This is no time for experimenting. Start the same lineup as last
week. Why start Havertz over Pulisic??

I swear everytime he has a good game against a weak side
Tuchel throws him in the starting lineup for the next match.

If we lose, this is on Tuchel.

Werner - Havertz - Mount

Chilly- Jorginho- Kante - AZP

Rudiger - Silva - Chris

As far as RM, Hazard getting the start on the right. That’s strange.
I guess due to Vinny not being able to play anywhere else, but needing
Vinny’s speed, he put Hazard on the right. Vinny was trash last game anyway.
He is similar to Werner, terrible end product.

Chelsea let’s get two goals, give up no more than 1,
then close the show.

Beware of Ramos’ tricks....

Hell of find by Cech.
We should be down 2-0. Mendy made some killer saves off Benz.

Kante bossing it out there, and the backline has been solid.
And Mount has been decent.

Kante sent a beautiful pass into the box to Havertz, only for Havertz
to send a crap shot to the bar. Luckily it bounced back to Werner for
a easy tap in.

Other than that, Havertz and Werner have been shite. Werner offsides
that messed up an easy goal, and just making bad pass after bad pass.
Havertz constantly dribbling to nowhere.

Bring on Pulisic and Hudson now. Havertz and Werner are too wasteful.
Drives me mad.

They won La liga last season. Got all the way to the Semis this year of the CL
and still have a chance to repeat as la liga champs.

They are mainly old. Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, and the young players
aren’t ready yet.

The main problem is that they need a CAM . They don’t have one. That should
be the main focus. And a new striker is definitely needed.

And hope that Hazard’s body isn’t shot. He looked lively in the second half.

It’s not like MU after Fergie who are just recently showing signs of turning it
around. RM just need a few tweaks, not an overhaul.

Rodrygo, Asensio, Vinny, Mendy, Varane, Kroos, Hazard, Courtois, Benz
Casemiro, Militao...bring a few new pieces to add to that.

and they're throwing it away. both barca and real have made some bad decisions in the market and are struggling to convert to their next generations.

both teams' players who should be in their prime--the 24 to 29 year olds--are underwhelming. umtiti got hurt, lenglet is not up to it mentally, lol coutinho lol, s. roberto a squad player and same for firpo. MatS has been good not great this season and made some dumb mistakes.

for madrid, courtois been good (he's only 28?!?!), mendy's good, and then...odriozola, asensio, carvajal, isco, and vazquez don't scare anyone (and asensio and isco were supposed to). Casemiro's good and Varane is too, but they're not dominant. just a surprisingly underwhelming core for both regarding players in their prime years.

I think I'd prefer Barca's youth to madrid's, but i accept that i am definitely biased. but i'd take fati/pedri/de jong as a core three over vini/rodrygo/fede (or whichever real youth you want to pick).

on all cylinders.

the structure is so stable that it's allowing Kante to pretty much roam wherever he wants. i mean, roaming everywhere is his thing, but it seems like he's able to take more risks now with the stability behind and around him (Jorginho has had a rebirth under Tuchel as well).

*firing in terms of every player playing at a high level, not in terms of actually scoring goals. finishing is a big issue.

Considering his experience was "Oh, Makelele/Essien/Mikel and the Center backs will do it." And he didn't learn any better at Derby, and thought that he had the same player. He also wanted his team to attack and play open. Which doesn't fully jibe with playing a Mou-style 4-3-3. You're going to kill your holding midfielder if you can't keep the lines together.

You know you like Chelsea, bro. You might as well come on over.

Stop fighting it.

Also, Lampard did the same thing to his players that AVB did to him
when he took over Chelsea. He benched and got rid of a lot of veterans.
He benched Emerson, Alonso and AZP, and other veterans left. Tuchel
re-discovered those players, and he created a relationship with them,
and made them feel wanted.

Every player buys into what Tuchel wants, and have an understanding
that they aren’t always going to play. Pep has a similar connection with
his players. Frank was tremendously stubborn and one dimensional,
and considering that he was a former player, you would think that he would
know how to relate to players.

Mourinho never truly played the game. AVB never played the game, so their
stubbornness and inability to connect with players isn’t shocking. But for Frank,
it was/is quite disturbing.

and when an attacking player did get on the ball there was no cohesive, effective plan. it was either cross and pray or give the ball to post-restart pulisic and hope for the best. the midfield was running around a whole bunch but doing little else.

teams caught on to that this season and frank was toast. literally every player aside from Silva (who is infallible) looked like shit this season under him. and that is primarily due to his tactics (or lack of).

15m fine going to grassroots orgs, 5% docking of european revenue for 1 season.

if they ever try to leave again it'll be a 100m fine.

Glazers at least got word out ASAP that they will be paying it and not leeching the club for it. Seems like they have been successfully gotten to but I don't expect the protest to stop. I thought we'd only make 1 big purchase this summer but I feel like we'll do 2 now. Glazers know they need to make up for time and I can see them naively thinking that getting us winning again will calm fans down.

I know folks have been touting that we always protested even during the SAF years but those were largely hollow actions. That green and gold scarf thing was wack.

The glazers have always sucked. We just still won in spite of them.

between playing De Jong super low and not bringing in Dembele until the 70th, it almost felt like he was playing for the 0-0 and hoping for some Messi magic (which tbf is never that crazy a plan)
Last 20mins were great, and Atletico played a tight collective game throughout, just missing more clearheadedness in the box. What a game from Carrasco

de jong was super low when busi got hurt, before that, he was a bit more attacking.

ilaix was anonymous all game, araujo should have started, and dembele should have come on 15 minutes earlier, especially as pedri looked gassed for 10 minutes before dembele came on.

and come up big.

I didn’t understand the reason for starting Gilmour in a very important
match to secure top 4. It wasn’t a time to experiment, and there
were more bench options. Glmour was clumsy in the box which gave
MC a penalty kick. Luckily, Mendy stood his ground and was able to
easily stop Sergio’s soft shot. That could have been disastrous.

Werner was again wasteful with his final ball. On one play he was offside,
and he muffed a second chance way wide. This would have been a great
opportunity to start Tammy or Giroud. One should have started.

Zouma and Odoi came on and immediately made their presence felt. Zouma
placed a beautiful long ball between two defenders to Odio, who finished with
confidence. However, VAR ruled his knee slightly offsides.

Solid goals by Ziyech and Alonso ( the Spaniard who plays like a brasilian).

All in all, the tactics were spot on, and Chelsea was steady. That’s two victories in
a row against Pep. We play City two more times, in the FA final and the CL final.
I ask for no more experimenting with the line-ups, keep the same tactics in place,
and let’s emulate what we did in 2011-2012 season and bring both trophies home.

Keep The Blue Flag Flying High.

what is/isnt a natural arm position on jumps and slides

We’ve had it given and not given for us enough times for me to be fine with whatever outcome they shit out

My issue there is if you are going to do the review, stop the game. Let’s say we score, or one of us gets a red while the check is going. You have to undo all of that if the pen is given and really I think that’s why they just moved on. Think we had an incident like that earlier this year. More poor var implementation imo

That's how we know the tribute act is working: Ole's getting the SAF calls now. Because you know damn well if that was Martinez tackling Rashford that Bruno gets to score a second penalty.

Barca-Atleti was very tense beginning to end. And Messi almost had a Messi goal.

Real-Sevilla was a pretty wild ride (I've never before seen a VAR check where a single decision would result in a penalty for one team OR a penalty for the other), and the result ultimately helped Atleti.

Note that these are like two of the only La Liga games I've watched this season so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One of the most underrated players in Chelsea’s history. He came to
Chelsea in the same season as Hazard, and made a huge impact
under Rafa Benitez

But the following year, Mourinho came in and sent him on loan.

Conte takes over as the coach, and puts Moses in the starting 11 as a wingback,
and the rest is history. He had his best years at Chelsea under Conte.

When Sarri took over, Victor was placed on loan again. And it stayed that
way under Lampard.

Well, now, he will make a permanent move to Spartak Moscow. He has been impressive
for them this season, so they are going to make him a permanent player. I’m sure
Tuchel would have given him an opportunity once his loan deal was up, but now we
will never know.

Speaks volumes about the terrible coaching of Mourinho, Sarri and Lampard...
and highlights the quality of Conte and Benitez.

Some excellent Arsenal defending in the last 20, especially.

Plus, can you think of anything more darkly hilarious than if Chelsea both lost the CL final AND dropped out of the top 4?

Arsenal have actually beaten chelsea 3 in row now, including last year's FA cup.

I really don't get it.

Regardless, hopefully this goes towards Leicester securing 3rd, and *maybe* WEST HAM (wtf) getting 4th

Stop playing Havertz, please. Gilmour is young and his game is immature.
He isn’t ready yet. There are other options.

Tammy couldn’t get a game today? You gotta play Havertz wack ass as a striker?

A very frustrating loss to a wack ass club!....can’t lose to freaking

But also fuck all billionaires. Fuck soccer orgs like fifa, uefa, the fa.

Manchester and the other northern cities have a long history of working class politics. And there's definitely class politics going on here.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2021/may/14/china-investment-inter-scrutinise-owners

As the Italian parliament debates whether Italy should formally recognise that China is guilty of genocide on its Uyghur citizens, the Chinese state is a part-owner of the Scudetto champions

Barney Ronay
Fri 14 May 2021 12.12 EDT

You might think Liverpool have had an underwhelming Premier League title defence. The mid-season collapse. The failed attempt to join a Super League. The strangely maudlin video address from the club’s owner, delivered in the style of a baffled senior executive apologising for an involuntary bladder malfunction at the company golf day. None of this is ideal.

But spare a thought for the reigning Chinese Super League champions, Jiangsu FC, who are nowhere to be seen four games into the new season.

Jiangsu do at least have an excuse. The Chinese champions no longer exist, having been dissolved by their owners in February and deemed too much of a liability to keep going, despite the 60,000-capacity stadium and the 63-year history.

“Jiangsu football club ceases the operation of its teams,” a statement from the appropriate arm of the club owner, Suning Holdings, announced, going on to thank the fans for their “solidarity”, the people who you know make it all worthwhile. Made. Used to make. Whatever.

And so the CSL has simply rolled on into the new season. Marouane Fellaini’s Shandong Taishan are top of Group One. Marco Arnautovic scored a hat-trick on the opening day and will presumably soon be using this as leverage for a lucrative switch to North Korea or Mars or Atlantis.

Oscar continues to see out the projected eight-year stint at Shanghai SIPG that will net him about £100m: a footballer manacled to his own hare-brained contract, but hanging in there all the same despite the recent salary cap that means his local teammates can earn at most a 10th of his wages.

Although, it should be said not everyone has simply moved on from the liquidation of the champions. There were awkward scenes on social media last week as Internazionale’s chairman, Stephen Zhang, celebrated the club winning Lo Scudetto, and was met with angry responses from Jiangsu fans who believe their club was in effect sacrificed at the altar of Inter’s absurd debts.

It is here that this story becomes more hair-raising. Suning also owns 68% of Inter, a club so up against it Italian media reported a recent missed payment to Manchester United on the Romelu Lukaku account. But Suning isn’t the only player here, or in any sense the most powerful.

Nobody seems to have noticed or taken any real interest, but as of the start of March operations tied to the Chinese government bought a 23% stake in Suning.

It is important to note why this happened. Suning is in financial trouble. The new part-owners are a state industrial arm. China is not interested in owning Inter for sportswashing or soft-power reasons. But the fact remains, the Chinese state is a part-owner of Inter. An arm of the Chinese government is, at one remove, the most imposing voice on the board of the Serie A champions.

There has been no real mention of this mind-boggling fact. Football has enough on its plate. Although given the furore over the prospect of the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund buying Newcastle, or Manchester City’s status as a PR tool of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, you’d think it might merit a mention.

That may yet come to pass. In a further twist, the Italian parliament is debating a motion on whether Italy should formally recognise that China is guilty of genocide on its Uyghur citizens, as opposed to merely violating their human rights.

And yes, this is football, a place where nobody is really clean, where ties can be found linking every investor to a dubious deal, every government to an armaments trail. But this is something more.

Pending that resolution, Italian football faces a scenario in which its champion team, the grand old regal Internazionale of Giuseppe Meazza, Sandro Mazzola, Ronaldo, Roy Hodgson, is part-owned by what its government considers to be a genocidal regime. The same government that disappears people and silences dissent, is underwriting Ashley Young’s wages. Which does slightly put the Glazer family crimes against effective fan engagement into some perspective.

Inter are in enough of a mess already. Javier Zanetti confirmed this week the club finances have been broken by loss of sponsor and match-day income. Reports suggest the players have been asked to consider a wage deferral. Lukaku could be returning to the Premier League, with Chelsea and City perhaps using him as an early stalking horse in the great game of pandemic-era super striker sales.

In the meantime China’s de facto, arm’s-length stake in Inter sits there, its implications largely unexamined. If Italy decides this is a genocidal state, how does its Football Association sustain this situation?

Are we expected to listen to Uefa’s vapid preaching on racism and prejudice, while allowing a club owned by a state that runs “re-education camps” to play in its premier competition? How would Mesut Özil, or other players who feel strongly on these specific matters, feel about taking the field with this entity?

These are theoretical questions, to which we know most of the answers. No doubt the Inter oddity will pass some time soon with the sale of the club’s dominant holding. Those who know say the CCP has long since grown tired of China’s sporting ambitions being used as a feeding ground for the hungry sharks of European football. That capital flight is being called home.

In the meantime, if these contortions tell us anything it is that there has never been more urgent need to limit and scrutinise exactly who gets to own our community sporting assets. One thing Inter’s ultimate minority owners would agree on: time for a little empowered regulation of that wild and promiscuous global free market.

This is a championship game. I’m not confident with Kepa in as GK.
Why did he get the start?

We lost points against Arsenal the other day, because he put
some bullshit lineup out there.

He is getting a little too cute for me.

Why is Ziyech starting over Pulisic and Odoi?

Play your top players in important matches.

https://www.uefa.com/womenschampionsleague/news/0269-1241d2e3ceb7-df6d45a21231-1000--where-to-watch-the-final/

It sounds like anyone will be able to watch it on the UEFA TV player they are trying to push, regardless of national tv rights.

Chelsea v. Barcelona

Chelsea just won the WSL title again. First time a club's men's and women's team have made the final in Europe together. I guess not all Chelsea fans care about that though...maybe if they're the only ones that win.

This Barcelona team just killed their league too, which hasn't really been done for a while. Atletico used to get in their way domestically even though Barca has always been better in Europe, but what Barca did this year outdid everyone.

My favourite thing to note is Chelsea is one of the English clubs that didn't move on any Americans, but signed a Canadian favourite of mine Jessie Fleming out of College. Looking at Davies to Bayern into a CL title again finally, Jonathan David to Lille into Ligue 1 title (almost??), Canadians might be lucky charms!

Seriously, try and watch it.

but wasn't completely expecting it since I've been able to watch a lot more Chelsea and less Barcelona this year. It was cool to see them do what Lyon did to them two years ago when they really weren't ready for their first final either. 4-0 is actually the biggest margin for a final, Lyon always conceded at least one goal. Hopefully someone can match them next year, the best bet is OL bouncing back. I know UEFA has new plans for the format and stuff next year, hopefully it's easier to follow and watch.

Also, didn't realize this makes Barca the first team to win the Men's and Women's Champions Leagues. Says something about the clubs that have invested in a women's team in the past, OL, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, some Swedish sides, Arsenal won it once.

That’s too unnecessary losses in a row, all because of a shit
lineup.

And who was in as GK for both?
Kepa!

Some GKs bring good vibes and give confidence to players,
Some bring bad vibes and don’t give confidence to players.

Mendy should have started. Period. There is always a feeling of being
invincible.

You try to be too cute. You experiment with lineups.

This is a sackable offense. You blew a huge opportunity to win
a trophy by putting bullshit out on the pitch.

Chelsea is practically unbeatable when they are ahead in
the score. But are terrible when behind, because the finishing is
poor at times. So don’t get behind!!

If we don’t finish top 4 and win CL, sack his ass ...and I’m
not even playing.

One thing I love about Ancelotti and Benetiz ...they always play
their best players....no focking around until things have been
accomplished.

Bringing Pulisic on in the 70th minute?

He should’ve started the match.

Keep on trying to force feed Kepa, Werner, Havertz and Ziyech. You’re going to fock around and get sacked

All this shit is on Tuchel. We know who can do what.

Put the best finishers on the pitch, period. All this Tuchel school shit
.FOH. Do the simple shit first.

This is not German hate....Mercedes and BMW try to get too cute, always focusing
on luxury and sacrificing reliability and durability.

Japanese cars always focus on durability and reliability first... that’s why they
always start and last forever. They simply get the job done.

We needed Japanese cars out on the pitch today.

Mercedes has 3 out of 5 reliability rating, meaning their
avg at best. And that sucks compared to Japanese cars

Due to different philosophies in automobile engineering.
Germans focus on performance and luxury. They’ll have the
latest technology and upscale interior and fabrication.... but
parts don’t last, and are expensive to replace and cumbersome to fix.
They are too busy focusing on trying to out-engineer everyone ( being too cute).

I owned one Mercedes in my life time, and I will never own another one

It’s like Germany during the war...had all the latest war technology and
blitz tactics, but lacked durability and reliability and broke down in the end.
.

Japanese think about affordability and reliability first. Their cars
may not drive as smooth as a German car, but they last longer and are
inexpensive to repair if they need to be repaired.

aguero can dribble and finish. aguero can also trap the ball properly.

timo can only run and hustle himself into a rare goal or assist every now and then. he's the opposite of a complete player and (at the moment) should be used as an impact sub.

We are in serious trouble. We have 2 EPL games left, and Liverpool
has three EPL games left. We cannot afford another loss.

We have to play LC again, and our last EPL game is against Aston focking Villa.

You couldn’t make this up in a classroom studying Greek mythology!

We have to play as if we lost the CL final. That has to be the mentality, because the
priority is to secure top 4. We secure top 4 FIRST, then we go into the CL final
pressure-free. That has to be the strategy!

because Liverpool is definitely winning out, that I'm sure of.

As disgusting as this is for me to admit...I'd be sort of entertained if y'all missed out on top 4 but beat city in CL.

That would relegate Liverpool to Europa, no?

I can't believe I just wrote that.

On 2nd thought, I'd rather chelsea miss out on CL and lose to city in CL final.

However, if an EPL team that has failed to secure a top 4 spot wins Europa
or the CL, then a 5th CL spot is granted.

Scenario:

if Chelsea secures a top 4 spot and wins the CL, the EPL
doesn’t get an extra spot. Liverpool would go to Europa.

However, if Chelsea doesn’t secure a top 4 spot, but win the CL, then the top
4 EPL teams would go to the CL, and a 5th CL spot would be given to Chelsea.

It’s about earning the qualification.

For our goal I was disappointed from a goalkeepers' union standpoint. You never want to see that happen. It's not nice, it's embarrassing, so I felt for Adam but you have to move on from it."

Have to think he ends up at City personally. We’re going to actually try for Sancho this time instead of that clown show last year

And they may as well fold up Tottenham if you sell your GOAT player to one of your bitterest local rivals

He is not the Spurs’ GOAT, not even close. A lot of Spurs lists don’t
even have him top ten.

As far as Kane going to Chelsea, I don’t want him. He is too injury prone, almost
just as bad as Pulisic. I’ve grown to accept Pulisic, but that is it.

I don't even know. Probably Arsenal actually, which would be hilarious.

I still can't believe Spurs hired Mourinho. Set the club back a few years at least, and the failure this year directly led to Kane wanting out.

a focal point to play off of as to opposed to a bunch of pieces running around hoping to randomly connect is not sustainable.

this team kinda only scores ugly goals. gimme a #9 and let the forward line truly connect. the only time the teams looks to play an intricate 1-2 is in midfield build up play. we need some of that at the top of the pitch as well.

lukaku with tammy backing him up would be nice.

There are constant collaborations and setups between all attacking
players. We are actually brilliant in that area. Getting the ball up
through all 3 phases of the pitch, from the back to the mid the
box, is a thing of beauty at times.

The major crime is the final ball, which usually ends with Werner
or Havertz being wasteful.

We actually have a striker who has the ability to score goals, but for
whatever reason, Tuchel fails to acknowledge this.

It’s like I said before the season started, when Chelsea spends
loads of money for so called superstar strikers, it never turns
out to be successful.

We are stuck with Werner, so we have to find a way to fix
him.

1 is more than enough.

Portugal player Andre Silva is having an amazing year, and at the
age of 25, he is entering his prime, and is an excellent finisher.

All eyes are on Mbappe, Haaland, Lukaku, and Aguero, but hopefully
people continue to sleep on him. I think he is RM’s target if they don’t get Mbappe
or Haaland. But other than that, he isn’t a huge transfer target in general. ..so Chelsea could easily scoop him up.

Yeah, sure we've got Grealish. Ollie Watkins never stops running. Tyrone Mings is a great ambassador for the club on so many social issues https://twitter.com/OfficialTM_3/status/1393283758078500866. We have two of the best young fullbacks in the game (of course Cash will miss Sunday's match).

And then there's Meatball: https://www.archysport.com/2020/12/this-aston-villa-player-walks-around-the-club-disguised-as-a-turkey-video/

the soccer you love. He just wants to make another Billi, and take away
the structure of soccer as we know it today, all so that he can generate as much
revenue as possible without facing threatening competition.

This is who and what you’re rooting for.

Roman is a soccer lover to the bone, and even though his non-soccer business
endeavors are highly questionable, he doesn’t invest in soccer for the money.

And then to go root for Villa, whose owner, Nassef Sawiris, was a serial tax
evader in Egypt.

Be prepared to cry hard and often.

You know, the money the government uses to:

- pay civil workers
- fund academic institutions
- provide low income housing programs
- implement welfare services for underprivileged citizens
- offer free medical care
- fund government agencies that help to run the country

Yeah, taxes

Like, if we're playing the "my dad can beat up your dad game," then it's degrees of who is the least bad. As far as competition goes, all three - Henry, Sawiris/Edens and Roman - have been backing their managers with transfer cash and haven't been taking out loans against the clubs like the Glazers.

The Liverpool owner you're looking for on that score is the Hicks/Gillette team.

weird day, seemed like Atleti was going to cruise to the title, then of course RM get two late goals and Atleti had to hold on or lose the title.

This is where the season kisses you on the forehead and
tucks you in for the night

And when you wake from your slumber next season , you will find yourself
in the arms of Europa!

You will walk alone!

Spurs huge rivalry against Arsenal was way more important
than Spurs sticking it to Chelsea

And we focked Spurs a few years ago to give LC the title.

But I still want Tuchel fired for not playing Tammy....sticking
with Werner means he is absolutely not the man for the job.

man fuck that. They spend like 40% more than LFC does, and LFC is in the group that outspends the other 75% of the league.

City's BENCH would threaten for a top 4 finish. Other teams scramble during injuries, Pep has his choice of world class players to put in.

Yes Pep & Co obviously deserve credit, and yes I'm bitter, but give me a fucking break.

But the right lineup has be implemented....as well as formation.

3-4-3 is the way to go in my opinion

/Pickford/

Stone/ Maguire/Shaw

Trent/Rice/Mount/Chilly

Sancho/ Kane/ Sterling

Great stability in the back and middle,
with some serious speed and offensive power to go forward. Mount
can play anywhere from midfield to forward, so you have that versatility.

Trent and Chilly’s ability to go forward would be wasted in a basic 4-5-1 or 4-3-3.

Henderson isn't the character Pickford is but he also isn't likely to go on a wander
Trippier gives you a set piece option
Stones and Mings or Stones and Coady give you a good defensive base and organization (and I trust either of those two more than Maguire)
Rice and Phillips can destroy and playmake from deep.
Foden, Mount and Grealish in combination give you the most versatility behind Kane, and can allow him to drop deep and do whatever he wants.

He scraped that a long time ago.

He ran a 3-4-3 last fall and 4-3-3 back in March.....

You gotta go with players who work best for those formations.

Phillips protecting in front of the back four.

Also, I said that's what *I'd* go with. It's also highly unlikely he's not going to start Slabs.

However, it means no way Lukaku is staying.....bring him back home!

I assume most US fans associate a British voice with authenticity, and if it's for EPL games I can't complain, but they really show their limits for European stuff, clearly having watched very little, if any, of the non-English team during their seasons. They've been treating Villareal almost like a JV team from a Disney movie, it's ridiculous.

for sure, but very few Americans can tell. Heck a lot of Americans can't tell an Aussie/NZ accent from a British one

Mostly the CL/EL crew, between Jim "Latino temperament" Beglin and Rob Green (explain to me how this dude is supposed to have insight on top international futbol??) they really have no clue when it comes to anything outside of the EPL. I guess they'll do fine considering who's in the final this year, but overall I haven't been impressed by what Paramount+ has offered on the commenting side

Also rather see Utd lose, obviously, but that ain't gonna happen in the next 5 minutes. So now I feel like I'm stuck watching Utd score the winner in the 117th minute, which is the worst of all possible outcomes.

I got worried when Silva was subbed off due to injury. But Rudiger and Christensen
were huge, and Kante again covered the earth. There are a lot of similarities between
this champions league team and the 2012 champions league team. Both teams were
a combination of young and old, and both teams never gave up.

Now, let’s focus on getting two solid strikers, a backup GK, and fullback depth.

I’m happy for Azp, Jorginho, Kante, Alonso, and Emerson, they have been
through so much....Azp being the oldest of them all

KTBFFH!!

Not starting a regular holding mid actually might have been the right call. The problem was then playing De Bruyne and Gundogan out of position. And I like Raheem, but he may have been the wrong call too.

As the article points out, last night Chelsea won by abusing City with long cross field passes.... just like they did when they beat City in the FA Cup.

So why didn't Pep change any tactics?

Also I guess everyone likes Zinchenko but I've never seen it. Maybe Pep can buy 3 new world class full backs and try again.

Long balls, targeting the left and a back five – how Chelsea won the Champions League final

By Michael Cox

In the end, it played out exactly as Thomas Tuchel would have hoped.

Since taking charge of Chelsea in January, this has been Tuchel’s default game plan in big matches. They still look to control matches through possession, but a significant portion of their goals come on the break. They attack with speed behind the opposition defence, and are then content to see out results through deep, old-school, penalty-box defending.

The only surprise was that Chelsea found it so easy, with opponents Manchester City recording their lowest expected goals (xG) figure of their entire season.

While Tuchel picked his expected starting XI, opposite number Pep Guardiola sprung a major surprise with his.

Raheem Sterling was recalled on the left flank, Phil Foden shifted inside and Ilkay Gundogan given the holding role. It was only the second time all season Guardiola has started a match without at least one of his holding midfielders, Fernandinho and Rodri.

Was this a classic case of him “overthinking”? Perhaps, but it’s worth taking a second to examine Guardiola’s possible reasoning.

Fernandinho, now 36, was given the runaround by Mason Mount’s movement in last month’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea, continually being dragged towards the touchline and outwitted. Rodri, meanwhile, endured a truly dreadful game against the same opponents last season, perhaps his worst in a City shirt, when he was continually caught out of position and unable to stop Chelsea counter-attacks.

Neither man is particularly mobile but Guardiola, of all people, knows that mobility isn’t a prerequisite for the holding midfield role, having played it himself.

Chelsea didn’t necessarily target City in that zone, however. Instead, just as they did successfully in that FA Cup semi-final six weeks ago, they attacked well by switching the play out to their left flank, towards Ben Chilwell.

Both he and Reece James were excellent defensively last night, with Chilwell sticking extremely tight to Riyad Mahrez and James’ pace allowing him to deny Sterling a route to goal. Going forward, though, Chilwell was significantly more influential.

In terms of systems, Guardiola essentially played a back three, a diamond midfield and a front three when in possession, with Oleksandr Zinchenko drifting infield from left-back to form the left-hand point of the diamond.

He has often used this shape over the years in an attempt to stretch the play high up the pitch while dominating the centre of it. It does, however, mean his defenders are forced to cover a large amount of space when the opposition counter-attack.

Chelsea stuck to their usual shape, with Tuchel ordering Mount and Kai Havertz to remain in aggressive, central positions to block City’s passing through the middle, rather than dropping back to form a midfield four. It was effectively 5-2-3.

In fact, Chelsea’s shape sometimes ended up looking more like 5-1-4, as one of the holding midfielders would push forward to press the man in possession…

…and although that risked leaving too much space between the lines, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta were aggressive, always ready to stride forward and shut down the players on the sides of City’s diamond if they received possession.

The real story of the game is Chelsea’s direct passes into attack, particularly towards the left.

It feels like long balls have been an unusually prominent part of top-level European football this season — think, for example, of Real Madrid’s 3-1 quarter-final first-leg win over Liverpool. That’s possibly the consequence of teams still playing high defensive lines but doing so with less pressing, and an increased number of defenders who can play accurate long passes downfield.

Chelsea started the game by rattling John Stones with long balls.

Here, Rudiger looks for Timo Werner with one over the top, with Stones getting himself into a right state when attempting to clear the ball…

…that eventually led to Havertz playing a dangerous cut-back to Werner, who completely miscued his shot when well placed.

A similar situation occurred three minutes later.

Thiago Silva launched the ball out towards James, which dragged Zinchenko forward from left-back and Ruben Dias across from centre-back.

James immediately hit a pass in behind them…

…this again prompted Stones to lose his footing when attempting to deal with the ball, allowing Werner to get in behind. Again, Chelsea played a decent cut-back, this time to N’Golo Kante, who couldn’t bring the ball under control.

But the key to the game was Chilwell. He would often pop up in overlapping situations when Kyle Walker was preoccupied with the movement of one of Chelsea’s attackers, usually Mount.

Here are a couple of examples of Havertz feeding an unmarked Chilwell on the overlap, with Mahrez nowhere to be seen.

This was most effective when Chelsea found him quickly from defence.

Here, with Silva hitting a long diagonal, the move came to nothing because Chilwell was flagged offside. A wing-back being caught offside felt telling, though.

Chelsea’s goal just before half-time was the culmination of a move they tried three times in the first half — and it’s the same one they utilised so often against City last month.

First, there’s a long diagonal from defence.

Here, it’s Silva who plays the pass over the head of Mahrez to Chilwell. This attracts Walker towards Chelsea’s left wing-back, leaving Mount free on the inside…

…Chilwell plays it first time to Mount but sends him down the line, meaning he’s unable to pivot and look for a through ball. In the centre of defence, meanwhile, City look exposed — Zinchenko isn’t in the right position to stop Werner’s run in behind.

Two minutes before the goal, Chelsea do the same thing.

This time, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is the player to knock a ball over Mahrez’s head out to Chilwell, which again attracts Walker. For a second time, he immediately plays it past him to Mount.

On this occasion, Stones is tight to him, so Mount can’t turn. City are in a better defensive position in the centre, too, with both men goalside of Chelsea’s attackers.

That move also came to nothing — but City have had two warnings now.

And here’s the goal.

Again, Mendy floats the ball over Mahrez’s head to Chilwell, and you know the drill by now.

Chilwell plays his pass first time, beyond Walker and on to Mount…

…and this time, Mount is in space. This time also, Zinchenko isn’t goalside of his runner, Havertz. Werner makes a run into the left channel to draw Dias out of the equation, which opens up the passing lane for Mount to play a through ball.

In fact, it’s an absolutely huge passing lane and for a player of Mount’s ability, this isn’t a remotely difficult pass to play. The genius is not in the execution itself but in the slight pause just before he hits it, steadying himself and waiting for Havertz to be in the optimum position.

Goalkeeper Ederson can’t stop Havertz from going past him — he actually handles the ball outside his penalty area — and the German seizes on the deflection first and rolls a shot into an empty net.

Would a proper holding midfielder have prevented this goal? Well, he wouldn’t have been in a position to stop Mount directly but he might have been in one that blocked off his through ball to Havertz.

That’s a bit of a stretch, though, and really, City’s problem was the lack of a plan for coping with those long balls out towards Chilwell. Considering this was also their main issue in that FA Cup semi-final between these sides over a month earlier, this is surely a greater oversight than anything to do with the holding midfield position.

The second half was full of suspense but not really packed with tactical intrigue.

Guardiola inevitably summoned both Gabriel Jesus (on 60 minutes) and Sergio Aguero (77), but City lacked any kind of connection between midfield and attack, aside from one piece of play from Foden, who darted through the middle and slipped in Mahrez in a good position. The departure of Kevin De Bruyne on the hour, nursing facial fractures after a collision that saw Rudiger booked, left City lacking ideas in terms of breaking down Chelsea, who switched slightly to a 5-3-2 formation to see out the game.

There haven’t been many underdog victories in Champions League finals, certainly not in recent years. When they have occurred — Liverpool in 2005, Chelsea themselves in 2012 — they’ve tended to be dramatic, almost illogical triumphs rather than comprehensive, deserved wins. Probably not since Borussia Dortmund defeated Juventus in 1997 have underdogs won the final in such a confident manner.

In fact, Chelsea barely had a single scare throughout the entire knockout phase.

This victory would have seemed impossible at the turn of the year, when they were struggling under Frank Lampard, but Tuchel has turned them into the most tactically disciplined side in Europe.

It wouldn’t have worked. Chelsea is possibly the best defensive
team in the EPL. City had chances in the box, it’s just that Chelsea
made some incredible tackles and interceptions.

Again, the score was 1-0. Chelsea had City’s number all year long, as well
as RM, etc. This wasn’t some fluke win. Chelsea did this to city all season long.

With Mendy, and how he keeps that backline organized, it’s almost impossible
for teams to score, especially when Chelsea scores first. They will lock down
the flanks, and force you to shoot from long ranges. And you throw in Kante
who can cover every blade of grass on the pitch, teams have few attacking options.

watched France/Netherlands
weird game. France U21 on paper is better than a lot of senior teams but they just looked flat and self-indulgent all over the place. Netherlands got them on the counter at the end to win it. hit them like a gut punch.

and Portugal/Italy
this was probably the most fun match I've seen since the pandemic. period. up and down action. lots of goals. really fun until Italy picked up their 6th red card in 4 games (LMAOOOO what's wrong w/ these kids) in extra time. ended 5-3 Portugal but both teams played hard. Italy showed a lot of grit coming back to tie things up
