"Weekend Soccer 12.09-10: Man Up"

With 15 minutes to go in last week's Arsenal-United clash things were setting up nicely for a momentous Manchester derby, in which City would be the clear favorite but with at least enough uncertainty to keep the hype alive. And then Pogba decided to clean his studs on Bellerin's knee, and the hype promptly deflated like an old souffle. Sure, it's still a game and anything can happen, but United was clearly much better since the impetuous Frenchman's return and his absence in the midfield will be a big problem against De Bruyne, Silva and co.
With that said, Mourinho proved last week that he still knows how to foil 'em, with his team pressing Arsenal from the kick-off to prevent them from setting up their play and disrupting their pace with well-timed bursts. Certainly City will be a more formidable foe to deal with, but there's still enough speed in United's front line to cause mayhem. Lingard and Martial were splendid at times on Saturday, and if Lukaku can raise his game to their level, things could just work out. And of course, Mourinho likes nothing more than to going into a matchup as an underdog, especially against an opponent considered to play prettier football than his team. Perhaps this time the firepower is too much to overcome, but here's hoping the thrill lasts as long as possible on Sunday.

In Serie A Juve and Inter meet in their highest-stakes matchup in years. Inter a one point ahead after a jubilant start, but Juventus showed last week in Napoli that they still have all the tools necessary to topple any of their league rivals.

just the reality of what im seeing amongst the soccer community and the media. "how will they stop city"
with no regard given for how they can stop us given they have struggled against subpar competition the last 2 or 3 games.
you cant deny that we are expected to lose.

Not to suggest it would be an improvement by any stretch, but it’s clear the lack of competition for his spot has allowed bellerin to become complacent.

José Mourinho in post-match fracas over Manchester City’s ‘noisy’ celebrations

Police officers and stewards had to separate up to 20 players and members of staff from Manchester United and City after an extraordinary bust-up in which bottles and punches were thrown and Mikel Arteta, one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants, was left with blood streaming down his face.

Arteta’s eyebrow was split open during a melee in a narrow corridor outside City’s dressing room and there were unconfirmed reports that another member of Guardiola’s backroom staff needed medical treatment after a confrontation sparked by José Mourinho apparently telling the victorious players to keep their music down.

Mourinho became embroiled in a row with Ederson, City’s Brazilian goalkeeper, who was standing just inside the dressing-room door and the two started shouting insults at one another in Portuguese. Mourinho is said to have accused Ederson of play-acting to waste time and then reverted to English, screaming “you fucking show respect. Who are you?”

Other players became involved and Romelu Lukaku was said to be prominently involved as the confrontation escalated into something much more serious, described by one person on the scene as being reminiscent of a pub fight. Early accounts indicate it was a much more serious incident than the infamous “Battle of the Buffet” in 2004 when Arsenal were the opponents and Sir Alex Ferguson was hit by flying pizza slices.

There were also reports that Mourinho was struck by a plastic bottle, as well as being squirted with milk, although that has not been confirmed and the Guardian has been told he escaped lightly despite being in the middle of it. Once everything had calmed down, Mourinho went into the referee’s room to voice his complaints to Michael Oliver about the incident when Ander Herrera was booked for going down under a challenge from Nicolas Otamendi in the penalty area.

Mourinho then emerged to do his television interviews and there was no sign of him needing to dry off. He did not make any reference to what had happened during all his media work.

Arteta, meanwhile, was being assessed in the City dressing room after being caught in the crossfire. United’s players are understood to feel like the noise from the away dressing room was provocatively loud and, with the door continually being opened, Mourinho appears to have been asking more respect to be shown to the losing team.

As the confrontation escalated, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva were caught on the outside looking in, having not been inside the dressing room when it started. However, other City players were clearly incensed by Mourinho’s behaviour and the fact that several players, most notably Lukaku, had become involved. There are always two police officers in the Old Trafford tunnel after games and eventually they helped to restore peace.

Neither team really deserved their goals as they all came on huge defending gaffes...so...we actually created a REAL chance from the run of play and Lukaku and Mata dicked them right into the keeper.

11 points. that's league.

Not having Pogba really hurt. I thought that was a weak red card and I was miffed we didn't appeal it.

We're #2!

there are some clear weaknesses to exploit. Rakitic is still playing regular minutes but he's definitely a step slow now. He should get replaced by Roberto, but Roberto still is getting wasted as a RB (where he cuts inside way too frequently). Paulinho is only good as a super-sub, Luis still isn't getting right, messi's getting dispossessed more than usual (still GOAT quality, just a shade less GOAT than usual), and Paco doesn't play enough.

With Dembele, Rafinha, and Umtiti back in time, should get by. but this is a very beatable barca.
