at least in and around bigger cities.

as a new golfer who recently caught the bug i'm seeing it on the public courses in la.

brands like eastside golf and malbon are doing things differently. and then there's drake who recently came out with a stupid expensive line of nike golf products. shit, even hypebeast as a standalone website dedicated to golf swag.

i'm gonna assume the game is still stuck in the past in rural and suburban areas (like most things in this country). and it seems like a lot of the dudes on tour come from these areas so i'm not surprised the sport isn't progressing as much as it should. but trends don't start in small town america. there's definitely something brewing under the surface and I wouldn't be surprised if the game as a whole looks a lot different sooner rather than later. especially as companies realize there's a shit ton of money to made by diversifying the game and their product.

I've never even been to a golf course, and never did any golf at all besides a couple times at Top Golf or mini-golf with my kids. a few months ago though I got a cheap set of golf clubs from the rewards program at my job. (I was able to choose from a list of rewards for my 15th anniversary, and the set of clubs looked the most interesting.)

I've only been going to the driving range but I'm really having fun with it. The reason I'd never gotten into golf is I'm 6'5" and was always told I'd need custom clubs because of my height. I figured choosing this cheap set as a gift was a no cost way to try it out, and if I stick with it I'll get fitted for a custom set.

Next step is signing up for some lessons, and I'll go from there if they recommend that I need longer clubs immediately or not. Plan on just going to the range through the winter, and maybe I'll start actually golfing next spring...

especially addicting if you're a former athlete and/or a 35+ yr old adult who would prefer to not tear an acl participating in a pickup game.

it's you vs yourself on an endless quest to figure out all the different aspects of the game. it's literally the hardest and most frustrating sport to play, but the journey to become better is essentially crack. high highs and low lows that will keep you coming back because perfection is impossible yet hitting a ball pure and/or a low scoring round will have you feeling like you're on a percocet.

i started off on the range for a couple months then transitioned to the course. the course vs the range are essentially different sports, but hacking away at the range for a couple months and gradually improving there (while getting a lesson or two) will probably let you know if the sport is something you want to continue with.

probably need to do a lesson myself but it ain't cheap out here in LA. so youtube has basically been my teacher and i've been learning by trial by fire on the course.

Tried scheduling some lessons but most spots are booked out for a bit. A buddy of mine told me I should chill on going to the range too much until I get lessons though because I'll start developing bad habits which will be tough to break.

my dad and brother are scratch golfers, i didnt play with them that often growing up but lately I got the bug. went from breaking 90 to breaking 80 to shooting par but have yet to finish under par.

for you, i personally recommend just playing as often as you can. im not really a range guy. i think you get better playing the course. ive also never believed in paying for lessons, but easy for me to say when my dad and brother were there to always point out mistakes i was making. my buddy paid for hundreds of dollars of lessons and he got *worse*. i think a lesson is good for them to give you few pointers on your swing but the moment they have you doing shit like holding a golf glove inside your armpit as you swing (real thing) - it may just be for show.

totally stopped golfing this year though. only played 3 rounds. i dont have the major itch to go play every weekend like I used to. hopefully i play more next year though.

and I did not watch "the match", Bryson and Brooks are two of the most annoying players on tour.

Syracuse has a GRIP of cheap public courses in the surrounding area. Dropping 5-20 bucks on a round of golf (with a thrift store set) was a great way to spend a spring morning when you had later classes. That was also the year that one of the majors was won (or challenged) by a guy using fairway woods to chip onto the green and I have a vivid memory of hitting a 5 wood chip (with an old wooden head 5 wood) about 150 yards and laying up perfectly on the green.

sorta silly to defend a guy who's a multimillionaire in his own right but man he was the good soldier for PGA and took all the arrows for like two years, then they go and do this unbeknownst to the players? If I'm Rors I'd be hot. Liv offered he and Tiger half a B each.

There are 2 things they needed and it was not players:

-Money for the elevated events, if they could have waited 2 years to announce those LIV would have fizzled out, but they acted quickly to keep more defections from happening. Ratings are down and sponsors were not going to want to keep footing the bill to subsidize scrubs getting paydays at the bottom end of fields.

-Shield themselves and the sponsors from discovery in the LIV lawsuit. Everyone knows what would have come out on LIV's side, but what could have come out on the PGA side could potentially result in violations of free trade/monopoly protections as well as maybe losing their tax exempt status.

because they want to do it. They are doing it because it is the logical thing to
and for the futuristic survival of the PGA.

This is business, and business strategies constantly change based on the direction and
mission of the business.

closed the gold window

PGA has zero leverage.

They don’t own the masters, the British open or the US Open…and that’s really
all players truly care about…so keeping players out of the pga championship wasn’t
going to mean anything….

So might as well merge so that you don’t become obsolete. It’s business survival as the
the culture of business changes.

That’s all it is.

and getting some players to “fight on that lie”, when it was always strictly a business issue.

Even Trump said players would be stupid to NOT take that Saudi money, because he saw it for what it was. When Trump can see through your intentions, you know you’re doing some extra shady shit lol.

Also going to be interesting what the players can do to remove Monahan from the Tour/Player organization aspect. If Monahan is not removed from the tour it would be similar to Goddell being Commisioner and head of the players union.

As a fan of Thursday, Friday golf and cut sweats i am upset about what this may turn into. The team aspect i believe will go away for the most part unless they get Callaway, Bushnell and other sponsors to pick up equity stakes in the team.

Feel really bad for guys in the 70-75 range who may lose their cards and lots of money in this if these guys are given any kind of retroactive points or status. Also some Euros and a few Americans will lose Ryder Cup spots in all likelihood and that sucks.

In response to Reply # 46

Our government constantly speaks out against them, and players only go over
there if they can’t get into the league or get kicked out of the league…no elite player
is going to China no matter how much is offered.

China has zero chance of sports washing anything in America…

Saudi on the other hand, well, that money will just come back to America
anyway…they basically invest in our economy in exchange for military protection…

And it’s only with golf..which has always been individualized

Best soccer leagues are in Europe. Best basketball league is in America. Best baseball
league is in America…only thing Saudi and China will get from that are players well
out of their primes to get their last big day. Ronaldo, etc..No elite prime players are
going to those countries no matter the amount of money that is offered.

just gonna put my Wimbledon thoughts here

Eubanks played great but didn't quite have enough, still nice to see him make the quarterfinals

Djokovic probably getting 24, hope plays Alcaraz again and he fairs better this time tho.

Women's side I don't know them as much but liked seeing the upsets so guess sorta rooting for the Ukrainian
