I understand your point about it not being a 1-to-1 comparison, but nothing is, and no one is arguing that the Jags should’ve signed Kaep as a TE. The point of the criticism is that the nepotism here is gross, and when it’s looked at with the lens of Kaep never getting a shot with ANY team, it looks even grosser.
I get why the signing will be popular with Floridians and all that, but that doesn’t automatically make it a good football decision, and I don’t buy that Urban Meyer owes him anything. Plus, if they’re trying to win there are probably a bunch of serviceable Tight Ends that have actually played the position at the professional level who are still available. You don’t even have to bring up Kaep for this to look questionable at best. Not to mention he hasn’t played in a regular season game at any position in almost a decade.
Tebow and Bortles left the league because they weren’t productive enough to be useful for any team. Somehow that changes years later, and in the case of Tebow, at a different position? Kaep was certainly not great his last couple seasons, but he was better than a bunch of QBs who got roster spots ahead of him, and he certainly did enough during his career to at least get some tryouts. Again, not everything is a 1-to-1 comparison, but you’d think with everyone saying “Sorry, I wasn’t cool about the kneeling thing, I know better now.” Kaep could finally get a look from a couple teams.
