Roger Goodell: We expect full stadiums in 2021

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 30, 2021, 3:45 PM EDT

The NFL is optimistic that fans will be filling up stadiums across the country for the 2021 season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said today that the league’s goal and expectation is to “Welcome back fans across the country at all NFL stadiums.”

“All of us in the NFL want to see every one of our fans back,” Goodell said. “Football is simply not the same without the fans and we expect to have full stadiums in the 2021 season.”

NFL attendance was 1.2 million in 2020, a huge drop from the upwards of 16 million who attended NFL games in 2019. Whether the NFL can get sellout crowds in every city in 2021 remains to be seen, but with America on pace to have most adults fully vaccinated well before the start of football season, the outlook is positive.

It's obviously motivated by money, but to your point, if like 75-80% of the country is vaccinated by then, it could be reasonable.

My gut reaction is still like 'ew, full stadiums? I'll pass'.

And yeah, Goodell definitely after that paper, so I don't trust his motivations, even he is somehow right.

It doesn’t prevent you from contracting COVID, it prevents you from getting sick IF you contract it. I don’t think they have enough data yet, but you may still be able to spread it to others, albeit it’s probably not as likely. I’m sure the preventative measures will loosen up as we go along, but 100% capacity seems like a bad idea in the immediate future.

That being said, I’m sure some restrictions will understandably loosen, especially at outdoor venues, but I wouldn’t throw your masks out just yet.

Everyone who wants to be vaccinated will be vaccinated. Based on what we've learned so far, the vaccines are very effective at keeping people out if the hospital.

So why the fear? Pack em in tight.

I can't really figure out what's so inflammatory about what he said.

He said "expect to", not "WILL"

Every baseball stadium in America is opening to some degree this week, and vaccinations are pacing really well.

I dunno, seems like he made a prognostication that was as realistic as it was optimistic.

..But we're currently dealing with a pandemic that has people so turned around that they actually think that getting vaccinated means its over.

I've seen people already arguing in public about it (claiming that they didn't need a mask to entire public establishments because they're vaccinated).

Goodell knows that most of this country doesn't really read the fine print and their banking on it. That's why its dangerous and irresponsible to make such a bold statement this early in the game.

Sitting outside in the cold for 4 hours is not appealing . It’s not very fun in warm weather either (I went to a Dolphins game in 2017 and ZzzZz)

Basketball and even hockey are so much more fun to attend in person

college football of course is the best. MLB is better if it's a nice day and there is plenty of open seats. NHL better. NBA is too dependent on nice seats, so push. but hell, I'd rather go to most soccer games.

But a Ravens game is turnt af, like a college experience but in a downtown metropolitan city, dozens of bars within walking distance, a lax tailgate environment and, most importantly, a good team

seeing it live was great, usually in the upper deck so I could see stuff tv doesn't show, and cheering with 60,000 other people is a great feeling.

But too many obscenely drunk (mainly) white dudes fighting, vomiting, and yelling slurs left and right.

Just absolutely nothing that I wanted to be anywhere near.

...game against the Giants where they tried the infamous “swinging gate” trick field goal and failed spectacularly. Toxic crowd that night - shirtless men in 25 degrees everywhere.

at least at 50%.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Might motivate the anti-vaxxers in FL, TX, etc...to actually get the vaccine

We should be at herd immunity through vaccination by week 1

The Biden administration is doing a phenomenal job on covid
