talk about a brain fart.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Unless his plan was assuming the first baseman was dumb af, it seems like he also thought that if he delayed getting tagged long enough for the run to score that the run would count even if he never made it to first.

I agree with Cenario below, that he was just screwing around at first. But once the first baseman started pursuing him, I'm guessing that he put together pretty quickly that there was no downside to continuing that, and it was the only chance to bring the run home.

You could be right, but Baez is one of the few guys I'd give the benefit of the doubt on this one.

You can fuck people up by just changing little things in their routine.

I don't know if Baez did it on purpose but he exploited the first baseman being focused on getting him out by tag out rather than whatever was the easier play (tagging the bag).

If Baez just ran to the bag like the first baseman expected, the Pirate player would've made the correct play.

What could he have been thinking?

Am I right to believe he could have ended everything by doing one of the following 2 things:
1). Just jogged back a touched 1st base
2). Touch the runner

Is there a timing aspect here? Like the guy going to home was a primary threat?

Or actually tagging Baez at any point before he got to first. So even after he ran him back toward home, he could have just tagged him rather than flipping it to the catcher and it would have just looked kind of silly. The timing doesn't matter if they get Baez out at first because he's forced there. Even if the runner crosses home, the run won't count.

On the question of what the firstbaseman was thinking - no idea. My guess is that the throw from third taking him *slightly* off of first base made him start thinking about the other runner. He didn't need to because there were two outs, and it's not the third baseman's fault because the throw was more than good enough. But it really felt like the moment he had to do something different than foot-on-bag-and-receive-throw then his brain started just... giving him extra stuff to worry about.
