Braves is a better comparison but even if the Nationals were in the AL East, they cannot afford to make a $20 to 30 million a year mistake; Yankees and teams like Boston can.
That's where the difference lies. Being able to make a mistake of that level "go away." O's have been destroyed by the Chris Davis contract. Just look at all the players they had to let skate.

Villar wasn't hurting anyone's pockets. But they cut him because if you can't be good, the next best thing to be is cheap. Just cutting a 3-4 win player in his 3rd year of arbitration because he was going to cost something close to market rate is not Chris Davis' fault. That's an institutional decision, feels like Mike Elias is trying to be the 2011-2013 Astros on the way to being the 2017-2019 Astros.
