"'Stros management: We're pieces of shit"

Read up on this ongoing situation from the ALCS, basically during the celebration their assistant GM approached a group of female reporters--one wearing a purple DV awareness wrist band who had been vocal on the topic--and taunted them about how "fucking happy (he was) that (they) got Osuna."

Nevermind that Osuna had just blown a fucking save and barely factored into the series. Nevermind that they took a known risk acquiring him as a distressed asset and now want to pretends to be victims of incessant nagging by those who think it's not OK to beat women. Nevermind that's a problem that goes beyond their own shitty little clubhouse--Chapman himself was also in a nasty DV incident and jettisoned as a result--and nevermind that this was totally unprovoked. Oh, and nevermind that there were numerous witnesses who told the same story. They still tried to deny it and call the SI report fake news, but then later gave some really shitty apology talking about "I'm a husband and a father" (um, those are prerequisites generally to abuse someone domestically, that you have someone at home to abuse!) and "sorry if I offended anyone" even though it was patently fucking obvious you were out to rub their nose in some unspecified thing during your toxic masculinity waste spill.

If I didn't love Altuve so much I'd be rooting for the Nats now. This is a PR disaster in waiting for the Stros, too, they are handling it about as poorly as possible.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

because I can’t fathom anybody being that warped and scummy. I wanted to believe what he actually said and meant was twisted and intentionally misinterpreted.

But it doesn’t seem like that’s the case at all. Despicable, really.

Nobody here, including me (the 'Stros have been my team while the Phils have been in MLB purgatory) has an anti-Stros agenda. These are people who cover the team all the time and/or work the big national games. The Chronicle reporter just piled on to the list of witnesses. There's no gray area here. For him to single out a guy who did jack shit in the game and blurt all this out in the direction of these women and this woman in particular, nah, there is no question what his intentions were. The guy is a douche and the organization is handling it in the douchiest imaginable way. It's bad for them from a PR standpoint and a focus perspective. Punt on it, say they will investigate and discipline *after the series*. Don't make it out to seem like the press is dishonest and women are sensitive. Big-time dickhead moves here.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Between the Gurriel racist shit, making a point of getting the stadium to give Bush Sr a lengthy standing O right when he was in the midst of groping allegations, and the sanctimonious way they decided to visit the White House. But the team benefited from so many feeling post-Harvey sympathy toward the city, so it was swept aside pretty quickly.
Oh and fuck em for the “take it back” arrogant bs too. Only Altuve is keeping me from fully gulping down on a keg of haterade, I just love watching him play and do well

every club has their problem players, but the way the upper tiers of Houston management blow off everything is annoying. like the team denying a Detroit reporter from being at press conferences because Verlander didn't like him.

That trade wasn’t well received for both teams and worked out amazingly for all parties involved. Osuna was lights out and had a 0.88whip. He’s a huge reason why the get to that game and get to the WS....thats a lot to be thankful for when the initial reactions from everyone was Osuna who? Abuser who?! As far as my reaction to what happened in the clubhouse with the reporter im going to have to wait till all the info is out because theres nothing but a report that he yelled he was thankful for a trade that worked out after being criticized over. Regardless there needs to be more context for anyone to have a reasonable conclusion on it, its pretty ridiculous to make your mind up on it otherwise. Also all those journalists, cameras and mics no footage or audio?!

Laughable perspective. I'm just waiting for all info before I make a judgment....like a grown up should. Not trying to react to be "first". Btw context of the situation doesn't mean nobody believes he yelled "I'm so glad we fucking got Osuna!" I don't think anyone is denying that. Why and in what context of the situation with those 3 reporters is what I'm waiting to hear.

No need to lie to make yourself look right in this conversation about it. What HAS been confirmed is that he yelled those words and the 3 reporters were 8 feet away. What I don't understand is how theres no footage, no audio, nothing. We have all seen locker room celebrations for teams after a series. Was this the quiet corner? Such a weird but not surprising situation on all ends, from reactions, to this GM, to the reporter, to the report itself. Let's just wait this out for actual information to come out. Too much "I was there but didn't hear what happened" reporting. Only other fact is that GM is mad punchable, he looks like Kendall from Succession with a beard.

That he said it. The reporters present have confirmed the context. No one is offering any alternative interpretation as to why he would shout those things at that moment at those people. You sound like one of these Trump stooges who's like "well if it didn't happen right in front of my face, I really don't know if it happened!" What's at issue here? If he had some magical circumstance that made him something other than a prick waving a wife beater's success in a bunch of women's faces, at least one of whom had been vocal about the decision to acquire him? Really I am trying to figure out what the "other side" of this story is. But actually I'm not because there is none. I also think that it's rich that you are calling someone else obtuse on this. There's no dispute as to what was said and no explanation as to why. There was only an ad hominem attack denial and then an apology walking that back. Why would the witnesses lie here? For a beat writer to come out and confirm this, that's a big and potentially risky move. I'm not sure what's unknown and why you need a recording when several people with nothing to gain (and potentially standing to lose) have backed up the report and there hasn't been a denial as to what was said. He was "backing their player?" You seriously believe that is all there was to it or that that makes it acceptable? Wow.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It hurt them some in the previous series (obviously that bases loaded bottom of the 8th coming up empty in Game 6 almost killed them) but last night it was really weak.

If they don't get better situational hitting, they won't win the series. So far they've had enough base runners that it hasn't mattered, but this is going to be a tighter series between the pitching matchups and a couple real hot bats for DC.

Alvarez had a nice day at the dish yesterday and Gurriel looks like he's coming to life, too. I might consider moving Alvarez up and Brantley down, maybe swapping those lefties. If they get 3-4 guys out of Springer, Altuve, Bregman, Alvarez and Gurriel rolling at the same time, then they should be straight. They wasted an off-night from Scherzer last night though.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I went to 3 games in my city. Damn team scored 3 runs but they still in it.

Acting like that whole franchise doesn't still have wet champagne on their uniforms from the 2017 championship. Pulling the "been there before" card doesn't work when the baseball world still remembers watching Brad Lidge's soul exit as Albert Pujols performed an exorcism from 60'6". Getting swept by a garbage White Sox team with one good hitter in the line-up. Before the Nationals were infamous for losing close divisional series, the Astros were infamous for not being in competitive ones four out of five years. You can't pull some, "Kiss the rings" Yankees shit. Franchise wise, the Nationals haven't won shit. The Astros have avoided never winning shit exactly one time. Congratulations on the tallest little person trophy.

Still one to two games to go.

And that would be a tip of the hat. The Astros, as constructed, might be the best team in the last ~20 years. But they'll only be remembered as such if they cover that last margin. The Nationals would go down as scrappy overachievers with a lot of talent who finally got over

I get the idea of being hesitant to join angry mobs or whatever, but it's even weirder to see dudes come out of the woodwork to defend guys they've probably never heard of till that moment.

LOL again you still worried about being right or wrong. Again this couldve easily and still go down the Chris Hardwic route. Who everyone jumped on from the media to the idiots like you without anyone caring or apologizing after being proven wrong. That's why I'm not quick to believe one side just because they are the victim. That's how these cases should be handled by grpwnups who have control of their feelings LOL whether it's good news or bad news I wait for the facts in any situation where anyone is accused.

That didn't make him a sanctimonious shit bag who totally misidentified reality in every aspect of this situation?
You were asked that a bunch of times. Now you know what we all knew, the answer is none.

Also, let's be clear: This was NOTHING like the Hardwick situation, which you seem to see as some grievous injustice. It wasn't a one-sided account from the victims, it was a news report which was solid and only further solidified as *more* witnesses came forward. By the time you made your first lame ass "GOTTA HEAR BOTH SIDES" post, it was already a wrap. The organization was just desperately trying to avoid a shit storm right before the World Series. Congratulations on being the only dummy here who swallowed that tripe.

"I think like an adult." No, you think like a reactionary who deep down probably thought what he said was funny or at least acceptable.

but frankly there does not need to be. I mean what was said has been confirmed, the context is clear and it didn't need to be any worse to be actionable.

Will is also right that their handling of this made it snowball on them. Had they taken a more direct line or taken one after the series--given the appearance of sincerity and contrition, taken up more DV causes and sent the guy to counseling/appearances--maybe they could have avoided this. Once they started jumping around like three rabbits trying to fuck a football, they sealed the guy's fate. I can't say I feel sorry for him.

people aren't upset that he's happy a good player is on the team, they're upset that he loudly made this point to 3 women, one of whom is very outspoken about domestic violence, and that when called out on it the Astros lied. It's pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain that he was trying to be a dick and make these women uncomfortable.

First off it’s the WS. Why was the female reporter grilling him about domestic violence in the first place? Also like I stated you don’t think that the owner wasn’t happy about getting Osuna? If the Astros didn’t do enough research before acquiring Osuna then that is the fault entire front office. Of course the owner won’t fire himself, but the buck stops with him since he is paying salaries.

Dude... she wasn’t. She literally didn’t say anything to the guy. He saw 3 women and decided THAT was the time to loudly proclaim how much he loved the domestic abuser (on a night when the guy actually sucked). How have you missed that part of the story?

Also like I
>stated you don’t think that the owner wasn’t happy about
>getting Osuna?

Lol, they’re probably all pieces of shit and that still isn’t the point. This guy was the one loudly bragging about the domestic abuser to 3 women, apropos of nothing. Therefore he gets the boot.

If the Astros didn’t do enough research
>before acquiring Osuna then that is the fault entire front
>office.

Lmao, of course they knew what the guy did, no one is contending they didn’t. Have you read a single article about this or did you catch 5-8 words and decide to go off?

How on earth is an Asst GM the fall guy when they made the decision the acquire him collectively. Since it comes down to the response of him being %#@$! happy that they signed him. That was the sentiment of everyone in that organization, he was the only one to speak on it.

The criticism for the original move was spread across the whole team so no individual really caught a ton of heat.

We all know the GM is ultimately responsible for personnel moves but we don't know the dynamics of discussion within the team. Who was pushing for the move and why? Who was against it? We don't really know so the blame gets diluted.

But this dude gets triggered by seeing a female reporter with a domestic violence wristband in the clubhouse.... so he basically made himself the target for all that criticism that was spread across the rest of the team and front office.

In response to Reply # 91

I agree with CallItAnything above. The Astros are an incredibly good team. Just top to bottom excellent. My team didn't just win the World Series, so party however you like. But I think the appropriate narrative here is that this run was an incredible, wild ride that featured absolutely no structural luck in forcing the Nats to beat two historically excellent teams. Like, be incredible.

I never understood the point of beating a good team and then calling them overrated. Doesn't that diminish the quality of the win?

I think any Nats fan can appreciate Houston being fucking good. that lineup is stupid (where is the breather? it's like facing 3-4-5 the entire game) and their pitching can be overpowering. hell of a team.

In response to Reply # 91

The Astros did nothing to overrate themselves. They're great and the top of that lineup is the most fearful I've ever seen. "Overrated" is in response to the notion that this team was a 'dynasty' already...pumped by sports media

as for Arrogant...yea aren't they?

as for soft in big spots...didn't Hinch look like a chicken taking Greinke out? And in not going to Cole? That team had two chances to close us out at home, wiffed spectacularly both times. Part of that is baseball, but part of that seems to be a lack of conviction when they needed it most.

i'm not down for using electronics or even signalling per pitch to your other players, even if you didn't use electronics. That shit is pathetic. Now the Astros championship and those MVP's are less impressive. Fuck even Bregman's possible MVP for THIS year to me shouldnt even be considered. Give it to the man who deserves it, Trout.

Let's face it, the NCAA would have stripped their shit. Probably the main reason the MLB didn't is that they have never done it before and they don't want to tarnish the World Series as a brand. This was pretty severe. Punishment was about what I expected, a year apiece for the guys at the helm. I wasn't sure how many picks they'd lose. This is a big penalty but it could have been even bigger.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They might say they're suspended or getting fired, but there's no coming back from this. All those guys, including Cora, will be "banned" from MLB.

Since they're punishing people who don't play anymore, I'm a little surprised that they didn't bring the hammer down on Beltran, who apparently was one of the players involved.

Doing it in real time to then signal on each pitch is not. It's like poker, if you can catch tells on your own of opposing players to use it against them in real time cool, but if you are using cameras/electronics by someone to then relay those things to you thats fucked up.

watch this clip. It’s cray, yesterday I was listening to LeBatard and Billy was saying how he’d read somewhere that Altuve was said to have had a device on him they notified him of certain pitches, they kinda laughed it off, but did talk about when he hit the walk off, as he was coming to home plate he yelled to his teammates do not rip off my jersey. Later in an interview when asked about he said the last time they did it, his wife was was really upset by it.

I also suspect that this is a burner of an Astros player or official, or someone who left the organization.

The bulge and tape and all that shit, ehhhhhh, that seems shaky in terms of photo evidence.

But this shit is wild, man. If this does hit the fan, MLBPA will push back hard as fuck. But this will be a MAJOR issue in the next CBA, MLB will go hard to punish this kind of behavior in the future and make players accountable.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

he was speaking on some of the details like how the Astros actually had a name for the cheating system...Codebreaker. Also said that the way that Manfred did the report, Luhnow got the brunt, even though Hinch got canned, too. There was sort of a wink and a nod that Hinch was a bit of an innocent in this, in order to ensure he would get another managing job, at some point.

The more I think about this. The more I feel this is much ado about nothing.

Those of us in our late 30s and 40s grew up with baseball being our first love. We collected baseball cards, played little league, like every other kid. This was before basketball’s popularity influenced young black kids to move away from baseball. Before that, it was all about baseball in every community. From softball to strikeout, you had to have either a bat, glove or ball.

With that being said, baseball has always romanced with cheating since it’s birth. From taking bribes, to corked bats, to greasing the ball, to using pine tar , to filing the ball, to stealing signs. And every team has done it.

Stealing signs have always been a method in baseball, and the Astros just used a better way to do it, as well as other teams. That’s what technology does. It improves the functionality or process of a particular method or device. So of course the method in how signs are stolen are going to evolve, and everything in baseball is copied to get an advantage or be on an even playing field.

Tom House, a pitcher from the 70s stated that he was using steroids frequently in the 70s and about 6 pitchers on every staff was using steroids. So you basically had a even playing field. I look at this in the same way, where teams have video tech set up to steal signs, so the Astros sure aren’t the only ones doing it.

Stealing is stealing, so you can’t say hey it’s one thing to steal signs the old fashion way but another to use video technology. The Astros found a better way to steal signs and did it better than everyone else.

You can't really say that when Tony Larussa and the Cardinals had the same set up, and it was set up as well back in the days of Comiskey Park.

The Boston Red Sox did the same thing. They used apple watches and video replay rooms.

If I use a physical person to steal your signs, and someone else uses a form of technology, it's the same act. The first form of recording is the human brain.

So no the Astros should not be stripped for cheating BETTER than every other team. If you want to ban them from future PO appearances, then cool, to set some type of rule or understanding.

But that's about it. All this fake outrage is laughable, when the usage of PEDs is far worse,

Sorry to break it to you. Not lies my friend.

Using video technology to steal signs goes back to the 80s, and Larussa was a major user of it.

Sorry. This has always been part of the game. But continue with the outrage

The argument that because everyone has stolen signs, doing it with video makes it okay doesn't hold water.

Baseball has long tried to pass off "acceptable" versions of cheating. Like corking bat or throwing spitters is somehow more "pure" than steroids. The answer is that's always wrong.

Right...if you peel back the layers and really start getting at everyone about everything related to trying to steal signs and general cheating period, this becomes steroids part 2 (with a b-side of Pete Rose foaming at the mouth trying to renew his HOF discussion).

Baseball, to me, is and has been a full of shit sport. Occasionally, it is super righteous and on some Tom Jackson 'purity of the game' talk even to its own detriment. Other times, its a 'well, everyone is doing it so let us just try to not let it get out of hand'. The HOF process is held hostage by ayyhole voters who are clinging to whatever power they have by rigging votes, voting regionally and/or with obvious bias, and/or almost always making sure no one gets a unanimous bid.

This Astros thing seems more like a group of folks figuring out newer ways to perform some old cheating. It's scumbag tomfoolery of course and hopefully the worst of it can be stopped going forward, but I am uninterested in the outrage and/or the hope that they get stripped of the title.

I hope this doesn't build a bridge to some NFL QB showing up 3 years after playing like shit in a key game and saying 'Team X pretty much knew my audibles. When I said 'chicken little' they knew what it meant. I'm suing'. Well wait...I hope that when this happens, no one GAF and folks keep it moving.

On Cody Bellinger and Houston stealing the 2017 World Series:

"Cody didn’t have a good World Series. For him to be talking about us stealing that championship, don’t talk about it. You should not be talking about it. (He) should have done something about it. When you analyze the games, we won fair and square. We earned that championship."

On Bellinger saying Altuve stole the 2017 MVP and the league has lost respect for him:

"For him to go out there and say that he lost respect for a six-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, MVP, Gold Glover that has been doing this for so many years — and he didn’t cheat in 2017 because he got mad at whoever was banging the trash can while he was hitting — is just straight-up disrespectful."

"So, for me, when Cody talks about respect, you’ve got to respect your peers if you want to be respected."

On why Altuve protested so much against taking his shirt off after the 2019 ALCS:

"He doesn’t want me to talk about this, but I’m going to say it, is because he’s got an unfinished tattoo on his collarbone that honestly looked terrible. It was a bad tattoo, and he didn’t want nobody to see it. He didn’t want to show it at all. That was the reason."

funny, because according to Altuve...he told them not to do it because his wife got angry the last time they tore his jersey off.

Another golden moment. Got home the other day to my new Eastbay book. It has Alex Bregman on the cover. The caption reads “Always Earned, Never Given”. I probably laughed heartily, for a solid five minutes.

..While I understand that MLB refuses to strip the '17 title from the Astros, their refusal to fine AND suspend everyone involved (even if it meant an entire roster) is absolutely ridiculous.

What's crazy is that they actually have the power to do it, but simply won't. They worry about setting a "bad precedent," but that's essentially what they are creating with their inaction regarding the players involved.

Every competitive sport has issues with people working to get around the rules that govern them. Hell, most people roll with the general understanding regarding cheating:

Don't. Get. Caught.

I love baseball as a competitive sport, but MLB is an absolute joke.

draft picks from them for 2-3 years depending on what investigations end up finding how long they have been cheating for (they should re-open investigations), but they should also have the team banned from playoffs by giving them a significant amount of losses or banning them from the playoff contention regardless of their record. 2017 and 2018 have already been proven by the investigations that they were caught cheating, not sure why the narrative coming from the Astros is that they were only cheating in 2017.

but draft picks arent as valuable in baseball because most of these guys never see the major leagues. Its not uncommon for a #1 overall pick to never play in the show or to fizzle out after a season. Especially getting late picks like the Stros were/are gonna get.

Its not happening. This is baseball, not college. I’m with the commissioner. It’s over. It’s done. We move on.

Baseball has never taken titles away, and they are not going to suspend players for cheating the game in the manner that they cheated, when there are handful of teams and players who are cheating as well.

Ultimately they stole signs. That is the ultimate action, they just used a different method to steal signs. And stealing signs has always been in baseball, regardless of the method.

Time to move on.

Dude please. This is going on too long over some damn sign stealing.

Cats who took steroids to win titles, which is worse, faced nothing...roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez we’re both on steroids when they won titles for the Yankees.

Were titles stripped?

Hell no.

Go look at the history of baseball bro and stop complaining about this.

Players are pissed?

And I bet you a lot of those players are taking PEDs

Eric Gagne stated that when he was playing for the dodgers, 80 percent of the dodger players were juicing. FOH on all those cats.

So all those dodgers and whoever are complaining can shut up.

Doped up ass players pissed because another team cheated.

And Trout juiced up ass?

Man miss me with all the this.

It’s like the rattlesnake complaining to the cobra about using too much venom.

we're talking about a team who built a cheating program...so much so, that they gave it a damn name. Yes, players are pissed. Trout, Judge, Bellinger, Wood and more. You keep harping on steroids...dudes are getting banged for steroids, like PROMO said below. Talk about the shit that we know happened. When soomeone as connected as Tim Kurkijan says he''s talked to MULTIPLE players and execs and the prevailing thought is that teams have long tried to steal signs, but what the Astros did went so far beyond the pale...I will take fucking Tim Kurkijan's word over yours.

Steroids use is cheating. Cheating is cheating.

And what im saying is you got cheating ass ped players complaining about players and a team cheating, when they are cheaters themselves.

You can cheat one way but not cheat another? Stop with the hypocrisy.

You got former players chiming in who got busted for PEDs talking about the Astros cheating.

I don't follow the game. I don't watch it.

However, it's NOT going away.

Go tell the players to get over it.

Manfred fucked this up, period...and the people who do matter (players and fans) are pissed. Also, (I honestly don't remember) did they prove those guys took 'roids? I ask because even if they didn't, those players are still being punished in other ways. Also, for guys that take them now and get caught? Those guys get LOOOOOOOOOONG suspensions.

So, obviously they've done a better job punishing users. NOW, they can take this opportunity to start doing a better job of punishing cheaters.

that would come forth from players, teams, fans, businesses...everyone that has a financial stake in the postseason would have a lawsuit. And some of that still may happen.

It would also put a ton of heat on Goodell and Kraft.

Manfred calls the Championship a "hunk of metal," then has to walk it back. Because devaluing the championship in the sport where you're the commissioner, is, you know, pretty fucking stupid. He also doesn't get to decide when it time for everyone to "move on." Fans and players are pissed at the Astros organization, and if you're not going to punish the players or the ownership for their actions and their attempt to Cuban B the entire thing, then you need to just sit back, let it play out, and just pray that the season presents other intriguing story lines.

As for the Astros organization, they're continuously fucking this up. The owner's attempts to downplay the whole thing were pretty fucking pathetic. And Alltuve trying to show off his collarbone tattoo as proof of anything is just lame.

The players want people to move on? Try giving a real, actual apology. At this point, they're still reading Statements of Regret off of pieces of paper.

Since Manfred gave them immunity, then there's no reason to detail EVERYTHING they did, in public, and give a sincere apology for doing it. Then maybe players and fans might start moving on. These guys are still in denial that they did anything wrong.

he works for them, not anybody else. and no team in major US sports is getting a title revoked. the owners don't want that as a possibility for their future malfeasance.

that said.

you're right about him bungling the whole issue. every new thing he says is dumber than his last statement ("we are going to punish anybody for throwing at the same Astros players who were not punished for actually cheating").

and everyone with the Astros should take Correa's advice and shut. the. fuck. up. you get to play this season so shut your fucking lying mouths and eat shit this summer.

I'm not even sure that the players should be suspended. However, I do know that the players, the front office, and the ownership need get the entire fuck outta here with the woe is me "It's time to move on" or "When will this end?" The fans and the players are pissed, and you fuckwits brought this all on yourselves.

>you're right about him bungling the whole issue. every new

Yeah, forgot about that part. That was a bad look.

>and everyone with the Astros should take Correa's advice and
>shut. the. fuck. up. you get to play this season so shut your
>fucking lying mouths and eat shit this summer.

See, I think if they came absolutely clean, they might earn some good will. Pick a player, like Alltuve or Bregman. Have him get up there, and have them cop to EVERYTHING that happened. He doesn't even have to name all the players that were involved, just give an honest account of everything you did and how long that you did it. Say you and the entire organization is sorry, you understand why the fans and players are mad, you're aware you've tainted your legacy, and that it will never happen again. And then eat shit for the rest of 2020.

That might work. There's a reason A-Rod is still involved and baseball and guys like Clemens are still outcasts. A-Rod admitted that he used PEDs and didn't cop pleas (at least after it leaked that he failed the test that came after the initial Mitchell Report). Even if the explanation he gave was likely 200% bullshit, he didn't downplay anything.

..against the Astros?

*We all know that MLB isn't stripping that title away from Houston.

While I don't think they have the balls to do it, I often wonder what MLB would've done in response to teams simply choosing a passive protest by refusing to play against the Astros until all players involved in the cheating scandal were suspended.

He knew it was happening and made a quarter hearted attempt to stop it. He wasn't the mastermind and he didn't condone it but he didn't make any concerted effort to end it, basically just voiced his opinion.

Edit: And none of that is speculation; he admitted to it.
