"Tiger (HBO Max, Hamachek/Heineman/Gibney, 2021)"

Part 1 aired this past Sunday and Part 2 airs next Sunday, and I thought I'd be surprised there wasn't a thread about it but after watching, I really feel like this is missing a lot without Tiger himself involved. Granted it means we get some honest portrayals of all the people around him, but it also means, especially in Part 1, that we get a lot of people projecting their hopes and fears onto him while the archival footage doesn't always do a great job of revealing how much of Tiger in the public was a performance vs. his honest thoughts.

Kinda hard to tell how much of that feeling is a hangover from The Last Dance, I guess. Part 1 otherwise is brisk and as somebody who's not at all interested in golf I can say all that old footage of Tiger had the same effect as The Last Dance of transporting me back to that time when it seemed like phenoms were popping up everywhere: Garnett, Kobe, Griffey, Federer, Manning, Tiger. It's wild how much of this story I knew just from watching SportsCenter every night after homework.

...But that's another knock on the doc too, and I think without whatever Rachel Uchitel is gonna say in Part 2, the whole thing does just feel a little salacious and unnecessary - like an HBO Max thing, not an HBO thing. The most engaging part of Part 1 is arguably when his dad's old golfing buddy goes all performance art on he and Earl's philandering - great TV, but we all knew that story, right?

Anybody else hoping for a little bit more out of this or am I being a little too hard on a doc that was always gonna be difficult to mine new information out of?

Interviews with like 3-4 people and apparently really contrived around 8 hours worth of interviews with Uchitel. I have a feeling part 2 is going to be i naive and in love, stuff like that.

They build you up to tear you down...

Honestly, I didn’t know much about Tiger outside of golf

and as someone that doesn’t watch golf, I thought the doc did a great job of capturing his impact as a celebrity

I remember a lot of those shots and moments on the green

It definitely has a tabloid element

I could do without the ominous background music throughout the whole episode

We know where we’re going on this ride

Honestly though, I didn’t know much about his personal life prior to the downfall

The late night talk show appearances as a toddler didn’t hit me as possibly damaging
I didn’t know anything about his Dad
He always seemed so unaffected by it all...actually seeing him being mobbed like that was f’n frightening

I thought they did a great job of setting up part 2

It’s painful to watch, because we all know where we’re going...I’m not sure how you start off differently without it looking like a fluff piece

A bit of a tabloid feeling because it’s all testimony from peripheral figures in his life...

But I’m sure people close to him don’t want to participate in something involving Uchitel

It’s a horror story about American celebrity...how do you tell it differently?

They tried though

I still don’t feel like I know what happened with the car accident

...doesn’t matter...

Unless it’s coming from him, it’s always going to feel like an angle

I’d be in for a series in his own words

Piecing together still photographs, broadcast clips and other people’s opinion/perspective...still leaves a gap in the story

Tiger.

idk why there was such an imbalance between parts 1 and 2.

but i think since his personal life was so boring (relatively) pre-scandal...they tried to drag out as much suspense and intrigue from that part of his life in the 1st part. and it came across as thin and contrived. the dark/foreboding music was way too heavy handed too.

on the other side...there was so much substantive material to stuff into part 2 that all they had to really do was just lay it out as it happened and it was compelling enough.

im surprised they left the 'hey its tiger' voicemail out of there tho. that became a meme in itself.

Good luck ever getting Tiger to participate with anything for HBO again.

Gawker used to roast that dude bi-monthly a decade ago...

Now he's wearing bowties with the H•A•T•E finger tattoo but NOT the L•O•V•E and looking like a baseball writer from the 1930s?

LOL perfect casting

I think it's a true testament to his skill that he's as popular as he is, cuz dude has the personality of a retired insurance adjuster.

Other legends like Jordan, Gretzky, Rice were just effortlessly cool as fuck on and off the field, but I can't imagine Tiger sustaining a multi-part doc.

Because that’s kind of the whole point

His father contrived and cultivated Tiger’s entire public image

We have no idea who he really is...and even Tiger is probably still searching for that

Pretty cool af watching a black man in a red shirt killin’ crackers at their own game...IMO
