..but i would caution anyone that's quick to write him off as simply being a drug addict that couldn't get it together.
If it turns out that he's been self medicating to deal with mental issues, then the NFL (and everyone else around him) has been doing him a serious disservice by enabling him without a better plan of managing his issues.

I recently read about the Dallas Cowboy who almost lost it all and had a baby sitter with him at all times to keep him straight.
Unless you are by his side at all times I don’t think you can take the blame when he slips up and gets high.
Whoever he signs with has to hold his hand and most teams aren’t goi g to do but so much for a guy.

and having someone watch over you is really different from actually supporting you through a mental health problem.
IF he was self-medicating a mental health issue and teams focused on "don't self-medicate" (babysitter) and not "let's help you not feel the need to self-medicate" (a program of therapy and support) then they were doing him a disservice .

beyond that is a story of stigma and ostracization...teams dropped him from draft boards because of mental health concerns and then he goes to the cowboys and they don't have a plan set up for him (there's zero in the above piece about what they did his first year). Imagine if they had reached out to a guy like Moskowitz as part of their onboarding for Gregory (or all players, tbh)?

..the minute Cleveland shut him down, the league should've put him on the commissioner's exempt list. If he's having mental issues, he could be a danger to himself or others. I don't know his current diagnosis or medical history, but anyone that "steps away" career more than once citing mental issues is in trouble.

To say he was suspended all those games simply for weed is an intellectually dishonest argument. He had multiple dwi’s and showed up to practices or missed them due to being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. It wasn’t just weed. Regardless if it was only weed - which it wasn’t - his choices were self-destructive and could’ve really hurt others in the process.
