"OKPW: G1 thru SummerSlam"
Mon Jun-17-19 07:41 AM by Oak27

This year's G1 starts on July 6 in Dallas, then continues back in Japan the week after.

G1 Blocks:

A Block:

Kazuchika Okada
Zack Sabre Jr.
Hiroshi Tanahashi
Kota Ibushi
EVIL
SANADA
Bad Luck Fale
Lance Archer
Will Ospreay
KENTA

B Block:

Tetsuya Naito
Tomohiro Ishii
Juice Robinson
Toru Yano
Hirooki Goto
Jay White
Jeff Cobb
Shingo Takagi
Taichi
Jon Moxley

Who do you got winning each block and going on to face the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at Wrestle Kingdom 14?

--------

AEW Fyter Fest is streaming for free on June 29th:

Cody v. Darby Allin
Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks vs. Lucha Brothers and TBA
Jon Moxley v. Joey Janela
Hangman Page vs. Jimmy Havoc vs. Jungle Boy vs. MJF

--------

And don't forgect, WWE Stomping Grounds is LIVE on the WWE Network this weekend featuring fresh new match-ups like:

Seth Rollins v. Baron Corbin
Kofi Kingston v. Dolph Ziggler
Roman Reigns v. Drew McIntyre
Becky Lynch v. Lacey Evans
Bayley v. Alexa Bliss

--------

Other noteworthy summer happenings:

AEW Fight for the Fallen - Jul. 13
WWE Extreme Rules - Jul. 14
NXT Takeover: Toronto - Aug. 10
WWE SummerSlam - Aug. 11
NJPW G1 Finals - Aug. 12
NXT UK Takeover: Cardiff - Aug. 31
AEW All Out - Aug. 31

--------

And tomorrow, June 18, we get Tony Khan on The Steve Austin Show, so there should be a lot of clips the media will salivate at, I'm sure.

it felt weird. like i was getting out of a toxic relationship lol. i'll miss nxt tho, they're like the pets that you give back to the ex in the divorce.

the njpw on demand service is cheaper. streaming experience sucks and there's no app but jesus the product itself is so refreshing.

The G1 is one of the things I look forward to the most each year when it comes to Wrestling. I watch every single card and when I'm off on the weekends I make it a point to get up early in the AM to watch them live.

If you want to enhance your experience I suggest using this extension if you use google chrome to watch.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/njpwext/kdelcebcdheimimhenmhndnbefbkbien

Amazon has a NJPW app if you're using the fire stick or fire tv.

I normally use the edge browser on my xbox to watch on the tv, there are several other ways to do this as well.

Also this is a good list of some matches with direct links to view them. These are highly recommended matches starting all the way back to the 70s up to the end of 2018

In response to Reply # 0

But I have no idea who's winning A block.

I'd like to see a Natio win at Wrestle Kingdom for the title. A block is so stacked with major players I honestly have no clue who could take it, and its awesome that way because I'm sure I'll be on the edge of my seat.

That Stomping Grounds card looks horrible.

6. "Winner usually comes from the block opposite the champion"
In response to Reply # 4

That way they don't have their WK main event already done in the G1. Obviously that's assuming the current champion is still champion come WK, but that is usually the case, and if you look at the recent history, this theory is pretty consistent.

With that said, Naito looks to be the favorite coming out the B block and I'd imagine Ibushi comes out the A block, with Naito going over Ibushi in the finals, but please guys DON'T DIE.

The last 2 days' main events are:
Kazuchika Okada vs. Kota Ibushi
Tetsuya Naito vs. Jay White

Those are obviously matches that will decide the winner of each block.

I'm wondering who beats Okada to earn a title shot between the G1 and WK. I'm thinking Ospreay.

This will be my first NJPW show and (since Moxley won't be there) my first time seeing any of the guys on the card. And what a card:

I travel around the country for a lot of wrestling and I can honestly say nothing has touched NJPW when it comes to in ring work.

You get to see Tanahashi vs Okada live. That's a fucking experience right there!

Hope you enjoy it. Gonna make it hard to be pleased by another live wrestling show after this.

More importantly, they are a VERY new couple to be going all in on. I wouldn't acknowledge any relationship on screen for at least a year. These things usually end in disaster... although they could be banking on that now that I think about it.

>Maybe 1997.

Too many people are convinced that the late 90s boom was soooooooo amazing compared to anything before or since. They aren't wrong about the ratings and how ridiculously over the most over folks are. They ARE wrong about assuming that making it like its 1998 is a fix-all.

The biggest improvement I expect is on the undercard. WWE has no business having a bad/boring undercard. They have entirely too many good wrestlers. The challenge is the same tho: once someone gets over with improved booking in the midcard, how do you mix that person into the main event scene without hot-shotting everything?

Bischoff is much better as an on screen character, and outside of the nWo (which he eventually ran into the ground) never had much of a creative bone.

Regardless, they are still both going to be reporting to Vince so who knows if this even makes a difference. It may just means more creative ideas go to his desk to die.

It's good to see WWE recognizing the changes that need to be made are behind the curtain though. We'll see where this gets them.

Obviously this one has the hype of the first show and all, and you gotta imagine they are saving something big for their TV debut, so the real test is how they do over the course of the first few months. Can't imagine they'll be doing big arenas like that weekly, but I think they can sell out 2.5-3k seaters confidently on a weekly basis.

What a fucking tournament! Ibushi-Ospreay is my favorite match so far but there are multiple matches I'd put in the 4.5-5 star range. Ibushi beating Tanahashi followed by Sanada beating Okada the other day was incredible. Obviously this isn't happening anymore, but Okada is such a boss I wouldn't have minded if he just swept everybody.

Yano is endlessly entertaining. I died when Red Shoes asked him about the roll of tape in his pants and he said he didn't know how it got there. Moxley's face when Yano beat him was priceless. Then they followed it up with Yano actually squaring up with Ishii and looking like a badass. Awesome.

The G1 man...WWE should've stolen the format years ago. It would force them to book at least more things 'together' than they have a habit of doing. And it ain't like they don't have a badass roster to get the rasslin part right. And it would let folks like Cesaro get wins against real folks without having to give him a title.

I'm so outrageously done with Ziggler that I can't even pretend to be interested in his stuff. He's clearly on the scene to lose to everyone and then go away again. Now he's doing a 'hey, we let you take off all the time, right? Isn't that great!? Okaaaay, so we need someone to make Goldberg look good at Summerfest. C'mon down sir'.

If they want this to count for anything, Dolph needs to show some brains and pull the rug out from under Goldberg.

I'm zzz's on Dolph now and don't see how this makes a lick of sense.

But they have a shot to make this worthwhile if they go left, find a way to give Dolph a bit of savvy that gives Bill the L without killing the mystique, and they could actually get some decent mileage out of this.

I think they need to be a little more judicious with the use of that high pitch screech thing too.

and got damn i'm physically exhausted from watching so much good wrestling.

i've only watched njpw in matches and one live event. meaning, i never really followed storylines. it's so crazy how they really make sure everything matters. even the opener tag matches all build up to the next days' tourney matches.

ishii's ankle which was such a small thing on the first day, gets added to the storyline of the main event match weeks later. such good storytelling that you don't need crazy matches every night, yet every G1 show had at least two awesome matches.

i dunno what lies after G1, but I'm really looking forward to it.

Little things like Ishii's ankle play out through the whole tourney and have such a great payoff. Just the fact that every person has their own narrative is amazing (the new guy trying to prove he belongs, the old guy trying to prove he still has it, the guy trying to improve on last year's showing, etc.). That's not easy with 20 competitors.

I don't really watch the tag matches just cause I don't have the time, but whenever I catch a glimpse or hear the announcers reference the preview match in a tourney match it's pretty clear they are well thought-out and play into the overall story.

I honestly hate to harp on "NJPW is great and WWE sucks!" but like, how can I not? WWE always looks like they're stumbling through the dark week-to-week and New Japan probably has the next 2 years planned out. People were worried that AEW was gonna gut NJPW, but they are still looking strong.

I will say I was disappointed that KENTA joined Bullet Club though. Outside of the Switchblade and Gedo pairing I don't give a fuck about Bullet Club. The whole thing is just dead and I don't want KENTA to become just another BC dude after having such a hot start.

For starters, NXT is still going to be on the network the next night, so if I'm picking which to watch live, I'm probably going to watch the one I can't see a night later.

Also they are just going to hurt NXT, doubling the show length and going live takes away from the entire feel of the show and reminder that it's a training grounds.

This is going to end bad for NXT and they're going to get killed in the ratings and look stupid which Vince will blame them for.

In response to Reply # 47

thats why RAW is on 30 day delay on the network

so unless you have cable (and a platform to stream USA to your TV) or Hulu thats not gonna work.

unless theyve negotiated a revised replay deal of course, but USA's deals with cable providers and Hulu are worth a LOT more than their deal with WWE

If you haven't seen any of the Takeovers, you should basically go back and watch all 20-something of them. The pleasure will be notable. It'll also make you wonder what in the bluest of blue hells happened with a few folks, but still...you'll enjoy the rasslin and the storytelling. It's very strong. And the cards are usually about 5 matches long, so things get time to cook.

Last week, a tag team gets thrown together for the first time, gets a title shot, and wins the belts.

This week, a second pair of guys that never tagged together run through the entire tag division and gets a title ahot at a PPV.

So.....WWE just ahit on the entire tag sivision for this match.

Am I seeing this corrextly, or am I missing somethimg?

Yes, there are some drawbacks and they have their limitations.

But they're a quality act.

WWE creative is stilted and hackneyed anyways, and they make poor creative use of significantly greater talents anyways.

E&C at least have a credible, watchable act with built-in storylines on the reup.

In response to Reply # 0

I barely watch the weekly show, since there's just too much wrestling, and I tend to check out the NXT proper and 205 Live weekly shows if I'm on the network. But I put this on to see Cesaro and the few UK people I'm somewhat familiar with, like Toni Storm and Walter.

Really fun show. The Cesaro match was cool, as was the women's title match. The tag team triple threat was great, and the Walter/Tyler Black match was outstanding. Feel pretty comfortable saying that'll be one of the best WWE matches of the year when the year is finally up.

I wouldn't mind some of the NXT UK people getting some more shine on NXT once it expands to two hours. I'd like to see Pete Dunn stick around there, too. Love that dude.

Watched my first NXT tonight. A couple ofcomments...

1. The action was definitely better. Even better...very little talking (besides the announce team). Is this mormal or was it a set-up?

2.Except for the opening with Hunter no McMahan presence. Thank you.

3. The announcers...must thete be three in the booth for this? For me 2 is plenty.

4. I love that the old ROH gang is holding all the belts.

They basically need to plan matches around the fact that he can't get down to the mat and back up again too many times without wearing himself out. He had zero energy, terrible body language and just stood there.

of Rhodes.

It was like when WCW would go off the air right when NWO and Sting started fighting. Must be a TNT thing.

Enjoyed the show overall though.

The only thing I didn't like was the Rose v Riho match. A lot of botches in that match and it ended up making me switch to NXT's Women's Title match. Other than that, I agree that Dynamite was awesome.

Some of these guys are near finished products - Cody, Jericho of course, Bucks, LAX...all are great and ready for primetime TV.
(That WWE never nabbed the Bucks and Briscoes is confounding)

Sammy Guevara, SCU...way too cookie cutter indie. Of course they can wrestle, but who are the characters? Not enough character intrigue and lousy on mic. Need to refine their presentations.
(SCU in particular feels like 'rasslin', like Jeff Jarrett style promos. Do not like)

Women's match got by on crowd enthusiasm. Sloppy from start to end, but deserved the big pop at the finish because of how legitimately surprising it was. Slow down.

Cody/Sammy was MOTY for me. That Cody Rhodes has evolved into one of the most can't-miss guys in wrestling is surreal. But the way he was presented at the show open, and the way he doesn't waste ANY movement in the ring is proof that he's a top tier player.

Which brings me to Kenny Omega...we all know he's the most obvious superstar on the team. He looks the part. But does he want the part? Since the launch of AEW, Kenny Omega has suffered in my opinion. Stop telling me how special he is, stop leveraging my knowledge of his resume. Build a mystique around him. Stop pairing him with his friends, even though it's clear that's what he feels like doing. I need to believe he's a unique badass, because he is one. Even though it's early, I don't sense there's a plot for Kenny Omega. If they're going to compete with NXT (and WWE), if they're going to be a true alternative, if they're going to tour arenas, Kenny Omega is their meal ticket to long-term consistent success. They need to put him on a pedestal the way WWE did Cena and Reigns.

In the live setting it's hard to figure out who is and isn't actually over. This crowd is weird in that they pop huge for everyone. I'd advise the decision makers at AEW to not take advantage of the enthusiasm of the audience - just because they're rabid for an alternative doesn't mean you shouldn't still have plans for guys.

I thought the end of the show was masterfully executed - here's our good guys, here's our bad guys, here we go.

To think that we have AEW and NXT on, for just two hours, every Wednesday is so exciting.

They're coming back to the area for their next PPV, Nov 9 in Baltimore. Bad beat that I'm out of town that weekend, because I'd be there with bells on.

He's arguably the best in the world, and he's on a big slump now where he can't pull it off. They kinda did the same with Okada in NJPW where he's lost his title then lost what made him special. I'm hoping they move him slowly back into his "The Cleaner" persona.

He'll get his redemption arc soon and Kenny will best since these wins and loses matter. Once he starts his climb back to the top by scoring some important wins you'll see what makes him special. Sort of like what happens in the G1 every year only this will be spread out over time. Once he gets desperate and goes nuts in matches for those wins then you'll see him on his road to that AEW title. I can't wait until he gets it.

Thought I missed a “No DQ” announcement or something.

Overall I enjoyed the show though and am rooting hard for it to succeed. I won’t expect perfection, just don’t bore me to death like WWE usually does.

If this results in turning NXT into a commercial for everything but smaller dudes working their asses off, I’m gonna be unpleased. For now, I’ll patiently watch and enjoy stuff as is. This is a big set of changes. Smackdown looks like the main show now. Fine by me. The draft will be fun.

I think it's more important to have a quality mainstream competitor to WEE, than it is to have a quality WWE subsidiary.

It's not that I want to see Vince ruin a good thing by seeding NXT with all his worst proclivities, but I definitely want a legit competitor to succeed.

Wrestling, IMO, will be better overall if AEW gains real, sustained traction, even if it costs us NXT.

It was a forgone conclusion. And when Cole said "It's been a miracle run for Kofi..." before the match started, that confirmed it. I was even cool with a squash, but THAT kind of squash? That was highly disrespectful and undid all the great booking they've done with Kofi since Mania. Basically rendered his whole run meaningless

Love the studio wrestling setup with the commentary and interview desks, the match quality was solid, even if the ring is a schoche too loud. The lead play-by-play guy is a little Howdy-Doody looking and blandly shouty, but Corny on commentary does a good job selling the match. Eddie Kingston probably had the promo of the night mocking Bram to set up a tag title match. Aldis/Tim Storm was a good match, though the last 5 minutes were kinda iffy. They Chekov's Gunned Kamille, had her staring up at Storm like she was going to do something, had Aldis accidentally plant her with a clothesline, and then it didn't affect the match at all.

I got to see Swerve a few times live around the northwest before he signed to WWE and became a big fan. So I'm excited it seems like he's getting some pretty big-time matches kind of quickly here. He and Roddy put on a real fun match. Kushida and Walter killed it. I'm pumped for Rhea Ripley to start running through the women's division, too. Her and Baszler should be great, and I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but Ripley-Charlotte would be wonderful.

Still haven't decided which Wednesday show to watch first. I guess it'll probably depend on who's announced for each night right now, but after how they did Kofi and all these boxing/MMA dudes I don't care about showing up, I think I'm getting close to only paying attention to the two Wednesday shows.

The opening tag match between the Bucks and Private Party followed by the Jericho/Inner Circle promo, and the main event followed by clusterfuck, overbooked melee was the perfect way to lock a viewer in at the start and leave him wanting more at the end.

I almost fell off my couch when they announced Private Party was billed at "24 ounces of vodka cran."

I'll admit I've been sleeping on the Young Bucks because I couldn't stand them when they were in TNA. But that tag match last night with them made me a fan and the right team won (you know who would've won that match if it was in the WWE) and Jericho's line when the fans were shouting "We The People" was brilliant and brutal, and the subtle shot at Brock was perfect too. MJF turning face was unexpected, but I'm sure he'll be back heel on down the line.

I really like him. Honestly my only gripe with AEW right now is their women's division. Even the match last night didn't do anything for me. Maybe once Kong has a bigger role in it, it will start to catch my attention more. But as of now overall AEW has my full attention.

It also is bringing up a complaint I have with AEW thus far (though it's still early) in that they are trying to attract the "lapsed fan" and casual viewers but they are treating the entire audience like they are the smart marks who have been following BTE and all these guys YouTube channels for the last few years.

The MJF situation is that he's been buttering up Cody and Cody think he's the most amazing guy, but as soon as Cody leaves the room he goes back to being the biggest asshole on the planet. Everybody else sees it, but Cody doesn't. That being said, he is constantly coming to Cody's rescue and backing him up when needed (being his corner man at All Out for example), so he is a face when it comes to matters that deal with Cody and a heel otherwise.

They are eventually leading to MJF turning on Cody I imagine, and they teased it at All Out and last night.

Here's some context from BTE:

...yet he's perhaps the best comedy character we've seen since....Mizdow? And Santino before him.

The kid is gold.

It took me a minute to come around. But he's fantastic, and speaks to AEW embracing the "entertainment" part of Vince's insufferably heavy handed corporate branding, without the heavy handed corporate branding.

I love that we've yet to see Jurassic Express on Dynamite, because the crowds so far love the hell out of them. Which means they'll get a massive pop when they show up.

Jericho is a fucking god. He's hitting on all cylinders right now. There were so many people cracking about how hisntitle win was proof that AEW was no different, just some old guy hogging the spotlight.

Meanwhile and he just made 4 guys into serious players, with one promo. That shit looked like an odd assortment, but Jericho came through and glued them in onto a cohesive, complimentary unit. He rehabbed many perceptions of Hager, put over Guevara as a young stud, and framed Santana and Ortiz as badasses.

How it plays out is anyone's guess, but that shit did NOT feel like a fluke. A seasoned pro got a live mic and put on a clinic.

Has Brock ever done that? I know, apples to automobiles comparison there, but even accounting for the strengths of each... does Brock have the ability to put so many guys over in one shot like that?

They've done a fine job of utilizing their vets and established names to present these younger/lesser known guys as stars.

Darby Allen, despite having a name that sounds like the latest in a long line of shitty NXT monikers, came through on a goddamned skateboard like some SNK fighting game character just tagged in. What a beautiful, wonderful mess that whole thing was. Cody showing up like the son of Rugal.

We got smaller alliances in the midst of the full fledged factions. Layered storytelling. Baby faces helping babyfaces. We got fantastic tag wrestling. We got a big time, top shelf presentation. A couple of obvious breakout stars, right on the cusp.

On a two hour show.

There some issues to be sure. But those issues appear to be easy fixes.

AEW is the real deal. It feels good to be excited for pro wrestling again.this next year is about to be dope.

He shitted on WWE creative, made the fans side with the guy they never cared about in over half a decade of WWE programming, and told the fans to shut the fuck up in a way that further got them on his side in real life and made him seem like a heel that was annoyed by these smarks all at the same time. So perfect.

I was ready to go to war with you on Orange Cassidy lol! When I saw the interaction between him and Dreamer I thought it was a one time gimmick, but I noticed that the fans were popping like crazy so I had to see what this guy was all about. Much like my rabbit hole of MJF videos I got hooked on Cassidy and haven't looked back.

Everything you said is on point, especially about Hager (I can't even refer to him as Swagger anymore. After Jericho buried all of that you can't do nothing but respect it) and Jericho. I don't know how long this will last, but AEW has a damn good formula right now and its definitely a damn good alternative to WWE. I'm gonna check out the NWA show this Tuesday and see how that is.

and while i wasnt disgusted, i found my reactions more on the side of "wow his opponent is a moron".

edit: i meant to add here that they cant tell that story *every* time bc that will turn him into a jabroni and bring all his opponents down for being involved with it.

also not seeing the ricky morton comparison (i assume you meant ricky). ricky morton's selling used to make people cry in the audience because they were worried about him. i dont see any emotional investment in someone whose "thing" is a complete lack of interest. like, if hes that apathetic why even drive to the venue, get changed, and go out there?

i dont think he's gonna be for me, and im looking forward to him wrestling someone who takes "protecting the business" wayyyyy too seriously.

Yeah, I meant Ricky Morton. What I saw there was a crowd that was 50-50, because we're in the post-carny world and indie audiences show up to cheer their favorites, that got turned all Orange by the end (and yes, Beyond is his backyard). I thought his strikes looked pretty damn good, and the outside cradle as a finisher is *chef's kiss* for him.

And yes, it was a little indulgent in the "heel looking to make a STATEMENT, not just get the win." His match with Jordynne Grace from the same promotion is a little better in that regard.

Point was, he's more than the 5 minutes of TV time he's gotten on AEW, though I think they may have fucked up by debuting him the way they did.

also hope we stop seeing the expanded group in 6 man tags. Marko Stunt was better on AEW Dark than he was at All Out but its a no for me dawg. i get the Little Spike Dudley thing, but i dont see the violence inflicted on him in 1999 playing well on TNT in 2019. i also dont see Marko Stunt coming out of it alive either, so theres that as well lol

Well, this is interesting. Wonder what this means for the Ring of Honor relationship.

https://www.njpw1972.com/63157

Also last week their parent company Bushiroad announced that they were buying World Wonder Ring Stardom.

Not that they were necessarily trying to do so but I was hoping that AEW would replace ROH in that partnership. Seems a little less likely now but who knows.

I've basically given up watching wrestling on TV- there's too much and having a 7 month old doesn't help- but I follow along enough and am excited to just feel the different juice an AEW crowd has vs a Raw crowd.

I went to their very first show in DC and the atmosphere is a lot more hype than in the recent WWE shows I've been to. They don't have nearly as much downtime due to no 20 minute boring promos. I was legit tired after the show and thought it was well worth my time and money. Even faked sick the next day to get out of work to recover lol. There are a lot more matches than what is broadcast on tv that night, and the dark matches get filmed and shown on AEW Dark on Youtube. You'll have a blast, the crowd gets soooo into it.

Going to the next PPV they have and I'm glad they decided to go with Saturday PPV's so I can recover on Sunday.

Typically, he is what I like in wrestlers...bigger guy, no nonsense, no pandering to the crowd, ruthless aggression...I should love him...

He does zero for me. Nothing.

Help me out...I want to like him, but...

vs. Gargano, vs. Dream, vs. Almas (another dude that has been wasted by Kreative) were all FIRE. Shit, my man even made Lars Sullivan work a classic (even with the whiffed Black Mass): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9n6CpZG-qs

But in NXT he had that "it" factor, maybe it's not translating just like Nakamura?

His entrance was great, his moveset was great, the ridiculously stiff kicks, it was just kind of reminicent of a better era of wrestling.

Maybe all that is not being showcased on TV?

like Stardust near the end of his run, and getting like 5 minutes to work on Raw.

OH and just like Ricochet, they added a fucking idiotic sound effect to his entrance. Because you can't watch dude rise up off of the ground without a creaking coffin lid.

and that was fine when they debuted as a new tag team that shouldn't work but did, but then they reboot them as singles guys again and all they had for Black is "do some cryptic promos and barely ever wrestle." They've at least played to Ricochet's strengths for the most part and let his wrestling get him over, but for a character like Black you have to have a clear plan or it'll just turn into nothing.

Oh, how I wish I could watch AEW Dynamite and NXT live on different nights.

I have less interest in the "main roster" than at any point since I got back into wrestling a few years ago.

What a concept, you let people speak honestly with a basic outline and they give you gold (also, please note, Bruce Prichard and Paul Heyman (and Vince) how good the women’s tag division can be if you cut Reenactments of Porn I Watched This Week in half)

I hate pretty much everything about The Fiend except for the new entrance music. The lantern is...okay...but I hate the striped pants; the mask; the overuse of no-selling; the mandible claw being pretty much the only addition to Bray's typical move set; the screeching sound effect when he attacks; etc.

Love the Firefly Fun House though.

I really think they should have brought him along more slowly and have him work his way through the old Wyatt Family members and all the people he lost feuds to over the years (instead of Finn being the only one). And none of that would have required him to be cartoonishly overpowered; he just didn't need to lose which somehow he has also already managed to do.
