"Rachel Nichols made a diversity comment about Maria Taylor’s promotion"

and all hell has broken lose because of it.

https://youtu.be/HrL_S_0rhA0

I’ve never been a fan of her reporting, because it seems so forced, especially
her side reporting. I truly question her authenticity when it comes to being
interested in covering the NBA. She can be very curt and quick to cut players off.
However, that’s just simply my opinion of her ability.

Did she make that comment because of espn’s history
of inequality towards AA, and she feels their current diversity
moves are quota moves, and are taking opportunities
away from women in general?

Or

She has never been found of AA, and feels threatened by their
achievements and advancements within the sport journalism
industry?

This is what a person is forced to think about after hearing
those comments.

Everything you said is true, Nichols is so overbearing and
annoying. I’ve criticized her before and was accused of
being a “misogynist” lol, I’m glad her true colors are
finally showing and she’s being called out. I hope the
self-anointed “queen” of the NBA on ABC/ESPN gets taken
down a peg.

She would constantly talk down to co-hosts/guests as if she felt she held some kind of superiority over them - and her arrogance was pretty apparent - but this video exposes grotesque entitlement.

Adam Mendelsohn's comments are just as bad IMO - and I'm glad they both were exposed for their true feelings/thoughts behind their expertly curated media veils.

The audacity it takes to report on a majority Black sport/business and feel like a Black woman is the "diversity hire" is unfathomable arrogance. If anyone is the "diversity hire" here who was elevated for reasons other than merit - it's Rachel - and she should be thankful that she's been able to make millions thanks to the talent and appeal of a predominately Black sport/business.

The way Nichols & Mendelsohn spouted off on the subject of social justice was wildly voyeuristic and manipulative.

https://sports.yahoo.com/rachel-nichols-leaked-diversity-comments-about-maria-taylor-causes-uproar-at-espn-161546834.html

Rachel Nichols' leaked 'diversity' comments about Maria Taylor causes uproar at ESPN

Sun, July 4, 2021, 12:15 PM·6 min read

A bombshell report from the New York Times on Sunday revealed there is allegedly heavy internal strife at ESPN stemming comments about diversity that NBA sideline reporter and "The Jump" host Rachel Nichols made about her colleague Maria Taylor, NBA and NFL reporter and the host of "NBA Countdown."

According to the New York Times, Nichols made these comments in July 2020 after ESPN told her that Taylor, who is Black, would be hosting coverage of the NBA Finals instead of her. Nichols sought advice from LeBron James' longtime advisor Adam Mendelsohn and James' agent Rich Paul on a call that was reportedly accidentally recorded because Nichols hadn't turned her video camera off.

During the call, Nichols can be heard saying that she feels like Taylor is only being promoted over her due to ESPN's long and terrible record on diversity.

“I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball,” Nichols said in July 2020 via the New York Times. “If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.”

The New York Times reported that the call was recorded and stored on one of ESPN's servers, which numerous employees have access to. One employee recorded it with their cell phone and sent it to others within the company, who then sent it to more employees. The call was eventually leaked to Deadspin and the Times. Thus far, that employee is the only one to be disciplined over the incident, as Nichols said to the Times that ESPN told her that "the content of the conversation didn't warrant any discipline."

The only person known to be punished was Kayla Johnson, a digital video producer who told ESPN human resources that she had sent the video to Taylor. Johnson, who is Black, was suspended for two weeks without pay, and later was given less desirable tasks at work.

ESPN employees told the Times that the company's decision not to discipline Nichols for her comments remains an “active source of pain.” ESPN spokesperson Josh Krulewitz said this to the New York Times in response to questions about the punishment (or lack thereof) of employees involved in this incident:

“A diverse group of executives thoroughly and fairly considered all the facts related to the incident and then addressed the situation appropriately. We’re proud of the coverage we continue to produce, and our focus will remain on Maria, Rachel and the rest of the talented team collectively serving N.B.A. fans.”

Nichols, who said she was "shaken" that a "fellow employee" would record and share a video of her private hotel room conversation, gave a statement to the Times along with responses to their questions.

In response to questions from The Times, Nichols said she was frustrated and was “unloading to a friend about ESPN’s process, not about Maria.” But she added: “My own intentions in that conversation, and the opinion of those in charge at ESPN, are not the sum of what matters here — if Maria felt the conversation was upsetting, then it was, and I was the cause of that for her.”

Nichols said she reached out to Taylor to apologize through texts and phone calls. “Maria has chosen not to respond to these offers, which is completely fair and a decision I respect,” Nichols said.

Nichols' comments, ESPN response enrages employees and 'Countdown' crew
According to the New York Times, the response from employees who work on NBA content was anger and frustration at Nichols' attitude.

Within ESPN, particularly among the N.B.A. group that works with both Taylor and Nichols, many employees were outraged upon watching the video. They were especially upset by what they perceived as Nichols’s expression of a common criticism used by white workers in many workplaces to disparage nonwhite colleagues — that Taylor was offered the hosting job only because of her race, not because she was the best person for the job.

The employees also said that Nichols made Taylor’s job more difficult because Taylor also needs to go to Mendelsohn to secure interviews with basketball newsmakers.

After Nichols' comments were leaked, Taylor reportedly declined to host "NBA Countdown" during the finals. She eventually changed her mind, but only on the condition that Nichols not appear on the show. ESPN agreed, then ignored that almost immediately by airing prerecorded segments with Nichols that appeared to be happening live.

In Taylor’s view, according to six people who have spoken to her, ESPN executives agreed to the stipulation but violated it almost immediately by allowing Nichols to make short appearances without interacting with Taylor. ESPN declined to comment about the arrangement.

The segments of other sideline reporters then became a mix of live and prerecorded. ESPN later threatened to prerecord every reporters' segment on "NBA Countdown" if Taylor continued to "refuse to interact" with Nichols. This led to a blowup on a preshow call between the show's commentators — Taylor, Jalen Rose, Adrian Wojnarowski, and Jay Williams — and ESPN executives. Via the New York Times:

On the preshow call involving the stars of the show and production staff in both Los Angeles and New York, Taylor insisted to an executive that she be able to conduct live interviews with sideline reporters. She also brought up the recorded phone conversation. Wojnarowski jumped in and called Nichols a bad teammate. Rose said that ESPN had asked a lot from Black employees over the past year, but that he and other Black employees would extend their credibility to the company no longer.

Taylor, whom executives had asked numerous times to change her interactions with Nichols, said that the only people punished by ESPN’s actions were women of color: Johnson, herself and the three sideline reporters — Lisa Salters, Cassidy Hubbarth and Andrews — who received lesser assignments so that Nichols could have the lead sideline reporter role and now were not being allowed to appear on the show live.

Soon after, ESPN began allowing all sideline reporters to air their segments live on "NBA Countdown."

Taylor's contract at ESPN expires in just a few weeks, right in the middle of the NBA Finals. According to the New York Times, "few substantive steps have been taken toward a new deal" even though ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro has identified Taylor as one of the network's rising stars.

NBA and her longtime reporting of it. Maria’s bag has way more in it, already. She probably did more different things than Rachel, before she even got to ESPN. I’m glad that Jalen, Jay and Woj had her back on that call.

White people can never disappoint me, they can only pleasantly surprise me.

Time and time again white people prove why this country is so racist. The violent brutalization of Black (and other POC) bodies gets the attention but the daily entitlement with which they move and the violent opposition to being divested of their unearned privilege runs like clockwork, RARELY interrupted.

I will be interested in seeing what apology tour ensues and how much caping her Black colleagues do. Sideline reporting is low IQ work so you don't get to measure what someone is really about (so glad Doris is getting more work as a commentator) but if we get to TALK ABOUT IT???

I want more more more of this from Maria:

Sorry Rachel, loving AI and Kobe ain't enough. The next move will be telling.

Nichols should have made a real in depth apology ALONE. Not that vague bullshit. And no need to trot out character witnesses because this had nothing to do with them. I don't give a fuck how great she is as a person. Her specific ACTIONS here are what is being criticized. And she should have to answer for that without dragging anyone else into it.

All of that shit we just watched in the "apology" video was some by-the-numbers corporate conflict resolution bullshit. And you got innocent bystanders having to risk their own credibility just to salvage hers.

Mind you, the recording itself has circulated among the employees since last fall or winter. So ESPN, and especially Rachel, knew it was out there and never chose to get out in front of it.

is that Adam Mendelsohn felt completely comfortable degrading BLM AND Me Too right in front of her (with no pushback). Like, BLM...I can see that because they're both white and most of these muthafuckas are two faced on race. Lol. But imagine telling a woman that Me Too was exhausting and she nods along. Especially Rachel, who brings up a player's history of alleged abuse of women any time she can. That shit speaks volumes.

the guy fights an ALLEGATION and was not convicted. probably could've settled and paid off the plaintiff but he aired his dirty laundry to prove his innocence. seemed like the evidence pointed towards a money grab attempt. yet rachel had to continue to drag his (innocent) name because of this ALLEGATION.

i'm sure there are other examples of her doing similar stuff.

analysts that are usually former athletes or coaches, sometimes a reporter.

The host usually runs the show and the analysts give their opinion. Rachel seems to have trouble understanding what her role is.

And Maria Taylor and Malika Andrews are better at her job than her so she feel's threatened and is trying to pull a crying Karen move.

i said to myself "i wonder what this is about?"

did NOT expect it to be about him and Ersan Iylasova clapping Rachel Nichol's cheeks.

now that said, i know from people who work in the biz that it's very common (like most workplaces) for athletes to be getting in with the people who report on them.

but this is funny considering the timing, plus twitter always gonna produce great memes.

Adam, Lebron's advisor, dissed the me too movement while Rachel laughed... Somehow a black woman took the fall for Rachel and tht's swept under the rug. If Maria leaves in three weeks and Rachel stays ESPN loses badly. The optics alone hurt the network.

..Nichols being removed from live coverage of the Finals only addresses one part of the problem here.

Rachel Nichols personified the real problem with "diversity enforcement" in employment. What she said was absolutely appalling, but that doesn't mean its not true. The network is just as responsible and at fault here for putting Maria Taylor in this unfortunate circumstance to begin with.

*Please note: Maria Taylor's professional experience should not be in question here.

As far as I'm concerned, ESPN owes Black America a serious apology.

Beyond that, they need to go ahead and cut the check for Maria Taylor and Kayla Johnson.

There are a ton of people way more qualified to do Nichols job she just got it because she was the cute little jewish chick that knew a little about basketball.

Now she's being 1 upped by the tall hot black chick that actually played basketball and is better at her job than Nichols and Nichols is in her feelings about about it

She recorded the recording off espn servers to her iphone. They could have
actually pressed charges....intellectual property theft.

She didn’t know any better though. It wasn’t like she was versed in being
a CIA agent.

I would have sent that shit to the whole company and press via the library. Machines
stay logged on under the account of the library. Emailed that shit
via a burner email account.....and burner accounts on Twitter, Instagram and
Facebook.

Whole world would have found out in less than 30 mins.

intellectual property. That is a straight breach of company policy, and that doesn’t
matter who side anyone is on.

That is the only thing I kinda blame Maria for. She accepted the information
and took it to the network. That wasn’t the right play. She should have sat on it until
she and her friend were in a secure and protected position. Or she should have
leaked it straight to the press when it first happened. She could have pretended that
it was her first time hearing it. That would have been the better power move, especially at the height of last year’s social injustice protesting.

Rachel was in the bubble at the time of the incident, and probably would
have been forced to leave.

Yahoo Sports
ESPN's Maria Taylor reportedly nearing deal with NBC Sports
Chris Cwik
Chris Cwik
Wed, July 14, 2021, 8:37 PM·2 min read
Maria Taylor might be leaving ESPN for a major role at NBC Sports. Taylor — whose contract with ESPN expires during the NBA Finals — is reportedly nearing a deal with NBC Sports, according to Front Office Sports.

It's unclear how much money Taylor would make as part of the deal, but ESPN was reportedly offering Taylor $3 million to stay, so the NBC Sports figure would likely top that.

NBC Sports could have big plans for Taylor if she takes their offer. Front Office Sports mentions Taylor could host "Football Night in America" when Mike Tirico takes over play-by-play duty for Al Michaels. Tirico currently hosts "Football Night in America," but is expected to take over for Michaels once his contract expires after the 2021 season.

Taylor has also worked on "College GameDay" at ESPN, and could be involved with Notre Dame broadcasts at NBC Sports.

Taylor's deal with NBC isn't finalized yet. It's currently "at the half-yard line," a source told Front Office Sports. The source noted, "That can still be a long way in contract negotiations."

The New York Post's Andrew Marchand previously reported NBC Sports' interest in Taylor.

Maria Taylor in the spotlight at ESPN after Rachel Nichols fiasco
Taylor's tenure at ESPN could end on a negative note after she was the subject of leaked 'diversity' comments from colleague Rachel Nichols. During the conversation, Nichols implied ESPN only wanted to advance Taylor due to the network's poor track record with diversity.

A number of employees at ESPN were furious over Nichols' comments. Nichols apologized to Taylor during an episode of Nichols' show "The Jump," and was then replaced as the NBA Finals sideline reporter by Malika Andrews.

That’s the number of people who tune into a game because of who’s announcing it

The constant turnover of broadcast personalities, their salaries, and their egos baffles me.

I’ve literally only ever cared about Gus Johnson. That’s it. That leaves dozens of play by play and color and sideline people who I’ve never cared less about.

There are plenty of people who tune in specifically for the crew calling the game. I know people who watch sports on mute, while listening to the same broadcast on the radio because of their preferences.

>while listening to the same broadcast on the radio because of
>their preferences.

and the two are not even in the same stratosphere regarding importance and skill/difficulty level.

to your point, some will mute the tv play by play crew because if the announcers are bad, it can ruin the entire watching experience. and it's not at all uncommon for announcers to be downright bad because it's a really really hard thing to be good at. the number of announcers who are great at what they do are really few and far between. but despite that, nobody is checking in specifically to hear a particular announcer.

and along those lines, the idea that anybody is checking in for a specific sideline announcer...cmon.

I like Taylor. She's a pro. But the amount of money being thrown at her is pretty funny to me.

Maria Taylor officially leaving ESPN after 'diversity' drama with Rachel Nichols
Liz Roscher
Liz Roscher
Wed, July 21, 2021, 12:22 PM·2 min read
ESPN announced on Wednesday that NBA and NFL analyst and host Maria Taylor is officially leaving the network. According to the statement released by ESPN, Taylor and the network couldn't come to an agreement on a contract extension. Her final assignment was Tuesday night's coverage of Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

“Maria’s remarkable success speaks directly to her abilities and work ethic," ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. "There is no doubt we will miss Maria, but we remain determined to continue to build a deep and skilled talent roster that thoroughly reflects the athletes we cover and the fans we serve. While she chose to pursue a new opportunity, we are proud of the work we’ve done together.”

Taylor also commented on her departure from the network:

“So thankful to Jimmy and all of my great teammates and friends at the SEC Network, College GameDay, Women’s and Men’s college basketball, and the NBA Countdown family — the people who believed in me, encouraged me, pushed me, and lifted me up. Words are inadequate to express my boundless appreciation, and I hope to make them proud.”

Taylor, who also covers college basketball and college football for ESPN, didn't announce where she's going next. However, the New York Post reported that Taylor is close to inking a contract with NBC, and could even be part of their Olympics coverage.

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 01: ESPN analyst Maria Taylor reports from the sideline during the Allstate Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff Semifinal between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Clemson Tigers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 1, 2021 in New Orleans, LA. Strife between Maria Taylor, ESPN

Taylor was recently at the center of a firestorm about race and gender that she had no hand in creating. Last year, after ESPN decided to give the 2020 NBA Finals hosting job to Taylor instead of her fellow NBA host and reporter Rachel Nichols, Nichols was caught on tape alleging that Taylor, who is Black, had only been given that job because of ESPN's "crappy longtime record on diversity."

The recording was leaked internally at ESPN, which caused an uproar among employees. According to the New York Times, which reported on ESPN's internal response just two weeks before Taylor's contract was set to expire, ESPN didn't handle the situation well, making promises to Taylor that they almost immediately broke.

Taylor's contract was originally going to expire before the end of the NBA Finals, but she and ESPN reached an agreement for her to continue until the Finals were over. However, despite ESPN reportedly offering her $3 million to stay with the network, she's decided to move on.

The incident probably forced ESPN to sweeten their offer a bit and the competitor to counter. She didn't do anything wrong so all of this attention just increases her name recognition. And it probably made the decision even easier bc ESPN is getting comically bad at managing its talent.

Nichols didn't get fired but I think this incident follows her for awhile. I could see management being hesitant to put her in a prominent role in the future because they wouldn't want to deal with the potential backlash.

..We all know Rachel Nichol's contract will likely guarantee more work for her (at the least, a nice severance package).

Maria secured the bag with NBC (understandably), so her career continues along the path of ascension.

However, there's been absolutely NO COVERAGE of Kayla Johnson (the only person punished in this entire scenario for dong the right thing, the HUMAN thing) was pretty much demoted and forgotten about.

Perhaps its her own preference to stay out of the limelight, but I hope she secures the bag as well. She clearly deserves it. Kayla, if you're reading this:

Thank you. You made a considerable sacrifice to do the right thing, in spite of manipulative company policies that would suggest otherwise. You are appreciated.

Her being demoted is a slap on the wrist..She committed a cyber crime, bro.

She took data off a server...and she wasn’t the owner of any of it.
Do you know how many criminal charges she could have been slapped with?

It was a stupid move on her and Maria Taylor’s part. They both handled
it completely wrong.

They should have sat on it and built up a case...

Whistle blowers break bullshit "laws" that are only designed to protect abusive manipulators. Kayla Johnson is the hero of this story and I don't give a damn what you have to say about it.

She clearly reviewed the situation and made the decision that doing the right thing was more important than following the rules. Fuck a lawsuit. Hell, the fines she face(d) are NOTHING compared to the bs that she, Maria, and every other BLACK employee of ESPN/Disney faces daily.

You could learn a thing or two from her.

and understand why privacy laws and property laws exists...too protect your
property and privacy.

1. Rachel Nicholas made a comment in her private room regarding the promotion
of another worker. She unintentionally recorded herself, and the conversation was
uploaded to an ESPN server

Kayla accessed the conversation from the server, and she gave it to Maria Taylor,
who then sends it to The NY Times.

The data was on the company’s server which was located on the company’s
physical property. It was taken from the server without approval and it was handed
over to a third party without approval, who then published it.
I’m just stating the facts and the law. It’s that simple. It’s computer piracy.

So I’m just refuting your statement that she should file a lawsuit, when she is
the one who committed a crime...or a breach of policy.

Imagine someone stealing info from your computer or server or recording your
internet actions without your approval and publishing it....

There are two sides to every coin.

And what I’m saying they could have actually pressed charges as well,
because she committed computer piracy.

Her termination was a slap on a wrist...so in regards to that particular situation she has
zero grounds for a lawsuit.

This isn’t on some Julian Assange Wikileaks level, or a situation of corruption.

She took the data to have dirt on Rachel Nichols, gave it to her girl,
who tried to use it as leverage and it backfired....

Now all three of them are no longer there. No one won.

A women’s opinion was recorded and leaked. That’s it. That’s all that happened.

Cyren labeling it a whistleblowing moment, when it was simply
a person getting dirt on someone else and trying to use it
as leverage.

All of this happened a year ago, and when Taylor’s requests weren’t
met in regards to her pay and having Rachel demoted, she leaked
the recording to the NYT.

And personally I don’t think Rachel did anything wrong if you truly
look at it. She gave her opinion on the situation regarding Taylor’s
promotion in what she thought was a private conversation. She felt
Taylor’s promotion was a diversity move and that the BLM coverage
was ESPN simply catering to black people to get them to tune in.

Now I don’t agree with her opinion, but it’s far from some conspiracy,
whistleblowing situation...and doesn’t have anything to do with being
a heroine(lol).

It was a power move that backfired.

..you can speculate about motive as long as you want, but that doesn't change the fact that ESPN completely botched their handling of this situation.

Whether this (and other complaints against the network) moves the needle regarding horrible diversity hiring practices has yet to be seen.

Nothing backfired. While Rachel Nichols has been humbled, Maria & Kayla are both thriving, Malika Andrews has stepped up and is soaring.

Re-reading the post...you made a lot of cut the check replies
I'm ASSuming you think Rachel should've been immediately let go...and Maria given the marquee
... which leads back to my prior question which you deflected on...
Are you advocating for employers monitoring employees personal lives?
You posted the link in reply 7(?) which explains how the audio was obtained by Kayla
... that's okay with you...?
I stand by my reply that both things can be true...but I'll let you speak on the macro issue

Apologize to black america for...?
I honestly don't know about ESPN's history of diversity issues, etc...

Given this specific example, you don't see an issue with rewarding Maria and Kayla, the precedent that would set, etc...

If the goal is to address the issue at ESPN, why leave?
To go to NBC on top of that...the network that killed the Weinstein story...
I haven't seen Maria on air since leaving
Feels a little bit like hustling backwards

I think it was Amin that said, part of the issue getting overlooked is Rachel's contract
...what Rachel said is true (c) you...
... context is critical (c) you...
Maria getting some of Rachel's placements happened in the wake of the GF murder and subsequent demonstrations
Isn't Maria getting those placements a violation of Rachel's contract terms and the appearance of diversity when it's convenient that is the problem in the first place?

Still standing by stance that both parties are wrong here...but I'm lost on putting the blame on the network

ESPN/Disney is always going to do what's in their best interest and secures the bag
The bigger issue IMO, is ESPN still being a monopoly as a sports network

Short of a FUBU sports channel... that's not going to change IMO
If Maria's intent was to address ESPN's diversity issues, why leave...and go to NBC?

Rachel gone, and now all those spots that she was in line for go to someone else...while she's relegated to FNIA once a week

FTR, I was a fan
She was an absolute pro on the air
Felt like a genuine connection between her and Jalen
I'm afraid for her being on the FNIA broadcast
Nothing more racist in US sports than football fans IMO

>Are you advocating for employers monitoring people’s
>personal lives?

She was in the bubble, covering the NBA for ESPN and improperly used company equipment. So it wasn't 'personal'. She wasn't at dinner or at her home not being recorded. She was there to work.

Secondarily, yes, you can absolutely lose your job for doing dumb sh*t publicly. We've seen a bevy of bigots lose jobs over social media rants and live streamed public racist breakdowns. Typically, employers don't want to continue to employ someone who brings negative press to their bottom line.

>If the goal was to expose a toxic work environment…
>Where is the on the job evidence?
>Why hold on to a private conversation for a year?

The conversations were not held for a year from what I understand, it just made press during he playoffs. I could be wrong here though.

>What if I looked at you under a microscope
>Saw all the dirty organisms living in your closet (c)

If I worked in press and uploaded something dumb and offensive to my employers server, I'd expect to get reprimanded if it remained internal and fired if it became public.

In the end, if we all just act like decent human beings instead of being pieces of sh*t, these things don't happen. Was no reason for Nichols to say what she said and she even chuckled it up with dude she was chatting with when he minimized Me Too...like it wasn't about harassment and sexual assault. Diversity hire is one of the worst things you can say to a qualified Black person trying to advance their career.

after leaving ESPN
Most of us have become familiar with streaming for work during the pandemic
Amin made comments...this is not a new format for sports coverage
Doing recorded segments from remote locations has always been a part of the job
...so if you think Rachel just coincidentally forgot her camera was on...this 1 time, during this conversation...yeah, that's a f'n leap
He alleged she was hot mic'd
There wasn't video because there would be an LED indicating the camera was still recording...we only have audio

"She was in the bubble, covering the NBA for ESPN and improperly used company equipment. So it wasn't 'personal'. She wasn't at dinner or at her home not being recorded. She was there to work."

Expanding on the above
As some one who does travel for work and works remotely
I, like others I assume, have been provided electronic devices by my employer
Yes, she was on location for work
Once that work is completed...she should not have been recored
So let's say, if you have a laptop provided by your job, IT decides to hot mic your laptop and/or record you through the camera...can you see how that's f'd up?

"Secondarily, yes, you can absolutely lose your job for doing dumb sh*t publicly. We've seen a bevy of bigots lose jobs over social media rants and live streamed public racist breakdowns. Typically, employers don't want to continue to employ someone who brings negative press to their bottom line."

This wasn't that though
She didn't make this statement publicly
It wasn't a SM post
+40% of this country voted for Trumpster...twice...again, I think it's very naive to believe these beliefs aren't widespread in every industry
...and I'm still against monitoring people's personal lives...that's going too far IMO

"The conversations were not held for a year from what I understand, it just made press during he playoffs. I could be wrong here though."

It was leaked to the press ahead of Maria's contract negotiations...another coincidence

"If I worked in press and uploaded something dumb and offensive to my employers server, I'd expect to get reprimanded if it remained internal and fired if it became public."

Again, it doesn't sound like that's what happened here

"In the end, if we all just act like decent human beings instead of being pieces of sh*t, these things don't happen. Was no reason for Nichols to say what she said and she even chuckled it up with dude she was chatting with when he minimized Me Too...like it wasn't about harassment and sexual assault. Diversity hire is one of the worst things you can say to a qualified Black person trying to advance their career."

But given the context of the social justice activism during the GF summer...does it not look like that...?
Again, Amin made statements about Rachel's placements being part of her contract
They took her spot and gave it to Maria...does that not look exactly like an attempt to put a minority at the front of on air coverage that would include coverage of the protests and GF/BT murders?

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/04/sports/basketball/espn-rachel-nichols-maria-taylor.html

Nichols discussed her career on a phone call on July 13, 2020, with Adam Mendelsohn, the longtime adviser of the Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and James’s agent, Rich Paul. Nichols was speaking with Mendelsohn to request an interview with James and his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, whom Paul also represents. During the conversation, she also sought advice from Mendelsohn because she believed her bosses were advancing Taylor at her expense.

“I just want them to go somewhere else — it’s in my contract, by the way; this job is in my contract in writing,” Nichols told Mendelsohn, referring to hosting coverage during the N.B.A. finals a few minutes after saying ESPN was “feeling pressure” about racial diversity.

“We, of course, are not going to comment on the specifics of any commentator contract,” said Josh Krulewitz, an ESPN spokesman. Krulewitz declined to make Pitaro available for an interview.

Unbeknown to Nichols, her video camera was on, and the call was being recorded to a server at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Conn.

It is not clear why her camera was on, but most people at ESPN believe that Nichols, using new technology during a pandemic, did not turn it off properly. It was effectively the remote pandemic version of a hot mic incident.

Dozens of ESPN employees have access to the company’s video servers as part of their normal work flow.

At least one of these people watched the video on the server, recorded it on a cellphone and shared it with others. Soon, more copies of the conversation were spreading around ESPN, and within hours it reached ESPN executives, in part because of some of the comments from Mendelsohn. He is a prominent political and communications strategist who has worked for the giant private equity firm TPG; was a communications director and deputy chief of staff for Arnold Schwarzenegger, then the governor of California; and is a co-founder of James’s voting rights group, More Than a Vote, which focused on encouraging access for Black voters during the 2020 election.

^^^So, she "hot mic'd" herself. There WAS video. The audio was taped from the video.

>Expanding on the above
>As some one who does travel for work and works remotely
>I, like others I assume, have been provided electronic devices
>by my employer
>Yes, she was on location for work

>So let's say, if you have a laptop provided by your job, IT
>decides to hot mic your laptop and/or record you through the
>camera...can you see how that's f'd up?

My employer indeed, did track what I was doing on my laptop during my remote work and informed us all that they would be doing so during work hours. I would simply turn off the device and put it in my laptop bag afterward. Can't record me if I turn it off right? Nichols was indeed working, per the article I provided...she was seeking work related interviews and decided to chop it up during this request.

>This wasn't that though
>She didn't make this statement publicly
>It wasn't a SM post
>+40% of this country voted for Trumpster...twice...again, I
>think it's very naive to believe these beliefs aren't

>lives...that's going too far IMO

It was that when you do it on a work trip, during a work call and it be recorded to a work server.

>It was leaked to the press ahead of Maria's contract
>negotiations...another coincidence

Or maybe it was leaked during her contract negotiations after ESPN failed to address it correctly internally over months of awareness. Everyone knew about this well in advance of contract negotiations...article alludes to this also.

>Again, it doesn't sound like that's what happened here

It's exactly what happened here.

>But given the context of the social justice activism during
>the GF summer...does it not look like that...?
>Again, Amin made statements about Rachel's placements being
>part of her contract
>They took her spot and gave it to Maria...does that not look
>exactly like an attempt to put a minority at the front of on
>air coverage that would include coverage of the protests and
>GF/BT murders?

If ESPN decided to make a change to support racial injustice, it's well within their rights. If Nichols was inclined to dispute this, she should have gone to her lawyer, stated that ESPN has breached contract and then had a meeting about it. This happened in July 2020. Finals weren't until October. There was time to negotiate any grievances. But I'm sure ESPN's stance would have been, "The contract says you'll get paid for these appearances. Right now, we've decided on a different direction but you will still get paid." Which may or may not have held up in court but that's the proper channel. Calling Taylor a diversity hire, to a third party, on company time and hot mic'ing yourself while doing so...not necessary or a good look at all.

Nichols did this to herself and her inner Karen is the reason why.

My point is that when the smoke clears and the dust settles, there's a lot more to this entire scenario and I hope she sues the hell out of them when its all said it done.

Her talents far exceeds just covering sports media. She could
be a primetime anchor woman, so landing the NBC job
is right where she needs to be.

Dana Jacobson evolved after leaving ESPN, and is excelling in
her news role on CBS, where she wears multiple hats as a journalist.
I can see Maria taking on a similar role later on down the road on NBC.

In response to Reply # 0

https://sports.yahoo.com/espn-malika-andrews-host-new-nba-today-show-replacing-rachel-nichols-the-jump-controversy-165007853.html

Malika Andrews will host ESPN show 'NBA Today,' replacing Rachel Nichols' 'The Jump' spot

Malika Andrews will host a new daily NBA studio show for ESPN after Rachel Nichols' "The Jump" was canceled amid controversy in August, the Washington Post's Ben Strauss first reported Monday.

The one-hour "NBA Today" will debut Oct. 18 and air at 3 p.m. every week day on ESPN, ESPN confirmed in a release. The panel of analysts joining Andrews consists of former NBA players Vince Carter and Kendrick Perkins, who were both featured on "The Jump"; current WNBA player and radio host Chiney Ogwumike; and writer and podcaster Zach Lowe.

It will also feature reporters Ramona Shelburne, Adrian Wojnarowski and other NBA reporters working for ESPN. The show will travel to big NBA events such as the Finals.

The first episode will air a day before the regular season begins on Oct. 19 and will air on ESPN2 rather than its home at ESPN proper. NBA training camps open next week and preseason games begin in early October.

"'NBA Today' will provide in-depth, comprehensive daily coverage of all aspects of the NBA," ESPN senior vice president, NBA and studio productions, said in a release. "Malika, who is a phenomenally talented commentator, will run point on a show that will feature a vibrant cast of expert analysts who all offer distinct perspectives on the game. Through the contributions of our wide array of NBA reporters, the show will be both newsy and timely with an eye towards the biggest games around the league that day."

Andrews, 26, is an up-and-coming star for ESPN and received a multi-year contract extension as part of the new show. She joined the company in 2018 and became the youngest broadcaster to host the NBA Finals Trophy ceremony when the Milwaukee Bucks won it all in July.

“It’s an incredible time to cover the NBA — a league that is full of characters and stories that have resonance far beyond the sports world," Andrews said in a company release. "Our goal every day is to deliver information and analysis to our viewers that can’t be gleaned anywhere else. I’m so excited to showcase the league and the talented reporters, analysts and insiders on our team."

Andrews takes over after Nichols' show booted
That moment came following controversy surrounding Nichols and comments first leaked, in part, a year prior. The New York Times published an audio recording in which Nichols suggested former ESPN colleague Maria Taylor was elevated to her position because of a diversity effort by the company. Nichols is white and Taylor is Black.

Nichols, a longtime reporter for the company, did not know she was being recorded when it happened during the 2020 NBA bubble season in Orlando, Florida.

It caused internal strife in ESPN that bubbled to the surface during the NBA playoffs. After the report, ESPN removed Nichols from her position as sideline reporter for the NBA Finals coverage. Andrews took over.

ESPN later canceled the show and she will reportedly not appear on the network over the final year of her contract. Taylor left ESPN for NBC Sports during that time as her contract with ESPN had concluded.

And I’ll never forget that bullshit report she put out about Giannis, which led
to her getting removed as the Bucks’ beat reporter for ESPN. It was a while
back, but it posed as a red flag. And after all that bullshit she wrote about
Giannis leaving rumors, he stayed and signed a super max deal. Giannis
ignored her for quite some time.

Her NBA finals trophy presentation was amateurish to say the least.

I’m a fan of Maria Taylor, because her approach was very mature. It’s unfortunate

she didn’t spread any rumors. She wrote a story for which she spoke to multiple people and reported that him resigning hinged on the Bucks making improvements to reach the Finals…hence them giving up all they did for Jrue. Giannis was less than an hour removed from losing a Game 6 to the Raptors and was told that she was the reporter who wrote the article.

Here's the meat of the "report":

In more concrete terms, a source close to Antetokounmpo said that getting to the NBA Finals is not just an ambition, it could tip the scales as he weighs his contractual future.

That's some generic, non-specific ESPN clickbait.

She reported it as if it were factual, and didn’t verify any of it with Giannis.
So it was a damn rumor, and she reported it 20 minutes after the most
devastating loss of Giannis’ career.

It was a cheap move, and that’s why she was removed from covering the Bucks
for ESPN.

And the True Holiday acquisition came after last season, not after the season when
they lost to the Raptors. They picked up Eric Bledsoe after that season. They only
went after True because Bledsoe didn’t work out.

The irony of it all, she had to present the NBA trophy and MVP to him.
So, hopefully, her days of putting out BS reports are behind her.

I said improving the team to keep Giannis was the impetus for them giving up so much for Jrue.

She is now the main women covering basketball on ESPN, since the Maria Taylor
and Rachel Nichols situation, so those pre and post game finals interviews were
necessary.

And the situation occurred about 2 years ago.

Here is where Giannis walked out on her during the post game press conference.

As soon as she opened her mouth, he had a look of disgust and left the room.

How can you be a basketball guy and not know that this happened? It was a big
deal.

commentary is spin from jealous twitter reporters who wanted her job.

The very next season Malika basically became the main NBA reporter in the bubble and her star has continued to rise ever since. The Rachel/Maria drama just expedited things. Most players like her and enjoy talking to here as opposed to double-chinned, retweeting Brian Windhorst or corny ass Jorge Sedano who were probably the other options.

jealous of her. She ran with a BS report that was based on information

It was bush league journalism, and none of it was sourced from Giannis,

I’m referring to her ability as a journalists. It’s unpolished to me, so I prefer
the more polished journalists.

I said nothing about her looks or appearance, nor did I compare her
to a man.

I compared her JOURNALISM to her female peers.

"I prefer women to be polished or seasoned" makes it sound like you don't hold male journalists to the same standard. You could have simply said "I prefer journalists to be polished or seasoned."

Rachel's comments were fucked up and private thoughts are what many of us think of white liberals regardless. HOWEVER, she wasn't wrong to feel a sort of way for ESPN taking away her programming, she simply pointed her ire at the wrong source. It IS problematic that they put two women in a position to fight over the same spot, rather than make space for both. So Rachel gets slapped down and removed from the air, Maria moves on to greener pastures, and Malika slides in to replace. NOTHING was actually fixed, interrogated, or discussed at a deeper level.

Rachel was dumb for leaving her company equipment on and being recorded while she was talking shit about the company.

Malika was a rising star anyway and Rachel's blunder made is easier to slide her into the top slot.

Nothing really to discuss after that. Since the Jemele Hill situation they seem like they have been going out their way to push minorities and women to the forefront. If you're expecting any kind of apology that's just not going to happen. Its a cutthroat game.

not crying for her at all, i thought i made it clear that she done fucked up

let's keep in mind that WHEN she actually made the comment and when action was taken was VERY far apart. they let that shit fester among employees UNTIL the story was finally leaked.

>Nothing really to discuss after that. Since the Jemele Hill
>situation they seem like they have been going out their way to

Rachel is a woman and Maria is a Black woman. ESPN put them in a position to fight over a crumb. Instead of pushing to forefront, they are pitting them against each other.

>If you're expecting any kind of apology that's just not going to > happen. Its a cutthroat game.
Ain't about no apology. Throwing Black faces out in front is just window dressing. Letting Rachel move without sanction until someone blows up the spot is the culture that many have criticized it for.
None of what you said counters or contradicts anything that I said. It's kind of just...other stuff

ESPN didn't do anything, Rachel did their dirty work for them this time. She created the situation due to her own incompetence.

It would've been uncomfortable for Maria to take over her shit at this point so she moved on. I think NBC will be a good landing spot for her since she does football too. She's versatile enough to do multiple sports.

From what Rachel said, ESPN took her responsibilities and gave them to someone else. It SOUNDED (didn't see the paperwork obviously) like a contract issue in play, which is how she should have played it.

Not talking about Maria, for sure she needed to bounce. My point is they handle everything shitty so there is 0% chance that they won't do something equally shitty in the future because they slip off in the night blameless in a situation they created.

and for the record "seen her face" to me means you recognize her but she hasn't made an impact.

but seriously, can we stop making sideline reporting sound like the pinnacle of journalism? it is a shit, low IQ job, grunt work really. Jim Gray and Craig Sager (RIP) did it and the only reason people remember Craig is because of those godawful suits he started rocking, which was brilliant marketing. .000001 of those "interviews" ever get stored in the public consciousness.

Twitter is not okp.

if you see very strange things being said by people who you don't know, the best move is to not assume those things are being said by real actual people.

I've had people try to do this shit to me, and I'm not on TV.

do you remember MiQL? somebody tried to go after his wife iirc, over some local politics thing.

if you got $150 and a grudge you can get a lot, prolly for less now bc a lot of mfs are cut off from their russian networks

But there's a less toxic way to make that point.

Yes, some Black people with varying levels of self-hate date/have romantic relationships with white people. But I don't think anything Malinka has ever said rose to the point of personal character attacks of Black men. I know some men have different tolerances for criticism so what seems alright may not seem alright to others, so I may be out of touch.

There's a difference between attacking a Black man in power with the intent of bringing him down because of a personal vendetta and attempting to hold them accountable for poor/harmful behavior. Yes, Black men get attacked for no rational reason, even when their character is flawless. But in the case of Udoka, he did some real wrong from a professional standpoint. I think his actions are worthy of critique and examination, and Malinka's been pretty on-point with her rationale.

But if someone wants to critique Malinka's POV, that's fine. She's a journalist and that's fair.

But the use of the language allStah used to go at Malinka is unnecessarily personal and toxic to me. Maybe she is that way, but I think there are less disrespectful ways to make that point. That's all I meant by my earlier post.

The language I used was English, and I didn’t use any profanity.
I simply compared her character to that of another woman,
and rightfully so.

Her history speaks for itself. When she came on “ First Take” telling
SAS smith to “stop” on his own show, when she totally misconstrued what he
was referring to, she was completely out of line. She never/wouldn’t do that to
to a fellow white journalist. She also did it to Big Perk. She ignored him and cut him
off when he was giving his opinion on the Ime Udoka situation.

I’ll go back further than that when she was a beat reporter for ESPN.
She put out that BS report about Giannis leaving the Bucks on twitter, claiming that
an un-name source provided her with the info. Giannis intentionally ignored her
during a live press conference, and she was removed from being be the beat reporter
for the Milwaukee Bucks. What made that tweet so tacky was that she posted it right
after the Bucks were bounced from the playoffs. She didn’t care because he was a black
player. She wouldn’t have done that to a white player.

So my perception of her is spot on.

look, allstah aint shit and most of his post are trash but I faip to see how anything said was “toxic” language.

He said she was turning into a conservative like Sage Steele.

Didnt call her out of her name or say anything sexist. Just said she is on her way to being SS. Now maybe that is a loaded accusation but toxic language? C’mon..

What happened was that I scanned his message and had a purely emotional reaction to my reading of the tone of his message. I don't do that often and when I do, the post's message gets cloudy. But, like you said, there was nothing toxic about anything he typed.

I took offense to the notion that Malinka is a 'threat' to Black men/people because of her upbringing (being biracial/curly hair) or her dating preferences. (if that's the case Jemele is 'damaged' because she admitted to dating a white guy on her old podcast)

I thought the attempt to attack her in a way that wasn't related to anything related to her role as a journalist didn't seem necessary.

its part of the equation.

Look at the way Brett Favre is hiding in plain site with his scandal..

So yeah, as. Black man when I hear a TV personality dates white it does make me question if they will be fair and honest when discussing race or double standards with Black men.

and no, this doesn’t mean every person who has dated outside of their race is up for questioning but personally, when I hear someone dates white it does make me question the way they process stories about race.

its def a personal thing for me since I grew up trying to convert women like her who dated white. The convos on race were wild af with some of them. Could do the same thing as a white dude and my actions were “OMG, that is so disrespectful, how dare you say that” and the white dude would get a “oh Brad, you’re so crazy, lol”

but its whatever, I didn’t see the incel in his post, not a fan of people throwing that out in response to his post.

C'mon son, wtf does her hair have to do with this
and what black woman doesn't have curly hair

I actually watched a lot of ESPN's coverage on this story
I saw her jump out on Stephen A, and although I thought it wasn't exactly warranted
Stephen A plays the antagonist role intentionally
and he was hopping mad at BOS FO
I can see how a woman would be offended by him not keeping the same energy for Udoka
who he barely mentioned in his comments

We're also talking about inappropriate relationships/comments made in the workplace
If a hit dog barks, I'd bet this story hit home for Malika.

In a world where I'd have to choose between allstah and sage Steele for an ally...IDK fam, that's a tough choice.

Jay Williams took a more somber tone with Stephen A on first take...I think the same day
It felt like he was trying to be the voice of reason but couldn't get through to Stephen A
i.e. we don't know all the facts yet, let's hold off on pointing fingers
Stephen A just kept playing the hopping mad role
Which looked F'n comical when no one was willing to jump in the mud with him

Malika doesn’t express those actions towards white journalists or white players.

And regardless of what the situation is a person has a right to express him
or herself, and give their professional opinion on a subject.

Malika was unprofessional and out of line…..and most people know why,
even black woman are pushing back against her.

All you have to do is go on YouTube( not bots) and see tons of videos
of REAL people condemning her for her actions…even white men see it

https://youtu.be/g7TGFVHHKDI

You got people calling for her to be terminated, and to bring back Rachel Nichols.

Also, you choosing Sage Steele, who is a republican and supported Trump,
and gives zero care about the black community says a lot about you.

They were talking about title contenders on NBA today, and Doc said: “you guys always forget about Milwaukee, especially Malika….I don’t know what’s up with that..”

We all know the reason why…

Maybe it was just an innocent comment by Doc, but the whole league knew/knows about
the Giannis situation and her being removed from covering the Bucks.
