Not quite sub 10, but more impressive.
Also a 44.x split in the 4x400 relay.

I hope he isn't just peaking early and that he can still progress.

I hate that the focus is on his whiteness and not the fact that he is a generational athlete

That time is crazy for me. My homeboy ran a 10.5 and that shit seemed damn near unfathomable.

Mechanically, he reminds me of Michael Johnson...it will be interesting to see if he can lower his times going into the next Olympic trials.

It's just the fastest time run during a REGULAR track & field season, meaning there have been high-schoolers that run faster during state/national meets along some in global meets as members of Team USA.

For perspective, you have to be 18 or under to compete as a junior & dude is almost 19. He is the all-time list for juniors *this is only US athletes, doesn't include sprinter factories like Jamaica**:

https://drive.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=http://www.usatf.org/usatf/files/24/2459bb49-08c8-4794-aef7-e3c500b4d53b.pdf

At the same age (~19 years), Trayvon Bromell ran a windy 9.77 (+4.2m) and a legal 9.97 (+1.8m) and almost legal 9.92 (+2.2m), before running a legal 9.84 in 2015, which is the current world best for this age. There was much less international hype with these efforts, only because he was attending university at that time and not high school.

Boling future as a top athlete is more in the decathlon than a sprinting specialist.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

On one hand, he's highjumped 6'7" and actually tried pole vault this year (13'0") but on the other, he could be the greatest decathlete in history and still not be worth as much to a coach who wants to compete for conference/NCAA titles as a guy who can run 10.low and 45.xx then come back for relays.

The polevault thing seems like it's a hint though. Why try it otherwise?

If he's committed to being an armature then he will probably be pushed to specialize in the sprint events but if he wants to make the 2020 Olympic team then better off in the decathlon. Nike is probably going to push him that way if he wants to turn pro & cash-in.

It's not guaranteed that he will improve his PR by a substantial margin to medal in the sprints (all-time high-school list is littered with them) but his current times would already earn him max point for the decathlon in the 100/400 dash.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

The Lyles brothers. McLaughlin. It wasn't out of highschool, but Trayvon Bromell is an anti-cautionary tale now: at least he managed to get paid before falling apart. Hell, even some American distance runners are going pro out of highschool like Drew Hunter and Josh Hoey.

I think he's got more in the tank at 400m, but with 2020 coming up then that's points in favor of your prediction. I would have said that Americans don't care enough about track to get behind a decathlete, but I bet Ashton Eaton managed to bank some real money before he retired.

Just for the sake of arguing, I say he goes to college, focuses on the 400m and tries to capitalize on this buzz with a spot in the 4x400m relay pool for the Olympics. But when you're right, I'll be sure to tip my hat to you.

But I'm having a hard time believing the second
Dude is fast for sure, but I haven't been able to find times on him from previous years easily
Which is weird, people definitely improve, but this is such a level of improvement that it strains credibility

Here's the finals from last year.
Unless he was injured or transferred from out of state you're telling me that dude went from not being able to make the finals the year before to all time times in a year

Milesplit says he didn't race the 100m last season. He did run 21.20 in the 200m and 46.15 in the 400m, plus longjumped 24-2, which is tough (though not impossible) to do without elite 100m speed.

I guess I just don't think you're ever going to find signs from previous seasons that a highschool athlete is going to run 10.13. The age-group heroes like Tyrese Cooper who get, like 10% better every year starting in 7th grade are the exception, not the rule.

you see kids make big improvements after transferring schools/states, focusing on track over other sports, working with various coaches/trainers (school and national), adding/dropping other events, improving form, puberty, etc.

and just the slightest physical changes (like adding muscle or getting taller) in those years can affect getting off the blocks, accelerating, speed maintenance, etc.

His time doesn't make him a "generational" athlete as someone stated in this poAst.

For example, Kiryu was 17 when he ran 10.01 (wind-legal) to match the junior record in '13.....his PB now is 9.98. Basically, junior time isn't a good predictor for track & field athletes.

Had he run the same time at anywhere outside of a REGULAR SEASON track meet then this wouldn't be news, the cats ahead of him were actually YOUNGER.

As far as the decathlon, his body has to hold up first b/c being fast twitch is going to hurt him as the events add up through the rounds.
