I agree with you there but it only takes one big time winning coach to change that. If a coach wins at USC and wants those facilities, he will get them from the donors.

they redid their football facility a few years ago, it's actually very nice but very small.

their facilities during the carrol years were pretty funny.

Carroll didn't seem to have a problem getting top recruits from all over to come to USC

very true but carrol was coaching in a different era and operating with essentially zero institutional oversight. but he was also just a legendary recruiter.

the U was the same way in the early 2000's. laughable facilities but stacked rosters. didn't matter.

In cities like Los Angeles and Miami you don't need impressive facilities to get a kid to come there.

there's obviously a lot more to recruiting then proximity to glamour locales.

SC's and miami's advantage is more about being centrally located in fertile recruiting grounds rather than SC being a 30 min drive w/o traffic to beverly hills.

the idea that only rural schools need nice facilities to land recruits doesn't make any logical sense nor is it supported by anything that's happening in recruiting in 2021.

because without them its just another dry ass college town with nothing to do.

Most kids from SoCal and FL would rather star at schools close to home but local competition pushes them elsewhere.

top players go where they win games, get maximum exposure, and get sent to the league. none of this other stuff matters.

I take it you've never actually been to any of these places.

so all of the 5 star qb's from LA who are now starting at clemson, bama, and osu left LA because the competition was too stiff at local schools? what are you talking about?

there are a grand total of 3 football programs in LA/Miami and all of them have brand new facilities and all of them have sucked for the majority of this century. living in proximity to a major city is pretty low on the list of requirements for recruits.

Is Miami the only college program in Florida? Is USC the only program in California?

18 of the top 25 left, including 7 of the top 10. A combined 10 of the top 25 recruits from Florida went to Clemson and Alabama. Only 3 players in Florida's Top 25 chose a school that wasn't Miami, so they weren't dodging Miami due to in-state competition.

13 of the Top 25 from California stayed in state, so better retention there, and 10 of them did choose USC... but that means of the 12 recruits USC missed on, only 3 were from in-state competition. And of the Top 10 recruits in California, the creme de la creme, only 4 chose to stay in-state (and they all went to USC, none went to other in-state competition.

You said the reason traditional powerhouses like USC and Miami are losing recruits is because they face in-state competition. But they're not. They're losing recruits to out-of-state competition.

In 2020, two of the top 20 recruits in California stayed in-state. 9 of the top 20 in Florida stayed in-state (only 3 of the top 10).

In 2019, four of the top 20 recruits in California stayed in-state. 8 of the top 20 in Florida stayed in-state (only 4 of the top 10).

In 2018, nine of the top 20 recruits in California stayed in-state. 7 of the top 20 in Florida stayed in-state (only 1 of the top 10).

Like... this isn't a brand new trend. And yes, when the big California and Florida power schools were great, the recruiting in-state was better. But that's the whole point, really-- we can say "kids want to play in these beautiful states!" all we want, but end of the day, what most of the top recruits really give the biggest shit about is playing for a successful program.

And I thought I'd provide facts for interested parties. Yes, schools compete with other in-state schools-- no one really said otherwise. But, and far more to the point, when it comes to the most important recruits, they compete with the elite out-of-state schools. Miami isn't missing on recruits because of Florida and FSU. They're missing out on recruits because of Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, etc.

I actually think NIL has a pretty good chance of *helping* many schools keep their elite recruits in-state, because I think there's potentially higher market value and visibility if, say, the best Arkansas HS player becomes the face of Arkansas football rather than another guy waiting his turn to shine at Alabama. But you're right that we don't really have any clue. There's also a decent shot random universities with some billionaire attached suddenly get a couple of program-changing recruits just based on the new and creative options colleges have for bag dropping. It's a whole new ballgame in a lot of ways.

"facilities" weren't as important to pull in top recruits at schools like USC and Miami.

I thought most people here agreed with that.

Somehow it turned personal then with random people jumping in with random info and I remembered that I don't really care about CFB enough to be doing all this typing.

I think Urban will be a failure in Jacksonville and he will have his pick of whatever top college is available when he is ready to leave. People that have studied this man's life for years know way more about that than I do.

they agreed with that but not the 'only rural schools need nice facilities' part

Oregon started the whole lavish facilities thing back in like 2006 which posed a big edge for them at the time. but then every other school in america copied and built nice facilities of their own so it kinda became a non issue.

>Somehow it turned personal then with random people jumping in

LOL. frank's been posting here for like 48 years I think he's entitled to jump in as he pleases. and his info was 100% pertinent to the discussion. west coast kids leaving the region is an interesting discussion, IMO.

I agree that urban's career in jacksonville will be a short one.

I enjoy seeing the buckeyes lose but why would you think they were avoiding it when the topic was questioning if Meyer would leave for USC?

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

'SC' is in the freakin thread title.

it's like you're seeking new and inventive ways to be loud, mad, and wrong.

>but whenever he's in
>the convo the osu faithful feel the need to run in and offer
>their opinion lol

so frank isn't allowed to comment with relevant info to the discussion, OSU fans aren't allowed to comment on your threads...what exactly is the point of you posting in the first place? maybe add a disclaimer to the bottom of your threads on who and what people can comment on so as not to hurt your juvenile ego?

you post a steady stream factually incorrect info, get mad when called out for being an idiot and then cop pleas about how you dont care about the topic at hand...yet cared enough to start a thread on it and probably 100+ threads on urban over the years. if there is anyone who is obsessed with urban and osu, it's you.

49. "Predicting where top recruits end up (ESPN+)"
In response to Reply # 0

(just wanted contribute something meaningful to this post since Ruth wants to just argue for the sake of arguing)

The college football season is well underway, and we are inching closer to the early signing period in December. It's only three months away, which means we will start to see a few more commitments from top prospects.

As official visits take place to see the game atmosphere on different campuses, recruits will start to have enough information to pick a school, and we are going to see three ESPN 300 recruits make their commitments over the next three to four weeks.

In this week's notebook, we will take a look at those announcements and predict where each recruit will go. We will also look at a top-15 recruit taking visits, the recruiting impact from USC firing Clay Helton, which teams helped themselves in recruiting this past weekend and some top performances from transfers and freshmen.

Recruit predictions
This isn't a comprehensive list of who will commit over the next few weeks, but these ESPN 300 recruits have already announced publicly when they will be making their commitment. Here's where we see them going.

RB George Pettaway
5-foot-11, 175 pounds
Suffolk, Virginia
ESPN 300 rank: 106

Top choices: Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State

Pettaway is announcing his commitment on Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. ET. He released his top four of Florida, North Carolina, Penn State and Oregon in August, cutting it down from 10. Pettaway had taken visits to Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, Penn State and a few others in June, and is now ready to make his decision.

He's the No. 8 running back in the class and had offers from some of the biggest programs in the country. Looking at some of the classes from the schools in his top list, Penn State already has two ESPN 300 running backs committed in Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton, Florida has ESPN 300 running back Terrance Gibbs, North Carolina has ESPN 300 running back Omarion Hampton committed, while Oregon does not yet have a top-300 commit at the position.

From those four, it seems as though North Carolina has the upper hand given his relationship with the coaches, and the Tar Heels could be in good position to land his commitment next week.

The pick: North Carolina

OT Elijah Pritchett
6-foot-6, 280 pounds
Columbus, Georgia
ESPN 300 rank: 103

Top choices: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, USC

3dCraig Haubert

What went wrong for Clay Helton at USC
5dKyle Bonagura

College football recruiting notebook: Big weekends for Ohio State and Michigan, NIL reaction and more
9dTom VanHaaren
Pritchett is massive tackle from Georgia, who initially had a top eight of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Kentucky, USC and Virginia Tech back in April, but recently cut it down to four.

Considering USC is in his top list and the Trojans just fired Helton, it doesn't seem likely he'll pick the Trojans. Even though he is from Georgia, there is a level of comfort and familiarity with Florida State.

Of the visits he took this summer, he took three trips to Florida State. He worked out at their big man camp and has seen quite a bit of campus. He is announcing his decision on Sept. 28, and if he chooses the Seminoles, he would give Florida State two ESPN 300 offensive linemen in the class, four ranked as four-stars.

The pick: Florida State

TE Jaleel Skinner
6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Greer, South Carolina
ESPN 300 rank: 64

Top choices: Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Texas

Skinner is the top-rated tight end in this class and a top-100 recruit. He released his top five after taking visits to some of his top schools in June. He went to Miami, Alabama and Texas, among a few others, then took his official visit to Florida State in the beginning of September.

Skinner will still take visits to Florida this weekend, Texas on Sept. 25 and Clemson on Oct. 2. He's going to announce his commitment on Oct. 9, so this one might be a little more difficult to predict. The Longhorns are making a push, but this could change over the next few weeks.

The pick: Texas

Arch Manning's busy October
Arch Manning is the No. 2 prospect and the top quarterback in the 2023 class. The son of Cooper Manning, and the nephew of Peyton and Eli, he has garnered quite a bit of attention from his ability on the field.

According to Cooper, Arch will be getting out on the road and taking visits over the next few weeks.

He will visit Georgia this weekend for the South Carolina game, Alabama on Oct. 2 when the Crimson Tide play Ole Miss, then Texas on Oct. 16 when the Longhorns play Oklahoma State.

Arch will also be on hand at Ole Miss on Oct. 23 to see his uncle, Eli, get his jersey retired and watch the game against LSU. Cooper said his son will also likely visit Clemson on Oct. 30 for the Florida State game.

He has a busy next few months, which will likely help shape his eventual college choice.

Jaheim Singletary's visits
Cornerback Jaheim Singletary is one of the top uncommitted recruits left in the 2022 class after decommitting from Ohio State in the beginning of August. He's the No. 14 ranked recruit overall and a 6-foot-1, 175-pound corner from Jacksonville, Florida.

Cornerback Jaheim Singletary, the No. 14-ranked prospect in the Class of 2022, decommitted from Ohio State during the summer. ThreeStep
Singletary is one of the more highly sought-after defensive backs given his size and ability and has offers from nearly every major program. He is getting back out to campuses to take visits and will start this weekend with a trip to Florida for the Alabama game. The top-20 prospect will then visit Georgia for its game against Arkansas on Oct. 2.

He recently tweeted that he thinks he has narrowed down his list and he will soon release his top schools. Florida and Georgia would seemingly make that list with Miami as a potential add as well.

Who helped themselves in recruiting this week?
Oregon went to Columbus, Ohio, and beat a top-three-ranked Ohio State team on the road. It was an impressive win, considering the Ducks were short a few defensive starters, including defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and linebacker Justin Flowe. The results of the game were talked about prominently nationally and Oregon has already built up quite the recruiting buzz over the past few years under coach Mario Cristobal.

Just because it was a road game doesn't mean it didn't have an impact on recruits. In fact, Oregon safety Marko Vidackovic reportedly walked by a group of prospects visiting Ohio State and said, "You boys better come to Oregon," according to Jarrid Denney.

The Ducks already have the No. 5 ranked class in 2022 with 11 ESPN 300 commitments. A win like that against a top-ranked team can only help push the success even further ahead. The Ducks have quite a few of their targets already committed, so where this could really help is in the 2023 class, as Oregon doesn't yet have any commitments in that class.

Another team that helped themselves in a national game was Michigan, which convincingly beat Washington under the lights in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines had some huge visitors on campus, and by all accounts, they came away impressed.

The No. 1-ranked recruit, Walter Nolen, was the biggest name who was on campus, joined by offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr. and USC defensive back commit Domani Jackson, who made the trip from California.

Jackson has formed a friendship with current Michigan corner commit William Johnson, and with USC firing Helton, the visit to Michigan couldn't have happened at a better time.

The Wolverines could use help in the secondary, and if the coaches can sign both Johnson and Jackson in this class, it would immediately boost the defense.

USC recruiting impact
Speaking of USC, firing Helton in September is likely going to have an impact on this recruiting class. There isn't much time left until the early signing period and there isn't a clear direction yet as to who will be the next head coach full-time.

That likely won't happen until after the season. For now, USC assistant Donte Williams is taking over as interim coach. Williams is one of USC's best recruiters, but without having the permanent job, it will be tough to keep things intact.

The Trojans have five ESPN 300 commitments and only one from California. Jackson is the lone in-state top-300 recruit, and as mentioned above, he just took a visit to Michigan. Losing him would be a big blow to the Trojans' recruiting efforts, as he is widely regarded as one of the best corners in the class.

His father, Randy, however said they plan on waiting to see what happens before making any decisions one way or another.

Donte Williams, one of USC's top recruiters, took over as USC's interim head coach following the firing of Clay Helton. John McGillen/University of Southern California Athletics via AP
"We're actually going to see who they bring on. It just happened , so I haven't really had any communication with the USC staff as of today to see where they're at," Randy said. "Donte was our main contact as his recruiter, so that's usually who we talk to 100% of the time. I know he's a little more busy today. It just depends: Is it going to be a coach that comes in and cleans house? That will have one impact for the coach to come in, is he going to retain Donte. I don't know. It's yet to be seen."

Jackson took his visit to Michigan and he's also planning to visit Alabama on Nov. 6 for the game against LSU.

The family plans to wait, but Jackson's father says the timing is going to have to line up. Jackson is planning to sign in December and enroll in January, so they can't wait forever for USC to make a decision.

Quarterback commit Devin Brown, from Utah, said he will stay in the class, and because adding quarterback depth will always be important, keeping him in this class will be a main focus.

The good news for the next head coach, whenever that person is hired, is that the NCAA has a rule that allows recruits to take a second official visit if a coach leaves that school. That could provide helpful this year given many recruits took official visits in June when the restrictions amid the NCAA's dead period were lifted from COVID-19.

The new coach having the ability to bring recruits back to campus that have already taken officials, without having to pay out of pocket, could end up being an important detail.

There haven't been any big decommitments yet, but with ESPN 300 commits from Georgia, New Jersey, Utah and Nevada, plus one from California already looking around, it is going to take a lot of work to keep the class together.

Given USC just settled a sexual harassment suit for over $1B, there's no way they hire Urb with his baggage.

Granted, what happened with the case was related to the Medical department. But the President was fired and they brought in someone to clean up the mess. She's not gonna be on board with hiring someone who left chaos behind at every stop.

71. "Broncos DT Dre' Mont Jones has some choice words about Urban Meyer"
In response to Reply # 0

Urban Meyer’s tenure as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach is off to a rocky start, to say the least. Not only did the Jaguars look hapless in a 37-21 loss to division-foe Houston in Week 1, but reports broke prior to the game painting a negative culture created by Meyer behind the scenes.

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Meyer hasn’t exactly excelled in his jump to the professional ranks. Sources told La Canfora that Meyer lashed out after preseason losses and hasn’t quite grasped how to manage the day-to-day NFL operations, causing him to clash with veteran coaches and players.

Dre’Mont Jones, a former player under Meyer at Ohio State and current Denver Broncos defensive lineman, was asked Thursday about the alleged turmoil in Jacksonville.

“Am I surprised by it? No,” Jones said. “I just know how he is. I’m not going into great detail about it. But, like, it doesn’t surprise me.”

The Broncos travel to play the Jaguars at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. Jones signed with Ohio State in 2015 out of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 133 player nationally, No. 10 strong-side defensive end and No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Ohio.

Jones played under Meyer from 2015-18, making an immediate impact as a redshirt freshman by starting in 12 games. He finished his career with 115 tackles, 22 for a loss and 9.5 sacks, 8.5 of which came in his junior campaign.

In June, Jones joined Denver teammate Shelby Harris on Shel-Shocked Harris’ weekly podcast hosted on 94.1 FM. Harris asked Jones how he thought Meyer’s coaching style would translate to the NFL.

“NFL coach wise, he’s going to have to shake things up to how he was doing,” Jones said. “How he coached us was, he didn’t really f--- with you if you weren’t like a player. If you weren’t playing, those conversations didn’t exist. Like I was a four-star recruit. This man was out here hyping my head up to, ‘Bruh, I don’t even know you.’ Like we’d walk past in the hallway and I’d say ‘How you doing coach?’ This man looked at me like I was crazy for speaking to him and just keep walking. He showed zero respect. Zero respect.

“I’m like, this the type of dude you are? As things go on I’m starting to learn more. Every time he talks to you, it feels like it was his first time talking to you. It’s like he didn’t remember having a conversation with you.”

Jones said that, while star players like Joey and Nick Bosa and Ohio State’s quarterbacks were treated like “kings and gods,” the rest of the players had to fight to be acknowledged.

“This man ridiculed you, dogged you. He’d do it in front of the team so bad he’d make you want to quit.” Jones said.

In response to Reply # 0

for a third rounder and a TE who has averaged 150 receiving yards per season the last four years he's been active

Henderson seems like he might be poorly adjusted to be traded like that, but the return is horrible on paper

if TE is such a weakness, maybe Urban shouldn't have wasted workouts and camp time on Tebow

the fact Urban has GM power is insane

giving her some fake title for a no show job seems like something they'd just throw in as part of urban's contract.

not that it makes her views on these issues any less abhorrent but not sure it makes every other OSU medical professional an incompetent horror show by default

it's abundantly clear that this guy isn't fit to coach anywhere.

you saw the demise in his coaching abilities towards the end of his run at osu.

the idea that he'd want to go to sc or that sc would even want or be willing to pay him has never made any sense to me.

but why would any university hire urban when they can't even be certain that he'll be able to finish ONE season without quitting due to mental/physical collapse/scandal?

and given the above, how does he recruit?

he can't represent a university and he's not a good enough to coach in the NFL. that doesn't leave him with a lot of options.

he needs about 3 years out of the public eye and then a return back to the studio.

but this assumes he actually wants to coach college again (evidence suggests otherwise) and that he'd settle for any gig. he voluntarily left osu and turned down texas. these are the 2 best jobs in cfb. he's expressed zero interest in SC and vice versa, and helton has been on the hot seat forever. so what job is he holding out for?

from a football perspective i think hiring him is dumb because his strength as a coach was as a recruiter who built more talented rosters than everyone else. you can't recruit at an elite level when you can't guarantee recruits and parents that you'll be able to last through even one season. and you can't recruit when your reputation as a person is tarnished.

he's not an X's and O's guy and he's running an antiquated offensive system that no longer works at the elite college level. this will also effect his ability to recruit because what 5 star qb would want to sign up to run the ball 20 times per game?

he built an historically good staff at UF but his hiring decisions at his last two stops have been dreadful. he has blind spots when it comes to coaching hires that aren't going away.

Despite the obvious character flaws people think they're getting Urban the football coach from 2006 when he's clearly a shell of his former self in that regard.

I always thought he would do a barry alvarez deal at OSU and fill in as interim HC whenever needed but I think even that ship has sailed.

His ego is hurt and doesn’t like losing because he doesn’t feel in control when he is losing. The best way to cure a bruised ego is to win. He won’t want to end his career on a down note. He will want to end his career as a winner.

It’s the same reason that Saban left Miami for Alabama. Urban will go to SC because he can easily recruit there and win right away. He may only coach at SC for 4 or 5 years but that will be enough to win multiple Pac 12 titles, go to some CFB playoffs and maybe win another championship.

Florida was a "dream job" when he was in Utah

>before
>Braxton Miller fell in his hands instead of a Jeff Driskel

tl;dr: Meyer put all of his eggs in the wrong QB basket, then ended up with them all over his face.

it wasnt Jeff Driskel tho. it was John David Brantley, who played for a small Catholic school in Ocala that beat up on small public schools. he was a big fish in a tiny pond, and a Gator legacy, and clearly not the guy.

so in 2008 Meyer goes all in on Trey Burton of Venice HS, current TE for the Colts, as his next veer option savior. Burton committed in 2008 before his Jr year, and summer of 2008 is when I moved to Port Charlotte, about 25 minutes from Venice. hearing about this local wonderkind my ex and i rode out to see him play one night.

he was NOT good, just full grown already. Dri Archer, a 5'7 fireball and future consensus AA at Kent State was the spark for everything they did. i watched them on TV a few more times and it was more of the same. incidentally Archer went on to beat Denard in the 100m state finals and did a 4.26(!) 40 at the combine.

in 2009 without Archer, Venice was meh. Burton racked up a bunch of short yardage TD runs and decently efficient passing against a usually loaded box. to me, he was a poor man's Jermaine Gonzales (OLSM) with more power in his running.

Jordan Reed had already been moved to TE, so in 2010 UF went out there with Brantley, Burton, and....nobody else. Two major misses at QB. Meanwhile, people in Florida are starting to wonder why Denard isnt around.

Season goes along terribly, Denard becomes the first 2500/1500 QB in NCAA history while Brantley and Burton flounder, and voila. He needs to spend time with his family because of blah blah blah.

Miami not signing Drew Brees and Cam Newton stealing a laptop.

If Miami signs Brees, Saban probably doesn’t end up back at Bama and if that happens and Cam doesn’t steal a laptop then Urb probably sticks around at Florida for another 5 years.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/jaguars/2021/10/07/urban-meyer-mom-worried-daughter-after-video-jaguars-coach/6041103001/

Mom of woman from Urban Meyer video worried about daughter's 'emotional status'
Josh Peter
USA TODAY

The mother of the 24-year-old woman who was videotaped and photographed dancing near Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer at Urban’s Chophouse in Columbus, Ohio last week said she is worried about her daughter's wellbeing.

“(She) can’t even go anywhere," the mother told USA TODAY Sports. “It's ruining her life is what it’s doing. I’m worried for her emotional status right now."

USA TODAY Sports is not identifying the woman or her mother because they have been the subject of backlash despite not having made any public statements yet.

New Horizon Media Group, a marketing company where the woman works, said Thursday it is conducting an internal investigation into the incident that took place Friday.

The company is not in position “to make any determination as to her (employment) status,” said Brian Duncan, an attorney representing the company.

He said the woman is working for the company during the investigation.

Alex Cruz, the owner of New Horizons Media Group, referred a request for comment to Duncan.

“I just pray that Alex doesn’t fire my daughter because she needs this job," the mother said. “She just bought a house."

When asked why New Horizons Media Group needed to conduct an investigation, Duncan said: “We’ve had no prior issues with her whatsoever. She’s been a very solid asset to the company. We’re going to undertake our internal investigation to determine what, if any, impact this has on the company and we’ll proceed accordingly."

Duncan said the company has done work for Urban Chophouse, a joint venture with Meyer and an Ohio restaurateur, and said there is no knowledge the woman had a previous relationship with Meyer, the former coach at Ohio State.

One video showed the woman dancing suggestively near Meyer and another video showed Meyer apparently grabbing the women’s buttocks.

The videos of the woman and Meyer were distributed on social media after the Jaguars lost to the Bengals 24-21 Thursday night in Cincinnati.

"There was a big group next to the restaurant," Meyer said during his Monday press conference. "They wanted me to come over and take pictures, and I did. (They) tried to pull me out on the dance floor, screwing around, but I should've left."

Meyer, who has roots in Ohio and coached the Ohio State Buckeyes from the 2012-18 seasons, said he did not travel back to Florida with the team and stayed so that he could spend time with his grandchildren and attend an event.

"I just apologized to the team for being a distraction," Meyer said. "It's stupid. I explained everything that happened and I should not have put myself in that position."

Meyer added that he apologized to his family, saying they were "upset" about the video.

Go be Saban. You don't have to actually coach, the recruits come to you, and you can hire every assistant while making 10 million a year til you die.

These assholes have to know they can't actually coach men. They can't game plan, and they can't really coach anyone up or call plays. Just go bang young girls and stop trying to be a coach

yeah that's the thing Urb projects this image of a "family man" then you see him on a barstool (in his defense he was probably holding on for dear life but it looked like he had his thumb up her butt lol) its just his arrogance, you're Urban Meyer in Columbus, Ohio, its not like you're trying to be on some low key shit so he shouldn't be surprised when it became a story. Its similar to when he tried to hire that racist assistant coach or tried to make Tebow a TE, he just thinks he can do shit because he's Urban Meyer but the NFL is a lot different than college. If his team was 2-2 instead of 0-4 things would probably be a lot different too...

its different when you're coaching teenagers and you control their entire lives then you have to coach grown men who are millionaires some of them making more money than you
