"While coaching 3b in Montreal, I held up a runner at 3rd base out of “respect” for the other club. Frank Robinson almost grabbed me by the ear and said to me: “Listen son, you only have enough runs when you’re showering after a win” #unwrittenrules"

it's OK to swing at 3-1, but that tends to be a pitcher's best pitch and you'd rather let them barely miss the zone and take your base than scrape the ball painting the corners
edit: which is why I agree with Johnny Bench that you swing on 3-0 whenever the opportunity presents itself because the stakes are highest for the pitcher and lowest for you - it's literally the best time to swing!

first they fought statistical analysis 20 years ago. the last few years have been a big struggle about "unwritten rules." how anyone can even keep track of all them is beyond me.
here's the real issue: the new crop of exciting, talented, young (usually black or brown) players want to play the game with a little flair and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. but the old, dusty (usually white) baseball players, coaches, commentators have to take issue with something.
like bat flips. why in the fuck shouldn't someone flip their bat after a home run. it's fun. it gets the crowd going. it hurts no one. in Japan they flip their bats to the goddamn moon and no one takes offense. just strike them out the next time, you cowards.
