"Will LeBron James be slander-free for the year?"

Probably not, at least not on these boards, but I thought it was important to post up this piece of positive LeBron James news since it is overarching from anything pertaining to sports. As much as I dislike the dude, this is major and all the props in the world have to be given to him for opening up a school like this.

LeBron James opened a public school in Akron for at-risk kids

The I Promise School starts Monday.
By James Dator Jul 30, 2018, 10:34am EDT

In Akron, Ohio, it’s the first day of school for 240 at-risk students who will be attending the inaugural year of the I Promise School — and it’s all thanks to LeBron James. The NBA superstar created the school as an extension of the LeBron James Family Foundation to give kids opportunities to thrive despite difficult life situations.

“I know these kids, basically more than they know themselves. I’ve walked these same streets. I’ve rode the same bikes on the streets they ride on. I went through the same emotions — the good, the bad, the adversity. Everything these kids are going through — the drugs, the violence, the guns, everything they’re going through as kids, I know. For me to be in a position where I have the resources, the finance, the people, the structure and the city around me — why not?”

How did LeBron start his own public school?

In November 2017, the LeBron James Family Foundation approached the Akron school board about assisting in the creation of a school designed to help at-risk kids who are lagging behind in their studies and struggling at home.

The I Promise School is a joint venture between the foundation and Akron Public Schools. The school board oversaw the creation of the curriculum and ensured the school would meet educational standards, while LeBron served as the primary donor to help shape the outside-the-classroom goals of the school.

How does the I Promise School differ from any other school?

The school will operate with a longer-than-normal school year, with a focus on accelerated learning to bring kids up to speed who otherwise might be lagging. In addition, there is a focus on combating factors outside of the classroom that could cause children to struggle.

Services are available to help students deal from stress related to parents who are struggling to make ends meet. In addition there are activities to prevent the kids from having too much idle time and potentially getting into trouble.

The school also provides services to families, which include job placement assistance for parents and an on-site food bank that will allow parents to pick out foods they can prepare at home.

LeBron James often credits his bicycle as a huge factor in his childhood that gave him an escape from dangerous parts of his neighborhood and the freedom to explore — every student will receive a bicycle when they arrive.

Principal Brandi Davis explained the goals of the I Promise School to the Los Angeles Times:

“I think the missing link in public education is that family wraparound support,” said Brandi Davis, the school’s principal. “Because our students come to school and they’re worried about things at home. … We want to create that safe, that secure and that caring and loving environment for our families and our students so that our kids can focus on education.”

Hasn’t LeBron assisted with education before?

The LeBron James Family Foundation has been involved in helping Akron and its surrounding areas for years. In 2015 he announced an initiative that would pay for more than 1,000 kids to attend college.

LeBron has also funded the “Wheels for Education” program, which started in 2011 and provides kids with school supplies, access to computers, and a bicycle inside a system designed to keep kids motivated to complete their homework and get good grades.

I have never had a *personal* issue with Bron.

His criticism on here has been NBA related stuff.

But this school and other humanitarian efforts he has been behind will position him for Global Icon status.

I doubt he will ever be put in a Kaep-esque position where his livelihood is at risk, but the goodwill he has engendered will allow him to reach far and wide.

This story needs to be oversaturating the news cycle right now though.

p.s. Slander is spoken defamation, libel is written. And the defense to both is the truth. #lawschooldebttalkin

dude sets it up with "argument AGAINST Lebron" like it's yes he's a great player or no he's not, without nuance.

It is clinically insane.

What human being is really beyond criticism in their chosen field? Let alone in sports.

As hard as I stanned for Jordan I never imagined that there were just zero legitimate criticisms. In fact, I can easily make some of them myself. There just aren't very many. That's WHY he is so great.

I'm seriously curious as to what your legitimate criticisms are.

Almost always - critiques of LeBron *the basketball player* are rooted in a bias (he plays on your team's rival; he rivaled/rivals your favorite player etc..).

But what are the meritorious arguments against him as a basketball player? His free-throw shooting %?

I truly intended for this post to give props and respect for something that far outreaches what the man will do on the basketball court and if this school is successful, will lead to generational greatness. And this is from someone that isn't close to being a fan of LeBron as you appear to be.

If you want to recruit others to your LeBron culthood, please set up another post for that effort.

free throws is a big deal

shot selection can be terrible at times

defense lacks at times and kind of permeates through the team

Lebron as a GM has been ungodly terrible...at the same times the players do give everything they have for him

Turnovers have always plagued him...his vision as a passer is other wordly but sometimes he presses way to much with cross court passes

seems pretty legit to me
every player in the world has weakness's that they can improve on

>shot selection can be terrible at times

Not sure that's a valid critique. His offensive efficiency ratings are through the roof and he shoots a very high % from the field (especially when you consider that he's shooting a lot more long-range jumpers) - and he's been shooting the deep 3 with heightened accuracy. He also sets teammates up for open looks in their sweet spot 8 times out of 10. The weakness there can be when he holds the ball until late in the shot-clock and then doesn't have a decent look and sets a teammate up for a tough shot - but that happens far less than his efficient play-making.

>defense lacks at times and kind of permeates through the team

fair critique (in the past couple of years). His defense has tailed off considerably - though he can still defend at a high-level in high-leverage moments - but certainly his (and the Cavs overall defense) was sub-par last year.

>Lebron as a GM has been ungodly terrible...at the same times
>the players do give everything they have for him

short-sighted critique. When LeBron was de facto "GM" (which he never really was - it's just that he worked in concert w/ Griffin to make moves) - the Cavs actually pulled off some amazing moves, landing key acquisitions (they acquired Mozgov, JR/Shump, Korver etc.. and gave up nothing in return). Retaining TT was a very important move in 2015/2016 and all of the aforementioned names made considerable contributions en route to the 2016 title campaign.

After 2016 - Bron signed a 2-year deal w/ Cleveland and lost his executive leverage. Gilbert (the worst owner in the league) then got drunk ambition, fired Griffin (inexplicably) - and iced out LeBron when it come to front office decisions. What ensued? Kyrie being traded for damaged goods, and then a botched attempt to mask that grotesque trade w/ the spare-tire "blockbuster" (hood, clarkson, nance, hill). Many (incorrectly) cite those moves in 2017 & 2018 as being attached to "LeGM" - but they weren't. Those were all signature Dan Gilbert moves.

>Turnovers have always plagued him...his vision as a passer is
>other wordly but sometimes he presses way to much with cross
>court passes

fair critique. He does turn the ball over too often (with at times carelessness) - but some of those turnovers are to be expected when you're constantly seeking the creative option as playmaker.

>seems pretty legit to me
>every player in the world has weakness's that they can improve
>on

for sure - it's just that some seem to obsess over LeBron's - but some of that is to be expected as the greatest player in the game.

Everyone has their weaknesses (Wilt's foul shooting, to a lesser extent Jordan's left, etc) but LeBron is almost complete and excels in most areas.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I'll sports hate him for being a Laker and for being a constant Warriors foil, but as a professional athlete he's so on point.

is silly. You would think they were talking about a guy who was a marginal all-star but was doing great things in the community.

It's kinda like saying: "Look I think Usain Bolt is cool, my problem is with his sprinting. He tails off at the end of races sometimes which is why he'll never be Carl Lewis."

Love his ambition, love what he is doing for future generations and I respect his acumen. Dude is gonna be the next Warren Buffet. I definitely plan to invest in what he has going, waiting on that Blaze Pizza IPO among other things. Watch him fuck around and cake like Oprah, own a studio, etc. LeBron James the man will do even bigger things than LeBron James the athlete.

President Trump bashes LeBron James over recent interview

President Donald Trump took a shot at Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James in a tweet Friday night.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!
11:37 PM - Aug 3, 2018

James was interviewed by CNN's Don Lemon on Monday, after his LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron (Ohio) Public Schools launched a new elementary school for at-risk children in his hometown.

In the interview, James discussed the impact of sports and how it brings people together. He said he felt Trump was "using sports to kinda divide us."

"Sports has never been something that divides people," James told Lemon. "It's always been something that brings someone together."

Trump's tweet came four days after the CNN interview originally aired. In the tweet, Trump also appeared to take sides in the LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan debate, saying, "I like Mike!"

Swipe: Melania Trump praises LeBron James in statement after husband insults him
Shortly after Donald Trump mocked NBA star, first lady says she would visit his school and Michael Jordan joins chorus of support

Amanda Holpuch in New York and Ben Jacobs in New Orleans

Sat 4 Aug 2018 15.52 EDT

The US first lady, Melania Trump, said she would be open to visiting the NBA superstar LeBron James’s new public school, the day after her husband questioned the Los Angeles Lakers player’s intelligence.

Donald Trump insulted James on Friday night hours after CNN re-aired an interview with the basketball player and reporter Don Lemon. “Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon,” Trump said. “He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do.”

Many, including professional athletes and the Republican governor of Ohio, were critical of Trump’s statements.

On Saturday afternoon, Melania Trump also issued a surprising, positive statement about James, but did not reference her husband.

“It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today,” a statement provided by her spokeswoman said. “As you know, Mrs. Trump has traveled the country and world talking to children about their well-being, healthy living, and the importance of responsible online behavior with her Be Best initiative. Her platform centers around visiting organizations, hospitals and schools, and she would be open to visiting the I Promise School in Akron.”

Because Donald Trump mentioned the NBA legend and Charlotte Hornets principal owner Michael Jordan in the tweet – ending with “I like Mike!” – Jordan also weighed in.

“I support LJ,” Jordan said in a statement. “He’s doing an amazing job for his community.”

James, one of the most prominent athletes in the US, has been critical of Trump for years.

In September 2017, James called Trump a “bum” for rescinding his invitation to the Golden State Warriors to celebrate their basketball championship with a visit to the White House.

“Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!” James tweeted at the time.

In February, James explained why he was critical of the president: “While we cannot change what comes out of that man’s mouth, we can continue to alert the people that watch us, that listen to us, that this is not the way.”

And in an interview with CNN this week, James told Lemon that Trump was “trying to divide our sport, but at the end of the day, sport is the reason why we all come together”.

When Lemon asked: “What would you say to the President if he was sitting right here?” James said: “I would never sit across from him.”

Trump’s tweet on Friday night drew accusations of racism because Lemon and James are black men and had been discussing Trump’s previous attacks on black athletes in the interview. Representative Tim Ryan, a Democrat who represents James’s hometown’s district, said: “I think it reveals and continues to reveal that president Trump race baits.”

The sports commentator Bill Simmons tweeted: “LeBron is a smart dude (and one of the most thoughtful athletes we have) – this is a bullshit tweet and feels more than a little racist.”

James, meanwhile, did not weigh in on the debate and instead on Saturday morning shared photos from the school he just opened.

The 'slander free for a year' phrase was in reference to folks on here saying Carmelo Anthony was slander free for a year when he marched in Baltimore to protest the Freddie Gray incident.

yea - poor reference. The only reason 'Melo was getting "slandered" was because of his lack of achievement in the post-season.

LeBron is the most accomplished superstar in the game - so there's really no reasonable 'slander' here to speak of - just hurt feelings.

...

He's slander-free until October depending on his performance in a Lakers uniform. LA media won't be half as forgiving as Cleveland..... Refuse to investigate any causes of team friction during the season like Cleveland....

Bron pouted after getting called out in a meeting for his mistakes by coach Lue. What happens when coach Walton does this in September? Rondo is on the team and doesn't let shit slide like former Cavs point guards.....

Back to agenda driven Bron praise: BRON THE GOAT OFF THE COURT. He stood up for causes when he didn't have to. Joe Budden and I have the same response to this issue: "I DON'T WANT TO HEAR SHIT ABOUT JORDAN AGAIN"

Jalen Rose is an inspiration for this in my opinion so shout out to JRLA the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy:
