Granted, I think Tyrone's more excited to be playing on the Villa Park pitch in the top flight.

I think this will be a better gauge of where Villa are; I expect them to try to dominate the ball, rather than catching the opposition on the break.

Upsides were we got a beauty of a goal from Douglas Luiz, but that was after he inexplicably dummied a ball right outside the area to free up Harry Wilson. And the team got into plenty of dangerous positions; just need to finish those chances.

It just adds a layer of decision-making that completely denatures the sport IMO

With that said the game was really excellent and fwiw Spurs kinda deserved that point. Lucas really clutch once he came in (even besides the goal) and lovely to see how fast Ndombele is adapting

In response to Reply # 17

In particular, midfield.

The front 3 should obviously be Auba, lacazette & Pepe for Spurs at home, and IMO @ Anfield too.

Personally, I wish we coulda 'trialed' playing both ozil & ceballos in midfield prior to liverpool & tottenham, just to see if it could actually work before pulling it out for a big game.

For the record I'd like to see a 4-3-3 for both games, with the front 3 listed above along w/ a midfield of ozil, ceballos and torreira, & a back 4 of maitland-niles, sokratis, sideshow bob & nacho.

Emery likely will go 3-5-2 nxt weekend w/ either Ozil or Ceballos out to start, along with Monreal/Chambers as the 3rd CB & Kolasinac in.

That's not reasonable.

So long as I don't see Mustafi or Xhaka for either match, I'm good with it.

He was a great filling Mesut’s #10 role but I don’t know enough about him to say how he’ll fit as a potential double pivot. Does he have the necessary work rate and discipline to fill the gaps alongside Torreira and be content as the defense to offense link rather than pushing up? I don’t know but we’re gonna find out and I’d much rather find out early now through these couple stress tests.

chelsea is missing something up the middle. kante's going to fall over dead before the end of this season. Mount's helping though. Jorginho is still nothing in the middle.

i dont understand how Abraham gets run over Batshuayi. the kid is awful.

james maddison is great. we should buy him next summer.

in the middle.

>chelsea is missing something up the middle.

and mount is not helping in that area. at least not yet.

they should be starting with Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic (or Barkley) for stability.

Which is hard, because Villa hung 9 goals on them in three meetings. I think comparatively, Lampard relies on the Center Forward to be a bit more isolated- Villa very frequently in attack would have five players across the front with the fullbacks or central midfielders pushing up (even this year, John McGinn has played much of both games almost as a second striker).

In Smith's Villa, Tammy was great. He pushed ahead on the press, generally provided a good funnel for the ball, and got himself into dangerous positions pretty easily. He's not a clinical finisher, but that point is mooted by the fact that he earned himself a ton of chances.

that he seems to have set up his midfield in two blocks (a two and a three), and yet they leave so much space between the forwardmost midfielder and backline.

what a crazy weekend. First loss at Bilbao in 60 years, Aduriz with the sick goal. Pique already mad at Semedo. Midfield looked like they'd never played together (they basically hadn't) and the attack was bad.

It either gets figured out quick, Messi covers up everything once he's back, or Valverde's out before Christmas.

On the good side of things: Xavi's squad is balling (next coach please), Victor Valdes is coaching Juvenil A (ansu is a prospect and a half. So is Ilaix), and Kluivert and Abidal seem to have consolidated power a bit away from the terrible management squad who had been in power. Which reminds me that the next gen of barca looks like #blackbarca--abidal and kluivert in power, Wague/Semedo at RB, Todibo at CB and Firpo at LB, Dembele, and Iliaix and Ansu Fati best two youth prospects right now, probably. I dig it. And if MatS weren't so good, I'd be begging to bring Onana back at GK.

The Neuer-esque header against Spurs, the penno against Bournemouth. I just hope his one wander today is to just punt a ball into the top of the Doug.

The real indicators are if a) Anwar El Ghazi gets going. He was an integral part of us making that run to the playoffs last year, but he's been very quiet the first two matches, b) if Trezeguet and/or Wesley can grab a goal. Trezzy's had a few good chances that he only hasn't scored because he pulled the trigger too late. Wesley unfairly needs to get the monkey off of his back and grab a goal. Do that and he can become a hero on the Holte. c) Douglas continues his growth from Saturday. Ill-advised dummy aside, he played quite well against Bournemouth and that strike was a worldie. I wonder if, assuming Conor Hourihane is on the bench, Douglas starts taking free kicks.

but he had a special preseason. I think Smith wanted to go to the most experienced fullbacks, and then play the relationships on the wings (i.e. El Ghazi worked well with Taylor last year, and Elmo and Trezzy have experience together from the Egypt national team). Guilbert is rougher product right now, but man have he and Jota started to spark.

I get it. But Tierney is still weeks away and Nacho had actually looked good and can play multiple positions. Sead I just don't trust.

If he leaves and either one of mustafi or elneny is still around that will be sad. Not for lack of trying I'm sure, but I think this move will cost us points

The gameplan was to give Liverpool the flanks, take away the space of their front 3, and get chances on the counter. It worked quite well as Liverpool couldn’t create anything of substance while we had two great chances to tilt the game...you have to take at least one of those, especially Pepe (who will be brilliant btw, loved what I saw from him today. Very balanced skillset combined with pure pace).

Even after the Matip corner, we still had a chance because you can still play within your shell and gameplan. The Luiz penalty changed all that and it was game over at that moment. Once you have to open up your formation vs Liverpool, the game is essentially over.

Look, I get the game plan, and certainly if we'd have finished one of those counters in the 1st half it could have been a different game.

But their fullbacks killed us today with their crossing and overlaps. I'll admit it's a pick your poison scenario with 'pool (and city)

I still think 3 CBs, with Monreal on the right & Kolasinac & Maitland-Niles as wing backs, woulda held up better. I bet if we'd had a fit Bellerin and Tierney (and Holding), that's precisely how we'd have set up.

By the way I don't understand what Ceballos was being asked to do in that diamond. It didn't look like he did either.

At least Willock showed out, and I thought Guendouzi was decent. And yeah, Pepe for sure

They created no chances off those opportunities. I’ve already seen the script when you try and play with three at the back because you will get exposed by their front three with how quickly Liverpool breaks from defense to offense, the wingbacks can’t get back and then you have 3v3’s vs Mane, Salah, and Firmino. That’s a recipe for disaster.

The issue today was our link between taking possession and getting it out to Auba and Pepe. Xhaka, Guendouzi, and Ceballos were not decisive at all and vs an elite press, that’s a death knell.

arseblog agrees with me, gunnerblog with you FWIW.

To be honest, after listening to it and re-watching the 1st half, I do see your point,

That said, we're lucky Robertson didn't connect with firmino a couple of min into the game.

After that, the game plan worked until finally conceding the corner at the end of the half

It’s going to be a tough game regardless but it’s about picking your poison...and you’re far less vulnerable letting them beat you than letting Mane, Salah, and Firmino play and interchange in space

Luiz is actually a great CB when placed in the right formation and personnel, which requires being behind a strong Defensive Mid ( kante, matic, mikel, essien) . If he is allowed to be a sweeper CB in the box, where he can just intercept balls, win headers, and be a creator from deep with his wonderful passing, he will shine. That is how it was under Conte and Ancelotti.

However, if he plays in a highline, and is behind someone like Jorginho, he will get destroyed. He is terrible in 1 v 1 situations in transition, and he is not fast with tracking back. It will be a disaster. He is offensive minded, which is why he makes a lot of mistakes.

He is loved by offensive coaches, because he is superior on the ball and with moving forward, as well as his pinpoint passes from deep. So those coaches realize that he will make defensive mistakes, but that his offensive ability will outweigh his defensive errors.

Defensive or really strategic coaches like Mourinho, etc ,hate him, and don't want him anywhere near their team, and rightfully so.

I just hate the fact that he is now considered an enemy at Chelsea, and he didnt get a legendary send off. Dude started at chelsea in 2011, and was part of some historical moments. A lot of our legends leave on extremely bad terms, just like our coaches. Quite annoying. alex, anelka, malouda, mata, costa, cahill, luiz, etc....just terrible endings.

And we needed that with all the injuries to our attack right now. Carles Perez also had a good game and first goal as a first team player, and Ansu Fati, one of the jewels of La Masia got his first taste of A-squad ball at 16! Our youngest player in 78 years. Hopefully he continues to improve and get called up because he looked really promising. And Rafinha played really well although he scuffed a few great chances in front of goal.

In response to Reply # 0

It's been a minute, so I thought to put up a post, and will put a few posts up here and there throughout the season.

Chelsea- There is definitely an uprising of youth due to the transfer ban. Tammy has great movement and instincts as a striker, just needs to have the end product, which is starting to come about. He is the first english striker to come out of the academy since the 70s. Pleased with that, but we still need depth, because Giroud isn't going to get younger, and Mitchy is a poacher who doesn't offer anything else.

Mount - solid, definitely has a sense for scoring and is a natural CAM, but does not track back to play defense.

Pulisic - He is good on the ball, and is great with making runs and doing 1-2s. But does not offer anything on defense and is easily pushed off the ball. I imagine he will get stronger. He has to. Maybe that is why Sancho was more of go to in germany.

Winger position - we are pretty much in a good place; Hudson, Pulisic, Pedro,Willian. And We are stacked in the midfield with mount, barkley,RLC, kovacic, kante, jorginho. Frank just needs to get the selections and formations right. 4-3-3 appears to be the best fit with kovacic - jorginho - kante in the middle ( with mount on the wing, but still the creator).

CB and FB are concerning: Zouma has poor spacing and is clumsy off and on the ball. AC does not have the strength or speed to deal with strong ,fast forwards. Tomori is the future and is really great on the ball, but young. Rudiger is our only solid CB, but he even has issues with marking. Emerson has emerged as one of the best LBs in the league, but with rumors of ALonso about to be sold, we have no cover. AZP days are numbered, too many games on his body, and Reese isn't ready yet. Zappa was loaned to Roma ( why? I don't know). If Kenedy isn't going to back up the position, reese is still not ready, why loan out your cover?

Maybe we finish top 6, which would be an over achievement , but so far we appear to be a top 10 team

----------

Real Madrid - It's time for the old guard to be sold, and considering Zidane wasn't interested in Kovacic or Ceballos for the season, who are both good on the ball and can play CAM ( which RM desperately needs), you have to wonder if he will make it past this season. For Isco and Vasquez to still be on this team is a joke. Modric has aged considerably, marcelo is still terrible defensively, and the majority of the players are still selfish in play. Hopefully, hazard can bring some team-play to the squad. He worked really well with marcelo and benzema during preseason, and I actually think the team plays better in a 4-5-1 or 3-5-2. Vini is overrated as hell and is already a huge party goer, can't wait to get Rodygo back. And Hakimi out on loan? another joke by Zidane, because Danny has been terrible...If the selection and formation are right, REal can still make some noise, if Zindane continues to not get it right, it's going to be painful.

Premier League is sitting pretty with the best league and teams in the world, while other teams in other leagues rebuild and get rid of their old players ( barca, real, bayern, etc). It was quite the opposite a few years ago.

Man, I know MU was supposed to get him, but the deal didn't go through. I think they felt the tag was too high. Dude is a gamer in my eyes, and is part of Portugal's new golden generation.

Now, with this alleged buy, it probably would have been cheaper to keep Ceballos. They are similar in style and play, but Bruno is 1 year older and is more experienced. He is just hitting his prime at 24.

But this could set up Madrid nicely in the next 2 years. The team could be something insane

Hazard- Jovic - Rodrygo

Ceballos - Casimero - Bruno

Mendy - Militao - Varane - Hakimi

or
----------- Jovic --------

Hazard Bruno ( CAM) Rodrygo

--Ceballos -----Casimero

Mendy - Militao - Varane - Hakimi

That's a serious squad right there, with 2 midfielders who are willing to trackback.

However, the English will probably blame that goal on de gea

Lets get one more goal and make some subs.

We could possibly get top 4 this if we keep playing this.

And Frank Lampard going overboard with the youth. What the hell was the purpose of bringing Gilmore and Bats on? You take Tammy off, Barkley off, and Kovacic off?

They were the ones creating the building up play and winning balls.

And mount and pulisic were freaking terrible, and both should have been off. Mount it to Frank as Jorginho was to Sarri. He just refuse to sub him.

Azp needs rest, clearly, and has regressed. Play Kenedy at RB, and Zouma is terrible on the ball and in tight defensive situations.

Impressive: Tammy, Tomori ( our best ball playing centerback)
Good: Barkley, Kovacic, Emerson, Jorginho
Bad: Pulisic, Mount, AZP, Zouma. Gilmore, bats

But this loss is on Frank.

I wouldn't say sorry, just inexperienced. I like what both are doing offensively and strategically. When Ole won those 8 straight games, those were lucky games with no real build up. But now MU is playing with good strategy and build up, good chances, but lacking that experience to close the show.

Same thing with Chelsea, but Chelsea to me is a lot better offensively, and we have the players, but just bad decisions by frank. We have been in every game that we played in except the MU game.. Played better than liver pool in the supercup, bad second half against LC, held on against the yellow birds, and a bad second half due to stupid subs by Lamps.

But I like where both teams are going. and we are still without Kante, Rudiger, Loftus Cheek and Hudson Odi. Once we are in full squad mode, and frank makes better decision, we will be okay.

Is years. Not wisdom, not composure, not guile. Just years. Such a low IQ player.

Matteo was fantastic today. Dani want great when he came in in terms of some costly turnovers but was really positive in his intent.

Papa played a pretty mustafi game in the first half.

In response to Reply # 99

If you can’t win the ball back immediately and have poor decision-makers (Xhaka, Luiz) in the spine of the team, you’re at huge risk when you push up. Liverpool would have put 6-7 on us.

Play Militao, and I’m not a fan of starting 2 strikers together. Madrid needs
Playmakers to get service to the box. Should have started Vinny with Bale on the right..Lucas V is never the answer.

I know there are injuries, but Zinidine can do better than this.

In response to Reply # 103

Casemiro is now more focused on attacking, and has forgotten that he is a DM. No cover in the back for Courtois after he made a brilliant save.
Bale still has class, but if the defense does not get sorted out, they are going to continue to be trash.

Zinidine showing it was all Ronaldo, and not his coaching. Dude need to get this right as soon as possible.

106. "Key players with minimal composure compromises the entire plan"
In response to Reply # 0

Luiz and Xhaka have consistently shown their risk/reward calculation is completely skewed toward risk and each reared their ugly head yet again today for both goals. If the plan is to play Luiz with Xhaka in a deeper mid role, you simply cannot play an open game because that requires composed, astute decision making from the spine of the team (see: Liverpool).

Those two were exacerbated by Sokratis who looked like he didn’t trust anyone defensively and was trying to win everything himself rather than pass attackers off, communicate, and allow his teammates to do their defensive role.

The attack going forward is massive with this front 3 and Guendouzi was fantastic (clear Motm) but there’s a clear disconnect between 1/3’s of the field and playing PEA or Laga wide wastes key strengths. You can tuck a true #10 behind them to help sort that out or have Pepe drop off (like Firmino does) to give those two more space to operate. Regardless, the midfield needs to be Torreira and Guendouzi as the double pivot with Ceballos/Willock/Ozil in front.

Great fight back today but the type of goals given away - basic, egregious judgement mistakes - is getting really frustrating.

In response to Reply # 0

the bad: too many midfielders, Semedo looks poor at RB and the defense is porous
the ugly: suarez, messi + dembele all injured at once. oof.

fortunately, not too many points behind and they should be back. gonna need to offload at least one midfielder in the winter. no way to keep all of them happy w/ play time and get into a rhythm as a team. wish Valverde would just play the obvious trio (busquets-arthur-de jong) and KIM. rakitic as first one in for rest, vidal to disrupt a game, roberto rotating at RB (key: ROTATING) and alena for attacking. and then in the winter, sell rakitic and/or vidal.

but alena's gonna get wasted this season. and wague should have gotten spot starts and now won't. oh well.

got subbed off at halftime and s. roberto moved to RB and stabilized the position. Semedo could not handle getting pressed and when he did move forward, his positioning was off. shockingly bad half.

115. "How can anyone support Inter or Cagliari at this point?"
In response to Reply # 0

I often wonder why players of color choose to play in Spain or Italy. Yes, money is a huge aspect of it, but to subject one's self to blatant racism is beyond my understanding.

The racist chants that Lukaku had to endure while playing against Cagliari at their home stadium was not only disturbing and inhumane, but the Ultra fans of Inter Milan not only supported the action, but even stated that the action is simply the culture of Italy, and that it isn't going to stop.

Their explanation is that it isn't a true racist act, but more of a fake or pretend racist act to disturb or interrupt the playing ability of the player who is being targeted. They also claim the racism in Italy is different than racism in other countries or in America, meaning it is not harmful or as harmful.

That is purely insane. Any form of racism is unacceptable. And the so called fanatic fan bases of both teams could easily use other non-racist chants and actions to agitate the opponent.

I often question my support of Chelsea at times, because of the feral, racist acts that some chelsea supporters have exhibited towards chelsea players, as well as against players of other teams while visiting other stadiums, cities and countries. However, the organization of Chelsea will (and have) expel fans who perform racist acts from attending games, and they verbally denounce racist actions across all media platforms. They always do it with great immediacy, so I continue to show my support for the club.

And don't get me wrong, I know the EPL is not absent of racist issues. EPl Fans have verbally abused players as well, but those fans are usually penalized immediately, and clubs submit thorough investigations ASAP. But usually is just a few fans, and not a 1/4 of a stadium or section of fans spewing racist chants that commonly happen Italy and Spain.

Demba Ba urges all black players to leave Serie A immediately. It's going to be interesting to see how black players in the league respond to what Ba stated.
