"Riding Jordan's box-office coat-tails, coming to theaters near you in 20..."

Should be interesting if Jordan himself makes a cameo in this.

Ryan Coogler Teams With LeBron James to Produce ‘Space Jam 2’ for Warner Bros.

LeBron James is hitting the ground running since making Hollywood his new home. The NBA player is teaming up with “Black Panther” helmer Ryan Coogler, tapping the director to produce the follow-up to Michael Jordan’s beloved “Space Jam.”

James’s production company, SpringHill Entertainment tweeted out a photo confirming the addition of Coogler to the “Space Jam 2” team.

— SpringHill Ent. (@SpringHillEnt) September 19, 2018

TheWrap previously exclusively reported that Terence Nance, the filmmaker behind HBO’s “Random Acts of Flyness,” will direct.

Bringing Coogler, who’s been a hot commodity on the heels of “Black Panther,” on board is a big get for the project.

“Space Jam 2” has been rumored for a while, with a number of names attached to the project. “Fast and Furious” director Justin Lin was previously in talks to direct. Andrew Dodge (“Bad Words”) wrote the script. Charlie Ebersol developed a previous iteration of the project and is expected to be involved in some kind of producing capacity, should the sequel move forward.

James signed a production deal with Warner Bros. and “Space Jam 2” is being developed with the new Los Angeles Laker forward, though he’ll need to approve the script before officially signing on to star. Other basketball players are expected to cameo, though it’s currently unclear whether Bill Murray will return.

Michael Jordan starred with Murray in the original “Space Jam,” which grossed $230 million worldwide. The Chicago Bulls guard led a team of Looney Tunes characters, including Bugs Bunny, against a squad of giant aliens.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news of Coogler’s involvement.

like waaaaaay back when it was first rumored. How many years ago was that? I was like please just leave it alone. Not because Space Jam is a classic. But because MJ's acting was bad enough we dont need anymore athletes acting. But then I saw Lebron in Trainwreck and fuck it give him any role he wants. Dude was solid and seemed like a natural. Might not be as good without a real person to go back and forth with. But can he be any worse than Jordan?

I can’t see why anyone else would care. I was a teenager and couldn’t have cared less about some Space Jam. The extent of my interest was having a crush on Monica in the For You I Will video, and liking Coolio and LL’s verses on Hit Em High.

for Nike/Jordan (or is it Jordan/Nike?) to tie some sneakers to this movie, no?

I'm far from a sneaker head, and I'm way too much of a Knicks fan to have interest in buying Jordans, but that would be a prudent move.

And for folks thinking I'm dissing him, I'm not saying Draymond's not a valuable piece for the Warriors, because he clearly is. But at the same time, he's not a basketball star on the same level that more prominent players like Giannis, LeBron, Steph, Durant, or Westbrook are.

on a Terms of Endearment curve, or something. It was a silly, fun movie with a gang of basketball players that couldn't act (MJ, Chuck, Mugsy, Larry (Bird and Johnson), etc), a couple of legit actors and a bunch of animated characters. It had an unbelievable plot (like most movies...real or animated), a dope soundtrack and made a shit ton of money. Plus, it spawned one of the best Air Jordans in the history of Air Jordans...top 3, easily. Space Jam 2 is not gonna be made to become the next Moonlight or some shit.

Like, I was the definition of who this movie was made for (a 12 year old basketball fan who grew up on Loony Toons and had the soundtrack to this before I even saw it) and still knew it was bad.

I will say I think Lebron COULD do something interesting with this, potentially. There's a fun movie in that universe somewhere. Not if it's just going to basically be the same as the first one, though.

swipe:

LeBron James reportedly struggling to recruit players ... for 'Space Jam 2'

Jason Owens,Yahoo Sports•April 5, 2019

The upcoming NBA offseason promises to be a doozy.

Among the many pending high-profile storylines is the fate of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Will Magic Johnson land one or more of the summer’s free-agent whales to play alongside LeBron James, and will James do his part to lure them?

James prides himself as a master recruiter, able to attract top talent offering the promise of playing alongside one of the game’s all-time greats to compete for championships.

Report: James struggling to find ‘Space Jam’ cohorts
But if Brian Windhorst is to be believed, James’ recruiting prowess may not be what it used to be.

He can’t even get players to sign up to alongside him for “Space Jam 2,” according to the ESPN reporter.

Windhorst told Rachel Nichols on “The Jump” Thursday that James has struggled to close the deal with “top guys” to join him on set.

“And in all honesty, he's been recruiting players to come and try to be in 'Space Jam' with him this summer, and he hasn't been able to close some of those deals,” Windhorst told Nichols as reported by NBC Sports. "Some of the top guys he wants to come and be with him in the movie. ... ‘You put me in the movie where you're the star, I'm gonna be the one you're dunking on.’ ”

Big offseason in L.A.
So that doesn’t bode well. If James can’t convince guys to play a movie role in his shadow, can he convince them to do so on the basketball court?

Of course luring players for a movie and a basketball team are two completely different tasks. But, as James himself has said, this offseason is critical for his tenure with the Lakers.

If the Lakers don’t land at least one of the summer’s prime free agents that include Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, it’s going to be difficult to salvage what’s expected to be the last stop of the 34-year-old’s career.

With rumors pointing Durant to New York and painting Leonard as reticent to play a secondary role to James, LeBron may be facing similar recruiting challenges on the court as Windhorst reports exist on set.

If that’s the case, a trying season in Los Angeles could extended into an even more difficult offseason.

‘Space Jam’ Sequel Finally Has a Title (and It’s Not ‘Space Jam 2’)

You can officially stop calling it “Space Jam 2.” In an Instagram post Thursday, LeBron James revealed the title for the sequel to the Looney Tunes-Meets-Basketball film along with the film’s logo.

The sequel is now titled “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” and the film’s release date is still set for 2021.

The 1996 original film starred Michael Jordan playing basketball alongside Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” updates the premise with LeBron James leading the cast, and major current NBA stars are expected to make cameos. It also stars Don Cheadle.

“Girls Trip” filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee is directing from a screenplay by Justin Lin, Willie Ebersol, Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello. “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler is producing.

The original “Space Jam,” which earned $230.4 million at the worldwide box office, told a fictional story about what Jordan was up to during his brief retirement from Basketball in the mid 1990s. In the film, he’s back to the game by the Looney Tunes in a desperate attempt to beat a team of aliens. It also starred Bill Murray, Wayne Knight, Theresa Randle and featured cameos by Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Muggsy Bouges, Larry Johnson and Shawn Bradley.

James is making the film through his SpringHill Entertainment banner. Terrence Nance was at one point attached to direct but was replaced with Lee.
