"NFL Shit"
Tue Feb-12-19 12:46 PM by Dstl1

A little bit of noise:
Obvi...Kareem Hunt is a Brown

Honey Badger signed with the Rams

Landon Collins signs with the Texans (glad to see that dude out of the NFC East)

Panthers re-sign Eric Reid to a 3 year deal

I guess AB making it OFFICIAL official

But there's a good chance the Niners won't try to get him, coming off the Reuben Foster fiasco last season and other incidents with former players being involved with Domestic violence (like Ray McDonald).

Part of me feels like the Steelers might try to hold on to him for a season just to drive his value back up. Which assumes that he'll report if they don't trade him.

Niners better hop on that shit.

LA disappointed tf out of me... now it's time to get back on the Jimmy G agenda. and considering Kittle broke records with the Keystone Cops throwing to him, add another threat with an actual good QB and the Niners will profit.

I think he's sort of hinted at wanting to play in SF?

But after the Reuben Foster debacle, the Niners are going to be very cautious. Before they might have given up their second round pick, but I seriously doubt they offer that up now. And I don't know what the Steelers are going to realistically want for him.

Yes, with a real QB, Jimmy G to Antonio Brown and Kittle is essentially the offense. Then focus on shoring up the D in the draft. Along with maybe signing Earl Thomas.

Dude will be more respected, by Ravens fans, in hindsight. I'll never claim that Joe was in the top-5 of the league but he was a top-10 QB at one time especially when Ray Rice was around.

Preston had this to say last week about Flacco's time here. I was surprised because, over the years, he was one of Flacco's harshest critics.

>RE: It’s been real Joe. Appreciate ya.. but it was time.

Preston: Joe Flacco still has value in NFL, and plenty of teams could use him

Mike Preston
Contact Reporter
The Baltimore Sun

The NFL season just ended Sunday, so there is still a lull of player movement, but the Ravens should be able to get good compensation for quarterback Joe Flacco if they decide to trade him as expected.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after the team’s wild-card playoff loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that rookie Lamar Jackson would be the team’s starting quarterback moving forward, which indicated the Ravens would either trade or waive Flacco, who has three years remaining on his current contract.

New Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said last week that the team would have more strategies in place for Flacco and other players by the beginning of March. Free agency starts March 13.
Several teams are expected to compete for Flacco in a trade, and the Ravens should be able to get a second- or third-round draft pick, and maybe both.

“They might not get what they want, but they will be able to trade him easily,” one NFL official said. “He is a commodity. He can still play three, four or maybe five years in this league. When you look at some of the other starters in this league, Joe is still better than a lot of them. There are going to be three or four teams very interested.”

That’s because Flacco, 34, still has too many positives working in his favor. Since he took over as the starter in his rookie season in 2008, the Ravens have won a Super Bowl, played in three AFC championship games and won the AFC North title twice.

Despite recent hip and back problems, Flacco is still relatively healthy and can make all the throws from anywhere on the field.
There is one other thing: Flacco is tough and shows no signs of chucking-and-ducking behavior yet. That’s when a quarterback gets too old and fears getting hit. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has the chuck-and-duck syndrome, and so does the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson.

Flacco has been hit a lot but still believes he can win in the NFL. He doesn’t want his career to end the way last season did, when he was 4-5 as a starter before an injury forced him out and he lost the starting job to Jackson.

There are several teams that could use Flacco. The Jacksonville Jaguars might be a quarterback away from being a serious contender again, and Flacco could provide a serious spark in Denver with the Broncos. The Washington Redskins might be in the market for a new signal caller, but also keep an eye on the Carolina Panthers.

There is speculation that the Panthers might be willing to trade Cam Newton and offer him a fresh start. There are some who believe that Newton’s arm strength is no longer the same despite having shoulder surgery last month.

Regardless, there will be a taker for Flacco. He had his problems and faced legitimate criticism here in Baltimore. His mechanics were sloppy and his offseason work ethic could have been stronger.

This team often needed a fiery, compassionate leader, and it would have been nice if that came from the starting quarterback, but Flacco will be forgiven because that was never his personality.

But he still completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 38,245 yards and 212 touchdowns and finished with an 84.1 QB rating in 11 seasons. He won one Super Bowl and would have competed in at least one more if his teammates made plays in crunch time.

Ideally, the Ravens would like to cut or waive Flacco before June 1, which would save them $10.5 million on their 2019 salary cap. Wherever Flacco goes, he will have reasonable success. In Baltimore, the Ravens short-changed Flacco because they never got him a legitimate No. 1 receiver to throw to in his prime and the offensive line was always deficient.

But Flacco became the greatest quarterback in team history and at one time was among the top 10 at his position in the league. His talent has dropped off, but not to a point in which he can’t win in the right situation.

The Ravens went young and in a new direction with the offense, but Flacco can still play. Some team is going to find him as an attractive addition.

Lamar. After that playoff game, it should have been mad evident that there is nothing to build around. I'm hopeful for dude's success because I am a Ravens fan. However, we should have drafted Ridley instead of a TE so that we could have built around Joe.

These dudes talking about acquiring receivers that can do a good job blocking. So, that sounds like they're about to run that HS stuff for another year. Teddy ain't gonna wanna do that since he's a better QB all the way around.

https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/building-around-lamar-jackson-is-fun-for-creative-eric-decosta

Basically, the same things as what was seen in the playoffs when the Chargers had no fear of him throwing the ball. That's why they had 7 and 8 men on the line. No fear of LJ throwing the rock.

Despite a Super Bowl, I don't think he really even reached his potential - he had all the tools and we saw what he was able to do when he wanted, but he just wasn't a cerebral enough QB to put it all together on a consistent basis. The popular refrain amongst apologists was that he just needed weapons, but the Ravens put some fairly decent receivers in his corps throughout his tenure. I will give a pass that there was high turnover at OC during that course as well (5 if I'm remembering correctly), but at some point, Flacco just kind of checked out. He's not a terrible quarterback, and I don't know if he'll flourish in Denver, but I expected him to retire if the Ravens cut him.

Streets won't let me chill.

>"fairly decent receivers in his corps throughout his tenure."

Flacco had Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Smith all on the tail end of their careers. Torrey Smith let a mofo steal a ball from him without making an attempt to catch it. That was his last play in a Ravens uniform. Flacco's #1 receiver a few of those early years was Ray Rice.

Since Rice was dropped, Flacco's demise was hastened.

And with old receivers and throwaways, dude still put up almost 40k passing yards in his time.

Again, I'm not saying Joe's the greatest ever but Ozzie could have and should have done a better job of drafting offensive talent to put their franchise QB in the best position to succeed. We let Ozzie live too long on that '96 draft when, in fact, he's been kinda suspect for years.

a full offseason of Courtland Sutton, and hopefully Emmanuel Sanders fully recovers from his injury. the team should be better next season.

he asked for a trade. Pitt ain't gotta do shit. What do they want back? Who values him enough? If it's a team that's not a contender...how does he act, when he's mired in losing streak? How does he act if a young QB is not getting him the ball? I wonder how many teams feel like effing with dude enough to give up what Pitt may want.

diminished last year both leadership and play-wise. I was worried it was a bad sign for Landon. He was a fan favorite and one of the few bright spots over the last few years. Sad to see him go.

That said now that we have a better linebacking corps we need safeties stronger in coverage. That's an area where Landon was exposed on multiple occasions last year. While we don't need his strengths as much in the new defense, we are really exposed to where he is weak.

I hope he gets a great deal on a team that is not in the NFC East.

It sounds like Philly will receive a fifth rounder in exchange for Bennett and a seventh rounder. Not sure how great I feel about this. I know the Eagles are in a cap crunch--the idea here is to have enough for their picks and then to plug some remaining holes--but are they going to find a better value than Bennett at his position? Seems unlikely. Would have liked to have kept him for one more season and then waived him or restructured heading into his final year under contract.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Terrible move for Philly and everyone in the league besides Patriots. Bennett is still very good and is going to go wild in New England.

You can’t pay everybody you want to keep on your team. He’s 33 and expensive and the Eagles don’t have much wiggle room.

The better Carr isn't on the way out but it feels like he's starting because Gruden hasn't found "his" perfect starting quarterback and has to settle.

AB's agent deserves an end if the year nomination. He takes counts for 21.1 mill, off the top of my head, of the Steelers cap.

he had his second highest QB rating, and most yardage of his career. He had about 3 games where played like absolute trash, but also had a 10 game streak without throwing an INT which was the longest in the league, despite having damn near no O-line, (he was sacked over 50 times compared to 15 in 2016), losing both Coop and Crabtree, losing Beast Mode to injury, getting used to a new coach/system. Raiders had a shit ton of deficiencies last season but very little of it was Carr. Shit, if I was him, I'd wanna fight Stephen A too lol.

93. "The local spin was that Carr might get waived due to Cap issues"
In response to Reply # 86

Obviously this was before the AB trade, but during the season while things were going pear-shaped for the Raiders, the local buzz was going to be that Gruden was going to cut Carr because the cap him would be relatively minimal and then bring in "his" guy. We'll say how that shakes out now that have a clear #1 WR.

In response to Reply # 0

That's a big number for a guy coming off an ACL. If he comes back 100% fit though, I'm confident he'll thrive there.

Big loss for the Bucs

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26230121/49ers-sign-ex-bucs-lb-alexander

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander plans to sign a four-year, $54 million deal that includes $27 million guaranteed with the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN and multiple reports.

Before Alexander sustained a torn ACL on Oct. 21 last season, the Buccaneers were willing to offer him as much as $10 million annually, a source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN.

But the feeling at the time was that Alexander, 24, who led the NFL with 108 solo tackles in 2016, was seeking closer to Luke Kuechly's nearly $12.4 million and an agreement could not be reached. Instead, Alexander ended up topping Kuechly with a deal that averages $13.5 million per season.

Even after the injury, the Bucs expressed a desire to retain Alexander, whom general manager Jason Licht called the "heartbeat of the defense" -- but at the right price.

Sources say Alexander's recovery is right on schedule. He has been under the care of Dr. James Andrews and has resumed weightlifting and jogging. He has resumed weightlifting -- including squatting -- and is now jogging.

Alexander's strength is being active up front and in the backfield. He's particularly physical against the run. At times, he has encountered challenges dropping into coverage.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2017 and has 380 tackles, seven sacks, six forced fumbles and six interceptions in 46 games since being selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2015 draft

I thought I remembered years ago, and this may have been before he won DPOY, that he wanted to end his career in AZ.

He's a HOFer. Maybe not 1st ballot, but he'll definitely be there with Ray, Ed, and Jon.

DeCosta's moves are shrewd, but some perplexing (Boyle?). I wonder what he has planned for tomorrow.

Yea, I remember him saying that. Play out the end of his career back home and go into the hall as a Raven.

You’re tripping over Zadarius too? Did you watch him play before last season? I’m happy that these cats are getting paid but neither were worth that much for the Ravens to stress keeping them.

In the name of "contending" and chickens coming home to roost on a slew of bad drafts, our cap has been sorely mismanaged. A rebuild should have taken place four years ago, but instead, they saddled themselves with more cap debt via Flacco's 3-year, $66M extension. Then, with shallow depth at key positions, Oz repeatedly kicked the can down the road extending and signing a number of stopgaps to backloaded deals that ended up counting as dead money when they were let go, creating a vicious cycle of cap mismanagement.

Meanwhile, many of the other teams around the league were using the explosive salary cap growth to lock up their top homegrown players. Inevitably, the overall talent pool is diminished, the Ravens have more notable free agents than other teams, and some franchises have more cap space than they can. That equation equals an exodus of decent to good players from the Ravens because the market has opened up.

DeCosta is finally prioritizing long term salary cap health and that is the best move he could possible make. Lamar will come on the cheap until 2022. With fiscal responsibility, patience and excellent drafting, the Ravens will be fine. Let's let EDC work his plan.

Streets won't let me chill.

Partly because they didn't have nearly as much.

With Bowles, the GM didn't do as much as far as free agents and depended largely on the draft. Unfortunately for Bowles, unless someone fell in McGagnan's lap, his drafts were terrible.

Not to mention he never got Bowles a QB worth a damn. Bowles had Fitzpatrick, McCown and a rookie Darnold to work with, and their best WR during that stretch was Quincy Enunwa

but I would not be mad at drafting Bosa. With Bosa we should have one of the best pass rushes in the league. If we can trade back a few spots and get the number #1 WR that would be great as well. I have a feeling we sign Thomas in the next few days.

and you go from one of the worst pass rushing teams to one of the best. whoever we get on offense at this point isn't going to be as big of a game changer. plus we have "help" coming in the form off key guys coming back from injury.

personally, i'd be super stoked if we go into next year w/ these 3 plus some capable plug-in at safety.

I think Bosa would be a great pick. With news the Chiefs let Berry go and Thomas went to Baltimore i could definitely see signing him in SF. That would be a good young D with some veteran smart pieces to teach the young guys. Look for a big bodied receiver in the second round. We know we got speed for days in Goodwin and Pettis. We need someone who can get balls over the middle and be a redzone threat with Kittle. Add that with Mckinnon coming back. That would look solid on both sides of the ball.

Which I guess wouldn't be the worst thing. Yeah, I'd rather take Bosa, but the school of thought seems to be that Williams is the best player in the draft, and pairing him with Buckner would make them monsters up the middle.

I dunno. We still eventually need to draft a WR and a CB; Verret can't be their only DB pick-up.

I do not mind him and Buckner up front, but i would be fine with either Williams or Bosa if we stick with the #2 pick. We just signed Matthews and Ward so that adds some pieces to our two biggest positions of need.

a QB and a RT in the first round.

What a huge hit in dead cap though. 33m is fucking insane.

Guess all those constant rumors were for a reason

As much as I loved OBJ, Saquon showed he is a closer fit for the face of the organization, and I guess Mara really was keeping a tally of petty shit OBJ did over the years

Full rebuild complete. Well almost. Now all that's left is Eli.

Amos’s deal is the only one that I would have liked the Cowboys to better.

We can still get out of this with a safety like Haha Clinton-Dix or Boston or draft one. The only scary thing is we know they might refuse to jump on one on Day 2.

We have to pay Lawrence, I assume Dak and Cooper. I hope B Jones earns a shitload of money too.

We might pay Elliot - so with another 60-70 million in commitments next offseason - you can’t build a team throwing 25-30 million at RB and S on top of those other extensions. And we could stand to spend some money on the lines.

In NO he has the perfect setup behind Brees who may retire after this year with Sean Payton coaching and the other offensive weapons already in place.

As far as Miami goes, sure he’ll have the reins from day 1 but it’s a new coaching staff with unknowns at the skill positions. Also playing “at home” can be overrated and come with a lot of off-the-field distractions and headaches.

the situation with the Arizona Cardinals.

GM Steve Keim fired head coach Steve Wilks after 1 season and is now ready to bail on the QB he drafted in the first round last year in Josh Rosen and take another QB with the #1 overall pick.

If the Kliff Kingsbury-Kyler Murray thing doesn't work out he should feel some heat.

This is a headscratcher but also makes sense given he's a Shanahan guy.
It's a headscratcher because we essentially have 3 of the same type of RB in Jet, Brieda and Coleman. We also have Raheem Mostert who is valuable on ST.

I did not mind the other deals one bit but the Cowboys are irresponsible for not beating those, especially after giving Witten a couple million to keep us from finding a real TE.

There are going to be safeties, DL, and receivers there at 58 but we can only pick one.

Trey Flowers is a good player. Belichick will look for another Flowers in the 3rd or 4th round, while the Lions pay $18 million/yr until 2023 for an edge defender who's best attribute is defending the run.

same for Trent Brown. solid player who had a career year under the best OL coach in the NFL, so the Raiders commit $36 million to a lineman the Patriots got for a third rounder last off-season.

nail every or vast majority of your picks and utilize their rookie deals and let a team grossly overpay as you replace them with another draft pick that you gained in a trade. they make it look super easy

I don't even think Belicheck is a GREAT gm. He is good but his real genius is as a coach.

Will's assessment of Flowers is currents but…it's hard to blame Detroit when Flowers was the best they were going to get at a position of great need, in a time when money is not their biggest problem.

They need good players who are ready to buy into Matt Patricia's gameplan and capable of hitting the ground running with a minimum of hand-holding. They can't wait to find their starting DE in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft.

Meanwhile, Belicheck just went out and traded for Michael Bennett, who is older (and better) than Flowers. So yeah, he probably will draft a guy in the mid-rounds but it's Bennett who is replacing Flowers next year and possibly the one after.

especially mid-level or late round guys who don't become stars but become useful starters.

I don't really like him as a GM at all.

But Brady + Belichick coaching + Belichick talent development = greatest NFL dynasty of all time.

that's a nice deal for a team needing pass rushers. Houston is still only 30, but if he busts it's not going to hurt much (Colts have like $50 million in cap space left).

In response to Reply # 0

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It's not that Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco won't help rookie quarterback Drew Lock; it's that Flacco doesn't think that mentoring the young passer is the biggest part of his job description.

"Listen, I have so many things to worry about. I'm trying to go out there and play good football. I'm trying to go out there and play the best football of my life," Flacco said Monday, after the Broncos' first day of organized team activities. "As far as a time constraint and all of that stuff, I'm not worried about developing guys or any of that. That is what it is. I hope he does it well. I don't look at that as my job. My job is to go win football games for this football team."

Later, Flacco added: "Listen, I hope he does learn from me because that means we're out there and we're slinging it around and having a lot of fun."

Flacco suggested that because he is learning a new offense as well, Lock would glean more from offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello than anyone else during the process. The Broncos made Lock the second of two second-round picks -- the 42nd selection overall -- in last month's NFL draft.

..esp when it was clear that they were parting ways.

Signing Suh?

Ehh... Can't say I'm surprised. Overhauling a team requires a few rentals.

We shall see.

..since when has Belichick hesitated on mining the Bucs for underachieving talent with something to prove?

Blount?
Talib?
Bennett?

This should be a no-brainer for all parties.

There are probably dudes who play who don't care about their jersey number. I don't know Gerald McCoy but he was always sensitive to how he was perceived by fans & critics.

I could be wrong but this looks like a slap in the face to me.

***

https://bucswire.usatoday.com/2019/06/03/did-the-bucs-do-gerald-mccoy-dirty-again/

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former All-Pro defensive tackle Gerald McCoy two weeks ago, only to turn around and sign the guy picked one spot ahead of him in the 2010 NFL Draft Ndamukong Suh, many felt it couldn’t get much more insulting for McCoy.

Fortunately, though, the Bucs are here to prove everyone wrong. Take a look.

New Buccaneers’ DT Ndamukong Suh will wear No. 93 – the same number Gerald McCoy wore during his time in Tampa Bay.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 3, 2019

I mean, the metaphorical body isn’t even cold yet and they already reissued his number. Now, there are a number of ways to look at this. First, for what it’s worth, Suh and McCoy both wore No. 93 in college — Suh at Nebraska and McCoy at Oklahoma — and at his last two stops with the Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins, Suh has donned that number. In Detroit he wore 90, so while he didn’t need to go with 93 with the Bucs, it seems like the number has meaning for him.

On the flip side, this guy is here for just one year. Unless Tampa Bay wins the Super Bowl in his lone season with the Bucs, I doubt Suh will be remembered as fondly long term as McCoy. And, while the Bucs aren’t big into retiring numbers, it would’ve been a nice gesture on their part to hold off reissuing 93 for at least one season.

Now, they’ll have to watch McCoy line up against them now that he’s a Carolina Panther.

Who ever said the offseason was boring?

But to immediately give it away to his replacement comes off as dismissive & disrespectful for a guy who threw all his weight behind the team & more importantly, the community.
