"NBA executives consider LaMelo Ball a potential No. 1 pick in 2020 draft"

NBA executive reportedly considers LaMelo Ball a potential No. 1 pick in 2020 NBA draft
https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/27685250/nba-mock-draft-lamelo-ball-now-real-no-1-pick-contender

LaMelo Ball, the youngest son of controversial Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball and younger brother of discarded Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball, is garnering attention as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft, per ESPN.com.

Once committed to UCLA, LaMelo dropped out of high school as a junior in October 2017, embarking on a basketball journey that has taken the 18-year-old point guard to Lithuania, his father’s now defunct Junior Basketball Association, the SPIRE Institute, and now the National Basketball League in Australia, where he posted 19 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for Illawarra Hawks opposite the defending NBL champion Perth Wildcats in a preseason tournament on Friday.

"If he keeps this up, I don't see any way he isn't in the conversation for the No. 1 overall pick," an anonymous NBA executive said, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. "He completely changed my perception of the type of prospect he is, and all of the background info I gathered here from his coaches and teammates paint a very different story of what I thought about him off the court as well."

Givony and ESPN colleague Mike Schmitz moved Ball up more than 20 spots to third on their 2020 mock draft, citing a scout who compared LaMelo’s playmaking at 6-foot-6 to that of last year’s No. 3 overall pick, reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic — arguably the most accomplished teenager in basketball history.

ESPN ranks only University of Memphis freshman center James Wiseman and University of Georgia freshman wing Anthony Edwards ahead of Ball at this point.

There will undoubtedly be a high level of skepticism surrounding Ball, given his brother Lonzo’s own struggles to meet the hype as the No. 2 overall pick in 2017.

Then, there is LaVar, the man behind the hype (or in front of it), who has stirred controversy surrounding his sons ever since we learned of the Ball brothers. LaVar got into a Twitter spat with President Donald Trump when his eldest son LiAngelo allegedly shoplifted in China. Lonzo cut business ties with LaVar after their partner allegedly defrauded them of millions. The Lakers made several attempts to limit LaVar’s media availability before including Lonzo in their trade for Anthony Davis.

Now, there is LaMelo, who as a teenager has been tasked with rebuilding his own image halfway around the globe after a failed venture in Lithuania. According to ESPN, LaVar’s presence around Illawarra has been limited. That is a step in the right direction, but we will believe an NBA team takes LaMelo No. 1 when we see it.

I saw a few of his HS games, and dude is very talented but is dumb as a bag of rocks on the court. Laugh-out-loud shot selection, largely selfish unless he had a sweet pass to make, zero defense obviously. There’s a reason he wasn’t high on mocks for a while now.

If the Aussie experience is whipping him into shape, good for him— he def has the *talent* to be an NBA player. Discipline would take him far. But he was nowhere near Magic before the Aussie league. He plays like a taller drunk Trae Young with worse shooting percentage and assist rate.

To people like US, a record is a piece of history. A moment in time.
Most people don't get it.

there's already been enough clips showing he sees the game better thsn he was playing it in AAU

if he's gotten bigger and stronger and is willing to distribute, then yeah he's that good, just calling him magic johnson is ridiculous still

As I said above, he's always had the talent to make for one hell of a mixtape. But having seen him play in person and having watched a few more of his games on TV, the entireties of his game have always been very different than his mixtapes. I felt the same about Bol Bol (though Bol is a more singular talent than Ball, obviously).

So while I agree his clips look nice from Australia, I'm just hesitant to get on board until I see a full game or two that he's played, because it's always those in between highlights that have given me serious pause.

i never said he's magic. i never said he's GONNA be magic. he might go on to be a total bust and the laughing stock of basketball.

i said his game REMINDS me of magic because of his size, his level of athleticism (which is good but not ELITE...much like magic), his willingness to pass, his shot (while it looks like it's falling fairly well people still question it), his ability to rebound with his size, his ability to make the simple pass look flashy while still having the ability to actually make flashy passes.

that's it.

He need to sit his 2k20 archetype ass down somewhere. His 70 rated finishing, 73 rated midrange and 3 point shot, and poor defense deserves late first round selection at best.

Lavar's strategy worked but he messed up by dissing that coach which caused his middle son to get blackballed.

Finishing plays on both sides of the court. The REAL extra pass in the half court instead of the 37 foot three point attempt.

Hes getting drafted to be a 6'8 Curry who can shoot over smaller guards and get to the bucket

He'll be a better defender than tre young, dame and curry based off his length and quick hands alone

very surprising when almost everyone seems to be shooting similar now,
2 Ball brothers have one of a kind jump shots.

I miss the old days when not everyone had a shot coach at a young age and guys made it to the league shooting it the same way that felt comfortable for them growing up in the park.

Good thing he's 6'7 and still growing because if he was 6'2 or 6'3 he wouldn't be able to get that shot up in the league.

He's gonna be an interesting player in the NBA.
He can shoot it, can pass, his body is maturing, he's putting on mass.
Can go coast to coast. Has good vision. If he gets to the league and is a willing passer, willing to listen to his coaches, and wants to win games by making the game easier on his teammates...

I think he'll be able to succeed.

He's got the attributes to be a solid player. Magic lulz.

From all accounts in Australia, his mentality and composure are very similar to Lonzo as well which already puts him ahead of most young players.
