give Beasley a Hakim Warrick and he wins a title.

28 double doubles. 26 point average.

Melo 22 and carried by Warrick isn't as impressive to me.

are you still drinking expired 7'11 hot coffee with fly shit mildew stuck on the cup?

People finally realized how stupid they were being with those awards after Melo led his team to a title. Melo opened that door for KD and AD.

Melo averaged 27, 12, and 4 in the final four. His team leaned heavier on him in winning that chip.

AD has been an amazing pro player. But that was
one of the best recruiting classes ever.

But he wasn't even better than Michael Beasley in
collage. Fine, fine player, though.

Carmelo a good bit better.

Then I counter with the last freshman to do everything Melo did... PLUS MORE.

Now it's time to talk about teammates, recruiting classes, and players that didn't win a National Title?

Keep them goalposts moving bro.

It's still AD though.

Better.

Most dominant.

Most accomplished.

Whatever you want to call it.

He's it.

Melo was cool though.

We were winning anyway.

38-2 or some shit like that.

We would've beaten UNC... AGAIN.

And beat Syracuse by a clean 15-20.

They would’ve been a strong contender to win the tournament with Melo.

AD had one of the all time great freshman seasons, and is one of the best players in the league.

I think Melo has the small edge though because he had to carry his team to a greater degree.

The “awards” are less relevant because Melo is the one who killed all that stone age political “freshmen have to wait” shit for good.

We beat y'all by a clean 15-20.

Melo broke through by not winning any of those awards? Lol.

I mean if we want to play what ifs, I could easily say we were the #1 seed in the tourney when Syracuse snuck in a Title, but Keith Bogans injured his ankle vs Wisconsin.

So there's that.

After Melo led Cuse to the title, people stopped being stupid about avoiding giving the awards to freshmen.

Cuse was really good in 2012. 6 NBA players(same as Kentucky), went 17-1 in the Big East. Cuse’s zone with Melo in the middle was a force.

Maybe 17-1 is doable most years in the often scrubby SEC, but doing it in that era of the Big East wasn’t the norm for anybody.

In response to Reply # 18

>We would've beaten UNC... AGAIN.

Don't act like it's a given that Kentucky would have beaten a healthy UNC on a neutral court.

Kendall Marshall may not have been a good NBA player, but he was the best point guard in the country that season. And John Henson wasn't 100% either.

All that said, injuries happen and I give UK full credit.
---

AD is not #1 of all time. He was a beast, but that team was stacked. They had 5 guys scoring in double figures and he was only the leading scorer by half a point.

My vote still goes to Magic. Then probably Kenny Anderson or Michael Beasley.

I put AD in the next tier with Durant, Carmelo and Trae Young.

To be clear, I have no beefs with UK's title because injuries happen. Part of the game.

I'm just saying let's not act like it's a given they would have won. They were both great teams that year. I would have loved to see the rematch.

It's funny you bring up the previous season - because UNC beat UK in the regular season yet UK beat UNC in the NCAA tournament...

Very interesting.

>Beat them earlier in the year.

By one point at home. Not a very strong argument.

>Would have beaten them again.

Maybe. I think a healthy UNC would have beaten that UK team on a neutral court, but we'll never know.

UNC beat UK early in the season.

UK got better and beat them.

UNC brings the same exact team back minus Zeller. Beat them at home with a better team than the year before.

They would’ve beaten them again.

You think all of sudden Kendall Marshall was gonna make a difference against a better squad?

No he was garbage.

>UNC beat UK early in the season.

>UK got better and beat them.

And it's just an ABSURD notion to flip that around and say the same thing would have happened for UNC in the subsequent season?

I guess only UK players get better over the course of the season, or even from year to year?

>UNC brings the same exact team back minus Zeller. Beat them at
>home with a better team than the year before.

Actually both UNC teams (2010-2011 and 2011-2012) had Zeller.

UNC was significantly better in 2011-2012 then they were in 2010-2011, because of player improvement. That's not something that only happens at UK.

UNC 2010-2011 beat UK by 2 points at UNC, lost by 7 in the NCAAT.

UNC 2011-2012 lost to UK by 1 point at UK. They never got to play in the NCAAT because injuries derailed our season.

There's an obvious parallel that you're clearly ignoring.

>They would’ve beaten them again.
>
>You think all of sudden Kendall Marshall was gonna make a
>difference against a better squad?

UNC was better than they were the previous year. So was UK. The two teams were EVENLY MATCHED. That's why it was only a 1-point win when they actually played. Again, at UK.

>No he was garbage.

Objectively untrue. He was the best point guard in the country, and averaged 9.8 APG - that's practically the definition of difference-maker.

Some freshmen make the jump between year 1 and 2, some make the jump later... Not everyone improves at the same rate.

Kendall Marshall, for example, was much better as a sophomore than a freshman.

But it's really not worth arguing with you anymore.

If you're not willing to concede that Kentucky MIGHT have lost to a UNC team that they only beat by 1 at home then there's no point even debating.

Yea, that line really dwarfs Melo's 20 pts on 3/5 threes and 7/16 overall combined with 10 rebounds and 7 assists in 37 minutes of a 40 minute game that Syracuse won by 3 points with Gerry McNamara (a great college player but no NBA prospect) as its second leading scorer.

Kansas shot 33% inside the 3-point arc, which is insane.

People at the time tried to use the 1-10 to dismiss what kind of a pro he'd be. He did a 6/16/5/3/6 line, and people who watched the game saw what a monumental impact he had on the floor. He won MOP for a reason.

I wouldn't necessarily argue AD is the best freshman ever-- I don't really know who I'd pick, hence me staying out of this post for the most part-- but I don't think that 1-10 shooting night is itself a disqualifier when he was UK's most important player on the court by a healthy margin in that game.

And the Most Outstanding Player on a championship team. (And the National Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman to boot.)

So I don't think anyone arguing that Melo was better in AD in college should go the route of trying to reduce or shit on what AD accomplished. AD was tremendous, and I think attempting to reduce how tremendous he was is counter-productive in your pro-Melo arguments imo. I think the pro-Melo camp can easily make their argument *without* shitting on AD at all.

Won a ring, came within one game of another. He was all-NBA five times to Melo's six despite starting his NBA career at 26 when Melo started at 19. Melo has zero awards (MVP, DPOY, etc), while Wallace has a fistful of DPOY awards. Prime for prime, anyone who wanted to win would take Wallace even though longevity and college performance will get Melo into the HOVG, er, HOF, while Wallace will have to rely on a player X player Y comparison with Mutombo (which Wallace wins) to possibly get in. But if we're just looking at their best, give me Wallace, easily, he carried defenses in ways that Melo never carried offenses.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Might be why they won more than any of Melo’s teams.

Also LOL @cysing like Rip and Chauncey as blanket "all-stars," as if them first ballot hall of very good dudes were like Magic and Mike. FOH. Yes, Wallace was the key to the good Pistons teams and even before they got Sheed he was the engine that drove them. Before the LB hire they'd won about as many playoff series as Melo did in his whole career.

Chauncey made 5, Sheed made 4, and Rip made 3 in the 00s. They were all stars. All in their mid-late 20s.

I don’t care if they made the AS team in the exact same year that Detroit won it or whatever.

They were all all star level players throughout most of the 00s.

let's face it they are making a post about the 2003 NCAA tournament to redeem his disappointing career. that tells you all you need to know.

also it hasn't even been mentioned that the pistons passed on melo for a guy who did *nothing* for them and ended up going to like seven straight ECFs, winning a chip, etc. they didn't exactly miss him dearly.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

subjects because you came tripping to get in here to shit on Melo, like always.

Such a disappointing hall of fame level career, lol.

Detroit had a great run. Probably would’ve been even greater with Melo.

and in the summer of 2004 no one thought of them as all stars. summer of 2005, same story. if flip hadnt cranked up the tempo in 05-06, they never would have been allstars.

thats just a fact

also, please note that i dont care about the comparison. but its dead false to call Rip and Chauncey "allstars" when they were going to the Finals, and dishonest to claim that anyone thought differently at the time.

Started every game as a freshman for Louisville who won the national championship in 1986 and was named MVP of the NCAA Tournament and MVP of the conference tournament. 25 & 11 in the championship game too. Would eventually go 1-1 in the draft.

NBA career didn't exactly play out well, but I remember some solid years with the Bullets.

From a talent standpoint he's not on the level of Anthony or Melo, but he did lead a team to a national championship winning MVP as a freshman. So I wanted to make sure he got repped in this post.

since others that aren’t the best are getting mentioned.

That was a situation where the whole crew got to shine and get the limelight and Chris was a crazy unselfish player, but he was a great, great freshman player.

the Duke team that beat Michigan was so much better than the KU team that Syaracuse beat that its almost impossible to draw equivalence

i dont think freshman Melo wins a hypothetical in game matchup vs Webber either, so im not sure where the confidence comes from

I mean, Syracuse’s Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens teams were better than Carmelo’s team. That’s just the times where guys stayed in school 3-4 years vs. the 1 and done or straight to the NBA years.

Carmelo’s offensive polish as a freshman was unmatched, even by CW’s unique for his time skill set.

If Chris could shoot FT’s back then, he would’ve been a lot more effective. He was low key Shaq like from Michigan through his Bullets days.

I mean JR Reid and Pervis Ellison were great freshmen, too, that and six bucks will get you a latte.

Melo went onto to have a way better NBA career than those guys but he still managed to underachieve. OE and them wanna detract from that talking about some meaningless shit.

Also, if we change "freshman" to "first-year collegiate player," that knocks him right the fuck outta the box. That's pretty significant given that for many years, freshmen could not play on the collegiate varsity team including the eras of Wilt, Oscar, Jerry, Russell, Kareem, Walton, etc.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
