-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

it is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. - sherlock holmes

everyone has a slightly different formula for these things, but the basic idea is: it's d-rating weighted by whether or not your team won and how many minutes you played.
d-rating is, basically, when you're on the court how many points does the player you're guarding score. 100 is the benchmark--below 100 is good, just above 100 is reasonable, well above 100 is bad. D-rating is probably the hardest to get right--it's strongly affected by the quality of the team's overall defense and guards get hurt compared to bigs because rebounding is a part of d-rating. it also inflates defenders who make splashy plays (steals, blocks) over ones who just deny the opponent the chance to score (good fundamentals). Still, it's better than most any other metric out there.
offensive win share and rating is the flipside of that idea. How much better than average are you when you have the ball and how much has that led to Ws.
