There comes a point when you just let things past you by. It’s evolution.

This is that point for me.

There basically trading and buying highlights like baseball cards, mainly
using crypto.

Futuristically, this is going to put sports shows out of business, and create even
more paywalls and exclusive content. Sooner or later you will not be able to find
anything on YouTube.

If I own the highlights and they are still on YouTube and being shown
on ESPN, that’s no real value...

Its like what sneakers have turned into.

Everything is being turned into a commodity.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

like, I understand cryptocurrency even if I can't predict its value.

I do not understand what buying an nba top shot actually gets you and why you'd care beyond the possibility of value speculation

The title for the post reads like something she'd propose on The Jump.

To answer your question, I don't understand the outrageous price tags folks are forking over for the highlights, nor do I understand why Tyler Herro would want to invest money in this, but that's perhaps because I'm old and washed and this type of thing isn't for me. More power to the folks that actually prosper from this.

Anything can be turned into a market. Keep in mind we buy water as human beings.

They have also turned bets into a stock and options. Shit is crazy.

You can place a bet, and instead of waiting for the results, you can sell
that bet to another person.

I wouldn’t say I’m too old to get in. I’m just tired of all the over the top
technology.

Like I read the Complex article and the FAQ on nbatopshot.com but I still have no idea why a market for video highlights that anyone can watch on YouTube or on Sportscenter exists?

Like will the rights to the highlights at some point port over to the owner of the Topshot?

But then again the thought of someone paying $1M+ for a piece of cardboard (baseball card) is equally as perplexing, so what do I know.

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 2?

https://www.bleacherreport.com/articles/2930587-inside-nba-top-shot-the-digital-highlights-marketplace-worth-millions

I don't think makes any of this make sense, but at least you undestand what's going on.

also important to remember is that the company behind topshot, had already created this a few years, but it was called crypto kitties, and people bought/traded these...digital cat things using blockchain tech

https://www.engadget.com/2018-08-30-cryptokitties-gods-unchained-blockchain-art.html

the market got really hot then flopped, and so they repeated it but put this nba highlights wrapper around it and called it nba topshot

No real new insight— just wanted to join the discussion

I feel like we’ve had conversations over several years about actual buying stock in players the way we sometimes debate them. This is a version of that turned to real life cause a “moments” value is tied to how a player is actually doing in real life over the course of their career. My boy who is referenced above is going with the strategy of buying bonafied players and moments vs trying to speculate on James Wiseman or a random Patrick Beverley layup.
——

Me and my boys had a debate one it last night. One got in early and has made 40k.
It’s a scam but so is everything else. There’s a market for it and it will grow once they actually promote. Can they create a way to make it sustainable and not bubble and crash? Make it more than just collectibles?

Who knows? But the structure and licensing behind the highlight clips along with the NBAs blessing you own highlights clips in this format but not the highlight itself was the highest hurdle.

Looks like it’ll move to other sports next: ufc, nfl, mlb

Then to movies and entertainment. Imagine owning a “Luke I a ma your father” moment.

Will follow up on where the $ is right now and if hes pulled anything out.

In terms of tv rights --I think the simple answer is theyve partnered with the NBA so that they could commodify the highlights to create ownership within the platform without giving away actual rights. They needed the NBA partnership and cosign to be able to do that

He says hes spent 4k of his own money. This was surprising to me becuase hes generally risk averse --and while most of our crew was gambling and betting he mostly stayed away.

Good question on withdrawal. Im guessing its in his account --but i didnt ask him explicitly. I will follow up

Mike Ryan is all over this...which isn't the least bit surprising. He said he spent about a stack...including $800 for an Obi Topin, corner 3 pointer LOL. Anyway...he was explaining the withdrawal situation. He said there is a 6-8 week verification process. Before you are verified, you cannot withdraw any of your money. After that...you can withdraw only in $1000 increments, every 30 days. Adam Lefkoe was part of a group that paid over 200k for a LeBron dunk against the Kings, from last season.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

Upon further research, the NBA and PA are in a revenue sharing agreement with
Dapper Labs, the creators and administrators of the market place.
Customers can purchase Digital Collectibles of basketball moments.
The NBA owns the rights or the Intellectual Property, so ,basically ,the customer is simply purchasing a piece of digital art

It’s similar to buying a music album, which can be collected and re-sold,
but the record company owns the masters or rights to the music.

Each digital moment is a NFT ( non fungible token), which cannot be duplicated,
divided or multiplied, unlike regular crypto. And there are an infinite amount of NFTs
on the blockchain.

It’s pretty easy to understand, especially if you have any experience with trading.

My problem with this is , if you’re not tech savvy, where you can create Bots and
APIs to get you ahead of the game, you’re going to be in the back of the line.
They have huge Queues for their highlight drops, so if you’re not able to get in at
that moment, then you will be forced to buy at high resell prices, similar to what happens in the sneaker market.

If the same company had issues with Crypto Kitties, where the platform was not sustainable, how do they expect to sustain this? Crypto Kitties were more like a
cult following compared to this

And the fact you can only withdraw a certain amount at a certain time sounds
too Ponzi scheme to me. If you have a lot of money invested, it could take
years just to withdraw it all. But it’s easy as hell to deposit money!
