And Hazard will be available for the second match.

Have Hazard back to dominate pool on their own pitch like
he did for 7 straight years.

Just need chelsea to rock Porto to sleep tomorrow.
Gotta get the lineup right..let’s go.

What Lukaku is doing at inter is straight R9 level.
He equaled R9’s season goal scoring record (34) last season, and he is tied
for the most la liga goals this season. And he is doing that while playing
in a racist environment.

And he is only 27 years old.

Of course he is over priced, though. Inter put a 120 mil transfer fee on him.
All soccer players are tremendously overvalued. His actually value is about
80-85 million. And I would put Haaland at 120 mil, not close to 200 mil.

I would love to have him back at Chelsea for under 100 mil.

Tuchel put a shit lineup out there, but Mount still overcame that.

Havertz as striker? (Rolls eyes)

That hazard like turn to score the goal was insane.

MOM was Mendy. He made some big saves.

Good games by Chilwell, Mount, Kovacic.
Kante and Pulisic came on as solid subs.

Havertz and Timo Werner weak as usual. And of course,
Werner muffed a goal ( header). Shit went to the moon.

Playing Havertz as a striker made zero sense. There is no time
for experimentation, and to start him over Tammy is senseless.
Tammy will at least give you movement.

2 away goals. We ain’t giving up that at home, too much defense.

because that kinda contact happens all the time, it had no effect on the goal.

so it's like maybe make it a rule like if you go back and look at it Scott gets a yellow (even though it wasn't Son just made the most of it) but since it wasn't really a factor in the goal let the goal stand?

i dunno. seen too many denied goals like that lately.

Both teams are not as prolific as teams of years past, but both teams
find a way to win regardless of their roster setup. Credit goes to
Zizou and Tuchel, as well as Benzema and Mount.

Let’s bury these cockroaches.....

What a disappointment he's been. And no one wants to buy either.
Also, I've finally come around to the fact that Dembele is just not up to snuff. Injuries aside, he just has not improved how I would have hoped given his potential. He's still dangerous, but his decision making just hasn't gotten much better. Unless he's on the counter, there's a good chance that the attack dies with him. I think his time is close to up. It should be at least.

I can't remember us ever going out after out-playing an opponent, historically shrinking under fire is basically our identity

An ex-player scoring a dagger against us is very much our thing tho, we've got that covered today on the PSG misery bingo

GOT-FUCKIN-DAMN that was tense. I feel like we deserved to go through on aggregate, but ultimately it's just a game of inches

Really impressed by Gueye's game, his play has improved massively recently, played a crucial box-to-box role today. Unlucky for Mbappe+Ney, but it'll make them hungrier

Didn’t need to do too much, But sit back for the counter.

Huge mistake by Reece at the end, ball watching, which led
to a fluke Porto goal.

Smells like 2012 all over again.....same scenario too.
Just need Madrid to put down the hammer tomorrow....

On a sour note, the new Chelsea kits are hideous. Like all
focked up. Looks like something out of 80s arena rock. The
Nike nightmare continues.

it has to rival some sort of record.

solid display overall. it's weird to say, but this team *can* win it. the defensive stability isn't going away any time soon. just need the attack to keep progressing.

EDIT: 11 fouls on Pulisic is most in a game in UCL since Messi 2011 vs Real. And the fouls were legit legit. No flopping. Dude took a beating.

of extra time. The final whistle blew some seconds later. It will not be remembered.

The announcers didn’t even react all that much on the Spanish channel...and you
know how they like to scream goal.

Had it happened earlier in the game, it would have been appreciated.

In response to Reply # 56

i'm sure he works on it, but his issue has been his legs.

you can't tell me, as a professional soccer player, that his legs aren't strong or that he doesn't do everything to take care of them along w/ the club making sure he's taking care of it.

some people are just injury prone.

hopefully he's able to get past it through whatever methods. he's been on a great run lately so maybe he's turned a corner with his fitness.

like, he came out of that game a week or two ago for his hamstring but seems fine now so maybe it's also him learning to trust his body.

some of that shit is mental like you feel something you go "oh shit, something is wrong, can't play" when really you're okay to go.

we'll see how it goes i guess.

They brought in a nutritionist, changed his diet and those issues largely disappeared. Lots of players reject making those kinds of changes, Messi was one when he was younger. He had a famous bust up with Pep over a can of soda in the dressing room. So, I say that to say, there are things you can do to minimize the risk of injuries. Maybe CP is doing those things, but maybe he's not.

KDB has always been somewhat injury prone. He is injured
again, and It might be a broken ankle this time.

And Hazard hasn’t played on the team in about a year or so due to injuries.

Since Belgium’s great run in the WC, the two have rarely been on the pitch
together. The Euros are right around the corner, and Belgium could possibly
have to play without their two best players.

80. "Top European Soccer Teams Agree to Join Breakaway League (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html

Top European Soccer Teams Agree to Join Breakaway League

A group led by Juventus, Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid has agreed in principle on a plan that would upend the sport’s structures and economics.

LONDON — A group of the world’s richest and most storied soccer clubs has agreed in principle on a plan to create a breakaway European club competition that would, if it comes to fruition, upend the structures, economics and relationships that have bound global soccer for nearly a century.

After months of secret talks, the breakaway teams — which include Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Manchester United and Liverpool in England, and Juventus and A.C. Milan in Italy — could make an announcement as early as Sunday, according to multiple people familiar with the plans.

The timing of the announcement appears designed to overshadow Monday’s plan by European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, to ratify a newly designed Champions League, a competition which would be decimated by the departure of its biggest teams.

At least 12 teams have either signed up as founding members or expressed interest in joining the breakaway group, including six prominent teams from England’s Premier League, three from Spain and three from Italy, according to the people with knowledge of the plans. The group has been trying to get other top teams, like Germany’s Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, to join them in their venture, but to date those clubs — and others — have declined to turn their backs on the decades-old domestic structures and Continental competitions that have underpinned European soccer for generations.

The teams involved so far are limited to almost a dozen from Spain, Italy and England, with a cohort of six from the Premier League — United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham — representing the biggest grouping from a single country. Atlético Madrid is the other team from Spain that is said to have endorsed the project, while the Milan rivals Internazionale and A.C. Milan would join Juventus as Italy’s representatives.

The New York Times contacted a number of clubs involved in the breakaway plans but all declined to comment or did not respond. A UEFA spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment.

UEFA and the top European Leagues, though, are bracing for the breakaway announcement. Officials spent the weekend in discussions about ways to block the plan, including potentially banning the breakaway teams from domestic leagues and from next season’s Champions League, with the breakaway scheduled to begin in 2022. The repercussions of that type of breakup would be seismic for all involved; without the top teams, UEFA and the leagues would face demands for millions of dollars in refunds from the broadcasters who pay billions for television rights to tournaments, and the clubs would lose revenue streams that could cripple their budgets as European soccer continues to emerge from the financial wreckage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the most notable teams involved in the breakaway group is Juventus, the serial Italian champion. Its chairman, Andrea Agnelli, also leads the European Club Association, an umbrella body for more than 200 top division clubs, the majority of which will be left out of the proposed Super League. He is also a member of UEFA’s executive board. When asked by The Times this year to discuss his role in the talks of a breakaway league, Agnelli brushed off the idea as a “rumor.”

Still, according to documents reviewed by The Times in January, plans for the breakaway league had gathered pace since the summer. Top clubs sought to take advantage of uncertainty in the soccer industry caused by the pandemic to forge a new path that would ensure a degree of financial stability for them but would also almost certainly lead to a significant — and potentially devastating — loss in value and revenue for teams excluded from the project. Each of the would-be permanent members of the proposed super league are being promised 350 million euros, or $425 million, to sign up, the documents said.

Under the proposals reviewed at the time, the super league, which would play its matches in the middle of the week, sought to secure 16 top soccer franchises as permanent members and to add four qualifiers from domestic competitions. The clubs would be split into two groups of 10, with the top four teams in each group qualifying for the knockout stages, culminating in a final that would take place on a weekend.

The event would, according to the documents, generate hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue for the participating teams, which are already the richest clubs in the sport. (An alternative version of the plan proposed 15 permanent members and five qualification spots.) The group had entered into discussions with JPMorgan Chase & Co. to raise financing for the project, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The firm has so far declined to comment.

UEFA found a powerful ally in opposition to the plans in FIFA, soccer’s global governing body. FIFA warned that any player who took part in such an unsanctioned league would be banned from appearing in the World Cup. The statement came after UEFAs president, Aleksander Ceferin, demanded support from his FIFA counterpart, Gianni Infantino, amid mounting speculation that the breakaway would have FIFA’s backing.

European soccer leaders huddled on the telephone and in video conferences over the weekend to forge a counterattack. However, finding a solution to the potential loss of the biggest brands in soccer is not an easy task. The Premier League, for example, would lose much of its sheen — and almost certainly a lot of the commercial appeal that has turned it into the richest league in soccer — should it move to banish its top six teams.

As member-owned clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid would likely require the support of the thousands of their supporters before formally joining, and any German clubs that agree to take part would face similar obstacles. All can expect heavy internal opposition; fan groups from across Europe had already voiced opposition since details of the plans for a super league emerged earlier this year.

The focus is on money and not glory. Americans invest for profit only, so
they want to ensure their teams are not left out of tournament competitions,
or subjected to relegation. They fear the FC Portos and the Ajaxs will
knock them out.

It’s the same reason why wack ass MLS doesn’t have a relegation rule.

Roman invested 1 billion dollars into Chelsea, and didn’t see a profit for almost
20 years! Why? He was in it for his love of soccer. He is already wealthy, same
goes for MC.

Luckily, Barcelona and RM are owned by the people. Same thing goes for German
clubs, and they are going to fight back.

Hopefully, Chelsea doesn’t feel pressured to join. If they do, I might have to jump ship.
I can’t support a movement that will ultimately lead to the death of soccer.

So fock Manchester United and Liverpool ...how could anyone follow those two clubs?

He can’t push shit because the supporters have to sign off. All Perez does
is talk.

The Glazers and Liverpool owners are the true pushers of this,
along with JP Morgan. MU’s debt increased from 120 mil to about
400mil, and this was before the pandemic because their TV revenue
was down due to lack of tourney play compared to when Fergie
was coaching.

And with Liverpool looking like they will not finish top 4 this season,
and with the team on a decline because their players are getting old,
their future doesn’t look all that bright.

Roman is a true soccer lover and wants glory and could give a crap
about money, which is why he will spend whatever takes, and fire
coaches on a drop of a dime. So that Russian mafia craps means
nothing.

Americans are simply investing for profits. Their investors don’t know shit about soccer
The owner of Liverpool hired focking Billy Bean, a baseball guy, to focus on soccer
analytics ..FOH.

And Fiore doesn't have to convince "the supporters" of shit. Real is a "membership" club with such arcane rules for becoming a member that there's only a handful of people that could ever be President. It's nowhere near the egalitarian thing that you're implying.

“As member-owned clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid would likely require the support of the thousands of their supporters before formally joining, and any German clubs that agree to take part would face similar obstacles. “

Thousands would need to sign off on it. It’s not a walk in the park, not
even close. So again Perez talking means nada, when he has zero power
on the ACTUAL MOVE.

Liverpool and MU as clubs have total execution power. They don’t need approval
from their supporters.

The “socios” OWN Real Madrid and they vote in a president ( Perez).
The owners have the power, which are the supporters. Perez is
not an owner or part of a group of owners.

I’m telling you right now I would jump ship to the Foxes. Can’t support

In response to Reply # 80

Purslow worked previously as a managing director at Liverpool and Chelsea as well.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/56800351?fbclid=IwAR1uBCFfG4rnR1IGktOlziBrUFAlY3CJJ4Al21AiLWRxuNwd6KEJaQQB614

"These proposals do away with sporting merit," Purslow told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"It would enable a small number of clubs to be in this competition come what may and, for millions of people in football, that goes against everything the sport means and stands for.

"The idea is that the uncertainty that comes with sport, that makes it so compelling, that we all love, is actually damaging to the business models of these huge clubs.

"So the scheme is designed to take away that uncertainty, to give predictability to their businesses so that, if they're badly managed or have a poor year, they're still in the premier tournament.

"Does that sound like sport or football to you? To me it sounds a grotesque concept."

European Super League: Liverpool fan groups to remove all flags from Kop

By James Pearce

Liverpool supporters’ group Spion Kop 1906 are removing all their banners and flags from the Kop in protest at the club’s “disgraceful” decision to sign up to a new European Super League.

It means the iconic stand, which has been adorned with tributes to legendary players, managers and trophy successes during the pandemic, is set to be bare for Saturday’s home Premier League clash with Newcastle United.
What has been said?

A Spion Kop 1906 spokesman told The Athletic: “We’ve been in contact with the club today to make it clear we want all the banners and the flags all taken down as soon as possible. We’re taking our support is off the table from now.

“We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above the integrity of the game.

“It’s disgraceful and absolutely disgusting what the owners have done. We don’t know how it’s got this far without fans being consulted.

"They have sold their soul.

"No Liverpool fan could get on board with this Super League. It would be good to hear the manager and the players come out and back the fans on this.”

A statement from the group added: “The new format is a blatant plan for the beneficial clubs to seize even more power and revenue from an already lucrative business model.

“Owners, clubs, management, do you really care about a club’s best interests or just the bank accounts? I think we already know the answer but now is the time to think of years of tradition and do the right thing.”
Have other groups commented?

Fellow supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly are also backing the plan to have the flags and banners removed from the Kop as they make a stand against owners Fenway Sports Group’s decision to join the new league.

Spirit of Shankly tweeted: “As fan representatives we are appalled and completely oppose this decision. FSG have ignored fans in their relentless and greedy pursuit of money. Football is ours, not theirs. Our football club is ours, not theirs.”

Liverpool fans attached two large black banners on to the gates of Anfield outside the Kop on Monday morning. One read ‘Shame On You. RIP LFC 1892 - 2021.’ The other: ‘LFC Fans Against European Super League.’
What is the European Super League?

Twelve European clubs announced their intention to form a breakaway competition on Sunday night.

The teams, who made a joint statement to confirm plans of forming a new European Super League, consist of the following clubs: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
How will the Super League work?

The clubs say that 15 founding clubs - the 12 who have reached the agreement plus three who they expect to join - will be joined by five other teams who qualify each season.

They say the games will be played in midweek, starting in August, with teams playing home and away fixtures in two groups of ten, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

The clubs said that a women's league will also be launched "as soon as practicable" after the start of the men's competition, but provided no further details.

feels like both sides are playing in the media like clubs do vs each other in transfer season.

if they really unveiled this without the 12 clubs fully invested then they are dumber than i thought. and i already have a super low opinion of their intelligence after they let FloPo get up on TV yesterday and act a fool.

because they're not desperate for the money like some (all?) of the other clubs.

the report said they were basically backed into a corner last week and didn't want to be left out.

who knows how true this is though.

For starters, how did the 12 clubs not realize how much backlash there would be? Did they do no focus-group testing at all? How could they be seemingly caught so unawares?

Then, how fragile was this thing? This morning I posted that one club was maybe thinking of backing out, and 8 hours later the whole deal is collapsing.

And evidently people's jobs were on the line?

There's the idea that this was a serious move to start this league, and then there's the theory that it was never more than a bargaining tool. But either way, it's incompetent. Spectacularly so.

I'm having trouble making sense of this.

ESPECIALLY in futbol

of all the things in our society that aren't a meritocracy, 'football executive' is probably near the top.

these people can convince themselves of anything.

but yeah, I agree. Still incredible they believed this nonsense would fly.

and that returns of dozens or hundreds of millions of pounds per year isn't enough.

that enormously affected their bottom line, and some are dealing with
some serious debt.

Are they broke?

No.

But pockets are definitely being squeezed.

Owner of Chelsea and MC basically print money, because of their financial
foundation and the empires they are associated with. They basically have an
entire country behind them financially.

But big clubs like Liverpool, MU, etc, can’t afford those huge revenue declines in
the long run. Those investment groups and family owners ain’t rolling in money
like Russians and Arabians.

I don’t care what anyone says about fat mouth Perez. We know what he is,
but the Americans were the pushers of this. They have been trying to turn soccer
into a NFL structure for the longest. NFL games in England aren’t just for show.

The supporters and REAL soccer owners stood up.

years of recklessly spending too much money caught up with a few billionaires and now they want an escape route and turned to wall street. fuck them.

In the beginning, Roman was spending like crazy. It was his personal money,
but then FFP said you have to spend based on your revenue.

Getting major guap for Luiz to PSG
Selling Morata
Selling Hazard
Selling Courtois
Selling youngins
And the Mega Nike deal brought in Major cake

Chelsea was sitting on close to 400 mil of surplus loot, but was handcuffed because
of transfer penalties. But once the penalties were lifted, Chelsea went on a shopping
spree with money still leftover.

So even the buys of Havertz, Werner, Silva, Chilwell, Mendy and Ziyech weren’t
a financial burden....and all the players, except for Silva, we can flip if they don’t
pan out because they are young.

I know I give Maria a lot of shit because she doesn’t know shit about soccer...but
financially? That woman is a major boss.

Don’t be fooled – the Super League clubs gambled everything and they blew it

By Adam Crafton 3h ago

Now we know they were serious. This was not a poker game by the European elite. This was the ultimate roll of the dice; all-in on The Super League. Not a European Super League. But a global franchise, open to expanding beyond the continent.

Many suspected the big boys were posturing, seeking to railroad UEFA into future concessions. Speaking privately on Monday morning, one managing director of a major club outside of the proposed Super League admitted he never truly expected the paperwork to drop on Sunday evening. Even then, he felt the breakaway clubs — the Dirty Dozen — could be hauled back to the table, sweetened by incentives.

Perhaps UEFA would alter the entry format for the Champions League. Maybe the Premier League would receive an extra Champions League place or two, thereby enhancing the probability of the six qualifying for the competition on an even more regular basis. Others felt a greater proportion of television revenue could be diverted the way of Europe’s most famous clubs, keeping them on board for another few years before the next tantrum.

From Sunday night through to Tuesday evening, sources close to the project insisted the clubs remained deadly serious. They had an agreement for debt financing from the American investment bank JP Morgan. A plush public relations agency, InHouse Communications, had been working for several weeks on a website launch and brand. Katie Perrior, a spin doctor who previously worked for British prime ministers Theresa May and Boris Johnson, is chair of the communications agency. The legal drafts of the Super League were drawn up by the multinational law firm Clifford Chance. Documents were filed to courts around Europe and on Tuesday, a Spanish commercial court imposed interim measures that blocked UEFA and FIFA from taking action against clubs in Spain.

Some still envisaged, or hoped, that it may be a dramatic stunt. On Tuesday night, however, as the deck of cards tumbled, one after another, the fallout demonstrated the reality. Twelve of Europe’s most famous clubs had gambled everything — and they blew it.

Manchester United, the kingmakers of the project along with Real Madrid and Liverpool, are the perfect case study. Within an hour of Chelsea’s decision to pull out of the plans, Ed Woodward’s resignation from the club had been confirmed. There were moves to protect Woodward’s reputation.

It emerged he will stay on in his role until the end of 2021. Some sources indicated he had previously been considering his position. Others even said he has personally been against the Super League plan and that he remained personally committed to the UEFA reforms of the Champions League.

Many will find such a position difficult to accept, despite the best efforts of those advocating for the executive. Woodward is a former JP Morgan employee and he aided the highly leveraged takeover of Manchester United for the Glazer family while working for the American bank. Soon after the takeover was completed, he became the family’s chief of staff and eventually rose to the position of executive vice-chairman. He has been their greatest ally and his devotion has, eventually, brought him to his knees. Certainly, he would not have planned to announce his resignation shortly before 9.30pm on a Tuesday night in April.

Woodward is on his knees because United, and their conspirators, fundamentally misunderstood the challenge of breaking away. The strategy of the Super League, astonishingly amateur in its execution, contrived to alienate every possible stakeholder. They even lost the faith of sponsors, as Liverpool’s timing sponsor has now pulled out.

The club’s supporters, a long way down their list of the executive’s concerns, felt betrayed. On Monday, one supporter called up BBC Radio, broke down in tears and reminded the world that a Manchester United team, the team of Sir Matt Busby in 1958, died while attempting to play a game in European competition. The supporters were not consulted but, by now, United fans are used to that.

This became a stunning event because of the many layers of opposition. United’s hierarchy lost the support of the club’s most successful manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who voiced his opposition to the heist on Sunday evening. Ferguson was understood to be unhappy by the way the club’s current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, had been left to fend questions from broadcasters and journalists.

Solskjaer was only informed of the club’s intentions shortly before kick-off against Burnley last Sunday. Owing to their strong relationship, it is likely that Ferguson would have consulted the club’s manager before intervening publicly. And so it continued. The Glazer family lost former players, such as Gary Neville, who called for the owners to be “booted out” of English football in an extraordinary segment of television on Sky Sports.

Then came the protest from the players. Bruno Fernandes shared a post on Instagram. Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw followed on Twitter. Sources indicate that several United players were aggrieved by the club’s failure to communicate the plan before the news broke on Sunday evening. United’s players, who, like Solskjaer, felt their manager had been thrown under the bus.

The voices of opposition grew. United lost the trust and respect of their European counterparts. The UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin described how Woodward promised his support only on Thursday before acting like a “snake” over the weekend. Woodward had been a respected and influential member of the European Club Association but after resigning his position on the board and leading a breakaway, there would be no easy way back. He had lost his clout.

Over at UEFA, the uncertainty of the Super League announcement had led Flick Sports, an Australian streaming service, to pull a $60m bid for Champions League rights in the region on Tuesday afternoon. Imagine walking back into UEFA HQ and explaining that one away.

The torrent became front-page news. Prime Minister Boris Johnson threatened to drop a “legislative bomb” on the proposals. Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer led talks with supporters on Tuesday afternoon, also opposed to the Super League.

So, in the space of 48 pitiful hours, Woodward and the Glazer family had lost them all: the fans, the legendary manager, the ex-players, the Premier League, the government, the opposition. Heck, even the Royal Family condemned the breakaway.

And still, none of this mattered. Not until Chelsea walked away, blowing the plan up in flames before Manchester City swiftly followed. It is not only Manchester United, of course, who are sifting through the wreckage on Tuesday evening. Liverpool have an incandescent manager on their hands after Jurgen Klopp was sent out at Leeds on Monday night, forced to answer multiple questions about the actions and ambitions of the club’s owners. He remained furious on Tuesday and his captain Jordan Henderson was rallying Premier League captains to oppose the plans. The players issued joint social media statements opposing the club’s behaviour.

This was a level of discontent that this ham-fisted project never foresaw. Players and coaches so often ignore their club’s defects, accepting the pound signs and lowering their moral compass. But along came a plan that struck at the heart of their childhood love of football: the right to dream, the right to aspire, the right to compete. As much as their owners may have resented it, players at clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea speak privately of their admiration of Leicester City’s 2016 title victory. These players are football fans, like the rest of us, and they are invigorated even by the ever-decreasing number of upsets.

There were major and glaring flaws from the start. The grand plan had three major shortcomings. The first was the failure to recruit Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The 12 clubs had worked around the clock on PSG during the weekend, warning the club’s Qatari president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that the Parisians would be left behind, embarrassed, in the wing mirrors of their illustrious European counterparts.

On Monday night, the Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claimed PSG were not invited. The Athletic has seen documental evidence to prove PSG were in the mix but ultimately, the French club rejected the plan. Without PSG or Bayern, last season’s Champions League finalists, this always appeared a limited ambition. The calculation had been the pair would fall into line, fearful of missing out, but they saw the reaction on Monday and ran a mile. Both clubs had private concerns. When they called their peers, they sensed mistrust between the breakaway clubs. They felt the egos stirring and, as one well-placed source familiar with both clubs said, “They simply could not imagine a world where these 12 clubs happily co-existed.”

Other shortcomings emerged. The Super League claimed that the JP Morgan billions would be set against future broadcast revenue but there was no announcement over a broadcast partner. This does not mean discussions did not take place but no organisation was prepared to put their name to the plan when the clubs needed the credibility most.

In the coming days, the Premier League’s self-styled big six will seek to paint the politicking of this week on their own terms. Do not fall for it. They held the power and influence at UEFA and the ECA previously. Now they return, heads bowed, shamed, scrambling for a seat at the top table. Amid the frenzy, desperate to push PSG and Bayern over the line, the Super League club executives resigned from their positions at major governing bodies. And still the French and the Germans did not flinch.

Perhaps the ultimate failure lay in just how ordinary this extraordinary moment became. The Super League announcement on Sunday night was light in detail. The clubs told the world there would be 15 founding members, yet only 12 had signed up. They told us there would be five places available for mortal clubs but gave no information on how these clubs may qualify for the tournament. They inserted one paltry line on plans for a women’s equivalent tournament but few details on how it would aid the women’s game, and it did not include Lyon, the winner of the past five Champions League titles. We expected elucidation in the following days. We waited. And we waited. And we waited.

And, soon enough, it became clear there was no strategy. Could billionaires really be this average? The owners of the “big six” clubs and their respective CEOs lost their tongues. They did not articulate their vision to the world. They did not even attempt to win hearts and minds. They spent time squabbling among themselves, trying to decide who would be best placed to make the pitch, before realising all six clubs lacked a figure with the combination of charisma and clout to command the nation’s attention.

In their absence, a vacuum developed for those who could rip apart, morsel by morsel, the greed and selfishness that underpinned the plans. In Europe, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez took to the airwaves in Spain and it was an utter calamity.

As one rival club said: “He mouthed off on his soapbox like he runs the world. He really thought he could change the format of football from a 90-minute game just because 12 rich, old men decided it should be that way.”

Perhaps most ironically, the Dirty Dozen had already achieved UEFA reforms that shifted the status quo inexorably towards the elite. They have the best managers, they sign the most expensive players, and they secure the highest proportion of television and commercial revenue. And yet, these executives wanted more. They always want more. Maybe there should be a broadcast partner after all. How about Amazon Prime? All or Nothing. Where, for once, the richest clubs end up with very little at all.

Thanks for that.
I'm curious about Laporta and his involvement. He claimed to be opposed to the Super League while he was campaigning for Barca's presidency, but we were announced as one of the teams who'd signed on to join. And then yesterday he said we would take part if our joining was ratified but the members. That seems a little too convienent, but perhaps will allow him an "out" that he probably doesn't deserve.

with some weird shenanigans of signing brazilian non-prospects for weird amounts of money, but Rosell + Barto sped it up exponentially. That's why I was hoping for Font--while Laporta's safely capable of steering the ship, Font at least was legitimately a mes que un club based plan of action.

story--albeit, likely somewhat leaked by Laporta people--that both the club and UEFA's president are giving are that the dire finances and the months of work Barto spent on this made Laporta have to sign on to the ESL as it went forward, but the general assembly in may was always his potential out and that's his plan. Perez keeps talking and making it worse.

I hope Laporta openly campaigns for Barca to leave the super league, but he's also trying to avoid further financial issues (there might be a penalty for leaving the super league as a founder).

for the billionaires.

As Pete Donaldson on Football Ramble said right after the Saudi bid for Newcastle was looking like a strong possibility, "society makes hypocrites of us all."

There was a lot of talk when Fenway bought Liverpool that it was a major improvement in the type of billionaire. John Henry wasn't directly connected to Dubya like Tom Hicks. He looked to make his teams dominant, not just pinch pennies toward profit. He wasn't an oil oligarch like Mansour or Abramovich.

And for my own side, Edens and Sawiris have ushered in the start of a much improved era for Villa. But as fun as this has been, Edens is still a hedge fund billionaire. Sawiris runs the largest construction company in Edens. So at BEST, he's a dude just like Fiorentino Perez. Maybe with SLIGHTLY less ego. But it's still not great, man.

Shit, when Villa fans were waving pound note printouts at Gareth Barry, we were helmed by a born-on-third credit card tycoon.

yeah, at some point he has to break free from Pep. But go to like a Burton or Wycombe or some third-division Spanish side first. So there's a little bit of wiggle room for you to figure out your ideas before you go into a team that's devoid of unity and with a pissed-off fanbase.

I get they thought they were going to get their own Pep/Zidane. But those are special, special dudes. Even Clough fucked up a big job before landing the job that he'd go down in history for.

And I’m no Arsenal apologists. The club is clown city.

However, they played really well today, but couldn’t finish
Without Bam, Lacazette, etc, it’s almost impossible for them
to get goals.

They are competitive based on his football tactics. They should actually
be worse than what they are. They still have a chance to secure CL
play through Europa .but it’s going to be tough.

It pains me to see Willian out there looking past it.
Players LEAVE Arsenal. They don’t request to go there.
Still can’t believe him and Luiz requested to be transferred
to Arsenal.

That was a straight red card. Clear and cut.

He stumped into the players leg while clearing the ball. It wasn't
intentional, but it was still a dangerous act where a player could
have been injured. It was a call based on the letter of the law.

We see it all the time in the NFL regarding helmet to helmet contact.

I love the kids movement, I really do, but dude is wasteful.

We should be up about 3 goals

Anyway, the school of tuchel: Your chances will be outside the
box. His defensive organization is impressive as hell. He only allows
teams to take chances outside the box. I cant recall a game under him
where the opposing team had players getting lots of opportunities
inside the box.

The back four players are always in front of the action and breaking up plays, and Mendy can see everything coming.

We are still toothless in the final third though....our finishing is still bad.

anyway, another MOUNT masterclass!

Chelsea attacking hard!

I’m loving this front three of mount/Werner/Pulisic.

Tuchel is really going for it today!!

Makes sense to get some away goals.

Great game so far.

Yeah, defensively, RM looked terrible. Marcelo is past it. He never
was good defensively, but his offensive game is not there anymore.

Vinny was absolutely invisible. He wanted no parts of this game.

Mount was focking game on!

Man, if Werner knew how to finish? Shiiit.

However, Benzema saved the day with a goal ..a very important one.

But then the huge rain pour came, and the game slowed down somewhat.
Both teams went for it.

Kante was all over the pitch, and leaving Madrid’s MF In the dust.
Pulisic had a good game, great movement and work rate and he scored.
Mount was solid. Chelsea’s defense kept everyone in check, except
for Benzema.

Werner was absolute trash in the box. Wasted so many opportunities, and blew
a second goal. His movement is insane, because he has great speed,
so he helps speed up the attack....but his final ball is always trash.

Chelsea has the away goal, but they should have gotten more. So it feels
like a slight let down. 2 away goals would have put a lot of pressure on RM

Tuchel’s strategy, formation and lineup were spot on. He really went for it.
He must do the same next game. Get out in front fast, and the go defensive.
We don’t give up tons of goals.

PSG do your focking job and beat Man City tomorrow.

I was 100 percent wrong about Ngolo Kante being washed. I rewatched the game.
His performance brought a tear to my eye.

It was all Lampard’s system. That’s why he looked terrible for the past
year or so.

I would probably still sell him because he is 30, and he is value is still the
roof right now. But he his still the best defensive mid in the world!

Nidi’s the future though.

Kante what a performance...

They kind of pulled it together just enough after the red to keep it from 3 or 4-1.

Dunno what they do in the 2nd leg though. Seemed like City had 80% possession in the 2nd half. That probably can't continue.

but also there was some bad luck in there.

Wall breaks down on a pretty standard free kick.

Navas gets caught on a cross that goes in.

And they did what they were supposed to do. Dominated.

Mason Mount’s first touch on that long ball pass was
beyond wonderful, then he distributed a splendid slip pass between
two defenders to Havertz for the score.

Havertz and Werner looked good, but they always look good
against weak competition. But I’ll take it.

Mendy man of the Match for me. Those saves were insane.

the title race is no longer compelling, but the 4 team game of musical chairs for the other 3 CL spots is fuckin great. unfortunately the bottom 8-10 teams are not great so there are some rather uncompetitive ganes.

im a napoli guy myself. not for any emotional reason, just followed Dries Mertens when he left PSV (the only club i actually do have emotional affinity for). Chuky Lozano's move reinforced that obviously as another PSV alum and a Mexican to boot.

i also like to watch Sergej Milinkovitch Savic and Luis Alberto as much as possible so Lazio is another team i like. CL play this year wore them down but Luis Alberto last year was downright brilliant. i learned so much about midfield play watching then last year.

Our previous discourse was about “the socios” and Perez, and
I told you that Perez had zero power to push stuff through on his own
, and that it wasn’t going to get pushed through without support. I told you
there was going to be serious pushback and that it wasn’t going to
fly.

MANU being a publicly traded company, it's possible that enough supporters could pool their money to take a significant stake in the club, and force changes from the boardroom.

As a supporter, fock United. However, this is about the spirit and rules of the game.
The players did nothing wrong. So to penalize them would be, not only unfair, but
It would be a misuse of power.

Hurt their pockets. Limit their transfer opportunities. But do not disrupt or tamper with the natural order of the table.

Italian side Roma have confirmed that Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the club's next head coach from the start of the 2021/22 season.

Dismissed as Tottenham boss just over two weeks ago, the 58-year-old has made a swift return to the game after penning a three-year contract with the Giallorossi.

Anyway, get your arse back down to the middle table,
and watch your boy jack get splinters in his arse from sitting
on England’s bench behind Chelsea’s finest.

in the CL final makes you feel dirty.

And I started watching Chelsea before Roman, 2001 to be exact.

So watching PSG every week leaves you in a bath of rose petals and
and lavender?

both are clubs owned by owners who own oil businesses, and have deep
political ties, and it doesn’t matter when it started.

You’ve been dirty, so why speak like your squad is on holy ground?

And as much as I would love for Pep to smash Madrid, just like old times, I cannot ever pull for Madrid to win. I'll take the snoozefest that City/Chelsea would likely be over Madrid even having a chance at another trophy.

Let's go Chelsea. End them.

We just beat their ass in the FA tourney....be happy to do it again.

Score 2 goals and put the clamps on. That all we need to do Tomorrow.
