Just read WA banned gatherings of 250+ people.

I'm dealing with figuring out some shoots at work over the course of the next month or so, and it's been incredibly fun.

I'm fortunate enough to have a good full-time gig with the ability to work remotely, but freelancers are already hurting. The industry is slowly shutting down it seems. Shit, traffic even seems to be less of a headache.

I think most people in LA are expecting and preparing for this to get nasty here given a few factors (main port of entry from people traveling from affected countries, the sheer number of humans in LA county, the local demographics in relation to affected countries, etc). Lots of anxiety and uncertainty right now. Not fun at all.

Though it’s not official, I imagine the A’s/Giants pre season Bay Bridge series will be cancelled too.

I think Mayor Breed said the ban is two weeks, but I imagine it’ll be longer. The word is that the US is essentially two weeks behind Italy, so we’ll see how crowded the hospitals are two weeks from now.

Shit is weird out here. I’m guessing that Boston is next.

But if you live in a city where it's at now, and you're careful with going around older people for 14 days after you get back, whats the harm?

I live in Los Angeles. I work in Hollywood. If I go out to get lunch, it's possible I'm walking near people infected. What else can I do other than follow the handwashing stuff, not touching my face/ears/nose/mouth?

Until things are locked down...there's zero reason to not live life right now.

Being in your city and area is one thing, but hopping on flights to other cities and areas is another. That is how it spreads. virus to new host.

That is why you have to be locked down. If you have it, the point is not to spread it to anyone else, or contract it, where you can spread it to anyone else. The goal is to have life, not about just living life. Sometimes things have to literally stop, which what people in this day and age do not understand.

Remember when you had the chickenpox as a kid? You had to stay home until you were cleared by a doctor to be social again. It's a virus. The only true way to stop it until a vaccine has been created is to contain it, so you can't just do things as normal. That is why the military is not letting anyone in our out of New Rochelle.

Going to work or necessary places is one thing, but going to unnecessary gatherings of huge populations in a situation of a virus outbreak is irresponsible and reckless.

And then people are not thinking if they go to a place, they could get stuck there if it is immediately locked down.

No chances can be taken which is why Europe is lokc

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/coronavirus-cancel-everything/607675/

“When the influenza epidemic of 1918 infected a quarter of the U.S. population, killing tens of millions of people, seemingly small choices made the difference between life and death.

As the disease was spreading, Wilmer Krusen, Philadelphia’s health commissioner, allowed a huge parade to take place on September 28; some 200,000 people marched. In the following days and weeks, the bodies piled up in the city’s morgues. By the end of the season, 12,000 residents had died.

In St. Louis, a public-health commissioner named Max Starkloff decided to shut the city down. Ignoring the objections of influential businessmen, he closed the city’s schools, bars, cinemas, and sporting events. Thanks to his bold and unpopular actions, the per capita fatality rate in St. Louis was half that of Philadelphia. (In total, roughly 1,700 people died from influenza in St Louis.)”

of the NCAA tournament or playing the tournament behind closed doors. It's inevitable that the NBA will follow suit. It only makes sense.

Several NCAA Conference Tournaments have already been canceled.

Italy has cancelled all sporting events in its country.

A virus is replicated via the cells of a host. So the amount of hosts or people populating an area must be reduced or banned until the virus hopefully runs its course or a vaccine can be created to prevent people from getting infected.

Germany reported that up to 70 percent of its population could become infected.

I don't think the NBA playoffs are going to take place, with how the virus is progressing in the US. NY set up the first containment zone.

This generation or era of people have never experienced an health outbreak such as the spanish flu or bubonic plague, which is why there are lot of people who are in disbelief or apathetic about it.

This is no joke, and hopefully over time this virus can be stopped. Entertainment, sports, etc are all secondary. I will just enjoy as many games as can.

WHO has already declared it to be a global pandemic

* March Madness will go on in Tampa and elsewhere, but without fans?

https://www.tampabay.com/sports/2020/03/07/march-madness-will-go-on-in-tampa-and-elsewhere-but-without-fans/

Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the Tampa Bay area. For the latest news on the outbreak, go to our coronavirus page, which we are updating regularly. You also can sign up for our DayStarter newsletter to have the day’s news sent right to your inbox each morning for free.

Barring spectators from NCAA Tournament basketball games, including those scheduled March 19 and 21 in Tampa, is “not a rational strategy” for the association at this moment and is “very unlikely,” the association’s chief medical officer told the Wall Street Journal.

“I think a worst-case scenario is that it’s played behind closed doors,” Brian Hainline said Friday. “It would be very, very difficult to cancel a championship and have it at any other time.”

Concerns about the coronavirus have led to event cancellations in the U.S. and abroad. On Friday, the South By Southwest festival, which brings hundreds of thousands of people around the world to Austin, Texas, became the latest event called off to prevent the virus’ spread.

The NCAA’s options include screening players before the competition, screening spectators or relying on spectators to heed public service messages to stay home if they don’t feel good, said Carlos Del Rio, chairman of an NCAA advisory panel on the coronavirus.

All-session tickets for second and third-round games at Amalie Arena include six games and are available through ticketmaster.com for $210. Florida State is considered a favorite for a top-seed in the Tampa regional.

* As coronavirus hits Tampa Bay, no changes yet for WrestleMania

https://www.tampabay.com/sports/pro-wrestling/2020/03/02/as-coronavirus-hits-tampa-no-changes-yet-for-wrestlemania/

Hillsborough County identified its first case of coronavirus on Sunday, a little more than a month before Tampa hosts a major international event at Raymond James Stadium.

That would be WrestleMania, which is expected to draw more than 70,000 fans from more than 60 countries around the world on April 5.

Last week, WWE officials told the Times the company was monitoring the coronavirus epidemic, with chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon saying, “The health and safety of not only our fan base, but also our superstars, really does come first."

On Monday, Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, said in an email that his team had “nothing to add” on the coronavirus front; as did a WWE spokesman. For now, the WWE and Sports Commission will continue monitoring its spread and adhering to public safety protocols. (Other major sporting events coming to Tampa Bay in the next month: IndyCar’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the PGA’s Valspar Championship and two rounds of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.)

“There are active and ongoing discussions at play internally, like there are in any sector of American business, and certainly families as a whole," John Saboor, WWE’s executive vice president of special events, told the Times on Thursday. "I think those will continue.”

WWE superstar Drew McIntyre, who lives in Tampa and will wrestle Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, told the Times on Monday that he remains focused on what’ll happen inside the ring, not outside.

“The company’s monitoring the situation,” McIntyre said. “Regarding me, I’m just focused on my job at hand, which is entertaining the people.”

dude that's the last thing you should be thinking about right now....just hope our dumb ass president will wake up on how serious this is. But luckily states can call their own shots, which is why NY did what it did.

Shit getting canceled is no issue. There will always be other events to attend when everyone is healthy again, but until then be safe.

I realize Track & Field isn't one of the major sports and this isn't a huge deal, but this is something of note since Track & Field is pretty major for Jamaica.

I believe the Penn Relays as of today are still a go.

In response to Reply # 0
Wed Mar-11-20 03:52 PM by Marbles

The NCAA pulled the trigger. No fans for men or women's tourney games.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/2020-ncaa-tournament-games-to-be-played-without-fans-in-attendance-due-to-coronavirus/

In response to concerns over the spread of coronavirus, the NCAA announced Wednesday that only essential staff, players, coaches and limited family will be able to attend the 2020 men's and women's NCAA championships.

"I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance," NCAA President Mark Emmert in a statement. "While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States."

100% most of this is a legal liability issue. Yes, it's serious. But it's not exactly Contagion or anything. People SHOULD be doing all the things we're being told as far as hand washing and sanitizing, etc but it doesn't mean people should just stay home.

In response to Reply # 43

And it will be infinitely worse if we don’t treat it as such.

https://imgur.com/gallery/HOEhoF8

It’s very contagious, we don’t know what the death rate is (although it is exponentially higher than the flu and just as contagious) and US governmental agencies have done almost nothing to help.

We don’t even know how many cases there are or where they are because as a nation we’ve done 472 tests.

472!

South Korea has done 109,000. And they’re only just now beginning to see cases level off and that was after a strong governmental response and a public health system that makes ours look like 16th century medicine with leeches and shit.

We have no response, one of the worst health systems in the world, and people arguing that not only should we not isolate ourselves, but we should be holding 20,000 person sporting events!?

This needs to be treated extremely seriously.

That they implemented 2 months ago. New cases have decreased and athletes are being called back by their sports leagues. Things are slowly getting back to normal.

Italy recently shut their country down, so they are scheduled to hopefully return back to normal sometime in April or May. We should be implementing the same tactic so we don’t inhibit summer events and business affairs.

Damn.

Apparently, the illnesses of the players prompted the league to cancel the games. One of the team’s doctors came running out on the court to talk to the referee, and after that the game was canceled, and will be played at a later date.

They didn’t state anything about a player testing positive for Covid 19, but it’s still being investigated.

Dude what?

We don’t know if players will be fine. The problem is that a person is infected and is infecting other people who could/will have major complications from the virus, especially people 30 and older. Everyone does not have the same immune system which is why people need to be quarantined immediately.

I don’t think you fathom how serious this is.

Lonzo Ball tried to go back out there and play, but Ingram was like dude get off the court.

Smh.

No disrespect. You’re not very bright in this situation. And you seriously need to educate yourself. Being a millionaire has no influence on what the virus will and will not do, same thing with age. It simply has to do with having an immune system that can deal with the virus, young or old. And some young people have died from the virus.

China locked down their entire country for 2 months for a reason. No one in or out. That is how you stop the spread of it.

And the major action is to stop the spread of it, so when someone is infected they must be locked down immediately until it is out of their system or they are cleared

Which I've gotten from my father, who's a pediatrician.

The problem is that there isn't a lot known. We know it's a type of flu, but it's not something out of "The Stand" or ""I Am Legend." As of now, there's no reason to believe that it's going to destroy the world's population. The most susceptible are the elderly, or people with respiratory issues, or compromised immune systems. If you do get it, stay at home, rest, drink lots of fluids, and all the responsible shit you'd do if you have the flu. If you're in one the vulnerable populations and you get it, see a health care professional.

Rudy Gobert isn't going to drop dead tomorrow. Or the day after that. He'll be isolated and get treatment. He's rich and he has the resources, and he's a 28-year-old, pretty damn healthy basketball player. He's also hasn't necessarily infected every person he came in contact with in the past two weeks or days or however long he's had it. I don't expect everyone who played in the OKC/Jazz game and all the support staff and team employees to come up positive for COVID.

The scary thing about COVID is that we don't know the denominator, and we won't know it for a long time. Right now it looks like the percentage of people who die after getting it is higher than the normal flu, but we don't and can't know right now exactly how many people have it or will get it. I know it sounds grim, but there's going to need to be a much larger sample size to really ascertain how deadly it really is.

Being cautious is smart. Which is why I don't blame NBA for suspending the season. Especially since, by all appearances, the Boston outbreak was likely caused by that BioGen leadershp conference. At this point, it's a liability issue for them.

Don't be like Drumf, and try to Cuban B everything and pretend it's a hoax, but don't assume the end is nigh. Wash your hands and be smart.

Oh, and be prepared for it to be worse by next year. Hopefully there will be a vaccine by then.

And if there's a doctor in the house who wants to correct anything I've said, have at it.

And we do know the death rate is exponentially higher than the flu, we just don't know if it's a factor of 100, or of 10,000.

And the point isn't whether a healthy rich 28 year old will get sick and die, it's that all the people he passes it to may or may not be so lucky.

That's how viruses work.

Again, I'm not super educated on infectious diseases and this is something we haven't truly seen before so I'm more than fine being wrong.

But it seemed yesterday that things were slightly less severe. They probably weren't. So yeah.

I have said it doesnt seem as serious as some were saying. I wasn't shitting on people for being cautious, and I asked people questions. I also changed my position.

And about THIS specifically?

I said the players would be fine. They will be. It's not ABOUT that, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they'll be fine as people with insane access to money and resources you and I don't have, not to mention the fact they're athletes and in tip top condition.

If you want to say I'm backtracking because I'm changing my position as more information comes out then do you I guess. I'm looking at it as evolving my position on something, rather than just sticking to an opinion in the face of evidence. You know. Like people do on Twitter.

your direct reply to concern that an infected person "is infecting other people who could/will have major complications from the virus, especially people 30 and older. Espn, reporters, players, they don’t even know what to do. And they are shocked that the players are not being allowed to leave. They have to be cleared by the state’s health official. They might be forced to stay in that stadium for weeks. They just can’t get on the plane and go home. China would have locked them up immediately.

They have to be immediately

You know how many people are infected now? That shit is throughout the city now.

Don't try to be a reporter and give insight on information or data that you are not a part of, or provide information with no resource or source to go by. You already post for attention, so don't make it worse

It goes both ways.

The ncaa is basically individual bodies with their own rules and restrictions, so some conferences will continue to have games.

Should be interesting to see if the league tries to stiff the players and if so, who powerful the player's union will fight to get the player's their checks.

I know Cuban said he was willing to pay non-players their wages as if the season was still active.

Will players still get paid?
That, it would appear, depends on whether the games eventually get played. Because there’s a clause in the NBA-NBPA collective bargaining agreement – Article XXXIX, section 5(b) – that discusses this exact scenario. It defines a “Force Majeure Event” as any number of extraordinary circumstances, including “epidemics,” that bring the league to a halt. And it states:

“If a Force Majeure Event occurs and, as a result, one or more Teams are unable to play one or more games … then, for each missed game during such period (the “Force Majeure Period”) that was not rescheduled and replayed, the Compensation payable to each player who was on the roster of a Team that was unable to play one or more games during the Force Majeure Period shall be reduced by 1/92.6th of the player’s Compensation for the Season(s) covering the Force Majeure Period.”

In practice, this means: If the Thunder and Jazz never make up Wednesday’s game, the $38.5 million the Thunder owe Chris Paul this season becomes $38.1 million. If every remaining Thunder regular season game and the entire NBA playoffs were canceled, it would become $28.7 million. The league’s highest-paid players could stand to lose around $10 million.

Now, some or all contracts may very well have their own clauses that counteract this. Some players may have insurance that protects them. All of this, however, highlights how strong the incentives are, for all sides, to eventually finish this season in one form or another. Because the reason player compensation would be undercut? It’s tied to team revenue, which would diminish with every lost game.

How much money could teams lose?
NBA teams average around $2 million per game in revenue from ticket sales, concessions, in-arena merchandise purchases and parking. That’s according to a Yahoo Sports analysis informed by 2018-19 Forbes data and several sports economists. And for every game shelved, that estimated $2 million is lost. In its entirety. If the rest of the regular season were scrapped, that’s a very rough estimate of $518 million down the drain – or 1/18th of the NBA’s annual $9 billion of revenue.

Then there are the local sponsorship deals, and, of course, both local and national broadcast contracts, all of which are affected. But many of these, experts say, will have their own “Force Majeure” provisions, or insurance that indemnifies the league in these worst-case scenarios. The NBA, sports economist Andrew Zimbalist says, “Probably has cancellation insurance and makes good arrangements with TV networks, so additional losses will be moderated.”

“Of course, the other thing you lose is the emotional impact of the games,” Zimbalist continues. This is the intangible consequence of cancellations. It’s the 10-year-old who goes to a game, then asks for a jersey for his birthday, then becomes a fan for life. “That’s a seminal moment in the formation of their fandom,” Zimbalist says. And if games are canceled, for some time, “that won’t be there anymore.”

So the answer to the question — How much money could teams lose? — is largely unquantifiable. What is known is that the impact, even from one night of canceled games, would be eight figures. The impact from two weeks of canceled games would be nine figures.

And whatever money is lost? It’s money lost for the players as well.

Will this impact next year’s salary cap?
Per the CBA, NBA players must earn 51 percent of the league’s basketball-related income. The salary cap, therefore, is a function revenue. When revenue takes a hit, like it did amid the NBA’s China controversy, cap projections dip. In 2017, the Warriors’ crusade through the playoffs meant several fewer total playoff games and contributed to the cap falling $2 million short of a $101 million projection. The cancellation of weeks of games, not to mention the rest of the season, would have a far more significant impact. It would affect free agency, player earnings, and the competitive future of the league.

The line from 2019-20 revenue to 2020-21 cap is far from direct, though. Cap expert Larry Coon explained in an email to Yahoo Sports: “The cap is set based on projected revenues for that season. Under ordinary circumstances the previous season is the best predictor of that, and they normally set the cap by taking the known values for the national TV money and adding a 4.5% bump to the remaining revenues. But obviously, that doesn’t work under circumstances like these. Since this season’s revenues will be a poor predictor for next season’s revenues, they’ll do something different.

“Following the 2011 lockout they played an abbreviated season, so it was a similar circumstance (revenue-wise) to this one. That year they agreed on an amount to use for the cap and luxury tax for that season, and used that amount as a minimum for the following season’s cap – it could get higher, but it couldn’t get lower. I suspect they’ll do something similar this year.”

So, in summary: Missing games would have an impact on the cap. But perhaps not as drastic an impact as lost revenue numbers might suggest.

Who else will suffer financially?
The class of NBA-adjacent humans harmed most by the suspension of the season, however, isn’t the millionaire players or billionaire owners. “LeBron James is not eating ramen next week if his salary is cut and he's not allowed to play,” sports economist Victor Matheson told Yahoo Sports. “Mark Cuban is not downsizing to a 1989 Corolla because he's losing money.

“It's definitely the hourly workers that are hurt the most, because none of them have any sort of vacation benefits, I can assure you that. And the sort of person that has that job typically does not have deep pockets."

It’s the everyday folks whose names you don’t know, who serve you hot dogs and monitor metal detectors and fuel the NBA’s nightly entertainment machine. “It’s not about the team,” Cuban said when asked what concerned him following news of the suspension. “It’s about the country and life in general. … I’m concerned about, now that we’re not playing games, what about the people that work here on an hourly basis?”

Later, he continued: “I reached out to the folks at the arena and our folks at the Mavs to find out what it would cost to financially support people who aren’t gonna be able to come to work. They get paid by the hour. This is their source of income. So we’ll do some things there. We may ask them to go do some volunteer work in exchange. But we’ve already started the process of having a program in place.”

The upcoming Khabib vs. Ferguson match is probably in jeopardy of being cancel because of this mess, which has me conflicted because it's probably the right decision to make, but damn that's a fight I truly want to see.

Because if the world gets its shit together by May, then the impact of this thing *could* be greatly diminished. Emphasis on "could." But it requires drastic measures worldwide, starting now. Which, luckily, it seems most places are starting to take, whether by federal mandate or otherwise.

In response to Reply # 0

Investigative information has been submitted stating that China's claim about the Country's recovery is 100 percent incorrect and fake. People are still in quarantine, and individuals have yet to be allowed to leave their homes, or enter places of business.

New cases have not gone down, and that numbers are being under reported or misreported.

It's contingent that China will allow people to leave their homes some time in April.

This is going to be a huge problem. We are not getting proper reporting from our government, nor are we getting proper reporting from foreign countries.

I'm seriously expecting the worst case scenario

This no random stuff. The numbers by China should be taken with a huge grain of salt, because there is a lot of under reporting and misreporting, as well as information from our government.

It was reported that they were allowing people to slowing get back out into the public, but it is now being reported that the information is not true, and the situation is being under reported

And this is a thread to share information....nothing more nothing less. Not an official news platform

real for a lot of people aside from the actual coronavirus. A lot people are still like "I'm bummed, I can't watch my favorite team on tv" which is understandable on some levels but most fans have no idea how many people are working behind the scenes or out of the spotlight to pull off a major sporting event. A lot of those people that work at these arenas and stadiums and other service industry jobs surrounding these venues are about to be hurting real bad.

The fighters technically aren't employees of the UFC since they are all independent contractors and even worse the fighters don't have any union support to fight for their rights, so they pretty much are at the whim of whatever the UFC decides.

I just hope the fighters and the trainers have access to Covid-19 tests since I have no clue if the UFC will try to get any for them.

Dana White is a piece of shit human and I long for the day that he fucks up and gets his chain yanked.

I'd listen to a dog before I'd listen to Donald Trump on anything but especially this.

Also, fuck fighters talking about 'Let us fight, that's how we make money. We risk our lives every fight!' It's not about you, shitbirds. I can see why Dana is fucking them niggas with no vaseline out of money because a lot of them niggas is birdbrained.

You know how many gyms/BJJ gyms etc are closing? That's how they fucking make money. Y'all aren't fucking special.

I watched some of the card last night and it was amazing how:

1. Not worth it/unenjoyable it was
2. Just how many chances for transmission there are. Which no shit, it's cage fighting but people are dapping up, interviewing fighters, 3-person corners still. This is going to go sideways real fast.

I hope someone ends up taking them to the fucking cleaners over this shit.

Think about where this shit is after we started talking about last week.

My state Illinois is decent with its restrictions, but people here are still doing silly stuff. Everything has been shut down, and stores basically have nothing, but people are still going out and populating the streets.

Ohare is a total fucking mess, people cramped all over each other, and federal officials are not doing anything about it. Meanwhile in China they are quarantining all arrivals for 14 days, because they just had a recent uptick in numbers.....However, again, in ohare you got people breathing and spreading germs on each other, and no tests are being administrated. Just imagine the amount of people who are going to get infected..

Peace, love to everyone. I'm already dealing with some medical issues due to a recent injury, and my doctor called and canceled the appointment, and is going to do it via phone. Hospitals are limiting access if your situation is not considered an emergency or critical. They are trying to prevent the healthcare system from being inundated, as well as limit exposure.

2 weeks ago we weren't dealing with any of this. What will the next two weeks give us?

How many poor people have/are spreading this thing and don't have any idea? When will the tests even be available to the general public?

They ran lung MRI scans on young adults, and the findings were alarming. These patients had no underlying conditions or a history of health issues.

I was in the ER just 2 weeks ago (not a serious thing, just messed up an already bad knee) and I overheard casual conversations between the nurses and doctors about it. Like “Oh yeah, I guess I’ll put on a mask. Who knows?”

Today I’m sure that same ER is going nuts and they probably ran out of masks. Not blaming them for a slightly cavalier attitude, just the timeline of this whole thing getting serious is blowing my mind.

Test the entire saints organization and who they have been in contact with as well as who Sean has been in contact with. Go back 14-30 days, since he just recently started showing symptoms.

I know this is the sports boards and all, but it's annoying to read about whole teams getting first dibs on these Novel Corona Virus tests given how rare it is for folks that are much more at a health risk not having access to the test yet. I'm bitter cynical bastard and I'm aware that the rich and famous normally get access to the finer things in life, but I didn't think class and status dictating basic healthcare would rear its ugly head like this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression even teams/personnel were only being tested if they interacted with or came into contact with someone who tested positive.

either way it's completely fucked up and just shows again that the rich will always get preferential treatment, even in complete chaos

This is wrong as hell too.

Teams and players started getting tested once Rudy Gobert tested positive, and no one knew how long he had been infected. So you go back 14-30 days of all the teams that the jazz faced, and Brooklyn was one of those teams, so they all had to be tested.

Then you got to look at all the teams that the nets faced, and so and so on.

This is why the nba jumped on it by being PROACTIVE and not waiting for players to show symptoms. They had great probable cause. And they were right! Now you got players popping up positive because they got tested.

Get the fuck out of here.

You need to address your government. This has nothing to do with the NBA. They will always have great access to the best medical doctors, equipment and tests, because they are athletes who are susceptible to serious injuries. This situation just falls in line with that.

And I commend them and the league for taking leadership in getting players and staff tested as soon as possible. Athletes can be super carries because their Ian constant interactions with players, fans and media from different states and countries.

You are way off and wrong.

This is a complete racist situation because the majority of the league is black. The NHL , MLB, NFL ,and international soccer leagues and teams are doing the same thing. And we see players and staff are coming up positive.

Talk to your government for disregarding and ignoring the impact of such a vicious outbreak.

And yes, you're right about points of contact - but the fact is there are many MANY normal people who've come in contact with someone with this and they aren't getting tested. It's obvious that athletes and celebrities with money are able to buy tests....I mean, Bob Myers even said as much.

If you or I had symptoms, it's possible we couldn't even be tested.

It's weird you're making this out to be more than it is, which is a complete and utter failure of our system.

That’s crap.

The president attacked the NBA and is trying to change the narrative. And this is in that same line. Leave athletes out of it.

Just say the healthcare system is not focusing on the American people the way that it should be, so that people can have the access they need.

And again athletes having great medical access has always been that way, whether it’s surgery, scans, diseases, etc. This is the benefit that the league offers, just like a job offers medical benefits to its employees.... and just like people with jobs get better medical benefits and treatment than people without jobs or people who are indigent.

You were already foolish and ignorant regarding this entire outbreak, so don’t double up on that.

Disclaimer: just talking about the subject, not targeting you.

And those tests were and are being sourced through a private company. They are not using State resources. And like you already stated it was the state health officials that required jazz and thunder players to be tested, and the testing went on from there to curb the domino effect of Rudy Gobert testing positive. They were actually being responsible.

So I’m with Roberts. They don’t need to apologize for anything. It is the responsibility of the federal government to ensure all states have access to test kits.

“There's nothing irresponsible -- if you've got that information -- about trying to get the tests," Roberts told ESPN on Wednesday.

"The problem that more of us can't get the tests -- and I'm not apologetic about saying it -- in my view, that rests at the foot of the federal government. They were responsible for making sure we were protected in that regard and I think they failed. Roberts said. "People should not be having to wait in line. The at-risk population should be the first to be tested. But goddamn it, if the government had done what they were supposed to do, we wouldn't be competing for an opportunity to be tested."

wouldn't be the first time rich & famous people got special consideration from a public agency.

I mean, I hope no one here thinks that if a grandma came down with it and 30 of her family members showed up at a city health clinic they would have gotten the same treatment.

Hell if a ballboy had shown symptoms they would have sent his ass home, along with all of his coworkers, with no tests.

There are a thousand stories just like that already.

All other teams have released the names of players who have tested positive. I wonder why the lakers didn't release the names of the players who tested positive? I'm pretty sure the media is going to want to know.

Now you think about the different teams that NBA players face, the different cities they travel to, and the different airports and fans that they interact with. It paints a huge grid of how many hosts could be infected from the interaction of nba players. And I would associate that observation with all sports that have played through this current winter.

Marcus Smart stated that he tested positive, but the Celtics stated that 1 player tested positive. So now what I’m getting from that, is that it’s up to the player whether he wants his name to be disclosed or not?

It appears that Star players are revealing their test results, where others want to keep their names to be confidential? It should be mandatory to reveal the names of players who have tested positive.

Who are those lakers and other 3 nets players who tested positive?

People who have been in contact with said players have been informed they have been exposed, beyond that they don't need to release to the media. We as fans certainly have no necessity to know this information.

I don’t know. In this situation, I would have to disagree for tracking purposes. The whereabouts of those players prior to being tested are very important. From going to the store, going to the airport, interacting with fans, interacting with other players, nationally and internationally, I think the public should know.

What if this guy went into a store, etc, and shook hands and hugged a fan? That can be tracked. That’s why people are revealing they have it when they test positive, so that others who have been around them can get themselves checked out. The

Yes, its crazy. That's exactly why it must postponed. Bringing people together (physically) is the last thing we need right now.

In response to Reply # 0

Originally, I didn’t see sports taking place for a long time.

But now?
Doubt shit stays locked down for 60 days. Leagues and players want to play despite people dying. I’m willing to bet any money in a few weeks some leagues will resume playing behind closed doors.

They will push a narrative about being able to control it with extreme sanitary measures as America tries to get the curve down. With the statements Trump is pushing and how he is underplaying everything, and stating he may remove the lockdown in two weeks, one of these leagues is going to move forward.

These billionaires are throwing fits right now about revenue being lost....

For one thing, California is still going to be shelter in place for a while longer. He's much more likely to extended the order at the beginning of April rathat than end it. He's not going to waive it so that the NBA and the MLB could hypothetically play games, even in front empty crowds.

And this is also especially true in NY, which is now the epicenter of the outbreak. No games are getting played there any time soon.

NBA is done. MLB maybe starts in June.

I hope they stay locked down. But Trump is vigorously pushing another agenda.

And I can see leagues doing it behind closed doors. We are talking about America here. And even with the California locked down, people are still crowding beaches, so that lets you know what the people think.

I’m telling you there will be a team or a league in America that will
Play. I can’t see this capitalism ass country doing like all other countries and staying locked down for at least 60 days. It’s only been 2 weeks, and as American Covid-19 cases continue to increase rapidly, the narrative is dead focused on getting the economy back up and running ASAP.

I hope I’m wrong.... but Americans and the greed of Americans want what they want, and history has already proven that. Hell it happened during the 1919 Spanish flu pandemic.

211. "Losing big sports events cost Tampa Bay some $360 mil (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

And the Super Bowl was supposed to be here in 2021.

I'm not posting this to mourn the loss of money. The big wigs are gonna get theirs. I'm not thinking about them. To me, what's more important is the economic impact on the workers in service industry. We're a heavy hospitality region and a ton of workers are gonna be affected by this.

***

https://www.tampabay.com/news/health/2020/03/27/losing-big-sports-events-cost-tampa-bay-some-360-million-in-economic-impact/

In successive announcements earlier this month, the coronavirus pandemic wiped out five major sporting events in the Tampa Bay area — March Madness, WrestleMania, the Valspar Championship golf tournament, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the final days of spring training.

The empty seats stood to mean fewer tourists to stay in hotels, dine at restaurants and shop at stores.

The total in lost economic impact: somewhere between $290 million and $390 million, according to a Tampa Bay Times analysis.

“It hurts a lot,” said Michelle Gacio Harrolle, director of the Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program at the University of South Florida. “When there’s no sports, there’s no events. It really trickles down to everybody.”

To quantify that trickle-down effect, the Times looked at economic impact estimates for all five events from previous years. Then we ran the numbers by Harrolle, who has studied spring training and the Valspar before.

Add up all the best guesses, and you get a back-of-the-envelope estimate of around $360 million in missed economic opportunities through direct or indirect spending.

Economic impact from sports events is best measured afterward, many experts say. And critics in the academic world say impact reports often are exaggerated, anyway, varying so widely that questions arise about their accuracy. In 2018, for example, Clearwater estimated the Phillies’ spring training impact at $70 million, then a year later put the figure at $44 million.

What’s more, the five sports event cancellations announced in early March came just as the impact of coronavirus was spreading across all segments of society. Now, hundreds of millions in potential losses from the five events pales in comparison with the widespread shutdown of all local restaurants and some hotels.

Still, the biggest financial blow would have been the loss of WrestleMania 36, moved from Raymond James Stadium to a closed set at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. The April 5 event would have brought the region 50,000 hotel-visitor room nights, said Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.

Previous economic impact estimates for the event ranged from $165 million (last year in New Jersey) to almost $182 million (Orlando in 2017).

“The reason it’s so high is because everyone is from out of town,” USF’s Harrolle said. “They spend a lot of money, and they’re here for multiple days.”

Long stays from out-of-town Valspar and NCAA Tournament visitors never materialized, either; both were called off well before competition was set to begin March 19.

In 2015, Harrolle estimated the local impact of the PGA Tour event at $51 million. March Madness hasn’t visited Amalie Arena since 2011, but Jacksonville and Orlando each brought in an estimated $10 million as hosts for recent first- and second-round games, according to Jacksonville University and the Central Florida Sports Commission. Higgins expected the Tampa Bay area to net 13,000 hotel nights from the NCAA Tournament.

is like a religious holiday and Cardinal baseball drives the local economy on multiple levels. Blues hockey is shut down in the middle of the season after winning a Stanley cup. March madness games and other basketball tournaments shut down. So people might find it funny but the BattleHawks were drawing the biggest crowds in the XFL. Not to mention all the redneck monster truck/motorcycle shit that goes on here.

I’m sure sports teams will get money from the stimulus package. Money will be allocated to each state, and each state will allocate it to the different industries within the state. The sports and gaming industry will be part of that.

So whatever businesses he has in America, he will get some type of relief. However, I imagine the NBA will look to restructure salaries if this pandemic goes on for an immense amount of time.

Different sport, and different country, but Lionel Messi cut his salary by 70 percent to help out Barcelona’s financial situation due to the pandemic.

these rich ass white dudes always delude themselves into thinking theres some mythical balance where their business can thrive like normal and public security/health is maintained in a rapidly growing crisis.

‘instead of running from the virus and shutting everything down...we need solutions’.

shutdowns are the solution you dickhead. thats how countries are flattening the curve. its just not the solution you want because youre losing money.

sports is cancelled until there's a cure/vaccine. PERIOD.

ESPN really been annoying me with all the NFL free agency and draft shit. like, enjoy those new free agents who won't be playing because there's no NFL season.

forget about playing in empty arenas. just forget that.

IF YOU HAVE A SPORT WHERE HUMANS CONTACT EACH OTHER, SWEAT, SPIT, BREATH, ETC. ON EACH OTHER...IF THERE AIN'T NO CURE YOU CAN'T FUCKING DO IT.

i know it's a business outside of entertainment, but some people need to take a seat.

There’s a lot of people who have taken this similar tone, spouting on about how NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. Like we can’t laugh at jokes, be entertained by distractions, escape with our music. I’ve seen it on these boards heavy for the last week. If you feel that way, if you’re really that sternly focused right now, then I commend your conviction.

But the truth is I know I need escapes, and NFL Free Agency is a fine escape. Jay Electronica’s album, Tiger King...I’m downright thankful to have this stuff right now. We can play the “none of it matters” game all we want, but we’d mostly all just sound disingenuous and no fun.

I’m not trying to make light out of what’s a super serious global crisis. But I don’t like this line of thinking because a) I don’t think most people who say this stuff even believe it and b) escapism is healthy for us right now.

Maybe clarify?

What you said is that NFL free agency coverage is bullshit and that entertainment is being pushed out for business interests. I’m saying that I’m glad we have NFL free agency coverage and entertainment, and I’m not sanctimonious enough to deny the fact.

If things are so bad that we're still largely staying home in September, there won't be shit else to do BUT watch sports. Ratings would be through the roof.

All the players and staff could be tested regularly by the rich owners who will be hungry to make sure they can still salvage some revenue instead of punting the season entirely.

We've already seen that wrestling is still being widely watched/discussed without audiences-- and they feel like potentially *the* most audience reliant sport there is, lol.

I think there's a very real argument to holding the games without fans, even without a vaccine. Routine testing of players and staff combined with fans stuck at home needing an escape combined with owners desperately wanting to eke whatever revenue they can out of what would otherwise be a lost season... seems like a natural combination to its continuation.

And none of this is even considering the tremendous pressure politicians will be under once the first wave of this disease has passed to get things back to as close to "normal" as one can.

Like, even if we all agree "this is a bad idea"-- and I agree that fan attendance of sports games without a vaccine does not seem like a good idea-- certain aspects of "normal" life will absolutely be returning regardless. Even if it goes away again when the disease inevitably makes a second wave. There's just too much money to be made and too much demand from an audience starving for a distraction. So I feel like empty stadium games feel like a decent compromise, if push came to shove.

cuz, they are gonna come in contact with whoever they come in contact outside of the game, who those people then come in contact with a whole other crowd, etc. etc.

even if you test everyday, some shit is gonna slip thru. so you gotta convince the players to literally risk their lives. and, some probably will...but most are so rich they don't HAVE to do it if they don't feel like playing russian roulette with their lives.

the whole thing is a reach.

and say let's get after it

there's a lot of support staff required to playing an NBA game...coaching, trainers, medical staff, etc.

the arena would require a fair amount of workers to make it possible.

television production would also require their people.

it's not so simple.

In a conference call with major league sports commissioners on Saturday, President Donald Trump said he believes the NFL season should start on time in September, sources familiar with the call told ESPN.

Trump also said he hopes to have fans back in stadiums and arenas by August and September, sources said, although it is currently unclear if medical experts find that to be a realistic timeline amid the current coronavirus pandemic.

... and just sending them out into the void, as per my athletic director's instructions. The good thing is that my distance crew is in one of the rare situations where this doesn't actually disrupt their training that much. The DMV hasn't restricted going outside for exercise, and they don't need a track to get a lot of this work done. They just can't do it together.

It's pretty weird though. Our spring sports season hasn't technically been canceled, but obviously it's going to be - even if we just get to mid-April and you get week-by-week cancellations instead of one big one. Ordinarily, I'd start pulling back on the volume in about a week or two and start letting them build speed, but that seems beyond silly. At the same time, admitting that we're not going to race and trying to get them ready for cross country would be way easier but somehow seems like cheating the regular structure of the season somehow? I don't know how to describe that exact emotion, particularly when I'll probably get over it soon.

I have received some evidence that some of the runners are doing some of the workouts. And folks seem to like it, so I'm going to keep it up. It'll be like a weird shadow season.

cool to hear from somebody who gets it by experience. i've got one boss who is weirdly optimistic that we'll get some season left. luckily, he's not in power to make any dangerous decisions himself, but i'm starting to *want* to believe him.

http://www.fieldofschemes.com/2020/04/14/16045/heres-when-and-how-sports-leagues-are-pretending-they-will-start-up-again/

ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who first reported last week that MLB was looking at playing whatever it can salvage of a season entirely in front of empty stadiums in Arizona starting as early as May, now says “it seems like it’s going to be Arizona or bust for major league baseball,” at least to begin the season. Added Passan: “And they have to get to the point with themselves where they say ‘this is what we’re going to try to do, even if we can’t ultimately pull it off.'” Given that USA Today has calculated this would require quarantining nearly 10,000 people (counting players, support staff, food and hotel workers, etc.) for four months, and testing them constantly with tests that don’t currently exist in quantity and aren’t likely to anytime soon in part because of a medical Q-tip shortage, that’s an important “if.”

there has been a push to expand seasons but now it seems hard to imagine "seasons" that are more than a handful of weeks long. if that. i think it probably makes the most sense to just not have seasons until we are at a point that it is practical to do so.

i wont be surprised if we get 3 on 3 nba tournaments instead. i dont know how you do something similar in the nfl. i guess extremely shortened games and arena rules?

i think if we get anything within the next year it will be something like that. all games happening in the same venue and players isolated during the whole period and then some.

You got dudes with 9 figure contracts to play 5-on-5. They aren't giving that up for Big 3.

https://www.ufc.com/news/ufc-249-statement-jacare-souza

UFC Statement on Jacare Souza

The middleweight bout between Uriah Hall vs Jacaré Souza will no longer be on the UFC 249 preliminary card due to one of Souza’s COVID-19 tests indicating a positive result.

In addition, COVID-19 tests for Souza’s two cornermen were also flagged as positive. UFC’s medical team examined Souza and his two cornermen and found them to be currently asymptomatic, or not exhibiting the common symptoms of COVID-19. As per UFC’s health and safety protocols, all three men have left the host hotel and will be self-isolating off premises, where UFC’s medical team will monitor their conditions remotely and will provide assistance with any necessary treatment.

From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible.

There have been no other positive COVID-19 tests reported from the remaining athletes participating in UFC 249.

The response to this development is indicative of the effectiveness of the health and safety measures UFC has put in place for this event.

Saturday's UFC 249 card, which airs live on pay-per-view and is headlined by a battle for the interim lightweight title between No. 1-ranked lightweight contender Tony Ferguson and No. 4-ranked Justin Gaethje will proceed as scheduled with 11 bouts.

I mean Jeremy Stephens is a fucking anti-vaxxer and believes the virus is spread through food.

So you can test people but you've still got morons who you can't really account for.

Also, the 1,200 tests the UFC has on-hand could be used for communities that actually need them.

that fighters had to sign about non-disparagement related to their COVID protocols.

Also, the laxity of the protocols throughout the card was telling. Some people had masks on, some didn't. Again, it is just a matter of time at this rate until there is an issue. I mean, thankfully Jacare drove to the event since he lives in Florida. As there are more events and more people flying to get to them there is mor

Justin Gaethje fought the fight of his life out there and ended up putting the final nail in the coffin of Khabib vs. Tony. Really impressive to see his evolution and the adjustment he made at the end of 2 that really changed the course of the fight.

I don't think Gaethje has the answer for Khabib no matter what people say of his collegiate wrestling pedigree but it's a great fight. Everybody got fucked out of a lot of money though. No way Khabib vs. Gaethje has the same build as Ferguson vs. Khabib.

Will the UFC follow up with the folks that needed extended hospital stay or even worse surgery to ensure they don't catch either the corona virus or COVID-19? I saw on social media that Ferguson got his eye busted up pretty badly and I think he got a busted orbital, but I could be mistaken.

I truly hope folks fighting on the two upcoming cards don't get caught out there all because the UFC desperately wants that ESPN money.

There isn't a cure for the virus yet and folks are putting themselves is added harms way for a paycheck. That bothers me. I don't care about feeling better about myself for having that opinion.

Like I said, if you disagree, cool. I'm not here to convince you or change your mind.

There were supposed to be no in-octagon interviews but Rogan insisted. There were supposed to be no-contact based greetings and people were supposed to be wearing masks as it was clear from the broadcast that went out the window quick.

Sooner or later it is going to become a problem.

The only sport, to me, that can truly go on right now is Tennis and Golf.

They already have social distancing in their sport. players play a huge distance from each other, and they play their own balls.....and fans are not needed because both games require silence when players are in play.

Georgetown Coach, Knicks Legend Patrick Ewing Tests Positive for COVID-19

NICK SELBE

Georgetown men's basketball coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing has tested positive for COVID-19, Ewing announced on Friday.

“I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19. This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly,” Ewing said in a statement. “I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Now more than ever, I want to thank the healthcare workers and everyone on the front lines. I’ll be fine and we will all get through this."

Per Ewing's statement, he is currently in isolation and under hospital care. No other members of the Georgetown men's basketball program have tested positive for the virus.

After being hospitalized with COVID-19, former New York Knicks star and current Georgetown men's basketball coach Patrick Ewing is at home and recovering, his son announced Monday on Twitter.

"I want to thank all of the doctors and hospital staff for taking care of my father during his stay, as well as everyone who has reached out with thoughts and prayers to us and since his diagnosis," Patrick Ewing Jr. wrote in his post. "My father is now home and getting better. We'll continue to watch his symptoms and follow the CDC guidelines. I hope everyone continues to stay safe and protect yourselves and your loved ones."

Ewing, 57, announced on Friday that he was in a hospital through a statement released by Georgetown athletics.

"I will be fine and we will all get through this," Ewing said at the end of his statement.

my Dad retired last summer and I was looking forward to going to Neyland with him this fall (he couldn't take off much during football season).

due to his age and some recent underlying conditions, I don't see that being likely for us, until maybe a year *after* a vaccine is found or better treatment is discovered.

Usually hit up two SDSU football games and a few SDSU basketball games each year.

I will be taking the next few years off from all of that and probably won’t attend a game until 2022.

But I will probably watch games on TV once they start up again.

It definitely won’t be 2020-21.

Even if they somehow have sports with limited crowds it sure as hell won’t be any fun for awhile, even if you weren’t worried about safety.

if they're doing socially distanced seating (which I don't expect to happen), decent contract tracing, and it's in a region/city without an (re)outbreak.

I live in NYS so I won't be going to any sporting event within 100 miles of NYC for a long time.

Also I'm much more likely to go to an outdoor event.

All available evidence (so far) and preliminary case studies so far show that being outside is infinitely safer than being indoors.
