Sexton is slowly moving in the company of some franchise notables to start this season.
First player with 20 or more points in the first 5 games of a season since LeBron in 2004-05. Over all, he's the 4th Cav to do this in history, the others being Bron, Austin Carr, and Bingo Smith.
In the first two games (which were wins) to start a season, Sexton scored 25+, something only 2 other Cavaliers have done: LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Since 2000-01, there have been no 2-0 starts to the season for a team without LeBron until now.
In the first 6 games of the season, these last 3 being without rookie Isaac Okoro, Kevin Love, or Kevin Porter Jr., some key rotational players.... Cavs are 4-2, and Sexton is averaging 26 points a game on 57/55/77 splits. Those will improve because he's been missing a gang of wide open shots. This is also coming from an offense where he's gunning his way to scores. Sexton's assist count is usually between 2-5 and the team routinely has 20+ a game, if not 30+.
But beyond the boxscores and stats... Sexton is improving greatly on defense. Where he was usually a minus, getting his ass kicked on the floor, he's actually swung games around with one or two key moves on D, even getting up there to block shots at the rim.
Is he better than Trae? No. Trae actually doubled down on the Nash and Steph-isms, and now even added some Harden foul hunting so he gets to the line. Sexton has impressive FT numbers but he don't get the calls.
Cavs beat the Hawks in their most recent matchup (due to Sexton's hustle, defense, and scoring), but I still give the Hawks more of the eye-test as far as how they play at this point in the game.
I'm beginning to ask the question... is he better than SGA, though? Sexton absolutely is not your floor general type guard (that's Garland, and a whole other post). But.... does SGA do any one thing better than Sexton? I don't think so. But there's still time. Now he has the guard duties for the Thunder and that's going to be interesting in their current iteration absent CP3 and Stevens.
I've seen enough. Cavs got away not just with one (Sexton), but it looks like they're gonna get away with four (the others being Garland, Porter, and Okoro). Not bad coming out of the ashes of the LeBron return and 4 straight trips to the Finals followed by 3 straight trips to the lottery.
Sexton is ABSOLUTELY better than 90% of the dudes that kept him on the bench during last year's Rising Stars at the All-Star Game.
POOPINCHICAGO, we comin' for you.
Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.
