"Is the step back 3 a travel?"

I can't see it any other way

I'm not talking about the obvious uncalled travels where guys are shuffling their feet and taking like 4-5 steps

I'm talking about...giving up the dribble...jab step forward...2 steps back

https://youtu.be/5o0Y5pOIhPo

= 3 steps

What ya'll think?

The NBA explanation about gathering, etc...is BS too IMO...

We getting a run in, I'm calling that errytime.

even more so because he sometimes drags the back foot.

while we're here, the eurostep. I don't think that's a travel except when players drag that foot before release the ball.

At the point the video is saying step 1, harden can still put the ball on the floor and dribble legally. The dribble ended when his second hand touched the ball. Thn he took two steps

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

If your dribble is still live you, can take as many steps as you want before you decided to gather the ball.

We're going to argue when he gives up the dribble?

So instead of taking 3 steps, he dribbles again

The vid says dribble ends as soon as the ball touches his hand.

If harden van legally dribble the ball, the dribble hasnt ended.

Check the rule book. Rule 4 probably section 3 or 4.

In that case, you can't even dribble the ball. One of the key things players are taught is the ability to take multiple steps between dribbles or with the hand on the ball.

What you are in insinuating doesnt make sense practically. What you are stating is that a ref should be counting steps every time the player is dribbling the ball, bc maybe he'll pick up his dribble? Lol

actually two, things i am seeing more and more and not sure what the rules are because when i played organized basketball they were not as common.

one, if you're denying the ball to an offensive player (not making contact with him but putting an arm in front of him to disrupt a potential pass to him), can he just push it out of the way? guarding guys in the post and getting an arm in front of them (again no contact) some will push it down with their left arm or sometimes both arms. that doesn't seem legal but i don't know what the rule is.

the other one is on screens. you're going to set a screen and you're already set, can the defender you're screen hand check you or push off you for leverage? some of these guys throw a hard hand check into you or, let's say your man rejects the screen and goes the other way, they will extend an arm and push off to get a stronger step in the direction of the ball handler.

are these things illegal or just annoying AF?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

jab, step back, jump into a shot.

the thing he does with his left hand i guess could be considered a carry if he were to continue his dribble off it. but i wouldnt even think about a carry here, more just his footwork if it were three steps or not. i do think on some step backs there is a drag or short step that turns it into a violation technically

Every player in this video takes a step ON the gather (no more dribbles) then two more (the euro).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBtZHE3575w

I tend to think if the gather hasn't happened (meaning two hands on the ball) your feet can still move. Once that ends, meaning you can't legally dribble again without violation, you can take two steps so long as you are in motion/haven't established pivot.

3 steps

not all of those euro steps are equal

in 8 and 4, they pick up the ball and take 3 steps = travel

I want to call the Lavine move at #2 a travel too, but I'm assuming the first 2 steps don't count because he's landing after catching the ball...but he definitely takes 3 steps

Miss me with the gather BS too

3 steps after your last dribble = travel.

in the last two weeks. The steps he took in the original video are nowhere to be found in the games he's played since folks were complaining. He has actually refined it, or toned it down to a simple two step hop. Which proved to me that he knew exactly what he was getting away with when folks were complaining.

What's been offered so far in defense of this bullshit is...

...the rules were changed in 2009, allowing for 3 steps after your last dribble...something something about gathering...etc...

What's being missed, is that travels calls have been lenient in the NBA for too long already

Now we're defending 3 step step backs...and what's now being allowed...is 3-5 steps

...or in the video provided...6-7 steps...

How can everybody praise dude without calling this bullshit out

...and now we have youngins thinking this is not only legal, but a necessary part of the modern game...

Nah, fuck that.

No other steps, no jabs, certainly no raising of the pivot. This bullshit about how many steps are allowed after your last dribble just isn't the way any brand of ball has been called in two decades, high school, college, or NBA. You're why rec league games have such bad fucking refs.

I'm glad that you learned basketball watching Kelly Tripucka or whatever and are mad that there are fewer Mikan drills in NBA practices, but hey, what if you shut the fuck up and realized that no one agrees with you, you functional flat-earther?

Crab dribble as example one. As long as the star player purs up points and gets strong ratings it doesn't count as a travel.

4 steps =/= a travel;

"The offensive player gathers with his right foot on the ground. He then takes two legal steps, before losing control of the ball. After regaining possession, a player is allowed to regain his pivot foot and pass or shoot prior to that foot returning to the ground. This is legal." NBA refs

In response to Reply # 0

In the comments there someone says "a hop step counts as two steps" but there is no "hop step" there and if there were it would be four steps, uh, I guess. He takes two steps and goes up into his shot. That is not a travel.

IMO the most common form of traveling in the NBA is the "cheat step" that players use to shuffle into triple threat position. They come hard to meet the ball and then take a step before the dribble or square up to get into triple threat position. Some guys are so good at it that it looks like a travel when it's not, but most get the benefit of that doubt.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Ball rests in brons hand so yeah, start counting steps.

Not sure what that has to do with a step back 3 tho
