I love the scrappy overachieving identity they had, but those are the seasons I attended the least

To be honest, if they are forging a new path as contenders they need a new coach.

Love what Atkinson has done but management seems to want to turn the page and the parting seems mutual, not based on dramatics from the bench

Dudes are balling playing hard every night. The shine of LeVert.

They just had huge wins against the Celtics and Spurs

I just don't trust GarPaxDorf to get it done. Atkinson would have THIS bulls team in the playoffs.

He turned a Bulls reject into bonafied goto guy/fringe allstar (Dinwiddie) and helped LeVert develop into his full potential even after a serious injury. Imagine what he'd do with LaVine, Lauri, Coby, WCJ, Gafford, Valentine and Hutchinson...and whoever the hell we draft this yr.

In an effort to save money, the Bulls surrounded their important young core with a coach that has failed to develop them.
You can't put all of your chips on players from the draft but not develop them. Outside of LaVine, everyone has regressed.
Kenny Atkinson would be a huge upgrade JUST based everything you said.

At the start of the year, I would have said Boylen definitely wasn't returning.
Now? I think there's a 40% chance he's back. Why?

I think the front office is going to bring in a new GM,
but ask that he consider keeping Boylen on staff. Just watch.

Soon as it was reported I'm like, this is too easy.
But this front office likes a coach like Boylen that appeases them.
And KC just reported that if the front office brings in a new GM,
they'd want him to consider keeping Boylen on.

So yeah.

in that it's much much much more attractive to want to coach the Nets rather than try to salvage the current carnage that is the Knicks.

In response to Reply # 0

Rumor has it that Kenny actually wanted it more than the org did. He wasnt keen anymore on coaching Durant and Kyrie. People forget Kenny played and coached overseas and was a point guard as a player. He is about ball movement, which is why the ball moves so well, and he puts the ball in spencer’s Hand.

I think he knows that the nets are better with Spencer ( based on how he coaches him) , and I think he knew , it was inevitable that the nets were going to move on sooner than later. A team just doesn’t fire a coach who is having a PO run. Also if you look at the bench during games , and watch KD and Kyrie talking to each other regarding certain plays, I think Kenny no longer wanted to be a part of that shit.

That’s how you know this dude is a good coach. It’s like you’re seeing the success that the team is having now, and how your system works with LeVert and Spencer, but knowing that has to change when two ball dominant players come back, he already knew. Plus the controversial personalities of the two stars..

Report here

“Kenny Atkinson was looking for an exit and received his wish when he and the Brooklyn Nets agreed to part ways Saturday.

According to Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill, Atkinson struggled to mesh with the team's two biggest offseason acquisitions, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Goodwill's sources said the coach "wasn't fond of coaching Durant and Irving based on what he saw this season and would rather something happen now than at the end of the season."

But KD already proved that he can play in any system
given his skill set.

Dude sacrificed a lot of shots in the warriors motion
offense and fit in seamlessly from day one
much of that was due to Steph being on of the most selfless
superstars in recent history but KDs game is waaaay more
than just 'ball dominate' dude has an offensive pkg that
allows to play any way and anywhere on the court.

Apparently Kenny saw something else.

LeVert and Harris firing indirect shots.

"I never really did," LeVert said of players tuning Atkinson out. "But we had a lot of new guys this year, so you never really know how that goes."

Harris also acknowledged the dynamic of the Nets locker room changed after signing Irving, Durant and DeAndre Jordan over the summer.

"Dealing with a young, up-and-coming team is much different than coaching superstar players," Harris said. "It's a much different dynamic."

kenny didn't seem to get it, if his wacky rotations and weird roster hierarchy were any indication. they are tryna WIN A TITLE. you need clear defined roles for that. stop tryna "make it work"

the cute lil ragtag story of some fledgling scrubs being led by an inefficient goofball who'll maybe make a couple AS team his whole career is over. It's the stuff of losers to keep tryna cyse that. but that's par for this board. some players and situations are completely acceptable, no matter how far off a title is and then other guys are expected to make the impossible happen.

and if anyone wanted facts, they could simply listen to Shams, who broke it all down, citing a recent team meeting where the players who are playing RIGHT NOW, not kyrie or KD, were frustrated by *drumroll* a lack of definitive player roles and inconsistent rotations. they had HIGH hopes for jarrett allen this year. he the same guy.

oh well, i'll just be using this for fodder next year, when the greatest agenda villain in OKS history writes another winning chapter, while y'all still not holding all these young dudes you're jockying for position to jock go remain unaccountable losers.

Kenny didn’t get it?

He left. He saw the crap brewing from players like Deandre Jordan, who is close friends
with Kyrie and Durant. And guess what? Deandre is starting now over Allen, which is nuts because Allen is the better and younger player.

The rise of levert and Spencer happened under Atkinson.

Atkinson is no joke as a coach and he knows that. So he put up a big fuck you sign and bounced. Atkinson should be somewhere like okc where he can coach and have players who want to be coached.

So Atkinson is going to be Chris Paul? Because that’s who’s coaching OKC lol

No what I’m saying he needs to be somewhere like that team, where he can coach players who want to be coach and play the game the right way. .... young players like Shai, etc. its not about about Paul, and Donovan is doing a hell of a job. Paul gets a bad rap. He played well under Doc and Dantoni the first year. It would be better than having to deal with Kyrie, Durant and Jordan.

Or a situation like Luke in Sacramento, who is doing a solid job with the young players out there.

My bulls would be perfect.

Solid write up by the score.

————————————

Right off the bat, there were signs of a disconnect on and the court. The report from ESPN's Jackie MacMullan about Irving's refusal to participate in the Nets' biometric data-gathering drills during a preseason minicamp was perhaps the canary in the coal mine; an indication that he wasn't going to buy into the This Is How We Do Things Here ethos.

As a player, Irving's individualism was always going to be at odds with Atkinson's equal-opportunity offensive principles. It quickly became clear that Irving on his own couldn't meaningfully raise Brooklyn's ceiling. A source told Goodwill that Irving "soured on Atkinson early," and the feeling seemed to be mutual. Four games into the season, with the Nets averaging about 50 fewer passes per game than they did in 2018-19, the coach responded to a question about his team's disjointed offense by saying, "We aren't really running anything."

Some players legitimately want to be coached, but it makes perfect sense that the league's cream of the crop - the guys who've already accrued individual accolades, max contracts, and championships - would be resistant to hands-on instruction in a brand-new environment. Durant and Irving are far from the only players to whom that applies. On its face, the coach-star dynamic isn't built to last, and schisms like this make you appreciate the improbability of those rare instances when it does prove sustainable.

The Gregg Popovich-Tim Duncan model is the exception, not the rule, and it feels increasingly unlikely to recur in a league in which more and more superstars are recognizing the breadth of their power and how to wield it. Even the Warriors' much-heralded culture, which was initially so enticing to Durant, couldn't accommodate him without starting to warp and fray.

There were bound to be hiccups as the Nets transitioned from being a development-oriented team to one that pandered to superstar imports. Lavishing DeAndre Jordan, a pal of Irving's and Durant's, with a well-above-market deal worth $40 million over four years signaled that the organization was now in the business of serving its highest-profile players above anyone or anything else.

On the "Lowe Post" podcast, ESPN's Zach Lowe and Kevin Arnovitz suggested that Atkinson's deployment of Jordan as a backup to promising young center Jarrett Allen (whom Atkinson spent the previous two seasons grooming) was a source of burbling tension between the old and new factions of the Nets' locker room.

That seemed to be borne out in Brooklyn's first game under interim head coach Jacque Vaughn when Jordan started over Allen for the first time in more than two months and just the fifth time all season. (The Nets were 0-4 in those games before edging out the Bulls on Sunday. For the season, they've been 2.2 points per 100 possessions better with Allen on the floor than with Jordan.)

Many will undoubtedly see this as an unsavory extension of player empowerment, and it's tempting to point the finger at Irving and Durant, particularly because they've both been portrayed as insular malcontents at their previous NBA stops. Maybe that's fair, and maybe it isn't.

For his part, it sure seems like Atkinson contributed to the conclusion that he and his two new stars were incompatible, and that the dynamic had so little hope of working out that it didn't even make sense for him to finish a season in which neither guy would play another game.

To an outside observer, it's hard to believe Atkinson could've been the driving force behind the split because, no matter the cost, it's hard to believe an NBA coach wouldn't want a crack at coaching a player like Durant - one of the greatest pure scorers of all time, and one of the league's three best players at his peak. But coaches can be every bit as stubborn and strong-willed as players. It doesn't require a feat of mental gymnastics to conceive of Atkinson being unwilling to compromise his basketball values or see his influence diluted.

If most things that happen feel inevitable in hindsight, this development feels particularly so. And it doesn't have to be anyone's fault. It's just a consequence of the shifting, divergent priorities of an organization and its employees. The Nets had to do what they had to do. Last season's team was a feel-good story, but that group had limited upward mobility and the good vibes were only going to last so long. You can't stay green forever. Everything in this league has a short shelf life, including low expectations. Look at how quickly the fruits of the 76ers' rebuild started to rot.

This is also a good reminder of the fact that pivots like this never come without casualties. Atkinson's departure officially completes the Nets' rapid transformation from a fun chemistry experiment with no established timeline to a hothouse of win-now urgency, beholden to the whims of a pair of flighty stars. That was the bargain Brooklyn made last summer - and would surely make again because players like Irving and especially Durant are the most valuable commodity in the sport.

For as long as they remain world-class players, their voices are going to reverberate louder than anyone else's. And everyone in the organization, whether they're happy about it or not, has had to make their peace with that.

but I believe it is a new owner and a totally different regime.

I think Lue would be the ideal move if things are good with him and Kyrie.

Mark Jackson is a dark horse candidate, if he doesn't take the Knicks job.

Kidd coming back... not saying it's not possible, but that exit was pretty universally frowned on. We booed him when he came back to Barclays.

It wasn't his choice, the "mutually parted ways" is just a nice way of saying "you're fired". Brooklyn is paying KD and Kyrie over $300mil for the next 4 years and they didn't want Kenny to be their coach so he was gone lol

Not true Major sources have stated that Kenny wanted out of there ASAP because of the antics of Jordan , and that he no longer wanted to work with KD and kyrie.Kenny knowing that there was going to be more friction. So instead of dealing with stuff until the end of the season, Kenny bounced.

And the fact that it happened after two great wins more than supports that. You gotta a player complaining to you about starting after coming off wins , and creating hostility, and players questioning analytics and stuff( kyrie refused to participate in a bio analytic drill).

This was more Kenny all the way after being questioned about everything.

That's basically it. Those guys didn't come in to be coached by Kenny Atkinson. This was a done deal when they signed.
