"How will Patrick Ewing be fired, by cell, text or landline? "
Sat May-16-20 12:04 AM by allStah

His termination is inevitable. 8 players have transferred out
of Georgetown’s basketball program since Patrick Ewing has
been there. These are prominent players transferring, not
players who aren’t getting any time. The most recent
transfer being Mac Mcclung.

Ewing told Andy Katz that Mclung was returning to the
university, but Mcclung had yet to decide his basketball
future. I think that was the final straw for him, so he
decided to leave the program.

whether or not he should be is separate (he shouldn't: the
program was in shambles when he started and there are
fundamental problems a coach can't fix easily and he deserves
two more swings before we decide he's got no shot).

his recruiting has been solid, especially considering the
debacle of this season and if he could just open a better DMV
connection and/or land some of the higher ranked targets for
2021, i'd be happy with the program trajectory. Akinjo had his
own opinions on how to play the game. McClung leaving reads
like a guy who believes his press for being an athletic white
guy (dude is not a PG, but if he wants to try to sniff the
NBA, he has to be and Ewing recruited like he's an undersized
SG /story).

The frustrating thing, watching the team, is the defense. the
defense is a mess. if he could fix the team's defense, his
team's offense has actually been quite good.

This right here. How many games have they had the lead until
under 5 minutes in the second half? Better yet, how many big
leads did they blow?

It'd be one thing if he just had bad defenders on the
team--and some of them were. But it's a lot of scheme/planning
problems:

-he didn't commit to the press when it was a really good idea
with te team
-so many bad close outs
-so many times two people helped instead of one

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

just better.

People forget that the Rockets barely beat the Knicks in 7
games in 94. If that series goes the other way a lot of
people’s legacies are viewed differently.

The Pacers were no joke either, they made the Eastern
Conference Finals something like 5 times in 7 years.

...who first took the Bulls to 7 in the conference semis that year, the might have had a chance the next few years.

But exchanging Mark Jackson for an aging Doc Rivers and X-Man for soft-ass Charles Smith were both not-so-good looks. Especially the later.

...dragging their heels in general. The organization talked a big game about wanting to re-sign X-Man, but then tried to sign Harvey Grant for (what was then) pretty big money (he was a restricted free agent and the Bullets matched the offer).

Shoot, they tried to complete the Charles Smith/Doc Rivers trade before X-Man signed with Boston.

So for all their "We were going to offer McDaniel more money than he got in Boston" talk, they never actually committed.

Obviously off the top best wishes for a speedy recovery to Big
Pat. Dude was such a monster at the NCAA level and a force in
the pros, too, hard to think about someone so strong and
fierce battling this virus. I talked to a friend, a former pro
athlete, who beat Covid recently; he's a little younger than
Pat but not too much. He gave me a lot of hope for people in
this situation.

As far as GTown, go back to when they made the hire. It was
classic nepotism. There was no John Thompson IV to hire so
they went with Pat. They need to stop living in the past, big
time. Then again looking at their recent history, it's not
hard to see why they would want to turn back the clock. But
that's like trying to compete with the locomotive by breeding
a faster horse. Get someone forward-thinking in there and stop
GAF if he is an outsider.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If Georgetown hires a great young coach with no ties to the
school and he does well there, he’s probably leaving for a
bigger and better job within a couple years. The new Big East
is still a strong basketball league but it’s not a
destination league for anybody anymore.

In response to Reply # 0

They’re a small, academically grueling, Jesuit school
steeped in a monolithic basketball tradition that they either
can’t outrun or are too afraid to attempt to.

Structurally and aesthetically, as an Institution Georgetown
is not unlike Providence or DePaul, albeit with better revered
academics.

What Big John was able to do should be viewed as an anomaly,
not a norm. Somewhat akin VCU going to the Final Four, or
Butler going to two title games.

The differentiator here is of course the ocean of talent that
is our area. But when the academic rigors are what they are,
the fan base is as small as it is, and the prestige of the
program is rooted in the 80s...well, where really is the
allure to a 17 year old kid from PG County or Baltimore?

Ewing was put in a tough tough tough spot here. He inherited a
program that never should’ve gotten as good as it did and
will likely never be as good as it was again. Worse yet,
he’s just another symbol of a now-unattainable bygone era.
But he’s understandably loyal to the school and especially
to Big John. So he’s doing his best and trying to make
lemonade. The inspired hire to make, some 5 or 6 years ago,
was Chaka Smart - knows the Mid-Atlantic, progressive mind,
but representative of the spirit that made Georgetown
Georgetown.

Georgetown fans are not plentiful here in the DMV - it’s an
odd mix of (white arrogant) alums and (black 50+ year old)
grasping locals. They’re not a huge and special fan
base...because it’s not a huge and special school. But boy
does the vocal contingent of this fan base think they deserve
a huge and special reputation.

I think what’s missing here is the simple fact that Patrick
Ewing has been unable to connect with the players on his team,
specifically his own recruits, who have all transferred.
That’s the more telling part with all of this.

What I do know is that the recruits aren’t special and the
program isn’t poppin. A coach has to be especially Dynamic
and persuasive to overcome that

That's conjecture? Starters and stars are leaving, not bottom
players, and that does not all fall on the institution. Ewing
is responsible as well, and it's not a good look for him or
the program.

The lack of communication between him and Mcclung regarding
his future is another Red Flag, and that has nothing to do
with the institution. Either Ewing was clueless, or it was an
attempt to get Mcclung to change his mind, either way it
illustrated a lack of leadership and communication as a coach.

"It was a number of different events that made me feel I
had no choice but to transfer from Georgetown," McClung
told ESPN. "I really wanted to stay, but things
throughout my career made me realize that I couldn't... I'm
looking for a place I can call home. A place I can be a part
of a family and help them succeed."

When you have your own recruits dropping left and right, as
well as other players on the team bolting out the door, that's
more than just an institution thing. Those are red flags in
regards to the Coach not being able to connect with the
players.
