"Scottie Pippen called Phil Jackson racist. Lol."

https://twitter.com/dpshow/status/1409537922978754562

He was all over the place in that segment.

I don't know if that's the best point to convince people Phil is racist. Lol. I'm not sure how he was trying to support that point by mentioning Phil's book and the Kobe situation either.

I assume Phil isn't a raging racist (even though I don't know him) but if Scottie wanted to play that hand, he should have probably brought up Phil's comments about Lebron and NBA players' "posse" definitely highlighting some racial blindspots of his.

I can't tell if all of his recent comments are just part of a ploy to sell his book. But if they are, there were more convincing ways to drum up drama than these incoherent ramblings.

But Scottie seems hell bent on nailing himself inside his own coffin. Lol.

Add the gossip fodder with his ex wife and various other men, and Pip is going out sad right now.

Scottie's not "broke" but looking his current net work vs MJ's there's probably some resentment there aside from the "accolades"

He's making all these outlandish comments to line his pockets for the firewater he's selling. Sad he has to do this petty clout chasing to bring himself attention, but I guess that the life Scottie lives.

Now I'm curious what outlandish nonsense he's going to brandish to garner himself some healthy royalty checks when his book drops.

Probably is. Remember the "posse" comments about Lebron?

But I'm not sure calling a play for Kukoc and writing a book about coaching Kobe proves that at all. Scottie seems...not well.

And some of the Native American stuff came off as very Liz Warren-y. I don't know if I'd go so far as to paint him w/a broad 'racist' brush, but he's definitely got some unenlightened thoughts and opinions.

as hypersexual bucks with no ability to be functioning adults without their "handlers" managing every aspect of their lives.

It's particularly egregious coming from him because he obviously never saw the individual humanity of each black player while he was a player himself or a coach.

He basically did the exact opposite of what white players like Rex Champman, JJ Reddick, etc have done. Phil was surrounded by black people his entire adult life and somehow came away with a less complex or compassionate view of them. Yeah, he might be racist. Lol.

the way he went after Jordan.

And his comments about Phil aren’t that far fetched. I never liked the way he
treated Carmelo, Kobe, etc, and the comments he made....and this:

“Do you remember Phil Jackson left the Lakers and then wrote a book on Kobe Byrant and then came back and coached him? I mean, who would do that? You name someone in professional sports that would do that. I think he tried to expose Kobe in a way that he shouldn't have. You're the head coach. You're the guy who sits in the locker room and tells the players 'this is a circle, and everything stays within the circle, and that's what team is about.' But you as the head coach, opening up, and now you go out and try to belittle at that time one of the greatest players in the game?"

Some even blamed him for the Kobe/Shaq feud...putting two black men against
each other.

I always side-eyed Phil Jacksons success because dude had the best players in the game when he won those chips.

I know its hard to handle egos but FOH like dude didnt have MJ, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq in their prime.

and somehow people think that makes him cool or less racist?

they talked about it on sports radio and as soon as someone brought up his book from the 70’s people changed their tone real quick

That whole zen master Yoda in the wilderness shtick he had going was corny as fuck

But if Scottie Pippen wins a ring w that Jail Blazers squad I think his legacy is looked a bit differently and maybe he’d be slightly less bitter

Still can’t believe they blew a 15 point 4th quarter lead …that was 20 years ago god I feel old

It’s kinda sad a top 50 6 time champ hasn’t found peace yet and has to resort to shit like this

Spoiler warning if you didn't, but there's a chunk where Pippen refered to himself in the third person about six or seven times if memory serves me correct. I think I literally did the Macaulay Culkin Home Alone face at that part of the interview.

Also, at the part when Pippen said he didn't have a problem with calling Phil a racist, there is a split second when Dan Patrick actually froze up.

I won't crack any jokes about his possible mental decline, but I sure he'll unleash even more bizarre comments when his book drops. Reading in between the lines, I doubt Pippen will have any qualms in terms of burning bridges by throwing shade of former teammates, so I think this Phil Jackson talk is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm certain he'll drop it right around the time when the next regular season starts just to maximize those first week sales.

1. As kayru said, Phil is definitely a liberal racist. I’m surprised people don’t remember his questionable comments from the past, but I guess that’s the benefit of winning a shitload of rings. And every time he goes on and on about Native American stuff I roll my eyes. Easily the most cringeworthy stuff in The Last Dance.

2. Scottie is in a mad dash to fix all the misconceptions about him after The Last Dance and it’s pretty sad to watch. I get why Pippen was mad about the Kukoc play in the moment, but the play worked, and it’s not a very convincing argument to prove Phil’s racism.

if and when Phil Jackson does respond to this, he'll make more of a fool of himself than Pippen did on the Dan Patrick interview.

Do folks remember when Phil sympathized and compared himself to Donald Trump roughly two or three years ago? I think this was in reference to something Carmelo Anthony had said about his time with the Knicks, but I could be wrong.

It's funny when the only two settings are "racist" and "not racist"

It will be even more amusing to see this sort of reductive non-thought applied more broadly.

Did anyone here ever useda derogatory word for homosexuals as an insult? Or use a word for women's genitalia to describe someone as being weak?

I certainly have before. It was a normal thing in the times I lived and the homophobic and misogynist society I grew up in. But am I, by default, a homophobe and misogynist?

By the logic being employed in this thread the answer would be a simple yes.

Phil Jackson is an old white man from Montana. Not shocking that his ideas of Native American culture and "wisdom" are cringeworthy in 2021. Nor that he clearly has classic old white liberal blind spots about his own white priviledge and race in general.

Is it worth interrogating that? 100%

Does that mean that Phil Jackson goes in a big pile that says "racist" along with everyone from Donald Trump to Klan members to Lena Dunham not casting any black people in Girls?

Not even going to get into Pippen because he is just trying to turn a dollar and we can all see it for what it is.

I mean, shit...a quick trip through the archives will demonstrate what was socially acceptable to say not even long ago.

But that said, I think a lot of the current climate is about people - and most specifically straight white people - really need to examine what exists inside of them strictly from a institutional standpoint. It used to be pretty common to say, "There isn't a racist bone in my body" and actually mean it. Now if someone says that...it's pretty much confirmation there are quite a few racist bones in their body.

And I say all of that to say that Phil has never exactly adjusted to the times. I assume he won't this time, either.

One of the things that comes with being a leader is being put under more scrutiny than most. With added power comes added responsibility. With that being the case, I have no problems with Phil's words being put under a spotlight, especially since the man is called the great coach of all times by some. I've said this more than one time of this message board, but it doesn't make sense for folks that are given high accolades to be able to get away with not being held to a high standards with their flaws as well. That just doesn't make sense to me.

The man was the President of Basketball Operations for the Knicks and for whatever reasons wanted to talk badly about LeBron James while LeBron had not a damn thing to do with New York Knicks in any shape, form, or fashion other than having to play against them. The racial angle to the critique Phil had on LeBron made Phil look even more foolish and unwise.

Please show me where I did anything close to saying that Phil should not be critiqued?

Actually I can show you where I did the opposite.

What I said was that the critique happening in the thread lacked nuance and reflected a society wide trend towards flattening critiques instead of deepening them.

and I suppose we're at the point where we can use the words internet/social media and society interchangeably.

which is another problem in of itself.

he has some really bad takes and views regarding Black folk.

part of the problem is old white coaches from his era really view grown men as kids because they play a game.

and lets be real, when it comes to homophobia most people say these things because they don’t actually know gay people personally. Phil was around Black people all damn day and came away with the typical racist descriptions.

Yes he has

More likely, because they are from a different generation and the shift in values and norms can be difficult to absorb. How many people of all stripes and colors told my generation we needed to pull our pants up? My own mother included.

Not excusing Phil's comments or the latent racism within them, but that is part of the actual context.

Meanwhile, RAPPERS of a MY generation went on to make songs about not wearing jeans too tight because, well, we know why don't we?

>
>and lets be real, when it comes to homophobia most people say

Not true, homophobes had/have gay kids, brothers and co-workers and they always did. Black church full of gay people and the pastor is up there preaching homophobia. Perhaps this kept more of them in the closet but people disowned and mistreated their own children.

Also, many people who DID NOT consider themselves homophobic, still use(d) language rooted in homophobia. Jay-Z's mom is gay but I'm pretty sure I heard him use the word faggot and make other homophobic allusions in his past work.

The point is not to give Phil Jackson a pass. The point is to dig deeper than "racist" and "not racist".

throwing the word f@ggot around.

As we get older we tend to grow and look back and say “damn, I was immature”

but Phil was older. This wasn’t Phil in his 20’s. This was Phil in his 50’s saying insensitive shit.

As far as the homophobe goes tho, I think there are levels to it. We may have know. someone in the church but we didnt actually sit down and get to know them.

I had my views gays and it was the typical hip hop view. Grew up with a few too. But I married a woman who is a dance choreographer so once I head some real convos that weren’t surface level it changed my views. But sure, if you just have the fay cousin or the choir director that you laugh at but never truly chop it up to see they are real ass people who just want to live their lives it usually changes most people’s thinking.

Not sure we really disagree on the homophobe part but my point is if you just keep it surface level you will remain ignorant.. and IMO that can paint you as a homophobe and if you refuse to dig deeper.. you will continue to be viewed as such.

In response to Reply # 0

Jordan did him dirty, going out of his way to portray Scottie as a bad teammate and re-airing dirty laundry that should've stayed within that Bulls family. All for petty reasons: to try and further elevate Jordan's stature.

The truth is: Scottie was under-appreciated on a massive scale. When Jordan played baseball, the Bulls record was almost identical with Scottie as the leader - as they experienced very little drop-off and were a blown call away from winning the Eastern Conf and returning to the Finals - sans MJ.

Pip was legitimately a top 3 player in his prime, and was a legitimate MVP candidate the year MJ went to play baseball. Yet we never really see Pippen get his due commensurate with his value as *the* glue guy that cleaned up all the corners for that Bulls dynasty and enabled Jordan to specialize so often on volume scoring without having to carry the rebounding/play-making/two-way wing load that Scottie took on.

When you also consider the absolute disrespect that Bulls ownership showed Scottie by taking advantage of his situation to criminally under-pay him -- I'm not surprised at all that Scottie is now going scorched earth against Phil, Krause, Reinsdorf, MJ and everyone else. Pip has always taken the high road - but I think the patent disrespect MJ showed Pippen in the Last Dance was Scottie's Last Straw.

Dude is probably the most underrated all time great in basketball.
He did more things on the court for that Bulls run than anyone else.
He's held his toungue and played nice for decades just for Jordan to shit on him on the Jordan documentary>
There's no reason for him to toe the line anymore

October 1999:

"I don't mean to say as a snide remark toward a certain population in our society, but they have a limitation of their attention span, a lot of it probably due to too much rap music going in their ears and coming out their being."

He basically called the entire African American Community a population
with a low attention span due to listening to hip hop music.

October 2005

"I think it's important that the players take their end of it, get out of the prison garb and the thuggery aspect of basketball that has come along with hip-hop music in the last seven or eight years."

Even Scoop Jackson did an article in the early 2000s on Phil Jackson’s
inappropriate comments about African Americans, and that he would no longer
support Phil.

how the hell does THAT walk? I mean shit it's as bad as anything limbaugh, tucker, o'reilly and them have ever said. man DAMN. i mean this is ever worse than eminem's recording on wax after his black gf broke up with him. like has anyone EVER taken him to task for this? Donald Sterling triggered a series of events that led to him having him divested of team ownership for saying shit in the same neighborhood.

white people be drunk on they power yo...shameful that his former Black players didn't call him out.

Much of it is from not appreciating that racism is a structure and actions contribute to it or dismantle it. Phil didn't do much to combat racism, just because he coached some Black men to titles. Connecting with Dennis Rodman was more about getting an eccentric figure to buy in to the team concept than addressing the generational trauma that made him suicidal.

In response to Reply # 0
Fri Jul-02-21 06:55 AM by allStah

“Horry admits that he doesn’t think Jackson is racist on his podcast, “Big Shot Bob Pod.” However, he did mention that Jackson once used a questionable phrase when speaking to his players.

“We were in the huddle and Phil was like, ‘You need to know the sound of your master’s voice,'” Horry said. “I looked at him, I was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, nah, we don’t do that. I’m from the South.'”

There is no situation or time in life where that phrase is acceptable or allowed,
so that phrase is unacceptable. What’s crazy, is that the players allowed him to
escape that situation without confronting him about it.

Can you imagine a white coach saying that to Lebron, Paul, Kawhi or any other
player in this day and age? The coach would be immediately terminated.

when as a basketball player he wrote a book degrading the way black players
played the game and made disparaging comments about the communities they
come from.

Why would he even make comment like that? I swear when some
white people get old they let their true feelings go and stop giving
a fock about civility.

Give most coaches MJ, Kobe, Pippen and Shaq and you are going to win

never liked him but it never had anything to do with his racism. Had no idea this is who he is but I’m never shocked when a white coach is a racist POS. I’m shocked when they aren’t.

this goes back to my childhood. White coaches have always made decisions partially based on race. Being able to control Black athleticism and benefit from it.. or ruin Black players chances at advancing the moment they don’t follow marching orders

Had a Black coach in 9th grade.. man, that was the best year of my life as an athlete. I would run through a brick wall for coach Hawk. The rest of my coaches were Italian assholes.
