Turned that shit hole franchise around (check the record the 10 years
prior, and then the time since he's been there), now leaving that
dust ass franchise where they deserve to be. They are AWFUL.

Good for him.

Give him $8 mill per for five years and dare him to turn it down. He can bring in his own coaching staff and everything.

Salute to Marv for getting out while he still can.

I generally like him, but things had gotten pretty stale in CIN.

He had his flaws, however:

- He did help turn a laughing stock into a legit NFL franchise, despite the front office remaining generally bad.

- He was stuck with a mediocre QB in a conference against at least two HOF QBs (three if you include Peyton), including the best QB of all time. No amount of coaching was going to get an Andy Dalton team to beat a Tom Brady or Rapist/PIT-defense team or Peyton in his prime. Cinci was forever stuck in the 2nd tier.

Much (but not all) of that isn't Marvin's fault.

A PS is that I wish other black coaches got as much leeway as Marv (and your average white coach) got to right the ship after a down year.

what do manning, PIT, and brady have to do with that

also the PIT loss happened in Cincinnati, so...

hes a good coach, and good for him for getting out on his own, but they were not in any 2nd tier. teams that win playoff games are in the 2nd tier.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

they weren't hemmed in by brady and manning or even big ben.

they did lose to ben a couple times but both times were AT HOME, they won the division yet couldn't do shit in the playoffs. that happened a couple other times, too.

yes, the bengals are dysfunctional. yes they sucked when he got there (though they weren't *always* awful like some suggest). and he didn't get criticized for that. he got a longer leash than most coaches, too. he should be successful in his next stop. but let's not overlook the fact that his teams never accomplished anything meaningful and that was a direct result of being terrible in the playoffs.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

but if he won those handful of playoff games he should have, his resume wouldn't be noticeably different to me.

He's a good coach, a good leader, competed in a division that was generally pretty hard, and held his own despite having a painfully average NFL QB.

And I think his biggest achievement was overcoming some of the worst ownership and front office in the NFL.

It's not all on him but enough of it is... Despite his successes he's made some terrible calls and failed to keep his team focused at some very critical points in the past.

My buddy has been calling for him to be fired for years... I'm weary of defending him.

Good luck Marvin.

Gave Cincinnati fans the joy of knocking the Ravens out in dramatic fashion (let's face it...the Bengals are usually on the other side of that play...it felt good to be THAT team lol). Fans started feeling good about next year because there could be a coach that would bring fresh ideas and change stuff on the offense, but...

It's Marvin's decision but damn the Bengals suck - ownership is cheap and Brown basically didn't want to pay a new coach and give up any power.

I don’t ever recall thinking the Bengals really had the squad to go deep.

I mean, certainly they could have won a game at least once. They blew that Pittsburgh game no question. If we’re talking championships, you need the QB unless you have a G.O.A.T. defense like the 2000 Ravens.

If youve been a coach for 15 yrs and havent even been able to put together a team capable of winning ONE playoff game, you gotta go.

Unless the organizations expectations are "well atleast we arent as bad as we used to be last century"

Zero playoff wins? You can literally get those kinds of results with any coach

He's far from a bad coach. His teams have been more good than bad. A few years ago they looked poised for greatness, but unfortunately they implode come postseason and Andy Daulton just ain't the guy to lead them to a SB.

He said the point of playing football is to win championships and I replied to that.

If you’re hung up on championships, does it really matter if you win a wild card round game and then go home or lose the first game?

The Bengals organization sucks. Their QB is average. They’re going nowhere regardless unless both of those change. Lewis has generally done a solid job, big picture wise. The hell else they gonna get and what’s he gonna do? Better? Doubt it.

Delhomme won a bunch. Alex Smith won a few. Rex Grossman won a few. A 36 year old Jeff Garcia won a game for Philly in '06 and almost got them to the NFC championship that year. You don't need an elite/franchise QB to win a single playoff game.

There are plenty of teams without elite QBs that win playoff games. We are talking *one game*. The guys who won Super Bowls, sure, those are exceptions that prove the rule, but the first fucking round? The plea copping here is getting out of hand.

playoff games through the years. He guided the Eagles to 1 SB and 5 NFC Championship games in 14 years and got the axe. Granted Lewis's low point has never been quite as low as Andy's last year. Still, Andy won a playoff game in his 2nd year with a young McNabb. He also won another in the mid 2000s with Jeff Garcia as the QB - and was only a fg away from making the NFC Championship with Garcia. And Garcia's WRs were Donte Stallworth, Reggie Brown, and Hank Baskett so spare the sob stories about a lack of QB or talent.

I like Marvin Lewis a lot and want to see him experience more success in Cinci, but damn if anyone thinks he's been mistreated or still making excuses for him not having won a playoff game in 15 years.

I was born and raised in Cincinnati.

Reds fan, graduated from University of Cincinnati, so I'm a Bearcats fan too... They've had their share of misery, sure, but we're not here for them...

Support never dies...

But the Bengals...

I became a BIG fan when the team went and hired the then defensive coordinator of the Super Bowl winning Ravens, Marvin Lewis. They drafted stud QB, Carson Palmer. Had a killer WR corps those first few years with Chad 85, TJ Housh, and Chris Henry (RIP). The 2005 team was probably the best Bengals team I've ever seen (it was better than the team that lost to Pitt in that heartbreaking loss a couple years ago).

Support never dies...

That team changed over to this new one we have. Finally trading Palmer for a HAUL (thanks Hue). Drafting Dalton and Green (AJ is the single best WR they've ever had, better than Chad, Pickens, etc.) and really forming a good defense over the years. They let many good candidates go (especially Zimmer, but also Gruden and Jackson, although Hue may not be the coach everyone thought/thinks he is).

Support never dies...

I was on board with Marv through the last resigning (b/c at the time I was a fan of this argument of "look what he's done to a team that was shit before him").

I'm sick of this rinse and repeat though. Why can't the Bengals have nice things? Because we fuck them up apparently. The stadium is trash and apparently going to be a point of contention when the lease is up in 2025 (I think that's the year). Mike Brown will ask for a new stadium or threaten to take the team elsewhere.

Support never dies...

The one constant? A HC who is 0-7 in the playoffs. His past 2 seasons were losing ones. He never shows any emotion other than *stern look, hands clap* on the sidelines. That bored look of his might as well be the newest Bengals logo on the side of their helmet. Why would HE want to stay here? Isn't there another team interested in him, ever?

Support never dies...

Problem is... I hate the people who jump to another team "because they are good". That's a weak argument. I'll buy "I grew up watching them" or "I have family there", but not "I just like them because". That's what I'm sitting here contemplating though. Who else can I like so that I don't have to hear these die hards scream Who Dey for a team run by an owner who doesn't care? His choice of a HC is "Fuck it, let's rehire Marvin Lewis". Is that really what I signed up for as a fan?

Perhaps I'll jump on the Colts bandwagon. I loved Peyton when he played, and was a lightweight fan of them b/c of him, but that team is also trending downward. Is Luck healthy? Isn't that line as bad as Cincy's? Who will their coach be? How can Frank Gore still play football?

What about the Browns? Can't do that, they are easily the worst franchise in the Big 3 (sorry NHL) and a division rival. And they just agreed to keep Hue after going 1-31 the past 2 years.

Fuck the Steelers.

For that matter... Fuck the Ravens.

I feel like a lost fan. I need a team that won't continue to let their fans down and then say "Stay the course" or "Real fans don't let go". Mike Brown is terrible. Marvin did his job, but it's time to move on.

Support never dies... Until it does.

Rant over. As you were.

*sigh*

As I mentioned above this was my mindset until the playoff loss to the Chargers in 2013. Love Marv and appreciate everything he has done for the team and 4th & 12 was the perfect swan song for him against the Ravens and knocking them out of the playoffs, but a we as fans deserve a new regime in both coaching staff and FO (but...you know...Mike Brown)

>I feel like a lost fan. I need a team that won't continue to

I could easily jump to being a Steeler fan. Both my brothers are mega Steeler fans and I know just about as much Steeler history as Bengal history. I don't hate the Steelers like a lot of other Bengal fans (I save my healthy hate for the Ravens, Browns, and 49ers) but I would like to start sticking it to them with wins. Mike Brown is content with being mediocre. For once I can tell that 100% of the fanbase is sick of it.
