"PG Warz - Going Bad"

let's get it...

1. Russ - it was unheard of for someone to average a triple-double for a season since Oscar Robertson did it 50+ years ago. Russ is about to do it for the third year in a row. His shooting percentages had fell off some and some people try do say he "pads" but he still gets it done when it counts. He is leading to NBA in assists and his team is playing at a high level.

2. Kyrie - does everything at a high level but can he win without Bron?

3. Dame - another guy that does everything at a high level and is the heart and soul of his team.

4. Ben - despite almost never even attempting a shot outside the paint he gets it done and and his team is winning.

5. Steph - I know people are saying "how can he be 5th?!" He's one of the top players and the NBA and probably the greatest shooter ever but is he really a point guard? Draymond Green usually brings the ball up and leads the Warriors in assists.

6. CP3 - yes he has missed a lot of games and has to share the ball with James Harden but still does everything at a high level to help his team win when healthy

7. Lowry - quietly averaging a career-high 9 apg for 2nd in the NBA and is the engine that makes Toronto go.

8. Jrue - more of a combo guard but is 6th in the NBA in assists and defends positions 1 thru 3 at a high level.

9. Trae - after a rocky start to his rookie season he has come on strong enough in the 2nd half to get some ROY consideration after most people thought Luka Doncic had ran away with it. He probably will always struggle on D but averaging 18 & 8 as a rookie even on a losing team is nothing to sneeze at.

10. Fox - does everything at a high level just needs to be consistent on a nightly basis.

top 5 not-point guards

guys that are not considered "point guards" by definition but get it done:

1. Lebron - has taken the point forward role to a new level...

2. Harden - having ridiculous offensive season and has quietly stepped it up on D...

3. Giannis - another point forward that literally does everything for the Bucks...

4. Draymond - does everything for the Warriors...

5. Jokic - the best post passer in the NBA is a big reason with the Nuggets are on the Warriors heels...

I could see arguments for D-Lo over Trae. Maybe its the Laker fan in me but I want to see what D-Lo does after he gets his money as this is a contract year for him.

I am close with family of an incoming OSU hoops recruit so I guess we’ll both be watching and rooting for the Buckeyes for the next couple of years or so lol

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

im tired of 3's and 4's who cant put the ball on the floor and only rebound and go up for bunnies.

we need players who can STRETCH defenses and maek them defend the whole floor

i watched his highlight tape and it was cool but anyone can make themselves look elite with a 2 min montage of their best moments..how is he when his team is sucking, or when his jumper isnt falling? is he tough or soft?

im in my early 30s and im already feeling like im going to die without seeing ohio state win an ncaa tournament. i dont give a fuck about final four banners.

underpaid? how? he's made more money than any player that has never played in an All-Star game. He makes more money than Kevin Durant.

the first extension he signed was for peanuts. dude deserved way more but he didnt want to leave memphis.

he put up all star numbers, but the west is FULL of elite point guards..i have no problem with westbrook and curry getting all star nods over him...but some of those guys are one dimensional as hell (lillard comes to mind)

on social media earlier. They were saying with another ring Steph moves past Magic on the point guard list and I flinched. Steph is great but is he really a point guard? Is he the main guy responsible for initiating offense for his team? Is he the main guy bringing the ball up for his team? I think that answer is no.

If you want to put Steph on the “point guard” list then you have to open it up to people on the “not-point guard” list or do away with position classifications all together.

i get what you're saying, but you're overly complicating things.

point guard is not a role, it's a position.

playmaker is a role, sure. lead guard, lead ballhandler, creator, whatever. those are roles. point guard is a position. it's black and white.

steph curry is the best player in the league who plays the point guard position. period. there's no credible counterargument.

depth chart it has a "PG" by his name but if you actually WATCH the games does he really perform traditional PG duties? On another team would he still be #1?

if strictly going by the definition of "point guard", the list is accurate imo..

however, Steph is undoubtedly the best player on that PG list. his shooting prowess is THAT incredible!

there was a time when NBA old heads would say a "jump-shooting" team can't win a title but Steph has shitted on that logic. Now almost every team is built around shooting. After a run from 99 to 07 where 8 of 9 NBA titles were won by teams that featured Shaquille O'Neal or Tim Duncan, post play has almost become obsolete. And this year with Boogie the Warriors have that too.

it does bother me that his team has to hide him on D, if he was on another team he'd still be good but not unanimous MVP good

He plays point guard and in a different situation could be more of a distributor. Also funny that there is no purity argument against Dame or Jrue or anyone else here.

I wouldn't have your 8-10 guys there, Jrue plays off the ball a lot and while I like him I don't think he's top 10 at this point. Young and Fox will have their shot to establish themselves but they aren't there yet. The rest is just a matter of order.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If you look at the stats Steph has the lowest APG numbers of anybody mentioned it this post. It’s not everything but stats matter. If you’re not even top 25 in assists you can’t be the best point guard in my book I’m sorry.

I admit that those spots are a toss up, arguments could easily be made for other guys in those spots.

regularly get the rebound on the defensive end and run the fast break themselves.

Blake does some of this too and I considered putting him in my not-point guard list.

Giannis is not a point forward.

Neither is Jokic.

Not to mention, remember the Blazers were supposed to rebuild after LaMarcus left? Dame has willed them to the playoffs in every year since, and this year will be the second straight year they've had homecourt advantage in the fucking Western conference.

Meanwhile MVP Russell Westbrook missed the 'offs a few seasons ago when KD was hurt, and even with Paul George (who is supposedly MVP-caliber himself) they can't finish ahead of Portland in the regular season, nor can they advance in the playoffs.

Dame better.

milk carton status those first 3 games, he shot 37% for the series.

I know he beat Russ in the first round this year but historically Westbrook has owned him.

Rondo dismantled him in the first round last year.

..Curry is a PG

He just happens to play on a team versatile enough to have all 5 guys bring the ball up court at any time. He's also the best shooter on said team.

In a world that has 7ft centers stretching the floor and shooting 3s on the perimeter regularly, your argument about defining positions is moot.

traditional or not, Steph Curry is a PG.

Regardless of what letters are by your name on a depth chart whether you're Steph Curry, John Paxon, BJ Armstrong, Ron Harper, Mario Chalmers, or even Kyrie Irving when he played with Lebron.

..LOL

C'mon.

why include him, only to disqualify him through technicality?

You clearly acknowledged the hybrid players like Beard or Bron, but no one will ever debate their true position on the floor when ranking them among their peers. *Its not his fault that his team actually plays like a TEAM every night.

As it stands, this reads more like an excuse to disqualify Curry from the PG wars altogether. That shit ain't happening.

..You made a post about ranking active point guards in the NBA.

You then went on to mention the best point guard currently active in the league, only to then attempt to disqualify him through some bs technicality (who brings the ball up? assist? red hair? LMAO!).

When that perspective was challenged, you responded with numbers that actually disprove your OP and help bolster the resounding opinion held by the greater majority of basketball fans around the world. You then went on to mention Lebron & Westbrook when Currys numbers still keep him above and beyond his peers in PG County.

MY point is: Steph Curry is a PG. He's currently the best PG in the NBA...

..and you made a post about nothing.

In the OP:

"He's one of the top players in the NBA and probably the greatest shooter ever"

post #5:

"I think Steph IS underrated, but I was having a debate with someone on social media earlier. They were saying with another ring Steph moves past Magic on the point guard list and I flinched. Steph is great but is he really a point guard? Is he the main guy responsible for initiating offense for his team? Is he the main guy bringing the ball up for his team? I think that answer is no."

"If you want to put Steph on the 'point guard' list then you have to open it up to other people on the 'not-point guard' list or do away with position classifications all together."

I never said Steph wasn't great. But is he the greatest point guard of all-time?

That's all I'm asking.

..better than everyone else mentioned in the top 10 from your OP.

does that make him the best PG of all time?

Not necessarily, but he's clearly in the discussion. That, however, is an entirely different discussion.

Now, can we finally put this debate to rest about the best PG in the league?

..Shannon countered every point you made with logic AND stats.

Skip's opinion on whether he's a "traditional" PG doesn't change the facts.

You can try to change the narrative by questioning whether or not Curry's a "true" PG all you want, but the fact remains:

Curry is listed as a PG on every professional roster report. As such, he's currently the best PG in the NBA.
