I get it. You getting swept at home and nothing you can do. You're pissed. made a bad move. Gotta pay for it. Such is life.

Still, even if Joker stayed in, the Nuggets were staying home last night. Suns had too much for 'em.

..I can't speak to his intent, but Joker's actions on the play (and after) were uncalled for and unprofessional. That combo is what got him ejected. MVP or not, he lost his cool in a tough loss.

In response to Reply # 2
Mon Jun-14-21 06:08 PM by allStah

He provided no actions after. Booker rushed him and got in his face,
and Joker stood his ground. That’s why Booker was issued a technical foul.
Anyone else would have pushed Booker out of the way.

It was a bad call by the officials. He went to make an intentional common foul,
but due to the wind up, it turned it into a hard foul. It should have simply been
upgraded to a flagrant one.

get ejected

Can’t say he flopped

There was contact

But I find it hard to believe a mush with a Joker pillow soft bicep could put a grown man on the ground for that long

After alladat...he just popped up and went back to playing ball.

But IRT the ‘after actions’...what was he supposed to do

Whole team rushed him and he just stood his ground
Didn’t raise his hands or voice
Just took the shoves...can’t see the problem there.

winning reactions by these players, I don't ever recall guys laying out on the floor this long after contact. Not to be the old man yelling at the clouds but in the 90's guys would take way worse hits and run back down the court lol.

I remember earlier in the season Jimmy Butler peaking and smirking to see what the officials were doing

does that shit annoy anyone else ?

"calling out" players...issuing challenges etc

I wonder how many players truly rock with him or if they just tolerate him bc hes the most visible sports voice in America right now (is that even debatable?)

It’s certainly annoying, but I think players just learn to tune that shit out to a certain degree. You have to if you wanna remain sane. I hate the hot take culture ESPN has cultivate by turning every show into a shittier version of PTI. They’re so desperate for views and it shows.

Obviously he's going to be prone to something else happening...but I guess it's a calculated risk on his end. Really hope he's ok to go - you would hate to see him lose sight of the bigger picture.

That said, these dudes roll to a title if he can actually play.

if i'm not mistaken he asked to be subbed out almost immediately after feeling something was off when he was returning from the initial injury. this was around the time they got LMA. harden signaled to nash to call a time out and was walking to the bench while the ball was still in play. he's the kind to play through minor bang-ups but i doubt he'll pull a KD or AD and overextend

I know this is the place for agendas, but several of these dudes just objectively do not deserve their spot.

Luka over Dame and Paul is straight up great white hope shit. And Okaysports being okay with it will never make sense to me.

Kyrie? Lebron? Is there not a standard of games played for these teams?

No Book, Tatum?

And if number of games doesn't matter apparently, Harden? Mitchell?

What an odd popularity contest these have turned into.

-missed pullup three that he took for no reason

-missed fadeaway on an injured James Harden

-missed crucial free throw

-fumbled easy pass/dunk and turnover

Even aside from that, his inability to improve his game outside of three feet from rim is astounding.

... then goddamn, they're going to be in really good shape to potentially go the distance. Milwaukee is imo the most dangerous team left in the East for them, because neither Atlanta nor Philly can pretend to defend Brooklyn.

playing in Brooklyn for some reason...like no matter what happens, they're gonna dump the game/don't believe they can win there. Could spell curtains even if they take the next.

Giannis is clearly getting outclassed by KD. Not very surprising, one guy has the championship experience, just is what it is. Giannis definitely needs to defend KD in the 4th quarter at least. They're scared of the foul trouble, but it just needs to be done at this point.

Bud shouldn't allow Steve Nash to outcoach him, not a good look.

Holiday is out of sorts...not playing nearly as confidently as he was in the regular season.

I'm wondering why Portis isn't getting any tick. Too much PJ; he's washed.

waiting for. At some point Giannis needs to look Bud in the eye and say "I got KD!" whether he fouls out or not we need to see that shit. This mf won DPOY a year ago and doesn't guard KD once and they are basically the same size?

he is showing things in these playoffs that I wish he could have done
in the regular season. His Harden-esque foul hunting really made him look like some bullshit.

However, like Harden, doing the things that makes him a great player after a situational change can change opinions real quick.

NATE HELPIN'.
Next year he better get COY if the Hawks do this again.

back to James Harden. I am continually impressed by his Nets makeover. From a foul hunting bore to one of the relatively quietest anchors in the league.

and KD better have his "put the team on the back moments". Nets really need him to do that.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I thought Harden flopped on that phantom face hit but PJ dead ass Jon Jonesed him in the eye! The last angle shows how wet that finger got

I don't know who is a worse post-game Uncle Jeff or KD. Wonder if there's just bad feelings towards the booth because of Chuck's repeated dumb ass comments

Still don't think BKN takes Game 6 in mil. Do they sit Harden and just lay down and pray for the best outcome in Game 7?

Was kinda dead in there at the start (notoriously slow starting arena)

But I've seen enough comebacks at Barclays I felt strongly that when the crowd got hype at the end of the 3rd that the team would get that boost finally

What happened with Giannis this time? Just now finding out after Kyrie people kinda view him as dirty

the Brooklyn Nets defensive 'attack' would expose the Bucks and mainly Giannis' poor offensive habits so terribly.

It was literally hard to watch the Bucks operate in half court sets during the last two games. Such ugly, abysmal basketball.

I forgot about Embiid. But seeing the condition that he finished last game in...I could see it being about him and tearing that meniscus even more. They put a lot of load on him even with the injury. At least Harden was dialing back the effort and nursing his leg.

at this point I think this is being done out of an extreme abundance of caution. You can't let the arena fill up and then pretend like you're going to pull the star player for ambiguously defined protocol reasons.

The player's union should try to remove this from being a clause in player's contracts. It's a shame votes from sports media should dictate what a player can potentially earn, especially since there's a narrow window for players to maximize their relative earning potential. Incentives based on hard stats I can understand since there's no subjectivity allowed with hard numbers, but awards are a whole other matter.

your CP3s and Brons of the world. i dont really feel sorry for them this is the league they wanted.

also Tatum didnt make it because of a voting quirk.
listed in 2 positions and he got more Forward votes than Guard votes so that's where he's counted

even though his Guard total was higher than Kyrie's and wouldve made it.

How many games did he start where there weren't two of Kemba, Smart, and Jaylen Brown on the floor? Gotta be single digits.

We've really gotta just get rid of the positions for All-NBA teams, since the NBA is increasingly going positionless, but I reckon that's a different conversation.

Quick google - looks like right now, Dame and Draymond have committed, and Beal looks likely.

Anyway, hope I'm wrong but this feels disastrous. Between the injuries this whole season, then more stars going to the Olympics, then another shortened offseason just seems like an even worse idea than the 70 something day offseason of this year.

Now? He’s likely staying with the Clippers.

i want to say it's because of the quick turnaround and packed schedule but at the same time the league was postponed for four months or whatever it was last spring. so guys did get some rest.

Especially the ascendence of these new players on the big stage.

That's what you want to see.

I kinda think these injuries will make players even more cautious,
making them want to sit out more during the regular season.

Because there's no question that, in Milwaukee, Giannis holds more power. And I certainly don't imagine, if Giannis *wanted* to guard KD or run more advantageous offensive sets for him, he wouldn't just defer to Bud if Bud insisted going the other way.

I just can't imagine Bud choosing to run plays for Giannis to launch 3s or off-balance fadeaway jumpers. And I can't imagine him choosing willingly to put Giannis on Joe Harris and old-ass PJ Tucker on KD.

I mean, either way, it's a bad look for both. But only one of these people would lose their job if it continues.

I think they'd be foolish to fire Bud unless they have a home run option waiting in the wings-- and I have no clue who that'd be-- but being the best regular season coach in the NBA for the duration of his Milwaukee tenure might not matter after a strange and sorry performance like this.

So if they lose, especially in Milwaukee next game, it'll almost certainly be a "you're gone" or "you have one more chance next season, but then you're gone if you don't deliver."

But like I said, unless there's some home run guy they have secretly planned to sign already, they should be careful what they wish for when it comes to a coaching change.

as far as I know the NBA doesn't give out regular season trophies. If you have the best regular season yet repeatedly struggle in the playoffs your usually gone after few years.

Doc Rivers got fired after 1 season with the Clippers.

This is 100% true, but it's been only three years-- all three seasons of which were the best in 35 years for the Bucks, and two seasons of which were Top 4 All-Time in Bucks history.

Again, I'm not saying he *shouldn't* be fired after such a sorry playoff performance this year... but I am definitely saying they should be careful what they wish for. Clipper fans in this playoffs have been *wishing* they had Doc (who has five of the seven best seasons in Clipper history and three of the top four) making the calls instead of Lue.

That said, as I said before, maybe the Bucks have been chatting with someone behind closed doors that's an absolute slam dunk hire. No clue who that would be, but we'll see, I suppose.

(Unless the Bucks win the next two games and win the East. In which case, everyone will conveniently forget the "fire Bud" talk. Because that's just how it goes, lol. Small sample size can create short memories one direction or the other.)

But as I said above, unless they know they have a guy better than Bud, getting rid of a coach after one ECF and two ECF Semis because they think they can do instantly better at a franchise that's made only two ECFs in the last 35 seasons... yeah, this is a big "be careful what you wish for" situation.

Could work out, obviously, and maybe they fail it's worth the gamble... but I think there are more scenarios where it doesn't work out than where it does.

outside have said the way they use Giannis is flawed so why wouldn't they give a different coach a shot with Giannis just entering his prime? Its not like they're going to stop making the playoffs without Bud as long as Giannis is healthy. Sometimes a different voice is needed.

I'm not saying they wouldn't or even that they shouldn't. But so often, stars on teams expected to win move to new coaches when they can't get over that hump, and more often than not, it's just not the coach that's the problem, lol.

I realize the coach is the head on the chopping block because Giannis is the highest paid man in the organization and they're fully committed to keeping Giannis happy... but I'm not convinced Bud, who's now taken two different teams that rarely ever make the ECF to the ECF, is the reason Giannis is chucking 3s, chucking fadeaway jumpers, and bricking free throws.

But yes, maybe Giannis will listen more to somebody new. Or he won't. Only one way for them to find out, I reckon. They better have a really good name in mind if that's what they're thinking about doing.

the org with his current contract, I don't know how his relationship with Bud is but he has want to see a different result and I'm sure he has people in his ear.

Let's not try to act like Bud is Popovich or somebody.

Mike Woodson took the Hawks and the Knicks to the playoffs and he's coaching in college now.

That said, even though it's a player's league and a coach can be relatively lame duck when it comes to the power structure against a star player (especially in a smaller market), if the star's making shitty choices or failing to develop in certain ways, it'll always fall back onto a coach.

I think it ranks 3rd in terms of all-time greatness in the past ten years (only trailing LeBron's game 6 v. Boston in 2012, and LeBron's game 1 v. GSW in 2018).

To see KD play all 48 minutes and just flat-out outwill Giannis and the Bucks in that manner was something beyond special. Especially when you consider that they were down by nearly 20 in the first half.

I heard someone make the argument today that KD is now on the Mt. Rushmore of wings - and I have to agree. In terms of flat-out volume scoring ability? He's one of the top 3 of all-time, in any era.

Guard or wings that can create their own shots when the needed.

Ben just has nothing in the half court... Tobias isn't a shot creator...

They just don't have the weapons

Simmons' one-dimensional ass for Harden when that was floated.

Obviously Harden is hurt now, but damn.

They should have dealt Simmons when he could have returned value. I don't think many teams make that deal now- especially after this meltdown.

Dude hasn't even practiced his free throws.

Is the Sixers' Offense Good Enough to Win a Title?
May 23, 2021

As the top seed in the East, the Sixers have a path to the conference finals that looks strewn with rose petals rather than choked with thorns. Their route avoids the gnarlier side of the bracket with Brooklyn and Milwaukee, and, unlike in the West, there is no team with a championship pedigree slumming within the ranks of mangy play-in dogs. Philadelphia is healthy and well-rested. Since clinching the best record in the conference with a win against Orlando, the starters have had nine days to marvel at Furkan Korkmaz’s torrential drip and binge local child-murder comedy The Mare of Easttown between games.

From all appearances, the Sixers are capable of winning the franchise’s first chip since 1983. They have an MVP candidate in Joel Embiid, a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Ben Simmons, a borderline All-Star in Tobias Harris, and an army of solid role players. Philly finished with the NBA’s second-best defense, two-tenths of a point behind the pace-setting Lakers. The team went 27-7 at home and 27-5 when the starting lineup was together. In a bootleg season perverted by coronavirus protocols and injuries, the Sixers were denied measuring-stick showdowns against teams like the Nets, Bucks, or Clippers, but there is no concrete evidence that anyone is better than they are.

It is hard to believe the Sixers’ charmed 2021 season came on the heels of such a disappointing one. Last year’s squad was a mutation of furrowed brows, bulging shoulders, belches, and farts. They wedged two centers and two power forwards into the starting unit, rarely took 3-pointers, turned the ball over a lot, and labored to score in the halfcourt. Everyone hated Al Horford, who was honestly fine. According to numbers from Cleaning the Glass that dispose of garbage time, the 2020 Sixers finished 12th in the NBA in points per possession.

But that blighted era of futility is over. Brett Brown, the coach hand-selected by Sam Hinkie to cultivate his organizational tree into fruition, was finally shoved out. With a retooled roster, a new coaching staff, and a crafty Director of Basketball Operations, professional roundball in Philadelphia has entered an age of enlightenment and innovation. An attack force of leaky triremes has been replaced by destroyers and nuclear submarines. Unlike last season, the current Sixers rank a glorious, uh, hmm, well, 13th in points per possession.

How is it possible that Philly went 49-23, smartly added a bunch of complementary parts, and boasted a center who spent the season devouring opposing bigs like Titan Cronus—while getting slightly worse offensively in proportion to the rest of the NBA? And, more importantly, is the 13th-ranked offense good enough to win a title? Since the 2004 Pistons, no team with an offense ranked lower than Philly’s has carried home a ring.

This is not a call for doomerism, kings and queens! Far from it. There are many reasons for optimism. Unlike last season, a haphazardly-assembled roster does not present an unsolvable puzzle. The Sixers have two All NBA-caliber studs and a legion of shooters to fan out around them. There is an array of useful ball-handlers and perimeter chuckers who can hop on the floor without compromising the defense. In terms of personnel, there is no good explanation for why the Sixers have not been better at scoring this season.

At times, Philly has shown the ability to get buckets at an exceptionally high level. In the first half of the season, the starting lineup had an offensive rating of 120.1 (as a comparison, the Nets set an NBA record with an offensive rating of 117.3 this year). Over a 15 game stretch starting on January 1st and ending at the All-Star break, it mushroomed to 122.9. When playing its best ball, the starting crew had Embiid marauding in the paint, Simmons shredding transition defenses, Harris slashing to the hoop, and Seth Curry and Danny Green spotting up for 3s. After last season’s swampy congestion, the newfound spacing was a breeze of cleansing oxygen.

Yet in the 268 minutes that starting group has shared the floor since the All-Star intermission, the Sixers have posted an offensive rating of 114.1. The unit’s net rating remains fantastic due to spectacular defense, but the scoring hiccup dovetails with the eye test. In halfcourt sets, Simmons spends more time rotting in the dunker spot and Embiid is hovering more around the perimeter—as a consequence, both players have scored less efficiently and drawn fewer fouls in the second half. With more possessions funneled into the hands of perimeter players who are not snappy decision-makers, the Sixers have resurrected some of the stinky phantoms from last year’s constipated offense.

Philly coach Doc Rivers has been credited as the “Tobias Whisperer” and his sweet nothings helped unlock Harris as a consistent offensive threat in an impressive variety of roles. In a season with dizzying league-wide scoring inflation, his 19.5 points per game places 33rd among qualifying players and his True Shooting Percentage has jumped from average to excellent. Harris has been very good at doing whatever he has been asked to do. At the same time, his presence as Rivers’ security blanket has unfolded in ways that do not necessarily benefit the greater mission.

In the second half of the season, Harris is dribbling more and posting up nearly twice as much. Meanwhile, his catch-and-shoot 3s have dwindled from 3.1 attempts per game to 1.6 an outing. A guy who drills those shots at 43.2% should be hoisting up more, not fewer. Lineups with Embiid, Simmons and Harris have been wonderful, registering a net rating of +15.2 in 1,929 possessions. But surprisingly enough, when Harris is removed from that trio, the numbers get even better: groups with only Embiid and Simmons are +18.9, placing them in the 99th percentile of all lineups with 100 possessions played. Despite the endless fixation from Sixers Nation on acquiring ball-handlers and guys who do stuff, the Sixers’ easiest recipe for success is still Embiid, Simmons, and three shooters. Dumb it down, lads.

While Embiid is an MVP candidate, the Sixers have still not figured out how to optimize Simmons. The team lacks a backup center who can chuck up a handful of treys like Horford, and Simmons has gotten gummed up aside fellow non-shooter Dwight Howard. In the first half, he averaged 7.6 assists, 13.7 potential assists, and 20.4 points created off assists per game, similar to what he posted in each of the previous three seasons. But after the break, those numbers dropped to 6.1 assists, 11.5 potential assists, and 16.5 points created off assists—all of which represent career lows when compared to every season of his career. When you have a dude who was the most efficient creator of points via scoring and assists in the NBA last season, taking the ball out of his hands is not wise policy.

There is an inclination to blame Simmons’ dimmed brilliance on contemporized euphemisms about wanting it more—a crisis of “confidence” or a deficiency of “aggressiveness”—but he is not a quixotic riddle. If you clear the lane and give Simmons the ball, he will play like a superstar. Use him as a screener and traditional post player a la Brandon Bass or Big Baby Davis, and he will not. Sixers’ executive Daryl Morey has suggested on several occasions that the team could deploy Simmons as a heliotropic point-center, which hints at why he acquired deadly spot-up shooters like Curry, Green, and George Hill. “There’s a chance to play really unique, uptempo, sort of spacing, shooting lineups ,” Morey said after last November’s draft. For whatever reason, they have not.

Like teens with a ouija board, the Sixers summon demons by their own trembling hands and then avoid taking a shortcut through the cemetery. They refuse to experiment with non-traditional lineups, despite center-less, Simmons-led units posting a respectable 110.3 defensive rating in 419 possessions. They decline to play Matisse Thybulle serious minutes, despite him being one of the most uniquely disruptive defenders ever (when he is with Embiid and Simmons, groups have an offensive rating of 119.3 and a net rating of +10.4). The team’s four best defensive players—Embiid, Simmons, Thybulle, and Green—have only shared the court for 76 possessions, mostly in late-game situations where guards toggle on and off the floor between timeouts. Philly is undoubtably leaving money on the table.

Rivers deserves credit for overseeing a throttling defense and creating an atmosphere where players unselfishly inhabit their roles for the sake of the collective organism. Doc is a legend and he rules. But his hesitancy to get a bit freaky (no kink-shaming) has left the Sixers without a reliable offensive unit that does not include Embiid. As goofily joyful as Howard has been, a contender’s lineups and rotations should not be molded around the contours of a 35-year old backup center with the most negative on/off splits in the rotation. The team’s best players will be on the court even more in the playoffs, but the specter of Greg Monroe posting a -9 plus/minus in 101 seconds of Game 7 action against the Raptors lingers as a bearded reminder of squandered opportunity.

Are the Sixers good enough to win a title playing conservatively? Probably. This is a very good team that will only need to defeat two legitimate contenders to claim the throne. It is there for the taking. Regular season strategies will inform how Philly operates in the postseason, but they should not act as boundaries. There will inevitably be moments where showing more creativity and nimbleness could be the difference between another excruciatingly toxic offseason and capping a magnificent campaign with the ultimate prize. There is still plenty of time to get weird.

Nearly 50% of SLC is Mormon, so again, lack of black folks isn't too surprising.

I've been to SLC twice, both for a quick stop while heading to other places. The people were super nice (they're Mormon and I'm white, so again, not surprising). The beer laws were antiquated beyond belief (again, not surprising). Nice enough city, though.

The Athletic seems to stop just sort of saying so.

2 seasons and 3 coaches may do that but that team has another all star and a flurry of picks. NOLA has not been good, but any place he would be traded to would be completely stripped of all assets. Not sure what the plan here is.

The Lonzo situation is what it is - but any team building around BI and Zion with draft assets are in a position for long term success. They have underperformed, but not by much - and they feel like a similar situation to where the Suns were at the last couple years. They'd be smart to wait before being rash.

Bledsoe and Steven Adams are making 35-40 mil each of the next two seasons. That's a lot of salary for guys who aren't terribly positive impact guys. Adams definitely helps the defense (at least he did second half of the year), but he clogs the lane and diminishes Zion's offensive impact, and he slows down the tempo of the team. And Bledsoe was pretty dreadful all year-- he was essentially the playoff Bledsoe that Milwaukee couldn't wait to ditch from the moment he arrived in New Orleans.

Now, Phoenix had Rubio and Oubre, so it's not like having useless money on the books while your younger talent is developing is a huge negative... but the timeline isn't optimal in New Orleans's case. Phoenix already had Booker signed to the max and had more years on Ayton's rookie deal-- they could afford to take their time. New Orleans really wants Zion to sign an extension before the 2023 season-- Zion hits RFA 2023 and can be gone after that season if he wants. So if they don't make some progress toward becoming a winning team in 21/22, that... could end up a very tense situation for the Pels.

The Pels also don't really have an effective bench right now. They played a lot of young guys, so yeah, maybe that'll pay dividends eventually... but Jaxson Hayes hasn't improved. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who I like, saw his minutes increase so his stats did too... but his efficiency didn't improve very much. Naji Marshall was fine as a rookie, but he shouldn't be playing as much as he did. James Johnson played 25 minutes a game. They'll probably lose Josh Hart in free agency. Unless they win the lottery, I don't see them getting an immediate high impact player around pick 10 in this year's draft.

Like... there's gonna be a serious depth problem on this roster unless they sign some free agents or unless the young guys seriously start to come around.

And I don't disagree with Zion putting pressure on the franchise to make moves. I totally get that his flexibility is now, so it makes sense that he's using his leverage - but I have to think long term him and BI are better than any tandem he'd be traded to right?

Or they were with SVG, anyhow. And the way they double crossed JJ definitely made Zion mad (as it should).

They’re both signed for 3+ years, so they can’t realistically demand trades— besides, there’s still time for NO to turn the roster around, and neither player is in his prime yet.

But I think they’re making it known that they shouldn’t fuck around in the front office in the next year or two. Definitely they’re making it clear they want New Orleans to resign Lonzo. I think it’d be smart for NO to not piss off their two stars, lol.

That's within their right, they can do business however they want, they sign the checks... but as JJ said, it's gonna affect the Pels' relationship with that agency, and it's clearly affected their relationship with Zion, per The Athletic's article.

I still think BI and Zion take that leap next year. BI will also be an all star, and they'll make the playoffs.

I firmly believe that, at least from a talent/trajectory standpoint.

But they need to fix this shit ASAP.

Resign ZO. They have enough assets to make a serious play for someone out there on the market too.

239. "ESPN INSIDER - Nba injuries swinging postseason"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/31647504/nba-playoffs-2021-star-injuries-swinging-postseason-daily-basis

NBA playoffs 2021: These star injuries are swinging the postseason on a daily basis

By now you've probably seen the stat that more All-Stars have missed games in this year's NBA playoffs (eight) than any before on record, per Elias Sports Bureau research, beating the previous record of six.

But that only begins to describe the impact injuries have had on a postseason unlike any other.

Whether it's those playing through injuries (including MVP runner-up Joel Embiid and former winner James Harden), players hoping to come back soon (All-Stars Mike Conley Jr. and Kyrie Irving) or those whose status going forward remains uncertain (led by Kawhi Leonard, who's been perhaps the most valuable player in the playoffs), injury news has dominated the NBA landscape this week and all postseason long.

A high number of injuries occurring in the playoffs
Instead of looking just at All-Star players, the method I've used to look at playoff injuries is games missed by players who averaged at least 25 minutes per game in the playoffs (or the regular season, if they missed the entire playoffs because of injury).

By those standards, the 2021 playoffs have already seen more games missed due to injury than almost any before the past five years.

Through Wednesday's Game 5s of the conference semifinals, the 70 games missed by qualifying players due to injury were tied for fourth most since 1978.

NBA Playoff Games Missed Due To Injury
YEAR GAMES MISSED
2020 108
2015 85
2018 78
2001 70
2021 70
* Among players with
25+ minutes per game
The distribution of injuries has been somewhat different than last year's resumption of play in the bubble, the current high-water mark for games missed by regulars in the playoffs. In 2020, a large percentage of those injuries were suffered prior to the start of the playoffs, with 12 players missing their teams' entire postseason run -- including Irving and Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons.

Despite the high number of injuries during the regular season, the league's stars actually reached the playoffs in relatively decent health. Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics is the lone All-Star to miss the entire playoffs because of injury. (Donovan Mitchell also missed the opening game before being cleared to return from an ankle sprain.)

Already, 10 players who have averaged at least 25 minutes per game have missed at least one game because of an injury suffered in the playoffs. That's one shy of the all-time high, which came in 2017, and two more than last year's playoffs. And that group doesn't include two injured starters, Donte DiVincenzo of the Bucks and Danny Green of the 76ers, who fell just shy of the minutes threshold in part because they were injured early in games.

Kawhi Leonard is one of many stars to miss games due to injury during the NBA playoffs. Adam Pantozzi/NBAE via Getty Images

The healthiest team typically wins the title
Injuries playing a key role in deciding the NBA playoffs is nothing new. In 2016, I found that just two champions since 1978 had a player who averaged at least 25 minutes per game in the playoffs miss more than two games because of injury. Since then, the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors (Andre Iguodala) have joined the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (Toni Kukoc) and 2011-12 Miami Heat (Chris Bosh) as three champions overcoming a long-term injury to a key player suffered in the playoffs over the past 43 years.

There's a good chance we'll add a fourth team to the list next month.

Of the seven remaining active teams, three already qualify: the Atlanta Hawks (De'Andre Hunter), Nets (Harden) and Utah Jazz (Mike Conley). The Clippers will join them if Leonard misses a third game and the 76ers might also if Green returns and averages more than 25 minutes per game the rest of the playoffs. That leaves the Bucks (down DiVincenzo) and Phoenix Suns (who on Wednesday saw All-Star point guard Chris Paul enter the NBA's health and safety protocols) as the lone exceptions.

In part, it's inevitable that as injuries become more common in the postseason, they'll cancel each other to some extent. For example, the Warriors escaped the 2018 Western Conference finals without the injured Iguodala in part because of Paul's subsequent hamstring injury, which sidelined him for the final two games.

What's unusual this season is the number of twists and turns due to injury.

Topsy-turvy playoff odds
In recent years, there has often been a key series defined by injuries. The 2018 West finals certainly qualified. So, too, did the 2019 NBA Finals, when the availability of Durant and Klay Thompson helped turn the Warriors from favorites to underdogs to favorites (again) to losers. And while the Los Angeles Lakers were always favored, last year's Finals changed dramatically when Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic both suffered injuries in Game 1.

This season, we've seen multiple series that qualify prior to the conference finals.

That started in the opening round during the Suns-Lakers series, in which the Lakers opened as favorites to win the West from the seventh seed. The Lakers looked well on their way to winning the series when they took a 2-1 lead with Paul hampered by a shoulder contusion. Then Anthony Davis left Game 4 with a groin strain, returning briefly and ineffectively at the start of Game 6, and Phoenix won three straight to take the series with Paul looking more like his usual self.

The Nets-Bucks series saw Harden go down with a hamstring injury early in Game 1. Brooklyn still took a 2-0 lead, but when Irving suffered an ankle sprain in the first half of Game 4, Milwaukee evened the series and the Nets appeared set to play Game 5 with neither All-Star guard. Even after Harden was cleared to play, the Bucks were favored to win in Brooklyn. Instead, Durant dominated and the series shifted again.

Like Harden, Conley reinjured his hamstring, in his case in the late stages of the Jazz's opening-round win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Conley's absence was felt in Games 3 and 4, as the Clippers dominated to tie up the series 2-2, only to lose Leonard to a knee sprain that sidelined him for Wednesday's Game 5.

There was no shortage of NBA storylines Wednesday, as two teams announced coaching changes, the Dallas Mavericks announced the departure of longtime GM Donnie Nelson and the Hawks made a historic comeback to beat the 76ers. Nonetheless, Leonard's injury dominated the news cycle. Surprisingly, the Clippers still went into Salt Lake City and won to take a 3-2 lead.

If Conley can come back for Friday's Game 6, there may be yet another turn left in that series. And with Embiid and Harden playing through injuries and Irving hoping to return, health figures to remain the talking point of the 2021 playoffs.

That’s the main problem in the NBA. You got so called stars who haven’t
accomplished squat demanding or requesting for players to be traded and for
coaches to be fired. It’s one thing for players to have rights, and to make sure that players are fairly compensated, but it’s another to allow a player to send your organization into complete disarray.

It’s quite comical to see owners wilt at the slightest sign of a star player
being unhappy, because they fear they will lose the player to FA, or they fear the
player will lose interest in wanting to compete for the team. More and more,
owners are conceding. If a coach needs to be fired in order to please a
star player, then a coach will be fired. The GM will be fired, too. And if certain
players need to be given the boot to make the star happy, then those players
will be booted right out the door.

What’s the purpose of being an owner, GM or coach, since players are deciding
the direction of the franchise, which often leads to disaster?

Also, Players no longer want to put in the strength work or take time to take care
of their bodies, nor do they want coaches getting on them about it....

Had Michael Jordan been given his way with the direction of Bulls, there would
have been zero championships....zero. The same thing goes for Lebron when
he was with the Heat. Management didn’t concede to known of their demands,
and those teams maintained a high level of play and structure.

But in today’s NBA? Kids are running the household, refusing to eat their
vegetables.

And the NBA is not a partnership. Players are hired to play a particular position
based on the language of their contracts. There is no partnership.

You think there is a partnership in Miami?

You think there is a partnership in Chicago?

Lebron wanted Spoelstra fired, Riley told him FOH...and Miami is still a PO
team that went to the chip last year. They are competitive every year.

But look at Cleveland now...all the moves that it made to please Lebron, only
for him to bounce and leave that organization in dire straits. And look at what
is slowly happening to the Lakers.

Look at the Houston Rockets, they honored every request that Harden made, only
for him to act a compete fool on the basketball court to get traded.

As stated, don’t allow players to run your franchise.

I'm betting this is either some personal issue, or, more likely, he wants the Boston job. I know he didn't exactly play long, but he's likely got a line on that and it's a prestige position for a franchise better equipped to contend for a title immediately than Dallas

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/31654042/rick-carlisle-says-return-dallas-mavericks-coach-13-seasons

Rick Carlisle resigned as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, ending his 13-year tenure one day after the departure of longtime president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, removing two of the key figures from the franchise's 2010-11 championship team.

"After a number of in-person conversations with Mark Cuban over the last week, today I informed him that I will not be returning as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks," Carlisle told ESPN in a written statement. "This was solely my decision. My family and I have had an amazing 13-year experience working with great people in a great city."

Carlisle, 61, said it had been an "honor to work alongside" several members of the Mavs organization, specifically naming Cuban, Nelson, CEO Cynt Marshall, vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley, assistant general manager Keith Grant and the co-stars of the 2010-11 championship team, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd.

"Dallas will always be home, but I am excited about the next chapter of my coaching career," said Carlisle, who has an 836-689 career record, having been the head coach for the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers before arriving in Dallas in 2008.

Carlisle, who had been the NBA's third-longest-tenured head coach behind only San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and Miami's Erik Spoelstra, had a 555-478 record during his 13 seasons in Dallas, setting a franchise record for wins. Carlisle had a 33-38 postseason record with the Mavs, who have not advanced past the first round since their title run 10 years ago.

Doncic on Nelson's Mavericks exit: 'Tough for me'

"I truly love Rick Carlisle," Cuban told ESPN. "He was not only a good coach but also a friend and a confidant. Our relationship was so much more than basketball. And I know that won't ever change."

According to Cuban, the Mavs will hire a new head of basketball operations before conducting a coaching search. Cuban has hired Mike Forde's Sportsology, a consulting firm frequently used by NBA teams hiring general managers, to assist in the search for Nelson's replacement.

The tension between Carlisle and 22-year-old superstar Luka Doncic had increasingly become concerning within the Mavs organization, sources said. Doncic showed up Carlisle on several occasions this season, such as making animated gestures on the court when he disagreed with a decision or yelling at Carlisle in front of assistant coaches and teammates.

However, Cuban told ESPN moments after the Mavs' season ended with a Game 7 loss to the LA Clippers on June 6 that Carlisle would return as Dallas' head coach.

"Let me tell you how I look at coaching," said Cuban, who has hired only two head coaches in 22 years since buying the Mavs. "You don't make a change to make a change. Unless you have someone that you know is much, much, much better, the grass is rarely greener on the other side."

Doncic has a strong relationship with longtime Mavs assistant coach Jamahl Mosley, a potential candidate to replace Carlisle.

Mosley, who has interviewed for head coach positions with the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and New Orleans Pelicans in recent offseasons, served as the acting head coach for the Mavs' road win over the Knicks on April 2, a game Carlisle missed due to a false positive COVID-19 test.

"He's got the things that are needed for a head coach," Doncic said that night. "He can be the head coach, for sure."

You still have time to edit.

He has never shot 50pct in a season, and this season he is shooting 47pct.
That’s okay, but it is avg compared to KD, Kawhi, etc.

He is not one of the most efficient scorers ever ...not even close.

Adrian Dantley
George Gervin
Michael Jordan
Kevin Durant
Bernard King
Alex English
Kawhi Leonard

Elite, efficient masters of scoring!

In response to Reply # 257

That's good for Top 15 in NBA history. He's behind guys like Curry, Dantley, Durant, Reggie Miller, and even a couple of today's stretch bigs, granted...

... but I think it's pretty hard to deny that Harden's one of the most efficient scorers in NBA history. You can't measure one's scoring prowess solely by raw field goal percentage, because that doesn't weigh (a) how many of your attempts are 3s, (b) how often you generate points at the line, and (c) how efficient you are at converting at the line. Those are all key components of your per-possession efficiency scoring the ball.

So... yeah. I side with 40thStreetBlack on this one. I feel like we won't see eye to eye here... but just wanted to throw that out there for those interested.

260. "TS % is not a reflection of a player’s efficiency from the FIELD"
In response to Reply # 258
Fri Jun-18-21 10:55 AM by allStah

That’s the whole purpose of FG percentage, shots a player made based off the
shot attempts of the player. Harden has below to avg efficiency from the field.

TS% is somewhat overrated, because free throw attempts and makes are
part of the equation. That’s why he has a high TS%, because of his ability
to draw fouls. Charles Barkley had a TS% of 62%, because he played close
to the basket and was fouled a lot because of it. He also shot 26% from 3.....
He would not be considered as one of the most efficient shooters or scorers
of all time.

Jordan had a TS% of 56%. Would you say Harden is more efficient than Jordan
from the field? Hell no.

In relation to his peers, he is below them when it comes to efficiency from the FIELD.

Lebron
Kawhi
Steph
Durant

Their FG pcts are far, far superior.

Like I said, Harden is a very CRAFTY offensive player, and is one
of the greatest offensive players to play the game. However, most of his career
consisted of him being a volume shooter, especially since he was the focal point
of Mike D’s 7 seconds or less offense.

I put him on that AI, Kobe, and Carmelo list: Players who put up points, but had
weak fg pcts...Volume shooters and scorers.

There are just too many great scorers throughout the history of the NBA.

Example: Adrian Dantley is the only player in NBA history to avg
30 points a game while shooting 55.5pct from the field in 4 straight
seasons....let that sink in for a minute. And he was a 6’4 perimeter player.
There were no spread offenses, and he did it in an era where players were
allowed to play chest bumping defense and hand check on defense.
He was a walking bucket inside and out.

Keep in mind, Durant is playing in a weak era defensively. Players aren’t allowed
to get physical or hand check. That matters.

Whichever team it is.

I said that going into the series, and while I maybe feel a little less good about it now due to Brooklyn injuries/Giannis weirdness during this series... I have no reason to not stand by it.

(I may sprinkle some futures money on Atlanta and Phoenix tho, lol.)

All Ben gives you is great defense.

Philly you got your future PG ...move Ben and Harris

Build around Embid, Maxey and Curry.

They did the damn thing, and Maxey should be the starting PG.

He is skilled.

Ben is just a big guard who plays defense. He is even worse than Giannis.
Giannis will shoot and and hit on a few of his shots....Ben will not even attempt a shot,
and can’t hit a free throw.

Ben doesn’t even have the mechanics to shoot the ball. So you can’t even say
he has bad shooting mechanics, where he just needs to improve on them. He simply
does not know HOW to shoot. There is a difference between can’t shoot and being
a bad shooter.

Grade school basketball players can shoot better than him, and they aren’t strong
enough to have proper shooting mechanics. They push shots. Simmons can’t even
do that!!!

How is he a NBA player??

They play more as a unit, where everyone is involved. And they communicate

scorer and players taking a backseat.

And I told you mofos about MANN. That boy is from FSU! Williams can ball
like that too. If he is from FSU, draft him! That program is no joke.

And Batum does all the dirty work.

When teams spread the floor and move the ball AND the good looks start dropping, every lead can get shot or tooken out. It’s crazy to see how so many players in league have figured it out..aka learn to shoot and you’ll always have a job.

Meanwhile, as we all notice, Ben Simmons is shook af to shoot and horrible by basically any reasonable nba standard from any era in the last 30-40 years. It’s a joke and a bad fucking look. And the 35%-ish free throw shit is just a rotten cherry on top.

The final 6 minutes of the PHL/ATL game turned into a FT shooting contest
+ no FTs for the PHL starters though 3 quarters
+ Embiid having his shorts pulled, kicked and shoved on the ground, shoved from behind...gets T’d up and an offensive foul
+ taking points off the board from the made basket
+ after Collins whacked him in the face, for which Embiid got called for a foul
+ Trae’s foul baiting
+ taking Maxey’s 3 off the board on an off the ball foul
Those last 6 minutes though
Game was competitive and flowing the whole night
Then the refs decided to take over and start a parade to the FT line
SMH
League has a serious problem IMO
Nobody wants to see that B$, especially in an elimination game
Do better.

call I’ve seen in a minute. The ball was clearly released prior to the whistle/loose ball call. And Collins damn near put Embiid in a chokehold on the alley oop that somehow resulted in a foul called on Embiid. There was some classic home court cooking going on.

Utah’s main issue was losing Conley to a hamstring injury.
He is the Chris Paul of that team. That puts Ingles at the PG
position, who is a lot slower

Conley played yesterday, but clearly he was just a decoy. He has the
also injury Harden has.

Plus Mitchell’s ankle was focked up, but he still balled out.

… is a small ball center that can switch and defend the perimeter. It’s pretty clear that a few of the most elite teams in the NBA are tailor made to destroy drop coverage (shit, Utah was destroying LA’s drop coverage earlier in the series). Switching to small ball is the only way to beat these spread offenses, because you can’t slow an elite spread offense down with only four guys on the perimeter fighting through screens (and only one of them, O’Neal, an especially effective defender in iso).

If Utah got a guy that could take some of Gobert’s minutes against these spread perimeter attacks, that’d help remedy their Achilles heel. Because as effective as Gobert is against 95% of the NBA, they are nearly guaranteed to run into that 5% in the playoffs. Because teams know know that the recipe to beating Utah is going completely small on offense.

Tucker has the lower center of gravity, so better lateral movement.

They aren’t guarding each other. ...gotta save energy for offense.

I wouldn’t allow either as a coach.

Atlanta just doesn’t have the length to deal with Milwaukee’s, and while Philly’s drop coverage may prove effective enough against Giannis, I have no clue how they score on a Milwaukee team that will absolutely dare them to shoot 3s all game.

KD was back in OKC with a much worse Westbrook down the stretch here. Harden was cooked (fuck that dude), nobody else could’ve been asked to take a shot and it was all ISO KD down the stretch. He looked Excitebike tired. And he clearly was.

Had his foot not been on the line, that would have been ball game.
He was going for that same shot, with a focus on burying the game.

What the hell was Nash’s game plan? Run plays for other shooters.
You got Landry Shamet on the bench and you don’t even use him....

It was like give the ball to Durant, and everyone else get out of the way.

That’s where the fantasizing about prior great games in nba history screws players and coaches. Teams sometimes seem like they would damn near rather lose with their main guy visibly dying of fatigue than to keep playing basketball and allow some other guys to get and make the good shots that they exist to make.

Some people think it's easier to score on a defense that isn't set, even if the offense that may get the shot may be disorganized.

But I think calling a TO may have been a good idea (at least I think they had a timeout) if only to give KD a bit of a breather before his shot.

I don't have a problem with KD getting the last shot. The only other player who seemed to be a likely option (since Harden was basically immobile) was Blake. And he fouled out.

Kyrie & Love.

Injuries are part of the game.

For a team that had all its stars together on the court for 7 games during the regular season is it a shock that they can’t make it through the playoffs healthy?

trust their bench.

I definitely feel like Nash could've managed his teams' minutes better. KD was obviously gassed at the end as was Giannis.

But Brooklyn seemed like such a deep team during the season but at the end it was determined for whatever reason that certain guys were not going to play.

You telling me Joe Harris is that much better than Landry Shamet? DeAndre Jordan couldn't get a minute? So you just abandon the concept of rim protection like Antoni did in Houston and allow Giannis to get the the basket at will almost? I thought Claxton played well when got he time. A few other young guys on that bench had moments not saying give them 10 minutes but they can't give you 5?

I know teams shorten their rotations during the playoffs but this seemed extreme especially with BK's stars coming off a season when they missed so much time to injury.
