"Boxing gonna be on fire for the rest of 2019"
Thu Aug-08-19 05:08 AM by Boogie Stimuli

These are some of the standout fights for me. Feel free to talk about any of them or bring up some fights you're excited about.

Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua rematch in Nov or Dec
(First fight was upset of the year so far)

J-Rock vs Hurd rematch Dec 14th
(First fight was fight of the year so far imo. Hurd refuses to fight anyone not enrolled in VADA 90 days prior to the fight and recently asked Hurd what's up with him waiting so long. Hopefully Hurd takes care of that.)

Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter Sept 28th
(Finally happening)

Sergey Kovalev vs Anthony Yarde Aug 24th
(Just about everyone is saying Yarde may not be ready for this challenge. He's a tough young dude but very green in the ring. He didn't even have many amateur fights. He's convinced himself that he's gonna KO Kovalev in The Krusher's home country tho.)

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Luke Campbell Aug 24th
(In the UK. Admittedly, I never miss a Loma fight.)

Regis Prograis vs Josh Taylor Oct 5th
(World Boxing Super Series tournament finale at 140. The winner will be a unified champion and will hopefully face the only other unified champion in the weight class, Jose Ramirez, for undisputed.)

Naoya Inoue vs Nonito Donaire Nov 7th
(World Boxing Super Series tournament finale at 118)

Claressa Shields vs Ivana Habazin Oct 5th
(Shields is dropping down to 154 to challenge a reigning champion in a 3rd weight class. Should she pull it off, she'll be the fastest boxer to ever become a 3-division champion, male or female. It'll only be her 10th professional fight.)

Heather Hardy vs Amanda Serrano Sept 13th
(Serrano is a 7-division champion, but all but 1 of those titles were vacant. Hardy is the smaller fighter here, which may influence the outcome. This fight will be at 126. Serrano's last fight was at 118, but her fight right before that was at 140. No idea how she's fluctuating in weight like that without PED's, unless...)

Devin Haney vs Zaur Abdullaev Sept 13th
(I never miss a Haney fight either. What's good about this fight, is that it will supposedly place him in contention for a title shot. He's on a collision course with Lomachenko should Loma stay at 135. That's a dream fight.)

Artur Beterbiev vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk - being finalized now
(If you don't know these two guys, get to know them. This has classic fight written all over it. Two light heavyweights (175) who can punch and box. Gvozdyk may have the boxing advantage and have Teddy Atlas in his corner as trainer, but Beterbiev will beat the dogshit out of just about anybody if he can touch them.)

Dewayne Beamon vs Juan Franciso Estrada Aug 24th
(Beamon is come-forward fighting prospect who's only lost one bout which he immediately avenged. Estrada has the title that he won from the very skilled Wangek. Estrada has only lost to top opposition, so this is Beamon's chance to prove himself as such.)

I was at the first fight. I was already high on JRock but he was coming off two lackluster fights against Ishe Smith and the kid from Chicago. He was clearly the better boxer against Gallimore but appeared to fade late in the fight which made it closer than it needed to be. This is why I slightly favored Hurd. He is massive for 154 and we have seen him come on strong in the second half of fights against elite competition. JRock put on arguably the best performance of his career. It was a decisive victory. Just as strong late as he was early. I expect Hurd to come with a different game plan. I still think JRock is a better fighter but it will be interesting to see what kind of adjustments Hurd can make. I think people want to make it FOTY because it was considered an upset. But in reality, the fight was pretty one sided.

I expect Prograis to wash anybody at 140. He is going to have to come to 147 pretty soon. I would mind seeing a guy like Mikey Garcia give him a shot at 140 before he moves. Could be a great fight.

He definitely will. He fired his old trainer and even cut his hair off lol. It sure will be interesting to see what he can pick up in a few months.

>I think people
>want to make it FOTY because it was considered an upset. But
>in reality, the fight was pretty one sided.

I think it's both fight of the year and performance of the year so far. FOTY because as great of a performance as Julian put on, Hurd was still a tough customer, and dominating that fight was still a lot of work for him due to Hurd's size. Hurd remained a threat throughout. I often agree that domination isn't necessarily a "good fight" but this one is an exception imo. *shrugs*

>I expect Prograis to wash anybody at 140.

I actually think Jose Ramirez gives Prograis and really good fight... a 50/50 fight even. Josh Taylor should give him a good one as well although I do favor Regis to pull it off. Hopefully that fight doesn't fall through, as Regis and Dibella filed a lawsuit against the WBSS for lack of payment. They're in contact and trying to work it out tho.

>I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like

It would.

Hearn had a press conference in Saudi Arabia about the fight. I mean I watched it live! No fighters were present. A Saudi Arabian representative was saying they're gonna build a special venue and whatnot.
Then Ruiz comes out and says he ain't going to no damn Saudi Arabia because he "has no protection over there." Hearn out here tryna set shit up without talking to the fighters first is just sloppy af.
I posted it here after that press conference, because I figured he wouldn't be doing all that if it wasn't in stone. Smh. Until Ruiz says it's official, I'ma leave that one alone lol.

he stuck to his gameplan, had Loma frustrated and even hurt him a couple times. there were several moments where he could've folded under the pressure but he survived and came back composed at the start of the next round.

I think it was round 4 when I said Campbell would be outta answers by the 7th, after which there may have been one round I considered close. I could see that Loma was breaking him down, but he connected cleanly on Loma far more frequently than I thought he would, and those body shots did visibly slow Loma down a couple of times. Loma's skill and mental fortitude overcame tho. Props to Loma already being too small for 135 but dropping everyone he's fought at the weight. He continues to push fighters back with mental pressure. Gotta be impressed by that.

In response to Reply # 0

Vacates his WBA belt at 130.
Loma said he wanted to become undisputed at 135 then move back down to 130 where he's more comfortable and possibly organize a fight with Davis. Loma has repeatedly said he's too small for 135 and he's correct. Davis ducked Loma once, but with this latest move, I can't tell if he's chasing Loma or ducking him. I guess time will tell.

In response to Reply # 21

I was certain Tank would go for Farmer's belt first. I felt like Farmer would be a relatively easy W for him. Speaking strictly in terms of weight class, I think that move favors Davis more than it does Loma, but we'll see how it plays out. If that fight doesn't happen in 2020, I could see Loma going back down regardless

Well he and his team actually tried to make the Farmer fight about a week ago. Farmer's contract was up, so he could fight anywhere without being beholden to a network. Team Tank offered him 2 million, and he turned it down, stating that he knows his worth, then immediately re-upped his contract.

Loma is an interesting case to me. He's too small for 135, but he's good enough to still beat guys in the fashion that he does. I'm thinking he wants to hurry up and get that IBF belt off the winner of Lopez vs Commey so he can move back down without having anymore of these intense challenges at 135. One thing that indicates that for me is Arum saying Shakur Stevenson (a 126-lber with Top Rank) is a "more competitive fight" than Devin Haney (135-lber with DAZN whose fight on Sept. 13th will make him the mandatory for one of Loma's belts). It's like they're already setting the table for getting the hell outta 135 ASAP without facing anymore real ones.
To your point tho, Loma did call Tank out like crazy before he himself moved up to 135. It was like he saw something in Tank that he felt he could exploit, so it'll be interesting to see if he still wants that particular fight at 135.

IIRC, that would've been his largest purse to date but maybe there's some context I'm missing

This is true. Stevenson is a little more "green" (in the pro ranks at least) too, so would be smart on their part if that's the route they take. I think he runs through either Commey or Lopez relatively easy, so hopefully that goes down early 2020 at least

In response to Reply # 0

It's looking like it'll be on Oct. 26th, but I'll update if that changes. Mind you, that's the same date as Prograis vs Taylor. What a time to be a boxing fan.

Two TOP prospects who haven't gotten their title shots yet will be facing off for the WBO title. This is going to be a LOT of skill in the ring. Stevenson's mentor is Andre Ward. Gonzalez is trained by Robert Garcia. Both show championship level skill. Guys have moved up in weight and flat out refused to fight Stevenson. Regardless of who wins this fight, I believe they'll both be champions at some point.

Word. It's been a good year, and the next two years could be even bigger with rumors that Haymon and Arum are in talks to make Crawford/Spence, Lomachenko/Davis, and of course Wilder/Fury 2.

J-Rock likely fighting Erislandy Lara instead on the same date (Dec 14th).

Hurd initially exercised the immediate rematch clause but has decided not to go through with it. He's reportedly considering moving up to middleweight as well.
Almost everyone was saying he shouldn't go straight into the rematch, especially with a new trainer (fired his old one after the loss). Guess he ultimately agreed.

33. "Hardy vs Serrano one-sided as expected. Haney looks sharp af."
In response to Reply # 0

So Heather Hardy vs Amanda Serrano.
Serrano is a 7-division champion (she's making history) but 6 of her belts were vacant. She faced the undefeated Heather Hardy last night at 126 and beat her up for a full 10 rd fight, almost KO'ing her in the 1st. My prediction was that Serrano would win and that it wouldn't be competitive due to Serrano being naturally bigger, having better form, punching way harder and Hardy just not being... that good, frankly, despite being undefeated. Now, supposedly this fight sets up the winner for a shot at Katie Taylor at 135, which I thought was silly before the fight, especially since Hardy's career has been from 118 to 126 and this fight was at 126. People are saying the Serrano vs Taylor fight needs to happen based on this victory, but I think Taylor beats Serrano, because Taylor had the most problems with Delfine Persoon who was a relentless puncher for a full fight (I thought Persoon won), but Serrano was relentless in rd 1 with Hardy. After she didn't stop her, she calmed down and boxed more relaxed. Hardy throws arm punches and has terrible balance, so Serrano outboxed her with relative ease. Serrano won't stop Taylor early, and she won't outbox her. I got Taylor winning that fight if it happens.

Devin Haney vs Zaur Abdullaev.
Haney's jab is incredible. I've gotta say it might be the best in boxing right now... so quick and powerful. The doctor stopped this one after the 4th. Abdullaev came away with a broken left orbital bone and his nose was fucked up. Haney won the interim WBC belt which makes him Lomachenko's mandatory. He even referred to Loma as "NOmachenko" in his post-fight interview because Loma allegedly doesn't wanna fight him. I see a couple of things that Loma could exploit with Haney in his defense. He also does offense like Floyd in that he doesn't probe to set up shots, just kinda waits on his opponent so he can counter. Never the less, it would be a really good fight.

Agreed re: Haney. In regards to him fighting Loma, although he would have the size advantage, I could still see Loma picking him apart ... he's still too green IMO

Interesting. What was it in the the interview that gave Hardy away? Body language? Lack of confidence? I didn't even watch any of the interviews leading up to the fight, but she did say on twitter that she knew going into the fight that Serrano was the better fighter.

There's this clip that was floating around recently of her talking about how her pay never reflecting the amount of tickets she was personally responsible for selling, because boxing didn't appreciate women... to the point that she crossed over to MMA (and famously took a beating). One can only imagine how much better she'd be at boxing if she was properly paid and focused on it solely. Reportedly, both her and Serrano, who also does MMA, got paid very well for this fight (relatively speaking). That was definitely a selling point for her in taking this fight, so when you say she was just happy to be getting the fight, I'm sure she was. I guess at some point it's not even about the title anymore and she's gotta feed her daughter and get paid what she's worth.
Anyway, here's the clip:

Hate that it's been that way for her. Just read a little bit of her story and didn't know that she didn't get into boxing until age 28. Up until this fight she was sleeping on her own coach cause she couldn't afford a bed. I'm happy that she got this payday

35. "Canelo pushed for this fight... which means he sees weakness"
In response to Reply # 34

And it's same weakness everyone has seen in Kovalev since he fought Ward... that he doesn't take body shots well. Canelo has moved up in weight once before to cherry-pick an opponent who he stopped in the 2nd round with.... body shots (Rocky Fielding). He's been calling out ONLY Kovalev at 175 and none of the other champions like Gvozdyk, Beterbiev or Bivol, none of whom he'd beat and he knows it. Keep in mind that he sees weakness in Kovalev to the point that he'd jump 2 weight classes to fight him instead of fighting Demetrius Andrade in his own weight class. Just one of the many reasons Canelo isn't an elite fighter imo.

Some are calling this Kovalev's swan song, getting a final big payday that he truly deserves before leaving the sport as an aging fighters who's slowing down. I mean he almost got KO'd less than a month ago by Anthony Yarde who's one of the greenest fighters in boxing, now he turns fight around and fights Canelo? It could truly be a swan song.

With that said, Kovalev can really box. He outboxed Ward for long stretches of their first fight. It takes a great boxer to do that. Even tho he's older, he's still dangerous.

I'd say this is a 60-40 fight for Canelo. Not only do you have to KO him to get a draw, but Kovalev is older and soft to the body. Canelo should win, but I don't think it'll be super easy for him. Kovalev can box and will have a big reach advantage. I see Canelo getting low to avoid shots and attacking the body... he might even win by KO. With Kovalev's skill and pedigree, I'm not super confident in this pick, but I just think it's the most logical.

DLH: cool so hey Sergey do you want 10 mil (or whatever the purse will be) to take body shots from Canelo and retire?

Kovalev: ok

aka Canelo will become a 4* division champ

Rocky Fielding really don't count but the game is the game

In response to Reply # 0

Otto Wallin.
It was actually pretty fascinating, because Fury fights with this herky jerky style of feinting and flinching that seems to confuse and discombobulate everyone he fights. This guy figured out Fury's timing tho, and was slipping those 'random' shots and countering very regularly from rds 1-5. I've never seen that. He had it down so well that I wonder if he studied it in camp or figured it out spontaneously. He caught Fury with a punch that opened up a nasty cut over his right eye and Fury bled profusely most of the fight. That seemed to be the worst thing to happen to Wallin's game plan, because he just started pawing at Fury's cut after that and stopped landing all the great shots to the body and head. Then he gasses and Fury pretty much wins rds 6-11. Wallin should've KO'd him in the 12th. The punches were there, and if he was more accurate with more stamina, he'd have at least dropped Fury. It's like he just couldn't pull the trigger or doesn't know how to finish a guy. It was odd. That guy wasn't supposed to give Fury those kinds of problems.
